We study the Cardy-like limit of the superconformal index of generic $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFTs with ABCD gauge algebra, providing strong evidence for a universal formula that captures the behavior of the index at finite order in the rank and in the fugacities associated to angular momenta. The formula extends previous results valid at lowest order, and generalizes them to generic SCFTs. We corroborate the validity of our proposal by studying several examples, beyond the well-understood toric class. We compute the index also for models without a weakly-coupled gravity dual, whose gravitational anomaly is not of order one.

Proving the 6d Cardy Formula and Matching Global Gravitational Anomalies

A Cardy formula for 6d superconformal field theories (SCFTs) conjectured by Di Pietro and Komargodski in [1] governs the universal behavior of the supersymmetric partition function on $S^1_β\times S^5$ in the limit of small $β$ and fixed squashing of the $S^5$. For a general 6d SCFT, we study its 5d effective action, which is dominated by the supersymmetric completions of perturbatively gauge-invariant Chern-Simons terms in the small $β$ limit. Cardy Limits of 6d Superconformal Theories

We explore the supersymmetric partition functions of 6d SCFTs on $\mathbb{R}^4\times T^2$ with non-vanishing charges for compatible global symmetries. We utilize the elliptic genera for self-dual strings and compute the free energy of 6d SCFTs in the Cardy limit. For a 6d (2,0) theory on $N$ M5-brane, we obtain the free energy proportional to $N^3$. We find that the origin of $N^3$ comes from the condensation of the self-dual strings, whose total number is proportional to ${N^3-N\over 6}$. We further extend our analysis to the general E-string theory and obtain its Cardy free energy.

6d superconformal Cardy formulas

We study the superconformal index of 6d SCFTs from their 't Hooft anomalies. In the Cardy limit where the angular momenta on $S^5$ are large, we show that the leading free energy, as well as a few subleading corrections, can be computed from the 6d anomaly polynomials. Our large $N$ free energy accounts for the entropy of supersymmetric black holes in dual $AdS_7$.

A 4d N=1 Cardy Formula

We study the asymptotic behavior of the (modified) superconformal index for 4d $\mathcal{N} = 1$ gauge theory. By considering complexified chemical potential, we find that the `high-temperature limit' of the index can be written in terms of the conformal anomalies $3c-2a$. We also find macroscopic entropy from our asymptotic free energy when the Hofman-Maldacena bound $1/2 < a/c < 3/2$ for the interacting SCFT is satisfied. We discuss the Cardy limit of 3d supersymmetric partition functions which allow the factorization into the hemisphere indices: the generalized superconformal index, the refined topologically twisted index and the squashed sphere partition function. Black Holes and (0,4) SCFTs from Type IIB on K3

We study the central charges and levels of 2d $\mathcal{N}=(0,4)$ superconformal field theories that are dual to four- and five-dimensional BPS black holes in compactifications of type IIB string theory on a K3 surface. Anomaly Matching Across Dimensions and Supersymmetric Cardy Formulae

't Hooft anomalies are known to induce specific contributions to the effective action at finite temperature. We present a general method to directly calculate such contributions from the anomaly polynomial of a given theory, including a term which involves a $U(1)$ connection for the thermal circle isometry. The Cardy limit of the topologically twisted index and black strings in AdS$_5$

We evaluate the topologically twisted index of a general four-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = 1$ gauge theory in the "high-temperature" limit. The index is the partition function for $\mathcal{N} = 1$ theories on $S^2 \times T^2$, with a partial topological twist along $S^2$, in the presence of background magnetic fluxes and fugacities for the global symmetries.
