We study an analogue of Serre's modularity conjecture for projective representations $\overlineρ: \operatorname{Gal}(\overline{K} / K) \rightarrow \operatorname{PGL}_2(k)$, where $K$ is a totally real number field. We prove new cases of this conjecture when $k = \mathbb{F}_5$ by using the automorphy lifting theorems over CM fields established in previous work of the authors.
Inertial multiplicity bounds for two dimensional projective representations and bounds for the number of $\operatorname{PSL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q)$ and $\operatorname{PGL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q)$ number fields
We prove that many representations $\overlineρ : \operatorname{Gal}(\overline{K} / K) \to \operatorname{GL}_2(\mathbb{F}_3)$, where $K$ is a CM field, arise from modular elliptic curves. We prove similar results when the prime $p = 3$ is replaced by $p = 2$ or $p = 5$. As a consequence, we prove that a positive proportion of elliptic curves over any CM field not containing a 5th root of unity are modular.
Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be a number field of degree $n$. We show that if $\operatorname{Reg}(E)\ll_n |\operatorname{Disc}(E)|^{1/4}$ then the fraction of class group characters for which the Hecke $L$-function does not vanish at the central point is $\gg_{n,\varepsilon} |\operatorname{Disc}|^{-1/4-\varepsilon}$. The proof is an interplay between almost equidistribution of Eisenstein periods over the toral packet in $\mathbf{PGL}_n(\mathbb{Z})\backslash\mathbf{PGL}_n(\mathbb{R})$ associated to the maximal order of $E$, and the escape of mass of the torus orbit associated to the trivial ideal class.
Following a strategy suggested by Michel--Venkatesh, we study the cubic moment of automorphic $L$-functions on $\operatorname{PGL}_2$ using regularized diagonal periods of products of Eisenstein series. Our main innovation is to produce vectors whose integral transforms achieve arbitrarily weighted moments. Applications include general Motohashi-type identities and Weyl-type subconvex bounds for some families of $L$-functions, extending some results of Conrey--Iwaniec and Petrow--Young to the number field setting. We deduce improved estimates for representation numbers of ternary quadratic for…
Using $p$-adic local Langlands correspondence for $\operatorname{GL}_2(\mathbb{Q}_2)$ and an ordinary $R = \mathbb{T}$ theorem, we prove that the support of patched modules for quaternionic forms meet every irreducible component of the potentially semi-stable deformation ring. This gives a new proof of the Breuil-Mézard conjecture for 2-dimensional representations of the absolute Galois group of $\mathbb{Q}_2$, which is new in the case $\overline{r}$ a twist of an extension of the trivial character by itself. As a consequence, a local restriction in Paškūnas' proof of Fontaine-Mazur conjecture…
We show that all permutations in $S_n$ can be generated by affine unicritical polynomials. We use the $\operatorname{PGL}$ group structure to compute the cycle structure of permutations with low Carlitz rank. The tree structure of the group generated by shift and inversion maps is used to study the randomness properties of permutation polynomials.
One version of the classical Lefschetz hyperplane theorem states that for $U \subset \mathbb P^n$ a smooth quasi-projective variety of dimension at least $2$, and $H \cap U$ a general hyperplane section, the resulting map on étale fundamental groups $π_1(H \cap U) \rightarrow π_1(U)$ is surjective. We prove a generalization, replacing the hyperplane by a general $\operatorname{PGL}_{n+1}$-translate of an arbitrary projective variety: If $U \subset \mathbb P^n$ is a normal quasi-projective variety, $X$ is a geometrically irreducible projective variety of dimension at least $n + 1 - \dim U$, and…
We develop an algorithm that determines, for a given squarefree binary form $F$ with real coefficients, a smallest representative of its orbit under $\operatorname{SL}(2,\mathbb Z)$, either with respect to the Euclidean norm or with respect to the maximum norm of the coefficient vector. This is based on earlier work of Cremona and Stoll. We then generalize our approach so that it also applies to the problem of finding an integral representative of smallest height in the $\operatorname{PGL}(2,\mathbb Q)$ conjugacy class of an endomorphism of the projective line. Having a small model of such an …
Cohn and Kumar showed the quadratic character of $q$ modulo $p$ gives the sign of the permutation of Hurwitz primes of norm $p$ induced by the Hurwitz primes of norm $q$ under metacommutation. We demonstrate that these permutations are equivalent to those induced by the right standard action of $\operatorname{PGL}_2 (\mathbb{F}_p)$ on $\mathbb{P}^1 (\mathbb{F}_p)$. This equivalence provides simpler proofs of the results of Cohn and Kumar and characterizes the cycle structure of the aforementioned permutations. Our methods are general enough to extend to all orders over the quaternions with a d…
We prove the Topological Mirror Symmetry Conjecture by Hausel-Thaddeus for smooth moduli spaces of Higgs bundles of type $\operatorname{SL}_n$ and $\operatorname{PGL}_n$. More precisely, we establish an equality of stringy Hodge numbers for certain pairs of algebraic orbifolds generically fibred into dual abelian varieties. Our proof utilises p-adic integration relative to the fibres, and interprets canonical gerbes present on these moduli spaces as characters on the Hitchin fibres using Tate duality. Furthermore we prove for $d$ coprime to $n$, that the number of rank $n$ Higgs bundles of deg…
In this paper, we study third-order modular ordinary differential equations (MODE for short) of the following form $y'''+Q_2(z)y'+Q_3(z)y=0$, $z\in\mathbb{H}=\{z\in\mathbb{C} \,|\,\operatorname{Im}z>0 \}$, where $Q_2(z)$ and $Q_3(z)-\frac12 Q_2'(z)$ are meromorphic modular forms on ${\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ of weight $4$ and $6$, respectively. We show that any quasimodular form of depth $2$ on ${\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ leads to such a MODE. Conversely, we introduce the so-called Bol representation $\hatρ\colon {\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})\to{\rm SL}(3,\mathbb{C})$ for this MODE and give the necessary …
