We study the large $N$ limit of the superconformal index of a large class of 5d $\mathcal{N}=1$ superconformal field theories and show it is given by the square of the partition function on the squashed five-sphere. We show this simple relation implies a Cardy formula in 5d, which is valid in an "extended" regime in which fugacities are finite and $N$ is large. For theories with weakly coupled gravity duals we conjecture this large $N$ Cardy formula universally accounts for the microscopic entropy of spinning black holes in AdS$_{6}$. We check this explicitly for known black hole solutions in massive type IIA and type IIB string theory, carrying two angular momenta and one electric charge, and predict the entropy of black holes carrying multiple electric charges, yet to be constructed. We also discuss large $N$ properties of the $S^{3}_{b}\timesΣ_{\mathfrak{g}}$ partition function, extending previous results to theories with type IIB duals.
We study the superconformal index of the N=4 super-Yang-Milles theory on S^3 X S^1 with the half BPS superconformal surface operator (defect) inserted at the great circle of S^3. The half BPS superconformal surface operators preserve the same supersymmetry as well as the symmetry of the chemical potential used in the definition of the superconformal index, so the structure and the parameterization of the superconformal index remain unaffected by the presence of the surface operator. On the surface defect, a two-dimensional (4,4) superconformal field theory resides, and the four-dimensional sup…
We develop techniques to calculate an index for four dimensional superconformal field theories. This superconformal index is counting BPS operators which preserve only one supercharge. To calculate the superconformal index we quantize the field theory on S^3 X R and show that the twisted theory has an appropriate mass gap. This allows for the interactions to be switched off continuously without the superconformal index being changed. We test those techniques for theories which go through a non-trivial RG flow and for Seiberg dual theories. This leads to the conjecture of some group/number theo…
In these lectures, we give a pedagogical introduction to the superconformal index. This is the writeup of the lectures given at the Winter School "YRISW 2020" and is to appear in a special issue of JPhysA. The lectures are at a basic level and are geared towards a beginning graduate student interested in working with the superconformal index.
We introduce a generalization of the S^2 x S^1 superconformal index where background gauge fields with magnetic flux are coupled to the global symmetries of the theory. This allows one to gauge a global symmetry at the level of the index, which we use to show the matching of the superconformal index for N=2 SQED with N_f flavors and its mirror dual.
We derive an integral representation for the superconformal index of the strongly-coupled N=2 superconformal field theory with E_6 flavor symmetry. The explicit expression of the index allows highly non-trivial checks of Argyres-Seiberg duality and of a class of S-dualities conjectured by Gaiotto.
The superconformal algebras of Ademollo et al are generalised to a multi-index form. The structure obtained is similar to the Moyal Bracket analogue of the Neveu-Schwarz Algebra.
We study quantum mechanical systems with $\mathfrak{osp}(4^{*}|4)$ superconformal symmetry. We classify unitary lowest-weight representations of this superconformal algebra and define an index which receives contributions from short and semi-short multiplets only. We consider the example of a quantum mechanical $σ$-model with hyper-Kähler target $\mathcal{M}$ equipped with a triholomorphic homothety. The superconformal index coincides with the Witten index of a novel form of supersymmetric quantum mechanics for a particle moving on $\mathcal{M}$ in a background magnetic field in which an unbro…
We study the highest-weight representation of N=2 supersymmetric Schrodinger algebra which appears in non-relativistic superconformal field theories in (1+2) dimension. We define the index for the non-relativistic superconformal field theories and study its properties. As a concrete example, we compute the index for the non-relativistic limit of N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons-matter theory recently proposed by Aharony et al.
Recently a prescription to compute the four-dimensional N = 2 superconformal index in the presence of certain BPS surface defects has been given. These surface defects are labelled by symmetric representations of SU(N). In the present paper we give a prescription to compute the superconformal index in the presence of surface defects labelled by arbitrary representations of SU(N). Furthermore, we extend the dictionary between the N = 2 superconformal Schur-index and correlators of q-deformed Yang-Mills to incorporate such surface defects.
The superconformal index is an important invariant of superconformal field theories. In this note we refine the superconformal index by inserting the charge conjugation operator C. We construct a matrix integral for this charged index for N=4 SYM with SU(N) gauge group. The key ingredient for the construction is a "charged character," which reduces to Tr(C) for singlet representations of the gauge group. For each irreducible real SU(N) representation, we conjecture that this charged character is equal to the standard character for a corresponding representation of SO(N+1) or SP(N-1), for N eve…
We identify the 2d topological theory underlying the N=2 4d superconformal index with an explicit model: q-deformed 2d Yang-Mills. By this route we are able to evaluate the index of some strongly-coupled 4d SCFTs, such as Gaiotto's T_N theories.
We calculate and study the general superconformal index for the 6d U(N) (2,0) theory with four chemical potentials, from the indices of gauge theories on CP^2 x R. Our index agrees with the large N supergravity index on AdS_7 x S^4 at low energies, and also yields the negative 'Casimir energy' with an N^3 scaling which was recently calculated from a QFT on S^5. Our approach also suggests a systematic study of the (1,0) superconformal indices.
The analytic properties of the N = 2 superconformal index are given a physical interpretation in terms of certain BPS surface defects, which arise as the IR limit of supersymmetric vortices. The residue of the index at a pole in flavor fugacity is interpreted as the index of a superconformal field theory without this flavor symmetry, but endowed with an additional surface defect. The residue can be efficiently extracted by acting on the index with a difference operator of Ruijsenaars-Schneider type. By imposing the associativity constraints of S-duality, we are then able to evaluate the index …
We explore the connection between the holographic Weyl anomaly and the superconformal index in six-dimensional $(1,0)$ theories. Using earlier results from holographic computations of the $\mathcal O(1)$ contributions $δa$ and $δ(c-a)$ to the corresponding six-dimensional Weyl anomaly coefficients, we derive a pair of differential operators that extracts these values from the large-$N$ single-trace index. In doing so, we also highlight the structure of these corrections in terms of group theory invariants of the superconformal representations.
We evaluate the superconformal index of the Y^{p,q} quiver gauge theories using Romeslberger's prescription. For the conifold quiver Y^{1,0} we find exact agreement at large N with a previous calculation in the dual AdS_5 X T^{1,1} supergravity.
We consider the superconformal index of class S theories of type D, which arise by compactification of the (2,0) D_n theories on a punctured Riemann surface C. We also allow for the presence of twist lines on C associated to the Z_2 outer automorphism of D_n. For a two-parameter slice (p=0, q, t) in the space of superconformal fugacities, we determine the 2d TQFT that computes the index.
5d Yang-Mills theory with an Sp(N) gauge group admits a discrete analog of the theta parameter. We describe the origin of this parameter in N=1 theories from Type I' string theory, and study its effect on the 5d superconformal fixed point theories with an Sp(1)=SU(2) gauge group by computing the superconformal index. Our result confirms the lack of global symmetry enhancement in the so-called \tilde{E}_1 theory.
We show that the superconformal index of N=1 superconformal field theories in four dimensions has an asymptotic growth of states which is exponential in the charges. Our analysis holds in a Cardy-like limit of large charges, for which the index is dominated by small values of chemical potentials. In this limit we find the saddle points of the integral that defines the superconformal index using two different methods. One method, valid for finite N, is to first take the Cardy-like limit and then find the saddle points. The other method is to analyze the saddle points at large N and then take th…
We define an index for $\mathfrak{osp}(4^{*}|4)$ superconformal quantum mechanics on a hyperKähler cone. The index is defined on an equivariant symplectic resolution of the cone, which acts as a regulator. We present evidence that the index does not depend on the choice of resolution parameters and encodes information about the spectrum of (semi-) short representations of the superconformal algebra of the unresolved space. In particular, there are two types of multiplet which can be counted exactly using the index. These correspond to holomorphic functions on the cone and to the generators of …
We study the factorization of four dimensional N=1 superconformal index for U(N) (SU(N)) SQCD with N_F fundamental and anti-fundamental chiral multiplets. When both the anomaly free R-charge assignment and the traceless condition for total vorticities are satisfied, we find that the superconformal index factorizes to a pair of the elliptic uplift of the vortex partition functions. We also study the relation between open topological string and the the elliptic uplift of the vortex partition functions. In the three dimensional limit, we show index for U(N) theory reduces to the factorized form o…
We consider the 4d superconformal index for ${\cal N}=2$ gauge theories on $S^1 \times L(r,1)$, where $L(r,1)$ is a Lens space. We focus on a one-parameter slice of the three-dimensional fugacity space and in that sector we show S-duality. We do so by rewriting the index in a way that resembles a correlation function of a 2d TFT, which however, we do not identify.
We show that specializations of the 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal index labeled by an integer $N$ is given by $\textrm{Tr}\,{\cal M}^N$ where ${\cal M}$ is the Kontsevich-Soibelman monodromy operator for BPS states on the Coulomb branch. We provide evidence that the states enumerated by these limits of the index lead to a family of 2d chiral algebras $\mathcal{A}_{N}$. This generalizes the recent results for the $N=-1$ case which corresponds to the Schur limit of the superconformal index. We show that this specialization of the index leads to the same integrand as that of the elliptic genu…
We study the BPS index for the four-dimensional rank-one N=2 superconformal field theories H_0, H_1, H_2, E_6, E_7, E_8. We consider compactifications of the E-string theory on T^2 in which these theories arise as low energy limits. Using this realization we clarify the general structure of the BPS index. The index is characterized by two exponents and a sequence of invariants. We determine the exponents and the first few invariants.
The UV fixed point theory of SU(2) gauge theory with N_f = 0,1,...,7 flavors is believed to have the enlarged E_{N_f +1} flavor symmetry. Actually it is not easy to check this conjecture because the UV theory is strongly-coupled, however, computation of certain SUSY protected quantities provides strong evidence for the enhancement of flavor symmetry. We study the superconformal index for SU(2) gauge theory with N_f = 0, 1 flavors in details, and we give a support for the enhancement by studying combinatorial structure of the superconformal indexes of these theories. We also give a nontrivial e…
We provide the geometrical meaning of the ${\cal N}=4$ superconformal index. With this interpretation, the ${\cal N}=4$ superconformal index can be realized as the partition function on a Scherk-Schwarz deformed background. We apply the localization method in TQFT to compute the deformed partition function since the deformed action can be written as a $δ_ε$-exact form. The critical points of the deformed action turn out to be the space of flat connections which are, in fact, zero modes of the gauge field. The one-loop evaluation over the space of flat connections reduces to the matrix integral…
Inspired by recent work by Closset, Kim and Willett, we derive a new formula for the superconformal (or supersymmetric) index of 4d N=1 theories. Such a formula is a finite sum, over the solution set of certain transcendental equations that we dub Bethe Ansatz Equations, of a function evaluated at those solutions.
We find a four-dimensional N=1 gauge theory which flows to the minimal interacting N=2 superconformal field theory, the Argyres-Douglas theory, in the infrared up to the extra free chiral multiplets. The gauge theory is obtained from a certain N=1 preserving deformation of the N=2 SU(2) gauge theory with four fundamental hypermultiplets. From this description, we compute the full superconformal index and find agreements with the known results in special limits.
We derive a general formula of an index for three dimensional N=2 superconformal field theories with general R-charge assignments to chiral multiplets by using the localization method in S^2xS^1 background. As examples we compute the index for theories in a few mirror pairs, and confirm the agreement of the indices in each mirror pair.
We consider families of theories with large N=4 superconformal symmetry. We define an index generalizing the elliptic genus of theories with N=2 symmetry. In contrast to the N=2 case, the new index constrains part of the non-BPS spectrum. Motivated by aspects of the AdS/CFT correspondence we study the index in the examples of symmetric product theories. We give a physical interpretation of the Hecke operators which appear in the expressions for partition functions of such theories. Finally, we compute the index for a nontrivial example of a symmetric product theory.
We present a unifying theme relating BPS partition functions and superconformal indices. In the case with complex SUSY central charges (as in N=2 in d=4 and N=(2,2) in d=2) the known results can be reinterpreted as the statement that the BPS partition functions can be used to compute a specialization of the superconformal indices. We argue that in the case with real central charge in the supersymmetry algebra, as in N=1 in d=5 (or the N=2 in d=3), the BPS degeneracy captures the full superconformal index. Furthermore, we argue that refined topological strings, which captures 5d BPS degeneracie…
We consider field theory side of new multiple Seiberg dualities conjectured within superconformal index matching approach. We study the case of SU(2) supersymmetric QCD and find that the numerous conjectured duals are different faces of handful of master theories. These different faces are inequivalent to each other in a very peculiar sense. Some master theories are fully known; we construct superpotentials for others. We confirm that all index identities correspond to theories flowing to one and the same theory in the infrared, thus supporting the conjecture of index matching for Seiberg dual…
We prove that 3d superconformal index for general $\mathcal N=2$ U(N) gauge group with fundamentals and anti-fundmentals with/without Chern-Simons terms is factorized into vortex and anti-vortex partition function. We show that for simple cases, 3d vortex partition function coincides with a suitable topological open string partition function. We provide much more elegant derivation at the index level for $\mathcal N=2$ Seiberg-like dualities of unitary gauge groups with fundamantal matters and $\mathcal N=4$ mirror symmetry
We calculate the superconformal index for N=6 Chern-Simons-matter theory with gauge group U(N) X U(N) at arbitrary allowed value of the Chern-Simons level k. The calculation is based on localization of the path integral for the index. Our index counts supersymmetric gauge invariant operators containing inclusions of magnetic monopole operators, where latter operators create magnetic fluxes on 2-sphere. Through analytic and numerical calculations in various sectors, we show that our result perfectly agrees with the index over supersymmetric gravitons in AdS_4 X S^7/Z_k in the large N limit. Mon…
Supersymmetric partition function of $\mathcal N=1$ superconformal theories on $S^1_β \times S^3$ is related to the superconformal index receiving contributions from short representations. The leading coefficients in the small $β$ (high "temperature") expansion of the index were previously related to the conformal anomaly coefficients of the theory. Assumptions underlying universality of these relations were tested only for simplest low-spin unitary multiplets. Here we consider examples of higher derivative non-unitary $\mathcal N=1$ multiplets that naturally appear in the context of extended …
We investigate the superconformal index of four-dimensional N=1 superconformal field theories that arise on coincident M5 branes wrapping a holomorphic curve in a local Calabi-Yau three-fold. The structure of the index is very similar to that which appears in the special case preserving N=2 supersymmetry. We first compute the index for the fixed points that admit a known four-dimensional ultraviolet description and prove infrared equivalence at the level of the index for all such constructions. These results suggest a formulation of the index as a two-dimensional topological quantum field theo…
We propose a prescription to calculate the superconformal index of the ${\cal N}=4$ $U(N)$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with finite $N$ on the AdS side. The finite $N$ corrections are included as contributions of D3-branes wrapped around three-cycles in $\boldsymbol{S}^5$, which are calculated as the index of the gauge theories realized on the wrapped branes. The single-wrapping contribution has been studied in a previous work, and we further confirm that the inclusion of multiple-wrapping contributions correctly reproduces the higher order terms as far as we have checked numerically.
This is the 8th article in the collection of reviews "Exact results in N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories", ed. J. Teschner. The article reviews the superconformal index. It is often simpler to calculate than instanton partition functions, but nevertheless allows one to perform many nontrivial checks of conjectured dualities. It turns out to admit a representation in terms of a new type of topological field theory associated to the Riemann surfaces $C$ parameterising the class $\cal S$ theories.
We consider the Nekrasov-Shatashvili (NS) limit of the five-dimensional superconformal index and propose a novel prescription for selecting the finite contributions. Applying the latter to various examples of U(1) theories, we find that the 5D NS index can be reproduced using recent techniques of Córdova and Shao, who related the 4D Schur index to the BPS spectrum of the theory on the Coulomb branch. In this picture, the 5D instanton solitons are interpreted as additional flavour nodes in an associated 5D BPS quiver.
We investigate the N=2 superconformal index for supersymmetric quiver Chern-Simons theories with large N gauge groups. After general arguments about the large N limit, we compute the first few terms in the series expansion of the index for theories proposed as dual theories to homogeneous spaces V^{5,2}, Q^{1,1,1}, Q^{2,2,2}, M^{1,1,1}, and N^{0,1,0}. We confirm that the indices have symmetries expected from the isometries of dual manifolds.
We review aspects of superconformal indices in three dimension. Three dimensional superconformal indices can be exactly computed by using localization method including monopole contribution, and can be applied to provide evidences for mirror duality, AdS_4/CFT_3 correspondence and global symmetry enhancement of strongly coupled gauge theories. After reviewing, we discuss the possibility of global symmetry enhancement in a finite rank of gauge group.
We compute superconformal indices for $\mathcal{N} = 3$ $\hat{ADE}$ Chern-Simons quiver gauge theories with a product gauge group $\prod_i U(N)_i$, using the method of supersymmetric localization. We also perform a large $N$ analysis of the index. This index includes contribution from non zero magnetic flux sector. The fact that these theories have a weakly coupled UV completion in terms of $\mathcal{N}= 3$ supersymmetric Chern-Simons Yang-Mills theories enables us to apply the localization technique. Such theories have dual M-theory description on $\mathrm{AdS}_4\times M_7$, where $M_7$ is a …
We study the superconformal index of S-fold theories by using AdS/CFT correspondence. It has been known that the index in the large $N$ limit is reproduced as the contribution of bulk Kaluza-Klein modes. For finite $N$ D3-branes wrapped around the non-trivial cycle in $\boldsymbol{S}^5/\mathbb{Z}_k$, which corresponds to Pfaffian-like operators, give the corrections of order $q^N$ to the index. We calculate the finite $N$ corrections by analyzing the fluctuations of wrapped D3-branes. Comparisons to known results show that our formula correctly reproduces the corrections up to errors of order …
In this note we discuss several properties of the Schur index of N=2 superconformal theories in four dimensions. In particular, we study modular properties of this index under SL(2,Z) transformations of its parameters.
We study the Cardy-like limit of the superconformal index of generic $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFTs with ABCD gauge algebra, providing strong evidence for a universal formula that captures the behavior of the index at finite order in the rank and in the fugacities associated to angular momenta. The formula extends previous results valid at lowest order, and generalizes them to generic SCFTs. We corroborate the validity of our proposal by studying several examples, beyond the well-understood toric class. We compute the index also for models without a weakly-coupled gravity dual, whose gravitational anom…
We present prescriptions for obtaining the central charges, $a$ and $c$, of a four dimensional superconformal quantum field theory from the superconformal index. At infinite $N$, for holographic theories dual to Sasaki-Einstein 5-manifolds the prescriptions give the $\mathcal{O}(1)$ parts of the central charges. This allows us, among other things, to show the exact AdS/CFT matching of $a$ and $c$ for arbitrary toric quiver CFTs without adjoint matter that are dual to smooth Sasaki-Einstein 5-manifolds. In addition, we include evidence from non-holographic theories for the applicability of thes…
We study the large-$N$ limit of superconformal index for two strongly interacting Chern-Simons theories in three dimensions with $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry, and compare the result against the AdS/CFT dual, namely the data of full Kaluza-Klein reduction spectra obtained using the exceptional field theory technique. The two theories of interest are mABJM and GJV theories, which are obtained as IR fixed point of RG whose UV description is ABJM and maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory respectively. We confirm agreement and the duality persists. For the case of mABJM it turns out that we n…
This contribution to the proceedings of the 1999 NATO ASI on Quantum Geometry at Akureyri, Iceland, is based on notes of lectures given by A. Strominger. Topics include N-particle conformal quantum mechanics, extended superconformal quantum mechanics and multi-black hole moduli spaces.
We present a prescription for obtaining the difference of the central charges, c-a, of a four dimensional superconformal quantum field theory from its single-trace index. The formula is derived from a one-loop holographic computation, but is expected to be valid independent of holography. We demonstrate the prescription with several holographic and non-holographic examples. As an application of our formula, we show the AdS/CFT matching of c-a for arbitrary toric quiver CFTs without adjoint matter that are dual to smooth Sasaki-Einstein 5-manifolds.
We work out the factorization of the 3d superconformal index for N = 2 $U(N_c)$ gauge theory withone adjoint chiral multiplet as well as $N_f$ fundamental, $N_a$ anti-fundamental chiral multiplets. Using the factorization, one can prove the Seiberg-like duality for N = 4 $U(N_c)$ theory with $N_f$ hypermultiplets at the index level. We explicitlyshow that monopole operators violating unitarity bound in a bad theory are mapped to free hypermultiplets in the dual side. For N = 2 $U(N_c)$ theory with one adjoint matter $X$, $N_f$ fundamental, $N_a$ anti-fundamental chiral multiplets with superpote…
We explore N=(1,0) superconformal six-dimensional theories arising from M5-branes probing a transverse A_k singularity. Upon circle compactification to 5 dimensions, we describe this system with a dual pq-web of five-branes and propose the spectrum of basic five-dimensional instanton operators driving global symmetry enhancement. For a single M5-brane, we find that the exact partition function of the 5d quiver gauge theory matches the 6d (1,0) index, which we compute by letter counting. We finally show that S-duality of the pq-web implies new relations among vertex correlators of qW-algebrae.
We probe the 3d-3d correspondence for mapping cylinder/torus using the superconformal index. We focus on the case when the fiber is a once-punctured torus (Σ_{1,1}). The corresponding 3d field theories can be realized using duality domain wall theories in 4d N=2* theory. We show that the superconformal indices of the 3d theories are the SL(2,C) Chern-Simons partition function on the mapping cylinder/torus. For the mapping torus, we also consider another realization of the corresponding 3d theory associated with ideal triangulation. The equality between the indices from the two descriptions for…
A relation between the 4d superconformal index and the S^3 partition function is studied with focus on the 4d and 3d actions used in localization. In the case of vanishing Chern-Simons levels and round S^3 we explicitly show that the 3d action is obtained from the 4d action by dimensional reduction up to terms which do not affect the exact results. By combining this fact and a recent proposal concerning a squashing of S^3 and SU(2) Wilson line, we obtain a formula which gives the partition function depending on the Weyl weight of chiral multiplets, real mass parameters, FI parameters, and a sq…
We study surface defects in 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ $SU(N)$ superconformal gauge theories of class $\mathcal{S}_k$ obtained from the 6d (1,0) theories of type $A_{N-1}$, which are worldvolume theories on $N$ M5-branes at $\mathbb{C}^2/\mathbb{Z}_k$ singularities, compactified on Riemann surfaces with punctures. First we apply a method based on Riemann surface description and obtain the superconformal index of the theories in the presence of surface defects labelled by arbitrary symmetric representations of $su(N)$. Then we propose another description for the same surface defects, which involves 4d-…
We study a superconformal index for ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills on $S^1 \times S^3$ with a half BPS duality domain wall inserted at the great two-sphere in $S^3$. The index is obtained by coupling the 3d generalized superconformal index on the duality domain wall with 4d half-indices. We further consider insertions of line operators to the configuration and propose integral equations which express that the 3d index on duality domain wall is a duality kernel relating half indices of two line operators related by the duality map. We explicitly check the proposed integral equations for various …
We obtain the enropy of Schwarzschild and charged black holes in D>4 from superconformal gases that live on p=10-D dimensional brane-antibrane systems wrapped on T^p. The preperties of the strongly coupled superconformal theories such as the appearance of hidden dimensions (for p=1,4) and fractional strings (for p=5) are crucial for our results. In all cases, the Schwarzschild radius is given by the transverse fluctuations of the branes and antibranes due to the finite temperature. We show that our results can be generalized to multicharged black holes.
