The minimal integral Mahler measure of a number field $K$, $M(\mathcal{O}_K)$, is the minimal Mahler measure of a non-torsion primitive element of $\mathcal{O}_K$. Upper and lower bounds, which depend on the discriminant, are known. We show that for cubics, the lower bounds are sharp with respect to its growth as a function of discriminant. We construct an algorithm to compute $M(\mathcal{O}_K)$ for all cubics with absolute value of the discriminant bounded by $N$.
In the first part we construct algorithms which we apply to solve S-unit, Mordell, cubic Thue, cubic Thue-Mahler and generalized Ramanujan-Nagell equations. As a byproduct we obtain alternative practical approaches for various classical Diophantine problems, including the fundamental problem of finding all elliptic curves over Q with good reduction outside a given finite set of rational primes. To illustrate the utility of our algorithms we determined the solutions of large classes of equations, containing many examples of interest which are out of reach for the known methods. In addition we u…
Let $h(x,y)$ be a non-degenerate binary cubic form with integral coefficients, and let $S$ be an arbitrary finite set of prime numbers. By a classical theorem of Mahler, there are only finitely many pairs of relatively prime integers $x,y$ such that $h(x,y)$ is an $S$-unit. In the present paper, we reverse a well known argument, which seems to go back to Shafarevich, and use the modularity of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ to give upper bounds for the number of solutions of such a Thue-Mahler equation. In addition, our methods gives an effective method for determining all solutions, and we …
Let $M(α)$ denote the Mahler measure of the algebraic number $α$. In a recent paper, Dubickas and Smyth constructed a metric version of the Mahler measure on the multiplicative group of algebraic numbers. Later, Fili and the author used similar techniques to study a non-Archimedean version. We show how to generalize the above constructions in order to associate, to each point in $(0,\infty]$, a metric version $M_x$ of the Mahler measure, each having a triangle inequality of a different strength. We are able to compute $M_x(α)$ for sufficiently small $x$, identifying, in the process, a function…
We show that the Mahler measure of every Borwein polynomial -- a polynomial with coefficients in $ \{-1,0,1 \}$ having non-zero constant term -- can be expressed as a maximal Lyapunov exponent of a matrix cocycle that arises in the spectral theory of binary constant-length substitutions. In this way, Lehmer's problem for height-one polynomials having minimal Mahler measure becomes equivalent to a natural question from the spectral theory of binary constant-length substitutions. This supports another connection between Mahler measures and dynamics, beyond the well-known appearance of Mahler mea…
If $α$ is a non-zero algebraic number, we let $m(α)$ denote the Mahler measure of the minimal polynomial of $α$ over $\mathbb Z$. A series of articles by Dubickas and Smyth, and later by the author, develop a modified version of the Mahler measure called the $t$-metric Mahler measure, denoted $m_t(α)$. For fixed $α\in \bar{\mathbb Q}$, the map $t\mapsto m_t(α)$ is continuous, and moreover, is infinitely differentiable at all but finitely many points, called {\it exceptional points} for $α$. It remains open to determine whether there is a sequence of elements $α_n\in \bar{\mathbb Q}$ such that …
We show that the minimal positive logarithmic Lind-Mahler measure for a group of the form $G=\mathbb Z_2^r\times\mathbb Z_4^s$ with $|G|\geq 4$ is $\frac{1}{|G|} \log (|G|-1).$ We also show that for $G=\mathbb Z_2 \times \mathbb Z_{2^n}$ with $n\geq 3$ this value is $\frac{1}{|G|} \log 9.$ Previously the minimal measure was only known for $2$-groups of the form $\mathbb Z_2^k$ or $\mathbb Z_{2^k}.$
Let $X$ be a minimal cubic surface over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. The image $Γ$ of the Galois group $\operatorname{Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{F}}_q / \mathbb{F}_q)$ in the group $\operatorname{Aut}(\operatorname{Pic}(\overline{X}))$ is a cyclic subgroup of the Weyl group $W(E_6)$. There are $25$ conjugacy classes of cyclic subgroups in $W(E_6)$, and $5$ of them correspond to minimal cubic surfaces. It is natural to ask which conjugacy classes come from minimal cubic surfaces over a given finite field. In this paper we give a partial answer to this question and present many explicit examples.
In the present work, we determine explicitly the genus of any separable cubic extension of any global function field given the minimal polynomial of the extension. We give algorithms computing the ramification data and the genus of any separable cubic extension of any global rational function field.
We study the structure of the codifferent and of additively indecomposable integers in families of totally real cubic fields. We prove that for cubic orders in these fields, the minimal trace of indecomposable integers multiplied by totally positive elements of the codifferent can be arbitrarily large. This is very surprising, as in the so far studied examples of quadratic and simplest cubic fields, this minimum is 1 and 2. We further give sharp upper bounds on the norms of indecomposable integers in our families.
We provide an upper bound on the efficient irrationality exponents of cubic algebraics $x$ with the minimal polynomial $x^3 - tx^2 - a$. In particular, we show that it becomes non-trivial, i.e. better than the classical bound of Liouville in the case $|t| > 19.71 a^{4/3}$. Moreover, under the condition $|t| > 86.58 a^{4/3}$, we provide an explicit lower bound on the expression $||qx||$ for all large $q\in\mathbb{Z}$. These results are based on the recently discovered continued fractions of cubic irrationals and improve the currently best-known bounds of Wakabayashi.
The systole of a closed Riemannian manifold is the minimal length of a non-contractible closed loop. We give a uniform lower bound for the systole for large classes of simple arithmetic locally symmetric orbifolds. We establish new bounds for the translation length of a semisimple element x in SL_n(R) in terms of its associated Mahler measure. We use these geometric methods to prove the existence of extensions of number fields in which fixed sets of primes have certain prescribed splitting behavior.
E. Thomas was one of the first to solve an infinite family of Thue equations, when he considered the forms $F_n(X, Y )= X^3 -(n-1)X^2Y -(n+2)XY^2 -Y^3$ and the family of equations $F_n(X, Y )=\pm 1$, $n\in {\mathbf N}$. This family is associated to the family of the simplest cubic fields ${\mathbf Q}(λ)$ of D. Shanks, $λ$ being a root of $F_n(X,1)$. We introduce in this family a second parameter by replacing the roots of the minimal polynomial $F_n(X, 1) $ of $λ$ by the $a$-th powers of the roots and we effectively solve the family of Thue equations that we obtain and which depends now on the …
Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ denote the finite field with $q$ elements. In this work, we use characters to give the number of rational points on suitable curves of low degree over $\mathbb{F}_q$ in terms of the number of rational points on elliptic curves. In the case where $q$ is a prime number, we give a way to calculate these numbers. As a consequence of these results, we characterize maximal and minimal curves given by equations of the forms $ax^3+by^3+cz^3=0$ and $ax^4+by^4+cz^4=0$.
