We extend the lifting methods of our previous paper to lift reducible odd representations $\barρ:\mathrm{Gal}(\overline{F}/F) \to G(k)$ of Galois groups of global fields $F$ valued in Chevalley groups $G(k)$. Lifting results, when combined with automorphy lifting results pioneered by Wiles in the number field case and the results on the global Langlands correspondence proved by Drinfeld and L. Lafforgue in the function field case, give the only known method to access modularity of mod $p$ Galois representations in both reducible and irreducible cases. In the reducible case this allows one to show that the actual representation, rather than just its semisimplification, arises from reduction of the geometric representation attached to a cuspidal automorphic representation on the dual group of $G$. As a particularly concrete application, we get a version of Serre's modularity conjecture for reducible, odd representations $\barρ: \mathrm{Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q}) \to \mathrm{GL}_2(k)$. This extends earlier results of Hamblen and Ramakrishna in this classical case and proves modularity of infinitely many extensions of fixed characters that are not covered by loc. cit.
We prove new automorphy lifting theorems for residually reducible Galois representations of unitary type in which the residual representation is permitted to have an arbitrary number of irreducible constituents.
In recent work, the authors proved a general result on lifting $G$-irreducible odd Galois representations $\mathrm{Gal}(\overline{F}/F) \to G(\overline{\mathbb{F}}_{\ell})$, with $F$ a totally real number field and $G$ a reductive group, to geometric $\ell$-adic representations. In this note we take $G$ to be a classical group and construct many examples of $G$-irreducible representations to which these new lifting methods apply, but to which the lifting methods provided by potential automorphy theorems do not.
We prove automorphy lifting results for certain essentially conjugate self-dual $p$-adic Galois representations $ρ$ over CM imaginary fields $F$, which satisfy in particular that $p$ splits in $F$, and that the restriction of $ρ$ on any decomposition group above $p$ is reducible with all the Jordan-Hölder factors of dimension at most $2$. We also show some results on Breuil's locally analytic socle conjecture in certain non-trianguline case. The main results are obtained by establishing an $R=\mathbb{T}$-type result over the $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{Q}_p)$-ordinary families considered by Breuil-…
We establish the automorphy of some families of 2-dimensional representations of the absolute Galois group of a totally real field, which do not satisfy the so-called `Taylor--Wiles hypothesis'. We apply this to the problem of the modularity of elliptic curves over totally real fields
Let $F$ be a CM number field. We prove modularity lifting theorems for regular $n$-dimensional Galois representations over $F$ without any self-duality condition. We deduce that all elliptic curves $E$ over $F$ are potentially modular, and furthermore satisfy the Sato--Tate conjecture. As an application of a different sort, we also prove the Ramanujan Conjecture for weight zero cuspidal automorphic representations for $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbf{A}_F)$.
We prove potential automorphy results for a single Galois representation $G_F \rightarrow GL_n(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}_l)$ where $F$ is a CM number field. The strategy is to use the $p,q$ switch trick and modify the Dwork motives employed in \cite{HSBT} to break self-duality of the motives, but not the Hodge-Tate weights. Another key result to prove is the ordinarity of certain $p$-adic representations, which follows from log geometry techniques. One input is the automorphy lifting theorem in \cite{tap}.
We prove several results concerning the existence of potentially crystalline lifts with prescribed Hodge-Tate weights and inertial types of a given n-dimensional mod p representation of the absolute Galois group of K, where K/Q_p is a finite extension. Some of these results are proved by purely local methods, and are expected to be useful in the application of automorphy lifting theorems. The proofs of the other results are global, making use of automorphy lifting theorems.
In this paper, we consider Galois representations of the absolute Galois group $\text{Gal}(\overline {\mathbb Q}/\mathbb Q)$ attached to modular forms for noncongruence subgroups of $\text{SL}_2(\mathbb Z)$. When the underlying modular curves have a model over $\mathbb Q$, these representations are constructed by Scholl and are referred to as Scholl representations, which form a large class of motivic Galois representations. In particular, by a result of Belyi, Scholl representations include the Galois actions on the Jacobian varieties of algebraic curves defined over $\mathbb Q$. As Scholl re…
In this paper, we determine mod $2$ Galois representations $\barρ_{ψ,2}:G_K:={\rm Gal}(\bar{K}/K)\longrightarrow {\rm GSp}_4(\mathbb{F}_2)$ associated to the mirror motives of rank 4 with pure weight 3 coming from the Dwork quintic family $$X^5_0+X^5_1+X^5_2+X^5_3+X^5_4-5ψX_0X_1X_2X_3X_4=0,\ ψ\in K$$ defined over a number field $K$ under the irreducibility condition of the quintic trinomial $f_ψ$ below. Applying this result, when $K=F$ is a totally real field, for some at most qaudratic totally real extension $M/F$, we prove that $\barρ_{ψ,2}|_{G_M}$ is associated to a Hilbert-Siegel modular H…
Given a reducible Galois representation $\overlineρ: G_{\mathbb{Q}} \rightarrow GL_2( \mathbb{F}_q)$ we show there exists an irreducible deformation $ρ: G_{\mathbb{Q}} \rightarrow GL_2 (\mathbb{W} [[T_1, T_2,.., T_r,....,]])$ of $\overlineρ$ ramified at infinitely many primes, where $\mathbb{W}$ denotes the ring of Witt vectors of $\mathbb{F}_q$. This is a modification of Ramakrishna's result for the irreducible case.
Let $\ell \geq 5$ be a prime and let $N$ be a square-free integer prime to $\ell$. For each prime $p$ dividing $N$, let $a_p$ be either $1$ or $-1$. We give sufficient criteria for the existence of a newform $f$ of weight 2 for $Γ_0(N)$ such that the mod $\ell$ Galois representation attached to $f$ is reducible and $U_p f = a_p f$ for primes $p$ dividing $N$. The main techniques used are level raising methods based on an exact sequence due to Ribet.
On the classicality theorem and its applications to the automorphy lifting theorem and the Breuil-M$\mathrm{\acute{e}}$zard conjecture in some $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{Q}_{p^2})$ cases
The ghost conjecture, formulated by this article's authors, predicts the list of p-adic valuations of the non-zero p-th eigenvalues ("slopes") for overconvergent p-adic modular eigenforms in terms of the Newton polygon of an easy-to-describe power series (the "ghost series"). The prediction is restricted to eigenforms whose Galois representation modulo p is reducible on a decomposition group at p. It has been discovered, however, that the conjecture is not formulated correctly. Here we explain the issue and propose a salvage.
The global deformation theory of residually reducible Galois representations with fixed auxiliary conditions is studied. We show that $\barρ:\operatorname{Gal}(\bar{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})\rightarrow \operatorname{GL}_2(\bar{\mathbb{F}}_p)$ lifts to a Hida line for which the weights range over a congruence class modulo-$p^2$. The advantage of the purely Galois theoretic approach is that it allows us to construct $p$-adic families of Galois representations lifting the actual representation $\barρ$, and not just the semisimplification.
We study an analogue of Serre's modularity conjecture for projective representations $\overlineρ: \operatorname{Gal}(\overline{K} / K) \rightarrow \operatorname{PGL}_2(k)$, where $K$ is a totally real number field. We prove new cases of this conjecture when $k = \mathbb{F}_5$ by using the automorphy lifting theorems over CM fields established in previous work of the authors.
In this paper, we call strongly modular those reducible semi-simple odd mod $l$ Galois representations for which the conclusion of the strongest form of Serre's original modularity conjecture holds. Under the assumption that the Serre weight $k$ satisfies $l\textgreater{}k+1$, we give a precise characterization of strongly modular representations, hence generalizing a classical theorem of Ribet pertaining to the case of conductor $1$.When the representation $ρ$ is not strongly modular, we give a necessary and sufficient condition on the primes $p$ not dividing $Nl$ for which it arises in level…
The notion of adequate subgroups was introduced by Jack Thorne [42]. It is a weakening of the notion of big subgroups used in generalizations of the Taylor-Wiles method for proving the automorphy of certain Galois representations. Using this idea, Thorne was able to strengthen many automorphy lifting theorems. It was shown in [22] that if the dimension is small compared to the characteristic then all absolutely irreducible representations are adequate. Here we extend the result by showing that, in almost all cases, absolutely irreducible kG-modules in characteristic p, whose irreducible G+-sum…
In the present paper, we study the $p$-adic $L$-functions and the (strict) Selmer groups over $\mathbb{Q}_{\infty}$, the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $\mathbb{Q}$, of the $p$-adic weight one cusp forms $f$, obtained via the $p$-stabilization of weight one Eisenstein series, under the assumption that a certain Eisenstein component of the $p$-ordinary universal cuspidal Hecke algebra is Gorenstein. As an application, we compute the Iwasawa invariants of ordinary modular forms of weight $k\geq 2$ with the same residual Galois representations as the one of $f$, which in our setting, is r…
In this paper we study deformations of mod $p$ Galois representations $τ$ (over an imaginary quadratic field $F$) of dimension $2$ whose semi-simplification is the direct sum of two characters $τ_1$ and $τ_2$. As opposed to our previous work we do not impose any restrictions on the dimension of the crystalline Selmer group $H^1_Σ(F, {\rm Hom}(τ_2, τ_1)) \subset {\rm Ext}^1(τ_2, τ_1)$. We establish that there exists a basis $\mathcal{B}$ of $H^1_Σ(F, {\rm Hom}(τ_2, τ_1))$ arising from automorphic representations over $F$ (Theorem 8.1). Assuming among other things that the elements of $\mathcal{…
We compute the reductions of irreducible crystalline two-dimensional representations of $G_{\mathbf{Q}_p}$ of slope 1, for primes $p \geq 5$, and all weights. We describe the semisimplification of the reductions completely. In particular, we show that the reduction is often reducible. We also investigate whether the extension obtained is peu or très ramifiée, in the relevant reducible non-semisimple cases. The proof uses the compatibility between the $p$-adic and mod $p$ Local Langlands Correspondences, and involves a detailed study of the reductions of both the standard and non-standard latti…
We prove that every odd semisimple reducible (2-dimensional) mod l Galois representation arises from a cuspidal eigenform. In addition, we investigate the possible different types (level, weight, character) of such a modular form. When the representation is the direct sum of the trivial character and a power of the mod l cyclotomic character, we are able to characterize the primes that can arise as levels of the associated newforms. As an application, we determine a new explicit lower bound for the highest degree among the fields of coefficients of newforms of trivial Nebentypus and prime leve…
We prove that for a Hecke cuspform $f\in S_k(Γ_0(N),χ)$ and a prime $l>\max\{k,6\}$ such that $l\nmid N$, there exists an infinite family $\{k_r\}_{r\geq 1}\subseteq\mathbb{Z}$ such that for each $k_r$, there is a cusp form $f_{k_r}\in S_{k_r}(Γ_0(N),χ)$ such that the Deligne representation $ρ_{f_{k_r,l}}$ is a crystaline and potentially diagonalizable lift of $\overlineρ_{f,l}$. When $f$ is $l$-ordinary, we base our proof on the theory of Hida families, while in the non-ordinary case, we adapt a local-to-global argument due to Khare and Wintenberger in the setting of their proof of Serre's mo…
