We consider operations between two multiplicative, complex orientable cohomology theories. Under suitable hypotheses, we construct a map from unstable to stable operations, left-inverse to the usual map from stable to unstable operations. In the main example, where the target theory is one of the Morava K-theories, this provides a simple and explicit description of a splitting arising from the Bousfield-Kuhn functor
Boardman, Johnson, and Wilson gave a precise formulation for an unstable algebra over a generalized cohomology theory. Modifying their definition slightly in the case of complex K-theory by taking into account its periodicity, we prove that an unstable algebra for complex $K$-theory is precisely a filtered $λ$-ring, and vice versa.
We give a concrete method to explicitly compute the rational cohomology of the unordered configuration spaces of connected, oriented, closed, even-dimensional manifolds of finite type which we have implemented in Sage [S+09]. As an application, we give acomplete computation of the stable and unstable rational cohomology of unordered configuration spaces in some cases, including that of $\mathbb{CP}^3$ and a genus 1 Riemann surface, which is equivalently the homology of the elliptic braid group. In an appendix, we also give large tables of unstable and stable Betti numbers of unordered configur…
We construct Hodge filtered function spaces associated to infinite loop spaces. For Brown-Peterson cohomology, we show that the corresponding Hodge filtered spaces satisfy an analog of Wilson's unstable splitting. As a consequence, we obtain an analog of Quillen's theorem for Hodge filtered Brown-Peterson cohomology for complex manifolds.
In this paper we conjecture the stability and vanishing of a large piece of the unstable rational cohomology of SL_n Z, of mapping class groups, and of Aut(F_n).
For stable degree zero operations, and also for additive unstable operations of bidegree (0,0), it is known that the centre of the ring of operations for complex cobordism is isomorphic to the corresponding ring of connective complex K-theory operations. Similarly, the centre of the ring of BP operations is the corresponding ring for the Adams summand of p-local connective complex K-theory. Here we show that, in the additive unstable context, this result holds with BP replaced by BP<n> for any n. Thus, for all chromatic heights, the only central operations are those coming from K-theory.
The algebra S of symmetric invariants over the field with two elements is an unstable algebra over the Steenrod algebra A, and is isomorphic to the mod two cohomology of BO, the classifying space for vector bundles. We provide a minimal presentation for S in the category of unstable A-algebras, i.e., minimal generators and minimal relations. From this we produce minimal presentations for various unstable A-algebras associated with the cohomology of related spaces, such as the BO(2^m-1) that classify finite dimensional vector bundles, and the connected covers of BO. The presentations then show …
In a preceding article the authors and Tran Ngoc Nam constructed a minimal injective resolution of the mod 2 cohomology of a Thom spectrum. A Segal conjecture type theorem for this spectrum was proved. In this paper one shows that the above mentioned resolutions can be realized topologically. In fact there exists a family of cofibrations inducing short exact sequences in mod 2 cohomology. The resolutions above are obtained by splicing together these short exact sequences. Thus the injective resolutions are realizable in the best possible sense. In fact our construction appears to be in some se…
The spectral sequence associated to the Arone-Goodwillie tower for the n-fold loop space functor is used to show that the first two non-trivial layers of the nilpotent filtration of the reduced mod 2 cohomology of a (sufficiently connected) space with nilpotent cohomology are comparable. This relies upon the theory of unstable modules over the mod 2 Steenrod algebra, together with properties of a generalized class of almost unstable modules which is introduced here. An essential ingredient of the proof is a non-vanishing result for certain extension groups in the category of unstable modules l…
We study the mod p cohomology of the classifying space of the projective unitary group PU(p). We first proof that old conjectures due to J.F. Adams, and Kono and Yagita about the structure of the mod p cohomology of classifying space of connected compact Lie groups held in the case of PU(p). Finally, we proof that the classifying space of the projective unitary group PU(p) is determined by its mod p cohomology as an unstable algebra over the Steenrod algebra for p>3, completing previous works for the cases p=2,3.
For a connected Noetherian unstable algebra $R$ over the mod $p$ Steenrod algebra, we prove versions of theorems of Duflot and Carlson on the depth of $R$, originally proved when $R$ is the mod $p$ cohomology ring of a finite group. This recovers the aforementioned results, and also proves versions of them when $R$ is the mod $p$ cohomology ring of a compact Lie group, a profinite group with Noetherian cohomology, a Kac--Moody group, a discrete group of finite virtual cohomological dimension, as well as for certain other discrete groups. More generally, our results apply to certain finitely ge…
Bordifications of the moduli spaces of tropical curves and abelian varieties, and unstable cohomology of $\mathrm{GL}_g(\mathbb{Z})$ and $\mathrm{SL}_g(\mathbb{Z})$
We investigate the topological nilpotence degree, in the sense of Henn-Lannes-Schwartz, of a connected Noetherian unstable algebra $R$. When $R$ is the mod $p$ cohomology ring of a compact Lie group, Kuhn showed how this invariant is controlled by centralizers of elementary abelian $p$-subgroups. By replacing centralizers of elementary abelian $p$-subgroups with components of Lannes' $T$-functor, and utilizing the techniques of unstable algebras over the Steenrod algebra, we are able to generalize Kuhn's result to a large class of connected Noetherian unstable algebras. We show how this genera…
We provide a new algebraic description of the structure on the set of all unstable cohomology operations for a suitable generalised cohomology theory, E^*. Our description is as a graded and completed version of a Tall-Wraith monoid. The E^*-cohomology of a space X is a module for this Tall-Wraith monoid. We also show that the corresponding Hopf ring of unstable co-operations is a module for the Tall-Wraith monoid of unstable operations. Further examples are provided by considering operations from one theory to another.
Relying on the computation of the Andre-Quillen homology groups for unstable Hopf algebras, we prove that the mod p cohomology of the n-connected cover of a finite H-space is always finitely generated as algebra over the Steenrod algebra.
While intersection cohomology is stable under small resolutions, both ordinary and intersection cohomology are unstable under smooth deformation of singularities. For complex projective algebraic hypersurfaces with an isolated singularity, we show that the first author's cohomology of intersection spaces is stable under smooth deformations in all degrees except possibly the middle, and in the middle degree precisely when the monodromy action on the cohomology of the Milnor fiber is trivial. In many situations, the isomorphism is shown to be a ring homomorphism induced by a continuous map. This…
Localized at almost all primes, we describe the structure of differentials in several important spectral sequences that compute the cohomology of classifying spaces of topological Kac-Moody groups. In particular, we show that for all but a finite set of primes, these spectral sequences collapse and that there are no additive extension problems. We also describe some appealing consequences of these results. The main tool is the use of the naturality properties of unstable Adams operations on these classifying spaces.
In this paper we study the cohomological Conley index of arbitrary isolated invariant continua for continuous maps $f \colon U \subseteq \mathbb{R}^d \to \mathbb{R}^d$ by analyzing the topological structure of their unstable manifold. We provide a simple dynamical interpretation for the first cohomological Conley index, describing it completely, and relate it to the cohomological Conley index in higher degrees. A number of consequences are derived, including new computations of the fixed point indices of isolated invariant continua in dimensions 2 and 3. Our approach exploits certain attractor…

In the 1980's, the magic properties of the cohomology of elementary abelian groups as modules over the Steenrod algebra initiated a long lasting interaction between topology and modular representation theory in natural characteristic. The Adams-Gunawardena-Miller theorem in particular, showed that their decomposition is governed by the modular representations of the semi-groups of square matrices. Applying Lannes' T functor on the summands L P := Hom Mn(Fp) (P, H * (F p) n) defines an intriguing construction in representation theory. We show that T(L P) $\sim$ = L P $\oplus$ H * V 1 $\otimes$ …
We discuss two extensions of results conjectured by Nick Kuhn about the non-realization of unstable algebras as the mod $p$ singular cohomology of a space, for $p$ a prime. The first extends and refines earlier work of the second and fourth authors, using Lannes' mapping space theorem. The second (for the prime $2$) is based on an analysis of the $-1$ and $-2$ columns of the Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence, and of the associated extension. In both cases, the statements and proofs use the relationship between the categories of unstable modules and functors between $\Fp$-vector spaces. The sec…
Let $X$ be a topological space with Noetherian mod $p$ cohomology and let $C^*(X;\mathbb{F}_p)$ be the commutative ring spectrum of $\mathbb{F}_p$-valued cochains on $X$. The goal of this paper is to exhibit conditions under which the category of module spectra on $C^*(X;\mathbb{F}_p)$ is stratified in the sense of Benson, Iyengar, Krause, providing a classification of all its localizing subcategories. We establish stratification in this sense for classifying spaces of a large class of topological groups including Kac--Moody groups as well as whenever $X$ admits an $H$-space structure. More ge…
Commutative K-theory, a cohomology theory built from spaces of commuting matrices, has been explored in recent work of Adem, Gómez, Gritschacher, Lind, and Tillman. In this article, we use unstable methods to construct explicit representatives for the real commutative K-theory classes on surfaces. These classes arise from commutative O(2)-valued cocycles, and are analyzed via the point-wise inversion operation on commutative cocycles.
The mod p cohomology of a space comes with an action of the Steenrod Algebra. L. Schwartz [A propos de la conjecture de non realisation due a N. Kuhn, Invent. Math. 134, No 1, (1998) 211--227] proved a conjecture due to N. Kuhn [On topologicaly realizing modules over the Steenrod algebra, Annals of Mathematics, 141 (1995) 321--347] stating that if the mod $p$ cohomology of a space is in a finite stage of the Krull filtration of the category of unstable modules over the Steenrod algebra then it is locally finite. Nevertheless his proof involves some finiteness hypotheses. We show how one can re…
We describe additive (unstable) operations from a theory A^* obtained from Algebraic Cobordism of M.Levine-F.Morel by change of coefficients to any oriented cohomology theory B^*. We prove that there is 1-to-1 correspondence between the set of operations, and the set of transformations: A^n((P^{\infty})^{\times r}) ---> B^m((P^{\infty})^{\times r}) satisfying certain simple properties. This provides an effective tool of constructing such operations. As an application, we prove that (unstable) additive operations in Algebraic Cobordism are in 1-to-1 correspondence with the L\otimes_Z Q-linear c…
We study a family of Lie algebras {hO} which are defined for cyclic operads O. Using his graph homology theory, Kontsevich identified the homology of two of these Lie algebras (corresponding to the Lie and associative operads) with the cohomology of outer automorphism groups of free groups and mapping class groups of punctured surfaces, respectively. In this paper we introduce a hairy graph homology theory for O. We show that the homology of hO embeds in hairy graph homology via a trace map which generalizes the trace map defined by S. Morita. For the Lie operad we use the trace map to find la…
Let X be a finitistic space with non-trivial cohomology groups H^in(X;Z)=Z with generators v_i, where i = 0, 1, 2, 3. We say that X has cohomology type (a, b) if v_1^2 = av_2 and v_1v_2 = bv_3 . In this note, we determine the mod 2 cohomology ring of the orbit space X/G of a free action of G = Z_2 on X, where both a and b are even. In this case, we observed that there is no equivariant map S^m --> X for m > 3n, where S^m has the antipodal action. Moreover, it is shown that G can not act freely on space X which is of cohomology type (a, b) where a is odd and b is even. We also obtain the mod 2 …
It is not known whether or not the stable rational cohomology groups $\tilde H^*(Aut(F_\infty);\Q)$ always vanish. We show that either the rational cohomology does not vanish in certain dimensions, or the integral cohomology of a moduli space of pointed graphs does not stabilize in certain other dimensions. Similar results are stated for groups of outer automorphisms. This yields that $H^5(\hat Q_m; \mathbb{Z})$, $H^6(\hat Q_m; \mathbb{Z})$, and $H^5(Q_m; \mathbb{Z})$ never stabilize as $m \to \infty$, where the moduli spaces $\hat Q_m$ and $Q_m$ are the quotients of the spines $\hat X_m$ and …
We study two notions of relative differential cohomology, using the model of differential characters. The two notions arise from the two options to construct relative homology, either by cycles of a quotient complex or of a mapping cone complex. We discuss the relation of the two notions of relative differential cohomology to each other. We discuss long exact sequences for both notions, thereby clarifying their relation to absolute differential cohomology. We construct the external and internal product of relative and absolute characters and show that relative differential cohomology is a righ…
In this paper we provide a computation of the mod 2 cohomology groups of the third finite subset space of the sphere $S^n$ using known results about the cohomology of the symmetric product of spheres.
The Hilbert scheme X^{[a]} of points on a complex manifold X is a compactification of the configuration space of a-element subsets of X. The integral cohomology of X^{[a]} is more subtle than the rational cohomology. In this paper, we compute the mod 2 cohomology of X^{[2]} for any complex manifold X, and the integral cohomology of X^{[2]} when X has torsion-free cohomology. The results of this paper are used in Voisin's work on the universal CH_0 group of cubic hypersurfaces, because the crucial point there is to study the 2-torsion in the Chow group.
The main goal of the present paper is the construction of twisted generalized differential cohomology theories and the comprehensive statement of its basic functorial properties. Technically it combines the homotopy theoretic approach to (untwisted) generalized differential cohomology developed by Hopkins-Singer and later by the first author and D. Gepner with the oo-categorical treatement of twisted cohomology by Ando-Blumberg-Gepner. We introduce the notion of a differential twist for a given generalized cohomology theory and construct twisted differential cohomology groups (resp. spectra). …
