We prove that for a Hecke cuspform $f\in S_k(Γ_0(N),χ)$ and a prime $l>\max\{k,6\}$ such that $l\nmid N$, there exists an infinite family $\{k_r\}_{r\geq 1}\subseteq\mathbb{Z}$ such that for each $k_r$, there is a cusp form $f_{k_r}\in S_{k_r}(Γ_0(N),χ)$ such that the Deligne representation $ρ_{f_{k_r,l}}$ is a crystaline and potentially diagonalizable lift of $\overlineρ_{f,l}$. When $f$ is $l$-ordinary, we base our proof on the theory of Hida families, while in the non-ordinary case, we adapt a local-to-global argument due to Khare and Wintenberger in the setting of their proof of Serre's modularity conjecture, together with a result on existence of lifts with prescribed local conditions over CM fields, a flatness result due to Böckle and a local dimension result by Kisin. We discuss the motivation and tentative future applications of our result in ongoing research on the automorphy of $\mathrm{GL}_{2n}$-representations in the higher level case.
In this paper, we compute the Fourier expansion of the Shintani lift of nearly holomorphic modular forms. As an application, we deduce modularity properties of generating series of cycle integrals of nearly holomorphic modular forms.
We prove the existence of a potentially diagonalizable lift of a given automorphic mod $p$ Galois representation $\overlineρ:{\rm Gal}(\overline{F}/F)\longrightarrow {\rm GSp}_4(\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p)$ for any totally real field $F$ and any rational prime $p>2$ under the adequacy condition by using automorphic lifting techniques developed by Barnet-Lamb, Gee, Geraghty, and Taylor. As an application, when $p$ is split completely in $F$, we prove a variant of Serre's weight conjecture for $\overlineρ$. The formulation of our Serre conjecture is done by following Toby Gee's philosophy. Applying…
We prove a modularity lifting theorem for potentially Barostti-Tate representations over totally real fields, generalising recent results of Kisin. Unfortunately, there was an error in the original version of this paper, meaning that we can only obtain a slightly weaker result in the case where the representations are potentially ordinary; an erratum has been added explaining this error.
We show how to realize the Shimura lift of arbitrary level and character using the vector-valued theta lifts of Borcherds. Using the regularization of Borcherds' lift we extend the Shimura lift to take weakly holomorphic modular forms of half-integral weight to meromorphic modular forms of even integral weight having poles at CM points.
The aim of this paper is to show lifts from pairs of two elliptic modular forms to Siegel modular forms of half-integral weight of even degree under the assumption that the constructed Siegel modular form is not identically zero. The key of the proof is to introduce a certain generalization of the Maass relation for Siegel modular forms of half-integral weight of general degree.
It is shown that each complex conjugate of a meromorphic modular form for $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$ of any complex weight $p$ occurs as the image of a harmonic modular form under the operator $2i y^p \, \partial_{\bar z}$. These harmonic lifts occur in holomorphic families with the weight as the parameter.
In this note we improve on the results of our earlier paper[BLGG12], proving a near-optimal theorem on the existence of ordinary lifts of a mod l Hilbert modular form for any odd prime l.
We show that the meromorphic modular forms recently considered by Bringmann and Kane can be obtained as images of regularized theta lifts of Poincaré series under weight raising operators. We use this fact in order to simplify the evaluation of the regularized pairing, also defined by Bringmann and Kane, of these functions with other meromorphic modular forms.
We explain how the work of Johnson-Leung and Roberts on lifting Hilbert modular forms for real quadratic fields to Siegel modular forms can be adapted to imaginary quadratic fields. For this we use archimedean results from Harris, Soudry, Taylor and replace the global arguments of Roberts by the non-vanishing result of Takeda. As an application of our lifting result, we exhibit an abelian surface $B$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$, which is not restriction of scalars of an elliptic curve and satisfies the Brumer-Kramer Paramodularity Conjecture.
We study the analytic behavior of the restriction of a Siegel modular form to $\mathbb{H} \times \mathbb{H}$ in the case that the Siegel form is a Saito-Kurokawa lift. A formula of Ichino links this behavior to a family of $GL_3 \times GL_2$ $L$-functions.
We consider lifts from two elliptic modular forms to Siegel modular forms of odd degrees which are special cases of Miyawaki-Ikeda lifts. Assuming non-vanishing of these Miyawaki-Ikeda lifts, we show that the spinor L-functions of these Miyawaki-Ikeda lifts are products of some kind of symmetric power L-functions determined by original two elliptic modular forms.
We study the meromorphic modular forms defined as sums of -k (k>1) powers of integral quadratic polynomials with negative discriminant. These functions can be viewed as meromorphic analogues of the holomorphic modular forms defined in the same way with positive discriminant, first investigated by Zagier in connection with the Doi-Naganuma map and then by Kohnen and Zagier in connection with the Shimura-Shintani lifts. We compute the Fourier coefficients of these meromorphic modular forms and we show that they split into the sum of a meromorphic modular form with computable algebraic Fourier co…
Under mild hypotheses, we prove that if F is a totally real field, k is the algebraic closure of the finite field with l elements and r : G_F --> GL_2(k) is irreducible and modular, then there is a finite solvable totally real extension F'/F such that r|_{G_F'} has a modular lift which is ordinary at each place dividing l. We deduce a similar result for r itself, under the assumption that at places v|l the representation r|_{G_F_v} is reducible. This allows us to deduce improvements to results in the literature on modularity lifting theorems for potentially Barsotti-Tate representations and th…
Given elliptic modular forms f and g satisfying certain conditions on their weights and levels, we prove (a quantitative version of the statement) that there exist infinitely many imaginary quadratic fields K and characters chi of the ideal class group Cl_K such that L(1/2, f_K \times chi) \neq 0 and L(1/2, g_K \times chi) \neq 0. The proof is based on a non-vanishing result for Fourier coefficients of Siegel modular forms combined with the theory of Yoshida liftings.
The existence and construction of vector-valued modular forms (vvmf) for any arbitrary Fuchsian group $\mathrm{G}$, for any representation $ρ:\mathrm{G} \longrightarrow \mathrm{GL}_{d}(\mathbb{C})$ of finite image can be established by lifting scalar-valued modular forms of the finite index subgroup $Ker(ρ)$ of $\mathrm{G}$. In this article vvmf are explicitly constructed for any admissible multiplier (representation) $ρ$, see Section 3 for the definition of admissible multiplier. In other words, the following question has been partially answered: For which representations $ρ$ of a given $\mat…
We extend Borcherds' singular theta lift in signature $(1,2)$ to harmonic Maass forms of weight $1/2$ whose non-holomorphic part is allowed to be of exponential growth at $i\infty$. We determine the singularities of the lift and compute its Fourier expansion. It turns out that the lift is continuous but not differentiable along certain geodesics in the upper half-plane corresponding to the non-holomorphic principal part of the input. As an application, we obtain a generalization to higher level of the weight $2$ modular integral of Duke, Imamoglu and Tóth. Further, we construct automorphic pro…
In this paper, we prove the existence of certain lifts of Hilbert cusp forms to general odd spin groups. We then use those lifts to provide evidence for a conjecture of Gross on the modularity of abelian varieties not of ${\rm GL}_2$-type.
In this paper, we use regularized theta liftings to construct weak Maass forms weight 1/2 as lifts of weak Maass forms of weight 0. As a special case we give a new proof of some of recent results of Duke, Toth and Imamoglu on cycle integrals of the modular j-invariant and extend these to any congruence subgroup. Moreover, our methods allow us to settle the open question of a geometric interpretation for periods of j along infinite geodesics in the upper half plane. In particular, we give the `central value' of the (non-existing) `L-function' for j. The key to the proofs is the construction of …
In this paper, we construct Shintani lifts from integral weight weakly holomorphic modular forms to half-integral weight weakly holomorphic modular forms. Although defined by different methods, these coincide with the classical Shintani lifts when restricted to the space of cusp forms. As a side effect, this gives the coefficients of the classical Shintani lifts as new cycle integrals. This yields new formulas for the $L$-values of Hecke eigenforms. When restricted to the space of weakly holomorphic modular forms orthogonal to cusp forms, the Shintani lifts introduce a definition of weakly hol…
The goal of this paper is to construct the p-adic analytic family of overconvergent half-integral weight modular forms using Hecke-equivariant overconvergent Shintani lifting. The classical Shintani map is the Hecke-equivariant map from the space of cusp forms of integral weight to the space of cusp forms of half-integral weight. Glenn Stevens proved in [St1] that there is Lamda-adic lifting of this map to the Hida family of ordinary cusp forms of integral weight and consequently constructed Lamda-adic modular eigen form of half-integral weight. The natural thing to do is generalizing his resu…
There are a variety of characterizations of Saito-Kurokawa lifts from elliptic modular forms to Siegel modular forms of degree 2. In addition to giving a survey of known characterizations, we apply a recent result of Weissauer to provide a number of new and simpler characterizations of Saito-Kurokawa lifts.
Some generalizations of the Maass relation for Siegel modular forms of higher degrees have been obtained by several authors. In the present article we first give a new generalization of the Maass relation for Siegel-Eisenstein series of arbitrary degrees. Furthermore, we show that the Duke-Imamoglu-Ibukiyama-Ikeda lifts satisfy this generalized Maass relation with some modifications. As an application of the generalized Maass relation in the present article we give a new proof of the Miyawaki-Ikeda lifts of two elliptic modular forms. Namely, we compute the standard L-function of the Miyawaki-…
We apply differential operators to modular forms on orthogonal groups $\mathrm{O}(2, \ell)$ to construct infinite families of modular forms on special cycles. These operators generalize the quasi-pullback. The subspaces of theta lifts are preserved; in particular, the higher pullbacks of the lift of a (lattice-index) Jacobi form $ϕ$ are theta lifts of partial development coefficients of $ϕ$. For certain lattices of signature (2, 2) and (2, 3), for which there are interpretations as Hilbert-Siegel modular forms, we observe that the higher pullbacks coincide with differential operators introduce…
We consider a special theta lift $θ(f)$ from cuspidal Siegel modular forms $f$ on $\mathrm{Sp}_4$ to "modular forms" $θ(f)$ on $\mathrm{SO}(4,4)$. This lift can be considered an analogue of the Saito-Kurokawa lift, where now the image of the lift is representations of $\mathrm{SO}(4,4)$ that are quaternionic at infinity. We relate the Fourier coefficients of $θ(f)$ to those of $f$, and in particular prove that $θ(f)$ is nonzero and has algebraic Fourier coefficients if $f$ does. Restricting the $θ(f)$ to $G_2 \subseteq \mathrm{SO}(4,4)$, we obtain cuspidal modular forms on $G_2$ of arbitrarily…
Given a prime $p \ge 5$ and an abstract odd representation $ρ_n$ with coefficients modulo $p^n$ (for some $n \ge 1$) and big image, we prove the existence of a lift of $ρ_n$ to characteristic $0$ whenever local lifts exist (under some technical conditions). Moreover, we can chose the inertial type of our lift at all primes but finitely many (where the lift is of Steinberg type). We apply this result to the realm of modular forms, proving a level lowering theorem modulo prime powers and providing examples of level raising. In particular, our method shows that given a modular eigenform $f$ witho…
The Shimura correspondence connects modular forms of integral weights and half-integral weights. One of the directions is realized by the Shintani lift, where the inputs are holomorphic differentials and the outputs are holomorphic modular forms of half-integral weight. In this article, we generalize this lift to differentials of the third kind. As an application we obtain a modularity result concerning the generating series of winding numbers of closed geodesics on the modular curve.
We extend the modularity lifting result of the arXiv:1111.2804 to allow Galois representations with some ramification at p. We also prove modularity mod 2 and 5 of certain Galois representations. We use these results to prove many new cases of the strong Artin conjecture over totally real fields in which 5 is unramified. As an ingredient of the proof, we provide a general result on the automatic analytic continuation of overconvergent p-adic Hilbert modular forms of finite slope which substantially generalizes a similar result in arXiv:1111.2804.
For $K$ an imaginary quadratic field with discriminant $-D_K$ and associated quadratic Galois character $χ_K$, Kojima, Gritsenko and Krieg studied a Hermitian Maass lift of elliptic modular cusp forms of level $D_K$ and nebentypus $χ_K$ via Hermitian Jacobi forms to Hermitian modular forms of level one for the unitary group $U(2,2)$ split over $K$. We generalize this (under certain conditions on $K$ and $p$) to the case of $p$-oldforms of level $pD_K$ and character $χ_K$. To do this, we define an appropriate Hermitian Maass space for general level and prove that it is isomorphic to the space o…
Let k and n be positive even integers. For a cuspidal Hecke eigenform h in the Kohnen plus space of weight k-n/2+1/2, let f be the corresponding primitive form of weight 2k-n for SL(2,Z) under the Shimura correspondence, and I(h) the Duke-Imamoglu-Ikeda lift of h to the space of cusp forms of weight k of genus n. Moreover, let FJ(I(h),1) be the first Fourier-Jacobi coefficient of I(h) and s(FJ(I(h),1)) be the cusp form in the generalized Kohnen plus space of weight k-1/2 corresponding to FJ(I(h),1) under the Ibukiyama isomorphism. We then give an explicit formula for the Koecher-Maass series o…
We prove new modularity lifting theorems for p-adic Galois representations in situations where the methods of Wiles and Taylor--Wiles do not apply. Previous generalizations of these methods have been restricted to situations where the automorphic forms in question contribute to a single degree of cohomology. In practice, this imposes several restrictions -- one must be in a Shimura variety setting and the automorphic forms must be of regular weight at infinity. In this paper, we essentially show how to remove these restrictions. Our most general result is a modularity lifting theorem which, on…
In our previous work, he second and the third named authors constructed the Ikeda type lift for the exceptional group $E_{7,3}$ from an elliptic modular cusp form. In this paper, we prove an explicit formula for the period or the Petersson norm of the Ikeda type lift in terms of the product of the special values of the symmetric square $L$-function of the elliptic modular form. There are similar works done by the first author with his collaborator, but new technical inputs are required and developed to overcome some difficulties coming from the hugeness of $E_{7,3}$.
Typos in the abstract have been corrected. Let $ρ_n$ be an ordinary weight two representation of absolute Galois group of the rationals to $GL_2(\mathcal O/π^n)$. Here $\mathcal O$ is a ramified DVR with uniformiser $π$. If $ρ_n$ satisfies mild hypotheses we lift it to a characteristic zero $\mathcal O$-valued geometric weight two representation. The earlier methods could handle only the unramified case. We show that the deformation ring of a residual representation arising from a newform can be arranged to be a prescribed DVR provided we choose a suitable auxiliary level. We extend earlier pr…
We prove a variety of results on the existence of automorphic Galois representations lifting a residual automorphic Galois representation. We prove a result on the structure of deformation rings of local Galois representations, and deduce from this and the method of Khare and Wintenberger a result on the existence of modular lifts of specified type for Galois representations corresponding to Hilbert modular forms of parallel weight 2. We discuss some conjectures on the weights of $n$-dimensional mod $p$ Galois representations. Finally, we use recent work of Taylor to prove level raising and lo…
We extend the lifting methods of our previous paper to lift reducible odd representations $\barρ:\mathrm{Gal}(\overline{F}/F) \to G(k)$ of Galois groups of global fields $F$ valued in Chevalley groups $G(k)$. Lifting results, when combined with automorphy lifting results pioneered by Wiles in the number field case and the results on the global Langlands correspondence proved by Drinfeld and L. Lafforgue in the function field case, give the only known method to access modularity of mod $p$ Galois representations in both reducible and irreducible cases. In the reducible case this allows one to s…
In this article we give a proof of Serre's conjecture for the case of odd level and arbitrary weight. Our proof does not depend on any generalization of Kisin's modularity lifting results to characteristic 2 (moreover, we will not consider at all characteristic 2 representations at any step of our proof). The key tool in the proof is a very general modularity lifting result of Kisin, which is combined with the methods and results of previous articles on Serre's conjecture by Khare, Wintenberger, and the author, and modularity results of Schoof for semistable abelian varieties of small conducto…
It is known that among Siegel modular forms of degree $2$ and level $1$ the only functions that violate the Ramanujan conjecture are Saito-Kurokawa lifts of modular forms of level $1$. These are precisely the functions whose Fourier coefficients satisfy Maass relations. More generally, the Ramanujan conjecture for $\mathrm{GSp}_4$ is predicted to fail only in case of CAP representations. It is not known though whether the associated Siegel modular forms (of various levels) still satisfy a version of Maass relations. We show that this is indeed the case for the ones related to P-CAP representat…
Our aim is to clarify the relationship between Kudla's and Bruinier's Green functions attached to special cycles on Shimura varieties of orthogonal and unitary type. These functions play a key role in the arithmetic geometry of the special cycles in the context of Kudla's program. In particular, we show that the generating series obtained by taking the differences of the two families of Green functions is a modular form with trivial holomorphic projection. Along the way, we construct a section of the Maass lowering operator for moderate growth modular forms valued in the Weil representation us…
Duke and the second author defined a family of linear maps from spaces of weakly holomorphic modular forms of negative integral weight and level 1 into spaces of weakly holomorphic modular forms of half integral weight and level 4 and showed that these lifts preserve the integrality of Fourier coefficients. We show that the generalization of these lifts to modular forms of genus 0 odd prime level also preserves the integrality of Fourier coefficients.
In this article we present an algorithm that uses the graded algebra structure of Hilbert modular forms to compute the adelic $q$-expansion of Hilbert modular forms of weight one as the quotient of Hilbert modular forms of higher weight. The main improvement to existing methods is that our algorithm can be applied in weight $1$, which fills a gap left by standard computational methods. Additionally, the algorithm can be used to compute Hilbert modular forms over finite fields in all characteristic simultaneously. We use this algorithm to compute a first candidate of a Hilbert modular form of p…
We give explicit pullback formulae for nearly holomorphic Saito-Kurokawa lifts restrict to product of upper half-plane against with product of elliptic modular forms. We generalize the formula of Ichino to modular forms of higher level and free the restriction on weights. The explicit formulae provide non-trivial examples for the refined Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture for $({\rm SO}_5,{\rm SO}_4)$ in the non-tempered cases. As an application, we obtain Deligne's conjecture for critical values of certain automorphic $L$-functions for ${\rm GL}_3 \times {\rm GL}_2$. We also expect to apply our pull…
