The systole of a closed Riemannian manifold is the minimal length of a non-contractible closed loop. We give a uniform lower bound for the systole for large classes of simple arithmetic locally symmetric orbifolds. We establish new bounds for the translation length of a semisimple element x in SL_n(R) in terms of its associated Mahler measure. We use these geometric methods to prove the existence of extensions of number fields in which fixed sets of primes have certain prescribed splitting behavior.
In this paper we study the systole growth of arithmetic locally symmetric spaces up congruence covers and show that this growth is at least logarithmic in volume. This generalizes previous work of Buser and Sarnak as well as Katz, Schaps and Vishne where the case of compact hyperbolic 2- and 3-manifolds was considered.
Our main result is that for all sufficiently large $x_0>0$, the set of commensurability classes of arithmetic hyperbolic 2- or 3-orbifolds with fixed invariant trace field $k$ and systole bounded below by $x_0$ has density one within the set of all commensurability classes of arithmetic hyperbolic 2- or 3-orbifolds with invariant trace field $k$. The proof relies upon bounds for the absolute logarithmic Weil height of algebraic integers due to Silverman, Brindza and Hajdu, as well as precise estimates for the number of rational quaternion algebras not admitting embeddings of any quadratic fiel…
The purpose this article is to try to understand the mysterious coincidence between the asymptotic behavior of the volumes of the Moduli Space of closed hyperbolic surfaces of genus $g$ with respect to the Weil-Petersson metric and the asymptotic behavior of the number of arithmetic closed hyperbolic surfaces of genus $g$. If the set of arithmetic surfaces is well distributed then its image for any interesting function should be well distributed too. We investigate the distribution of the function systole. We give several results indicating that the systoles of arithmetic surfaces can not be c…
Here we survey on the growth of systoles of arithmetic locally symmetric spaces under the congruence covering and give simple proofs for the best possible constants of Gromov for several important classes of symmetric spaces.
We apply a study of orders in quaternion algebras, to the differential geometry of Riemann surfaces. The least length of a closed geodesic on a hyperbolic surface is called its systole, and denoted syspi_1. P. Buser and P. Sarnak constructed Riemann surfaces X whose systole behaves logarithmically in the genus g(X). The Fuchsian groups in their examples are principal congruence subgroups of a fixed arithmetic group with rational trace field. We generalize their construction to principal congruence subgroups of arbitrary arithmetic surfaces. The key tool is a new trace estimate valid for an arb…
In this paper we prove that, for any arithmetic hyperbolic $n$-manifold $M$ of the first type, the systole of most of the principal congruence coverings $M_{I}$ satisfy $$sys_{1}(M_{I})\geq \frac{8}{n(n+1)}\log(vol(M_{I}))-c,$$ where $c$ is a constant independent of $I$. This generalizes previous work of Buser and Sarnak, and Katz, Schaps and Vishne in dimension 2 and 3. As applications, we obtain explicit estimates for systolic genus of hyperbolic manifolds studied by Belolipetsky and the distance of homological codes constructed by Guth and Lubotzky. In an appendix together with Cayo Dória w…
We examine the large systole problem, which concerns compact hyperbolic Riemannian surfaces whose systole, the length of the shortest noncontractible loops, grows logarithmically in genus. The generalization of a construction of Buser and Sarnak by Katz, Schaps, and Vishne, which uses principal "congruence" subgroups of a fixed cocompact arithmetic Fuchsian, achieves the current maximum known growth constant of γ= 4/3. We prove that this is the best possible value of γfor this construction using arithmetic Fuchsians in the congruence case. The final section compares the large systole problem w…
We introduce the notion of weak commensurabilty of arithmetic subgroups and relate it to the length equivalence and isospectrality of locally symmetric spaces. We prove many strong consequences of weak commensurabilty and derive from these many interesting results about isolength and isospectral locally symmetric spaces.
Let Y be a noncompact rank one locally symmetric space of finite volume. Then Y has a finite number e(Y) > 0 of topological ends. In this paper, we show that for any natural number n, the Y with e(Y) \leq n that are arithmetic fall into finitely many commensurability classes. In particular, there is a constant c_n such that n-cusped arithmetic orbifolds do not exist in dimension greater than c_n. We make this explicit for one-cusped arithmetic hyperbolic n-orbifolds and prove that none exist for n \geq 30.
R. Zimmer proved that, on a compact manifold, a foliation with a dense leaf, a suitable leafwise Riemannian symmetric metric and a transverse Lie structure has arithmetic holonomy group. In this work we improve such result for totally geodesic foliations by showing that the manifold itself is arithmetic. This also gives a positive answer, for some special cases, to a conjecture of E. Ghys.
A "hidden symmetry" of a Riemannian manifold M is an isometry of a d-sheeted, 1<d<\infty, Riemannian cover of M which is not the lift of any isometry. In this paper we characterize the locally symmetric metric(s) on a closed, arithmetic manifold as the unique metric with infinitely many hidden symmetries.
In this article, we prove that every arithmetic locally symmetric orbifold of classical type without Euclidean or compact factors has arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions in its primitive length spectrum. Moreover, we show the stronger property that every primitive length occurs in arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions in its primitive length spectrum. This confirms one direction of a conjecture of Lafont--McReynolds, which states that the property of having every primitive length occur in arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions characterizes the arithmeticity of such spaces.
In this paper we show that totally geodesic subspaces determine the commensurability class of a standard arithmetic hyperbolic $n$-orbifold, $n\ge 4$. Many of the results are more general and apply to locally symmetric spaces associated to arithmetic lattices in $\mathbb{R}$-simple Lie groups of type $B_n$ and $D_n$. We use a combination of techniques from algebraic groups and quadratic forms to prove several results about these spaces.
In this paper, we provide a concrete interpretation of equivariant Reidemeister torsion and demonstrate that Bismut-Zhang's equivariant Cheeger-Müller theorem simplifies considerably when applied to locally symmetric spaces. In a companion paper, this allows us to extend recent results on torsion cohomology growth and torsion cohomology comparison for arithmetic locally symmetric spaces an equivariant setting.
We formulate a conjecture that arithmetic locally symmetric manifolds have simple homotopy type, and prove it for the non-compact case. More precisely, we show that, for any symmetric space S of non-compact type without Euclidean de Rham factors, there are constants a=a(S) and d=d(S) such that any non-compact arithmetic manifold, locally isometric to S, is homotopically equivalent to a simplicial complex whose vertices degrees are bounded by d, and its number of vertices is bounded by a times the Riemannian volume. It is very likely that such a result holds also for compact arithmetic manifold…
In this article, we investigate when the set of primitive geodesic lengths on a Riemannian manifold have arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions. We prove that in the space of negatively curved metrics, a metric having such arithmetic progressions is quite rare. We introduce almost arithmetic progressions, a coarsification of arithmetic progressions, and prove that every negatively curved, closed Riemannian manifold has arbitrarily long almost arithmetic progressions in its primitive length spectrum. Concerning genuine arithmetic progressions, we prove that every non-compact, locally symmetri…
In this paper, we are going to show some rigidity results for complete open Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative scalar curvature. Without using the famous Cheeger-Gromoll splitting theorem we give a new proof to a rigidity result for complete manifolds with nonnegative scalar curvature admitting a proper smooth map to $T^{n-1}\times \mathbf R$ with nonzero degree. Here we introduce a trick to obtain the compactness of limit hypersurface from locally graphical convergence. Based on the same idea we also establish an optimal $2$-systole inequality for several classes of complete Riemannian man…
We show that a locally symmetric space of noncompact type and with finite volume is quasi-isometric to the euclidean cone over a finite simplicial complex. A detailed analysis of metric properties yields a proof of a conjecture of Siegel.
We study Riemannian metrics on compact, torsionless, non-geometric $3$-manifolds, i.e. whose interior does not support any of the eight model geometries. We prove a lower bound "à la Margulis" for the systole and a volume estimate for these manifolds, only in terms of an upper bound of entropy and diameter. We then deduce corresponding local topological rigidy results in the class $\mathscr{M}_{ngt}^\partial (E,D) $ of compact non-geometric 3-manifolds with torsionless fundamental group (with possibly empty, non-spherical boundary) whose entropy and diameter are bounded respectively by $E, D$.…
Oeljeklaus-Toma (OT) manifolds are certain compact complex manifolds built from number fields. Conversely, we show that the fundamental group often pins down the number field uniquely. We relate the first homology to some interesting ideal. OT manifolds are never Kähler, but carry an LCK metric (locally conformally Kähler). Oeljeklaus and Toma used them to disprove a conjecture on the Betti numbers of spaces carrying LCK metrics. Mysteriously, the volume for this metric gives the discriminant and Dirichlet regulator of the number field. Totally unlike the above topological aspects, there does …
We study the $L^p$-spectrum of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on certain complete locally symmetric spaces $M=Γ\backslash X$ with finite volume and arithmetic fundamental group $Γ$ whose universal covering $X$ is a symmetric space of non-compact type. We also show, how the obtained results for locally symmetric spaces can be generalized to manifolds with cusps of rank one.
We summarize recent results initiating spectral analysis on pseudo-Riemannian locally symmetric spaces $Γ\backslash G/H$, beyond the classical setting where $H$ is compact (e.g. theory of automorphic forms for arithmetic $Γ$) or $Γ$ is trivial (e.g. Plancherel-type formula for semisimple symmetric spaces).
We study the Morse-Novikov cohomology and its almost-symplectic counterpart on manifolds admitting locally conformally symplectic structures. More precisely, we introduce lcs cohomologies and we study elliptic Hodge theory, dualities, Hard Lefschetz Condition. We consider solvmanifolds and Oeljeklaus-Toma manifolds. In particular, we prove that Oeljeklaus-Toma manifolds with precisely one complex place, and under an additional arithmetic condition, satisfy the Mostow property. This holds in particular for the Inoue surface of type $S^0$.
This paper is the next installment of our analysis of length-commensurable locally symmetric spaces begun in Publ. math. IHES 109(2009), 113-184. For a Riemannian manifold $M$, we let $L(M)$ be the weak length spectrum of $M$, i.e. the set of lengths of all closed geodesics in $M$, and let $\mathcal{F}(M)$ denote the subfield of $\mathbb{R}$ generated by $L(M)$. Let now $M_i$ be an arithmetically defined locally symmetric space associated with a simple algebraic $\mathbb{R}$-group $G_i$ for $i = 1, 2$. Assuming Schanuel's conjecture from transcendental number theory, we prove (under some minor…
Suppose X/Gamma is an arithmetic locally symmetric space of noncompact type (with the natural metric induced by the Killing form of the isometry group of X), and let p be a point on the visual boundary of X. It was shown by T.Hattori that if each horoball based at p intersects every Gamma-orbit in X, then p is not on the boundary of any Q-split flat in X (where Q is the field of rational numbers). We prove the converse. (This was conjectured by W.H.Rehn in some special cases.) Furthermore, we prove an analogous result when Gamma is a nonarithmetic lattice.
In this paper we first derive several results concerning the $L^p$ spectrum of arithmetic locally symmetric spaces whose $\Q$-rank equals one. In particular, we show that there is an open subset of $\C$ consisting of eigenvalues of the $L^p$ Laplacian if $p <2$ and that corresponding eigenfunctions are given by certain Eisenstein series. On the other hand, if $p>2$ there is at most a discrete set of real eigenvalues of the $L^p$ Laplacian. These results are used in the second part of this paper in order to show that the dynamics of the $L^p$ heat semigroups for $p<2$ is very different from the…
