In [1] we defined a new kind of space called 'structured space' which locally resembles, near each of its points, some algebraic structure. We noted in the conclusion of the cited paper that the maps $f_s$ and $h$, which are of great importance in the theory of structured spaces, have some connections with the notions of presheaves (and hence also sheaves) and vector bundles. There are well known cohomology theories involving such objects; this suggests the possibility of the existence of (co)homology theories for structured spaces which are somehow related to $f_s$ and $h$. In this paper we indeed develop two cohomology theories for structured spaces: one of them arises from $f_s$, while the other one arises from $h$. In order to do this, we first develop a more general cohomology theory (called rectangular cohomology in the finite case, and square cohomology in the infinite case), which can actually be applied also in many other situations, and then we obtain the cohomology theories for structured spaces as simple consequences of this theory.
In [1] we introduced the concept of structured space, which is a topological space that locally resembles some algebraic structures. In [2] we proceeded the study of these spaces, developing two cohomology theories. The aim of this paper is to define categories of structured spaces, (pre)sheaves with values in such categories, and generalised notions of vector bundles, ringed spaces and schemes. Then, we will construct (using some techniques and also the general method in Section 2 of [2]) various cohomology theories for these objects.
This is a survey paper on cohomology theories for $A_\infty$ and $E_\infty$ ring spectra. Different constructions and main properties of topological André-Quillen cohomology and of topological derivations are described. We give sample calculations of these cohomology theories and outline applications to the existence of $A_\infty$ and $E_\infty$ structures on various spectra. We also explain the relationship between topological derivations, spaces of multiplicative maps and moduli spaces of multiplicative structures.
We define a symmetric monoidal structure on the parametrised stable homotopy category over a base space with an action of an $E_\infty$ operad. We discuss products, orientations and push-forwards in parametrised cohomology theories corresponding to parametrised ring spectra. Finally, we construct parametrised ring spectra representing twisted K-theory and twisted Spinc-cobordism.
We prove that the Morava-$K$-theory-based Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence has good convergence properties whenever the base space is a $p$-local finite Postnikov system with vanishing $(n+1)$st homotopy group.
This survey discusses our results and conjectures concerning supersymmetric field theories and their relationship to cohomology theories. A careful definition of supersymmetric Euclidean field theories is given, refining Segal's axioms for conformal field theories. We state and give an outline of the proof of various results relating field theories to cohomology theories.
We propose the notion of a coarse cohomology theory and study the examples of coarse ordinary cohomology, coarse stable cohomotopy and of coarse cohomology theories obtained by dualizing coarse homology theories. We show that the dualizing spectrum of a finitely generated torsion-free group only depends on the coarse motivic spectrum represented by the underlying bornological coarse space of the group. This in particular implies a conjecture of J. R. Klein that the dualizing spectrum of a group is a coarse invariant.
We show that a representable motivic cohomology theory admits a unique normalized SL^c-orientation if the zeroth cohomology presheaf is a Zariski sheaf. We also construct Thom isomorphisms in SL-oriented cohomology for SL^c-bundles and obtain new results on the η-torsion characteristic classes, in particular, we prove that the Euler class of an oriented bundle admitting a (possibly non-orientable) odd rank subbundle is annihilated by the Hopf element.
Let NG0 denote the category of all pointed numerically generated spaces and continuous maps preserving base-points. In [SYH], we described a passage from bivariant functors to generalized homology and cohomology theories. In this paper, we construct a bivariant functor such that the associated cohomology is the Cech cohomology and the homology is the Steenrod homology (at least for compact metric spaces).
We introduce cohomology and homology theories for small categories with general coefficient systems from simplex categories first studied by Thomason. These theories generalize at once Baues-Wirsching cohomology and homology and other more classical theories. We analyze naturality and functoriality properties of these theories and construct associated spectral sequences for functors between small categories.
We consider the global aspects of the 6-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(1, 0)$ theory arising from the coupling of the vector multiplet to the tensor multiplet. We show that the Yang-Mills field and its dual, when both are abelianized, combine to define a class in twisted cohomology with the twist arising from the class of the $B$-field, in a duality-symmetric manner. We then show that this lifts naturally to a class in twisted (differential) K-theory. Alternatively, viewing the B-field in both $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ and $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ theories, not as a twist but as an invertible element, leads t…
We make some computations in stable motivic homotopy theory over Spec \mathbb{C}, completed at 2. Using homotopy fixed points and the algebraic K-theory spectrum, we construct a motivic analogue of the real K-theory spectrum KO. We also establish a theory of connective covers to obtain a motivic version of ko. We establish an Adams spectral sequence for computing motivic ko-homology. The E_2-term of this spectral sequence involves Ext groups over the subalgebra A(1) of the motivic Steenrod algebra. We make several explicit computations of these E_2-terms in interesting special cases.
We construct the Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence (AHSS) for twisted differential generalized cohomology theories. This generalizes to the twisted setting the authors' corresponding earlier construction for differential cohomology theories, as well as to the differential setting the AHSS for twisted generalized cohomology theories, including that of twisted K-theory by Rosenberg and Atiyah-Segal. In describing twisted differential spectra we build on the work of Bunke-Nikolaus, but we find it useful for our purposes to take an approach that highlights direct analogies with classical bundles…
We uncover a somewhat surprising connection between spaces of multiplicative maps between $A_\infty$-ring spectra and topological Hochschild cohomology. As a consequence we show that such spaces become infinite loop spaces after looping only once. We also prove that any multiplicative cohomology operation in complex cobordisms theory $MU$ canonically lifts to an $A_\infty$-map $MU\to MU$. This implies, in particular, that the Brown-Peterson spectrum $BP$ splits off $MU$ as an $A_\infty$-ring spectrum.
We show that every sheaf on the site of smooth manifolds with values in a stable (infinity,1)-category (like spectra or chain complexes) gives rise to a differential cohomology diagram and a homotopy formula, which are common features of all classical examples of differential cohomology theories. These structures are naturally derived from a canonical decomposition of a sheaf into a homotopy invariant part and a piece which has a trivial evaluation on a point. In the classical examples the latter is the contribution of differential forms. This decomposition suggest a natural scheme to analyse …
We consider operations between two multiplicative, complex orientable cohomology theories. Under suitable hypotheses, we construct a map from unstable to stable operations, left-inverse to the usual map from stable to unstable operations. In the main example, where the target theory is one of the Morava K-theories, this provides a simple and explicit description of a splitting arising from the Bousfield-Kuhn functor
Ginzburg, Kapranov and Vasserot conjectured the existence of equivariant elliptic cohomology theories. In this paper, to give a description of equivariant spectra of the theories, we study an intermediate theory, quasi-elliptic cohomology. We formulate a new category of orthogonal G-spectra and construct explicitly an orthogonal G-spectrum of quasi-elliptic cohomology in it. The idea of the construction can be applied to a family of equivariant cohomology theories, including Tate K-theory and generalized Morava E-theories. Moreover, this construction provides a functor from the category of glo…
We give an account of well known calculations of the RO(Q)-graded coefficient rings of some of the most basic Q-equivariant cohomology theories, where Q is a group of order 2. One purpose is to advertise the effectiveness of the Tate square, showing it has advantages over the slice spectral sequences in algebraically simple cases. A second purpose is to give a single account showing how to translate between the languages of different approaches. [v2 corrects some typos and adds some thanks and references, v3 corrects a few more typos].
This is the Ph.D. dissertation of the author. The project has been motivated by the conjecture that the Hopkins-Miller tmf spectrum can be described in terms of `spaces' of conformal field theories. In this dissertation, spaces of field theories are constructed as classifying spaces of categories whose objects are certain types of field theories. If such a category has a symmetric monoidal structure and its components form a group, by work of Segal, its classifying space is an infinite loop space and defines a cohomology theory. This has been carried out for two classes of field theories: (i) …
We provide an axiomatic framework for the study of smooth extensions of generalized cohomology theories. Our main results are about the uniqeness of smooth extensions, and the identification of the flat theory with the R/Z-theory. In particular, we show that there is a unique smooth extension of K-theory and of MU-cobordism with a unique multiplication, and that the flat theory in these cases is naturally isomorphic to the homotopy theorist's version of the cohomology theory with R/Z-coefficients. For this we only require a small set of natural compatibility conditions.
In this paper, we prove a generalization of Kempf-Laksov formula for the degeneracy loci classes in even infinitesimal cohomology theories of the Grassmannian bundle and the Lagrangian Grassmannian bundle.
Cheeger-Simons differential characters and differential $K$-theory are refinements of ordinary cohomology theory and topological $K$-theory respectively, and they are examples of differential cohomology. Each of these differential cohomology theories fits into a hexagon on the cohomology level. We show that these differential cohomology theories fit into hexagons on the cocycle level, and the hexagons on the cocycle level induce the hexagons on the cohomology level.
In this paper we give a geometric construction of the Borel equivariant (co)homology for spaces with a $G$-action, where $G$ is a compact Lie group with the property that the adjoint representation is orientable. A nice feature of these constructions is that there are corresponding Poincaré dual (co)homology theories called backwards (co)homology. This gives rise to a third relative (co)homology theory which we call stratifold Tate (co)homology. These Tate groups agree with the original definition of Tate cohomology for finite groups given by Swan. All constructions in this paper are geometric…
We show that Shipley's "detection functor" for symmetric spectra generalizes to motivic symmetric spectra. As an application, we construct motivic strict ring spectra representing morphic cohomology, semi-topological $K$-theory, and semi-topological cobordism for complex varieties. As a further application to semi-topological cobordism, we show that it is related to semi-topological $K$-theory via a Conner-Floyd type isomorphism and that after inverting a lift of the Friedlander-Mazur $s$-element in morphic cohomology, semi-topological cobordism becomes isomorphic to periodic complex cobordism…
The main goal of the present paper is the construction of twisted generalized differential cohomology theories and the comprehensive statement of its basic functorial properties. Technically it combines the homotopy theoretic approach to (untwisted) generalized differential cohomology developed by Hopkins-Singer and later by the first author and D. Gepner with the oo-categorical treatement of twisted cohomology by Ando-Blumberg-Gepner. We introduce the notion of a differential twist for a given generalized cohomology theory and construct twisted differential cohomology groups (resp. spectra). …
We compute the homotopy groups of spectra associated by a theorem of Lurie to the Shimura curves of discriminants 6, 10, and 14, beginning with a computation of integral rings of automorphic forms on these curves. As an application, we find that a generalized truncated Brown-Peterson spectrum BP<2> is an E_\infty ring spectrum at the prime 3.
In this note we introduce primitive cohomology groups of locally conformal symplectic manifolds $(M^{2n}, ω, θ)$. We study the relation between the primitive cohomology groups and the Lichnerowicz-Novikov cohomology groups of $(M^{2n}, ω, θ)$, using and extending the technique of spectral sequences developed by Di Pietro and Vinogradov for symplectic manifolds. We discuss related results by many peoples, e.g. Bouche, Lychagin, Rumin, Tseng-Yau, in light of our spectral sequences. We calculate the primitive cohomology groups of a $(2n+2)$-dimensional locally conformal symplectic nilmanifold as …
For an arbitrary compact Lie group G, we describe a model for rational G-spectra with toral geometric isotropy and show that there is a convergent Adams spectral sequence based on it. The contribution from geometric isotropy at a subgroup K of the maximal torus of G is captured by a module over H^*(BW_G(K)_e) with an action of π_0(W_G(K)), where W_G(K)=N_G(K)/K and the subscript e denotes the identity component.
We show that Sullivan's model of rational differential forms on a simplicial set $X$ may be interpreted as a (kind of) $0|1$-dimensional supersymmetric quantum field theory over $X$, and, as a consequence, concordance classes of such theories represent the rational cohomology of $X$. We introduce the notion of superalgebraic cartesian sets, a concept of space which should roughly be thought of as a blend of simplicial sets and generalized supermanifolds, but valid over an arbitrary base ring. Every simplicial set gives rise to a superalgebraic cartesian set and so we can formulate the notion o…
The category of rational G-equivariant cohomology theories for a compact Lie group $G$ is the homotopy category of rational G-spectra and therefore tensor-triangulated. We show that its Balmer spectrum is the set of conjugacy classes of closed subgroups of $G$, with the topology corresponding to the topological poset introduced in the author's study of rational Mackey functors. This is used to classify the collections of subgroups arising as the geometric isotropy of finite $G$-spectra. The ingredients for this classification are (i) the algebraic model of free spectra of the author and B.Ship…
In this paper it is shown that multiplicative cohomology theories that are rationally even -- a technical condition that is often satisfied -- the Hopkins-Singer construction of generalized differential cohomology has a unital, graded commutative multiplicative structure. To this end, an explicit integration and a differential cohomology theory for pairs are also developed.
In 1994, Grojnowski gave a construction of an equivariant elliptic cohomology theory associated to an elliptic curve over the complex numbers. Grojnowski's construction has seen numerous applications in algebraic topology and geometric representation theory, however the construction is somewhat ad hoc and there has been significant interest in the question of its geometric interpretation. We show that there are two global models for Grojnowski's theory, which shed light on its geometric meaning. The first model is constructed as the Borel-equivariant cohomology of a double free loop space, and…
In this note we show that the n-th Morava E-cohomology group of a finite spectrum with action of the n-th Morava stabilizer group can be recovered from the (n+1)-st Morava E-cohomology group with action of the (n+1)-st Morava stabilizer group.
We consider spectral sequences in smooth generalized cohomology theories, including differential generalized cohomology theories. The main differential spectral sequences will be of the Atiyah-Hirzebruch (AHSS) type, where we provide a filtration by the Cech resolution of smooth manifolds. This allows for systematic study of torsion in differential cohomology. We apply this in detail to smooth Deligne cohomology, differential topological complex K-theory, and to a smooth extension of integral Morava K-theory that we introduce. In each case we explicitly identify the differentials in the corres…
In this paper we construct orthogonal $G-$spectra up to a weak equivalence for the quasi-theory $QE_{n, G}^*(-)$ corresponding to certain cohomology theories $E$. The construction of the orthogonal $G-$spectrum for quasi-elliptic cohomology can be applied to the constructions for quasi-theories.
Quasi-elliptic cohomology is a variant of elliptic cohomology theories. It is the orbifold K-theory of a space of constant loops. For global quotient orbifolds, it can be expressed in terms of equivariant K-theories. Thus, the constructions on it can be made in a neat way. This theory reflects the geometric nature of the Tate curve. In this paper we provide a systematic introduction of its construction and definition.
The main aim of this paper is the construction of a smooth (sometimes called differential) extension \hat{MU} of the cohomology theory complex cobordism MU, using cycles for \hat{MU}(M) which are essentially proper maps W\to M with a fixed U(n)-structure and U(n)-connection on the (stable) normal bundle of W\to M. Crucial is that this model allows the construction of a product structure and of pushdown maps for this smooth extension of MU, which have all the expected properties. Moreover, we show, using the Landweber exact functor principle, that \hat{R}(M):=\hat{MU}(M)\otimes_{MU^*}R defines …
A bicategory approach to differential cohomology is presented. Based on the axioms of Bunke-Schick, a symmetric monoidal groupoid is associated to differential refinements of cohomology theories. It is proven that such differential refinements are unique up to equivalence of the corresponding symmetric monoidal groupoids and the existing uniqueness results for rationally-even theories are interpreted in this framework. Moreover we show how the bicategory formalism may be used to give a simple construction of a differential refinement for any generalized cohomology theory, based on a refinement…
The paper is devoted to an approach to the bounded cohomology theory based on the theories of simplicial sets and Postnikov systems. In particular, the main results of the bounded cohomology theory of topological spaces are extended to arbitrary Kan (fibrant) simplicial sets.
We develop model categories of rational equivariant spectra whose homotopy categories are equivalent to the category of rational equivariant cohomology theories. We prove that given an orthogonal decomposition of the unit in the rational Burnside ring, the model category of rational equivariant spectra decomposes into a product of localisations. We use this result to reprove the classification of rational equivariant cohomology theories for finite groups and to study such cohomology theories for the group O(2). We then concentrate on a split piece of the O(2) case and relate it to rational SO(…
We study discrete symmetries of Dijkgraaf-Witten theories and their gauging in the framework of (extended) functorial quantum field theory. Non-abelian group cohomology is used to describe discrete symmetries and we derive concrete conditions for such a symmetry to admit 't Hooft anomalies in terms of the Lyndon-Hochschild-Serre spectral sequence. We give an explicit realization of a discrete gauge theory with 't Hooft anomaly as a state on the boundary of a higher-dimensional Dijkgraaf-Witten theory. This allows us to calculate the 2-cocycle twisting the projective representation of physical …
In "Generalized Group Characters and Complex Oriented Cohomology Theories", Hopkins, Kuhn, and Ravenel develop a way to study cohomology rings of the form E^*(BG) in terms of a character map. The character map can be interpreted as a map of cohomology theories beginning with a height n cohomology theory E and landing in a height 0 cohomology theory with a rational algebra of coefficients that is constructed out of E. In this paper we use the language of p-divisible groups to extend their construction for Morava E-theory so that the character map can land in every height t between 0 and n.
In [1] we introduced the notion of 'structured space', i.e. a space which locally resembles various algebraic structures. In [2] and [3] we studied some cohomology theories related to these space. In this paper we continue in this direction: while in [2] we mainly focused on cohomologies arising from $f_s$ and $h$, and in [3] we considered cohomologies for generalisations of objects which involved structured spaces, here we deal with (co)homologies coming from the poset associated to a structured space via an equivalence relation defined at the end of Section 4 in [1]. More precisely, we will …
We present a closed model structure for the category of pro-spectra in which the weak equivalences are detected by stable homotopy pro-groups. With some bounded-below assumptions, weak equivalences are also detected by cohomology as in the classical Whitehead theorem for spectra. We establish an Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence in this context, which makes possible the computation of topological K-theory (and other generalized cohomology theories) of pro-spectra.
For each manifold or effective orbifold $Y$ and commutative ring $R$, we define a new homology theory $MH_*(Y;R)$, $M$-$homology$, and a new cohomology theory $MH^*(Y;R)$, $M$-$cohomology$. For $MH_*(Y;R)$ the chain complex $(MC_*(Y;R),\partial)$ is generated by quadruples $[V,n,s,t]$ satisfying relations, where $V$ is an oriented manifold with corners, $n\in\mathbb N$, and $s:V\to{\mathbb R}^n$, $t:V\to Y$ are smooth with $s$ proper near 0 in ${\mathbb R}^n$. We show that $MH_*(Y;R),MH^*(Y;R)$ satisfy the Eilenberg-Steenrod axioms, and so are canonically isomorphic to conventional (co)homolog…
