Let NG0 denote the category of all pointed numerically generated spaces and continuous maps preserving base-points. In [SYH], we described a passage from bivariant functors to generalized homology and cohomology theories. In this paper, we construct a bivariant functor such that the associated cohomology is the Cech cohomology and the homology is the Steenrod homology (at least for compact metric spaces).
We compute the cohomology of crystallographic groups with holonomy of prime order. As an application we compute the group of gerbes associated to many six--dimensional toroidal orbifolds arising in string theory.
This paper extends the relation established for group cohomology by Green, Hunton and Schuster between chromatic phenomena in stable homotopy theory and certain natural subrings of singular cohomology. This exploits the theory due to Henn, Lannes and Schwartz of unstable algebras over the Steenrod algebra localized away from nilpotents.
For any Coxeter group W, we define a filtration of H^*(W;ZW) by W-submodules and then compute the associated graded terms. More generally, if U is a CW complex on which W acts as a reflection group we compute the associated graded terms for H_*(U) and, in the case where the action is proper and cocompact, for H^*_c(U).
Given a root system, the Weyl chambers in the co-weight lattice give rise to a real toric variety, called the real toric variety associated to the Weyl chambers. We compute the integral cohomology groups of real toric varieties associated to the Weyl chambers of type $C_n$ and $D_n$, completing the computation for all classical types.
For n>2, we prove the mod 2 cohomology of the finite Chevalley group Spin_n(F_q) is isomorphic to that of the classifying space of the loop group of the spin group Spin(n).
The main goal of this article is to study the cohomology rings and their applications of moment-angle complexes associated to Gorenstein* complexes, especially, the applications in combinatorial commutative algebra and combinatorics. First, we give a topological characterization of Gorenstein* complexes in terms of Alexander duality (as an application we give a topological proof of Stanley's Theorem). Next we give some cohomological transformation formulae of $\mathcal {Z}_{K}$, which are induced by some combinatorial operations on the Gorenstein* complex $K$, such as the connected sum operati…
Let W be a finite irreducible Coxeter group and let X_W be the classifying space for G_W, the associated Artin group. If A is a commutative unitary ring, we consider the two local systems L_q and L_q' over X_W, respectively over the modules A[q,q^{-1}] and A[[q,q^{-1}]], given by sending each standard generator of G_W into the automorphism given by the multiplication by q. We show that H^*(X_W,L_q') = H^{*+1}(X_W,L_q) and we generalize this relation to a particular class of algebraic complexes. We remark that H^*(X_W,L_q') is equal to the cohomology with trivial coefficients A of the Milnor fi…
Self-distributive (SD) structures form an important class of solutions to the Yang--Baxter equation, which underlie spectacular knot-theoretic applications of self-distributivity. It is less known that one go the other way round, and construct an SD structure out of any left non-degenerate (LND) set-theoretic YBE solution. This structure captures important properties of the solution: invertibility, involutivity, biquandle-ness, the associated braid group actions. Surprisingly, the tools used to study these associated SD structures also apply to the cohomology of LND solutions, which generalize…
Given a Coxeter system $(W,S)$ and a positive real multiparameter $\bq$, we study the "weighted $L^2$-cohomology groups," of a certain simplicial complex $Σ$ associated to $(W,S)$. These cohomology groups are Hilbert spaces, as well as modules over the Hecke algebra associated to $(W,S)$ and the multiparameter $q$. They have a "von Neumann dimension" with respect to the associated "Hecke - von Neumann algebra," $N_q$. The dimension of the $i^th$ cohomology group is denoted $b^i_q(Σ)$. It is a nonnegative real number which varies continuously with $q$. When $q$ is integral, the $b^i_q(Σ)$ are t…
From a root system, one may consider the arrangement of reflecting hyperplanes, as well as its toric and elliptic analogues. The corresponding Weyl group acts on the complement of the arrangement and hence on its cohomology. We consider a sequence of linear, toric, or elliptic arrangements which arise from a family of root systems of type A, B, C, or D, and we show that the rational cohomology stabilizes as a sequence of Weyl group representations. Our techniques combine a Leray spectral sequence argument similar to that of Church in the type A case along with FI$_W$-module theory which Wilson…
Given a compact stratified pseudomanifold with a Thom-Mather stratification and a class of riemannian metrics over its regular part, we study the relationships between the $L^{2}$ de Rham and Hodge cohomology and the intersection cohomology of $X$ associated to some perversities. More precisely, to a kind of metric which we call \emph{quasi edge with weights}, we associate two general perversities in the sense of G. Friedman, $p_{g}$ and its dual $q_{g}$. We then show that the absolute $L^{2}$ Hodge cohomology is isomorphic to the maximal $L^{2}$ de Rham cohomology and this is in turn isomorph…
We generalise the notion of a Barge-Diamond complex, in the one-dimensional case, to a mixed system of tiling substitutions. This gives a way of describing the associated tiling space as an inverse limit of Barge-Diamond complexes. We give an effective method for calculating the Čech cohomology of the tiling space via an exact sequence relating the associated sequence of substitution matrices and certain subcomplexes appearing in the approximants. As an application, we show that there exists a system of three substitutions on two letters which exhibit an uncountable collection of minimal tilin…
In [1] it was shown that K^, a certain differential cohomology functor associated to complex K-theory, satisfies the Mayer-Vietoris property when the underlying manifold is compact. It turns out that this result is quite general. The work that follows shows the M-V property to hold on compact manifolds for any differential cohomology functor J^ associated to any Z-graded cohomology functor J(, Z) which, in each degree, assigns to a point a finitely generated group. The approach is to show that the result follows from Diagram 1, the commutative diagram we take as a definition of differential co…
The deformations of an infinite dimensional algebra may be controlled not just by its own cohomology but by that of an associated diagram of algebras, since an infinite dimensional algebra may be absolutely rigid in the classical deformation theory for single algebras while depending essentially on some parameters. Two examples studied here, the function field of a sphere with four marked points and the first Weyl algebra, show, however, that the existence of these parameters may be made evident by the cohomology of a diagram (presheaf) of algebras constructed from the original. The Cohomology…
The cohomology on the complement of hyperplanes with the coefficients in the rank one local system associated to a generic weight vanishes except in the highest dimension. In this paper, we construct matroids or arrangements and its weights with non-vanishing cohomology of Orlik-Solomon algebras, using decomposable relations arising from Latin hypercubes.
An old result of the first author and David Lieberman says that if a compact Kaehler manifold X admits a holomorphic vector field V having at least one zero, then the Dolbeault cohomology algebra H^*(X, Ω^*) of X is isomorphic with the bigraded algebra associated to a certain filtered graded ring. If V has isolated zeros this is the graded algebra associated to a certain filtration of the coordinate ring of the scheme Z defined by zero(V). The purpose of this note is to show that if V is generated by a torus action then equivariant Dolbeault cohomology can be used to give direct geometric proo…
We describe the equivariant cohomology ring of rationally smooth projective embeddings of reductive groups. These embeddings are the projectivizations of reductive monoids. Our main result describes their equivariant cohomology in terms of roots, idempotents, and underlying monoid data. Also, we characterize those embeddings whose equivariant cohomology ring is obtained via restriction to the associated toric variety. Such characterization is given in terms of the closed orbits.
We show that the cohomology groups usually associated with racks and quandles agree with the Quillen cohomology groups for the algebraic theories of racks and quandles, respectively. We also explain how this makes available the entire range of tools that comes with a Quillen homology theory, such as long exact sequences (transitivity) and excision isomorphisms (flat base change).
We discuss Massey products in a N-graded Lie algebra cohomology. One of the main examples is the positive part L_1 of the Witt algebra $W$. We consider an associated graded algebra m_0 of L_1 with respect to the descending central series and prove that H*(m_0) is generated with respect to non-trivial Massey products by one cohomology H^1(m_0).

In this paper we analyse the topological group cohomology of finite-dimensional Lie groups. We introduce a technique for computing it (as abelian groups) for torus coefficients by the naturally associated long exact sequence. The upshot in there is that certain morphisms in this long exact coefficient sequence can be accessed (at least for semi-simple Lie groups) very conveniently by the Chern-Weil homomorphism of the naturally associated compact dual symmetric space. Since the latter is very well-known, this gives the possibility to compute the topological group cohomology of the classical si…
