We give a method of constructing polynomials of arbitrarily large degree irreducible over a global field F but reducible modulo every prime of F. The method consists of finding quadratic f in F[x] whose iterates have the desired property, and it depends on new criteria ensuring all iterates of f are irreducible. In particular when F is a number field in which the ideal (2) is not a square, we construct infinitely many families of quadratic f such that every iterate f^n is irreducible over F, but f^n is reducible modulo all primes of F for n at least 2. We also give an example for each n of a quadratic f with integer coefficients whose iterates are all irreducible over the rationals, whose (n-1)st iterate is irreducible modulo some primes, and whose nth iterate is reducible modulo all primes. From the perspective of Galois theory, this suggests that a well-known rigidity phenomenon for linear Galois representations does not exist for Galois representations obtained by polynomial iteration. Finally, we study the number of primes P for which a given quadratic f defined over a global field has f^n irreducible modulo P for all n.
In recent work, the authors proved a general result on lifting $G$-irreducible odd Galois representations $\mathrm{Gal}(\overline{F}/F) \to G(\overline{\mathbb{F}}_{\ell})$, with $F$ a totally real number field and $G$ a reductive group, to geometric $\ell$-adic representations. In this note we take $G$ to be a classical group and construct many examples of $G$-irreducible representations to which these new lifting methods apply, but to which the lifting methods provided by potential automorphy theorems do not.
We adopt A. J. Irving's sieve method to study the almost-prime values produced by products of irreducible polynomials evaluated at prime arguments. This generalizes the previous results of Irving and Kao, who separately examined the almost-prime values of a single irreducible polynomial evaluated at prime arguments.
Given a reducible Galois representation $\overlineρ: G_{\mathbb{Q}} \rightarrow GL_2( \mathbb{F}_q)$ we show there exists an irreducible deformation $ρ: G_{\mathbb{Q}} \rightarrow GL_2 (\mathbb{W} [[T_1, T_2,.., T_r,....,]])$ of $\overlineρ$ ramified at infinitely many primes, where $\mathbb{W}$ denotes the ring of Witt vectors of $\mathbb{F}_q$. This is a modification of Ramakrishna's result for the irreducible case.
Hooley proved that if $f\in \Bbb Z [X]$ is irreducible of degree $\ge 2$, then the fractions $\{ r/n\}$, $0<r<n$ with $f(r)\equiv 0\pmod n$, are uniformly distributed in $(0,1)$. In this paper we study such problems for reducible polynomials of degree $2$ and $3$ and for finite products of linear factors. In particular, we establish asymptotic formulas for exponential sums over these normalized roots.
We calculate admissible values of r such that a square-free polynomial with integer coefficients, no fixed prime divisor and irreducible factors of degree at most 3 takes infinitely many values that are a product of at most r distinct primes.
We use a Diamond diagram attached to a $2$-dimensional reducible split mod $p$ Galois representation of $\mathrm{Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}_{p}}/\mathbb{Q}_{p^{2}})$ to construct a non-admissible smooth irreducible mod $p$ representation of $GL_{2}(\mathbb{Q}_{p^{2}})$ following the approach of Daniel Le.
Let $K$ be a complete, discretely valued field with finite residue field and $G_K$ its absolute Galois group. The subject of this note is the study of the set of positive integers $d$ for which there exists an absolutely irreducible $\ell$-adic representation of $G_K$ of dimension $d$ with rational traces on inertia. Our main result is that non-Sophie Germain primes are not in this set when the residue characteristic of $K$ is $> 3$. The result stated in the title is a special case.
The work of Bernstein-Zelevinsky and Zelevinsky gives a good understanding of irreducible subquotients of a reducible principal series representation of $GL_n(F)$, $F$ a $p$-adic field (without specifying their multiplicities which is done by a Kazhdan-Lusztig type conjecture). In this paper we make a proposal of a similar kind for principal series representations of $GL_n({\mathbb R})$. Our investigation on principal series representations naturally led us to consider the Steinberg representation for real groups, which has curiuosly not been paid much attention to in the subject (unlike the $…
We study the supersingular curves on Picard modular surfaces modulo a prime $p$ which is inert in the underlying quadratic imaginary field. We analyze the automorphic vector bundles in characteristic $p$, and as an application derive a formula relating the number of irreducible components in the supersingular locus to the second Chern class of the surface.
We extend the lifting methods of our previous paper to lift reducible odd representations $\barρ:\mathrm{Gal}(\overline{F}/F) \to G(k)$ of Galois groups of global fields $F$ valued in Chevalley groups $G(k)$. Lifting results, when combined with automorphy lifting results pioneered by Wiles in the number field case and the results on the global Langlands correspondence proved by Drinfeld and L. Lafforgue in the function field case, give the only known method to access modularity of mod $p$ Galois representations in both reducible and irreducible cases. In the reducible case this allows one to s…
Given a field $K$ and $n > 1$, we say that a polynomial $f \in K[x]$ has newly reducible $n$th iterate over $K$ if $f^{n-1}$ is irreducible over $K$, but $f^n$ is not (here $f^i$ denotes the $i$th iterate of $f$). We pose the problem of characterizing, for given $d,n > 1$, fields $K$ such that there exists $f \in K[x]$ of degree $d$ with newly reducible $n$th iterate, and the similar problem for fields admitting infinitely many such $f$. We give results in the cases $(d,n) \in \{(2,2), (2,3), (3,2), (4,2)\}$ as well as for $(d,2)$ when $d \equiv 2 \bmod{4}$. In particular, we show that for all…
Building upon the work of A. Booker and C. Pomerance (2017), we prove that for a prime power $q \geq 7$, every residue class modulo an irreducible polynomial $F \in \mathbb{F}_q[X]$ has a non-constant, square-free representative which has no irreducible factors of degree exceeding $\text{deg}~F -1$. We also give applications to generating sequences of irreducible polynomials.
We study GL_2(F)-invariant periods on representations of GL_2(A), where F is a nonarchimedean local field and A/F a product of field extensions of total degree 3. For irreducible representations, a theorem of Prasad shows that the space of such periods has dimension at most 1, and is non-zero when a certain epsilon-factor condition holds. We give an extension of this result to a certain class of reducible representations (of Whittaker type), extending results of Harris--Scholl when A is the split algebra F x F x F.
Let $F$ be a local field with residue characteristic $p$, let $C$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p$, and let $\mathbf{G}$ be a connected reductive $F$-group. In a previous paper, Florian Herzig and the authors classified irreducible admissible $C$-representations of $G=\mathbf{G}(F)$ in terms of supercuspidal representations of Levi subgroups of $G$. Here, for a parabolic subgroup $P$ of $G$ with Levi subgroup $M$ and an irreducible admissible $C$-representation $τ$ of $M$, we determine the lattice of subrepresentations of $\mathrm{Ind}_P^G τ$ and we show that $\mathrm{Ind…
Polynomial factoring has famous practical algorithms over fields-- finite, rational \& $p$-adic. However, modulo prime powers it gets hard as there is non-unique factorization and a combinatorial blowup ensues. For example, $x^2+p \bmod p^2$ is irreducible, but $x^2+px \bmod p^2$ has exponentially many factors! We present the first randomized poly(deg $f, \log p$) time algorithm to factor a given univariate integral $f(x)$ modulo $p^k$, for a prime $p$ and $k \leq 4$. Thus, we solve the open question of factoring modulo $p^3$ posed in (Sircana, ISSAC'17). Our method reduces the general problem…
