We discuss Massey products in a N-graded Lie algebra cohomology. One of the main examples is the positive part L_1 of the Witt algebra $W$. We consider an associated graded algebra m_0 of L_1 with respect to the descending central series and prove that H*(m_0) is generated with respect to non-trivial Massey products by one cohomology H^1(m_0).
In this work we construct nontrivial Massey products in the cohomology of moment-angle manifolds corresponding to polytopes from the Pogorelov class. This class includes the dodecahedron and all fullerenes, i. e. simple 3-polytopes with only 5-gonal and 6-gonal facets. The existence of a nontrivial Massey product implies the nonformality of the space in the sense of rational homotopy theory.
We study the twisted cohomology groups of $A_\infty$-algebras defined by twisting elements and their behavior under morphisms and homotopies using the bar construction. We define higher Massey products on the cohomology groups of general $A_\infty$-algebras and establish the naturality under morphisms and their dependency on defining systems. The above constructions are also considered for $C_\infty$-algebras. We construct a spectral sequence converging to the twisted cohomology groups an show that the higher differentials are given by the $A_\infty$-algebraic Massey products.
Motivated by the construction of Steenrod cup-$i$ products in the singular cochain algebra of a space and in the algebra of non-commutative differential forms, we define a category of binomial cup-one differential graded algebras over the integers and over prime fields of positive characteristic. The Steenrod and Hirsch identities bind the cup-product, the cup-one product, and the differential in a package that we further enhance with a binomial ring structure arising from a ring of integer-valued rational polynomials. This structure allows us to define the free binomial cup-one differential g…
We extend Massey products from cohomology to differential cohomology via stacks, organizing and generalizing existing constructions in Deligne cohomology. We study the properties and show how they are related to more classical Massey products in de Rham, singular, and Deligne cohomology. The setting and the algebraic machinery via stacks allow for computations and make the construction well-suited for applications. We illustrate with several examples from differential geometry and mathematical physics.
We define an obstruction to the formality of a differential graded algebra over a graded operad defined over a commutative ground ring. This obstruction lives in the derived operadic cohomology of the algebra. Moreover, it determines all operadic Massey products induced on the homology algebra, hence the name of derived universal Massey product.
We show that, in general, there exist non-vanishing triple Massey products in the cohomology with finite field coefficients of a complex hypersurface complement. In contrast, the Massey products, triple and higher, in the rational cohomology of such a space are all known to vanish.
We study the relationship between the higher Massey products on the cohomology $H$ of a differential graded algebra, and the $A_\infty$ structures induced on $H$ via homotopy transfer techniques.
We show how and when it is possible to detect and recover higher Massey products on the cohomology $H$ of a differential graded algebra $A$ with higher multiplications on quasi-isomorphic $A_\infty$ structures on $H$.
We provide a uniform definition of higher order Toda brackets in a general setting, covering the known cases of long Toda brackets for topological spaces and chain complexes and Massey products for differential graded algebras, among others.
The purpose of this paper is to compare two spectral sequences converging to the cohomology of a configuration space. The collapsing of these spectral sequences is established, in some cases, using Massey products.
For $x$ an element of a field other than $0$ or $1$, we compute the order $n$ Massey products $$\langle (1-x)^{-1}, x^{-1}, \ldots, x^{-1}, (1-x)^{-1} \rangle$$ of $n-2$ factors of $x^{-1}$ and two factors of $(1-x)^{-1}$ by embedding $\mathbb{P}^1 - \{0,1,\infty\}$ into its Picard variety and constructing $\operatorname{Gal}(k^s/k)$ equivariant maps from $π_1$ applied to this embedding to unipotent matrix groups. This method produces obstructions to $π_1$-sections of $\mathbb{P}^1 - \{0,1,\infty\}$, partial computations of obstructions of Jordan Ellenberg, and also computes the Massey product…
We give a combinatorial classification of non-trivial triple Massey products of three dimensional classes in the cohomology of a moment-angle complex. This work improves on a result by Denham and Suciu (2007) by considering triple Massey products with non-trivial indeterminacy.
In this note I use cup-products and higher Massey products to find topological lower bounds on the number of geometrically distinct critical points of any closed 1-form in a given cohomology class.
The problem of existence of nontrivial Massey products in cohomology of a space is well-known in algebraic topology and homological algebra. A number of problems in complex geometry, symplectic geometry, and algebraic topology can be stated in terms of Massey products. One of such problems is to establish formality of smooth manifolds in rational homotopy theory. There have already been constructed a few classes of spaces with nontrivial triple Massey products in cohomology. Until now, very few examples of manifolds $M$ with nontrivial higher Massey products in $H^*(M)$ were known. In this wor…
We show that the existence of a nontrivial Massey product in the cohomology ring H^*(X) imposes global constraints upon the Riemannian geometry of a manifold X. Namely, we exhibit a suitable systolic inequality, associated to such a product. This generalizes an inequality proved in collaboration with Y. Rudyak, in the case when X has unit Betti numbers, and realizes the next step in M. Gromov's program for obtaining geometric inequalities associated with nontrivial Massey products. The inequality is a volume lower bound, and depends on the metric via a suitable isoperimetric quotient. The proo…
Let X be a finite CW-complex, denote its fundamental group by G. Let R be an n-dimensional complex repesentation of G. Any element A of the first cohomology group of X with complex coefficients gives rise to the exponential deformation of the representation R, which can be considered as a curve in the space of representations. We show that the cohomology of X with local coefficients corresponding to the generic point of this curve is computable from a spectral sequence starting from the cohomology of X with R-twisted coefficients. We compute the differentials of the spectral sequence in terms …
In this survey, we discuss two research areas related to Massey's higher operations. The first direction is connected with the cohomology of Lie algebras and the theory of representations. The second main theme is at the intersection of toric topology, homotopy theory of polyhedral products, and the homology theory of local rings, Stanley-Reisner rings of simplicial complexes.
We define a generalization of Massey products for algebras over a Koszul operad in characteristic zero, extending Massey's and Allday's and Retah's in the associative and Lie cases, respectively. We establish connections with minimal models and with Dimitrova's universal operadic cohomology class. We compute a Gerstenhaber algebra example and a hypercommutative algebra example related to the Chevalley-Eilenberg complex of the Heisenberg Lie algebra.
As part of various obstruction theories, non-trivial Massey products have been studied in symplectic and complex geometry, commutative algebra and topology for a long time. We introduce a general approach to constructing non-trivial Massey products in the cohomology of moment-angle complexes, using homotopy theoretical and combinatorial methods. Our approach sets a unifying way of constructing higher Massey products of arbitrary cohomological classes and generalises all existing examples of non-trivial Massey products in moment-angle complexes. As a result, we obtain explicit constructions of …
Let $ϕ: M\to M$ be a diffeomorphism of a $C^\infty$ compact connected manifold, and $X$ its mapping torus. There is a natural fibration $p:X\to S^1$, denote by $ξ\in H^1(X, \mathbb{Z})$ the corresponding cohomology class. Let $λ\in \mathbb{Z}^*$. Consider the endomorphism $ϕ_k^*$ induced by $ϕ$ in the cohomology of $M$ of degree $k$, and denote by $J_k(λ)$ the maximal size of its Jordan block of eigenvalue $λ$. Define a representation $ρ_λ: π_1(X)\to\mathbb{C}^*$ by $ρ_λ(g) = λ^{p_*(g)}.$ Let $H^*(X,ρ_λ)$ be the corresponding twisted cohomology of $X$. We prove that $J_k(λ)$ is equal to the ma…
In this paper we introduce a direct family of simple polytopes $P^{0}\subset P^{1}\subset\ldots$ such that for any $k$, $2\leq k\leq n$ there are non-trivial strictly defined Massey products of order $k$ in the cohomology rings of their moment-angle manifolds $\mathcal Z_{P^n}$. We prove that the direct sequence of manifolds $\ast\subset S^{3}\hookrightarrow\ldots\hookrightarrow\mathcal Z_{P^n}\hookrightarrow\mathcal Z_{P^{n+1}}\hookrightarrow\ldots$ has the following properties: every manifold $\mathcal Z_{P^n}$ is a retract of $\mathcal Z_{P^{n+1}}$, and one has inverse sequences in cohomolo…
Associated to every finite simplicial complex K there is a "moment-angle" finite CW-complex, Z_K; if K is a triangulation of a sphere, Z_K is a smooth, compact manifold. Building on work of Buchstaber, Panov, and Baskakov, we study the cohomology ring, the homotopy groups, and the triple Massey products of a moment-angle complex, relating these topological invariants to the algebraic combinatorics of the underlying simplicial complex. Applications to the study of non-formal manifolds and subspace arrangements are given.
We give a correct statement and a complete proof of the criterion obtained by Grbić, Panov, Theriault and Wu for the face ring $\Bbbk[K]$ of a simplicial complex $K$ to be Golod over a field $\Bbbk$. (The original argument depended on the main result of a paper by Berglund and Jöllenbeck, which was shown to be false by Katthän.) We also construct an example of a minimally non-Golod complex $K$ such that the cohomology of the corresponding moment-angle complex $\mathcal Z_K$ has trivial cup product and a non-trivial triple Massey product.
Closed (and simply-connected) manifolds whose dimensions are larger than 4 are central geometric objects in classical algebraic topology and differential topology. They have been classified via algebraic and abstract objects. On the other hand, It is difficult to understand them in geometric and constructive ways. In the present paper, we show such studies via explicit fold maps, higher dimensional versions of Morse functions. The author captured information of the topologies and the differentiable structures of closed (and simply-connected) manifolds which are not so complicated with respect …
We construct a family of manifolds, one for each $n\geq 2$, having a nontrivial Massey $n$-product in their cohomology. These manifolds turn out to be smooth closed 2-connected manifolds with a compact torus action called moment-angle manifolds $\mathcal Z_P$, whose orbit spaces are simple $n$-dimensional polytopes $P$ obtained from a $n$-cube by a sequence of truncations of faces of codimension 2 only (2-truncated cubes). Moreover, the polytopes $P$ are flag nestohedra but not graph-associahedra. We compute some bigraded Betti numbers $β^{-i,2(i+1)}(Q)$ for an associahedron $Q$ in terms of it…
This paper is a greatly expanded version of Section 9.11 in arXiv:1006.4343. A series of definitions and results illustrating the thesis in the title (where quasi-formality means vanishing of a certain kind of Massey multiplications in the cohomology) is presented. In particular, we include a categorical interpretation of the "Koszulity implies $K(π,1)$" claim, discuss the differences between two versions of Massey operations, and apply the derived nonhomogeneous Koszul duality theory in order to deduce the main theorem. In the end we demonstrate a counterexample providing a negative answer to…
In this paper it is shown that the RO(Z/2)-graded cohomology of a certain class of Rep(Z/2)-complexes, which includes projective spaces and Grassmann manifolds, is always free as a module over the cohomology of a point when the coefficient Mackey functor is \underline{Z/2}.
In this paper, we calculate the $RO(G)$-graded coefficients of $H\underline{\mathbb{Z}}$, the Eilenberg-MacLane spectrum of constant Mackey functor for quaternion group $Q_8$.
Let pi be a pro-l completion of a free group, and let G be a profinite group acting continuously on pi. First suppose the action is given by a character. Then the boundary maps delta_n: H^1(G, pi/[pi]_n) -> H^2(G, [pi]_n/[pi]_{n+1}) are Massey products. When the action is more general, we partially compute these boundary maps. Via obstructions of Jordan Ellenberg, this implies that pi_1 sections of P^1_k-{0,1,infty} satisfy the condition that associated nth order Massey products in Galois cohomology vanish. For the pi_1 sections coming from rational points, these conditions imply that < (1-x)^…
The tautness for a cohomology theory is formulated and studied by various authors. However, the analogous property is not considered for a homology theory. In this paper, we will define and study this very property for the Massey homology theory. Moreover, we will prove that the Kolmogoroff and the Massey homologies are isomorphic on the category of locally compact, paracompact spaces and proper maps. Therefore, we will obtain the same result for the Kolmogoroff homology theory.
Let $ρ:π_1(X)\to GL(n,\mathbb{C})$ be a representation, denote by $H^*(X,ρ)$ the corresponding twisted cohomology of $X$. Denote by $ρ_0$ the restriction of $ρ$ to $π_1(M)$, and by $ρ^*_0$ the antirepresentation conjugate to $ρ_0$. We construct from these data an automorphism of the group $H_*(M,ρ^*_0)$, that we call the twisted monodromy homomorphism $ϕ_*$. The aim of the pr…
In this paper, we calculate $RO(C_2)$-graded cohomology of $C_2$-equivariant Eilenberg-Mac Lane spaces $K(\underline{Z/2}, n+σ)$ for $n\geq 0$. These can be used to give the relation between equivariant lambda algebra and equivariant Adams resolution and equivariant unstable Adams spectral sequence, which are defined in author`s dissertation.
We provide two criteria for discarding the formality of a differential graded Lie algebra in terms of higher Whitehead brackets, which are the Lie analogue of the Massey products of a differential graded associative algebra. We also show that formality of a differential graded Lie algebra is not equivalent to the collapse of the Quillen spectral sequence. Finally, we use $L_\infty$ algebras and Quillen's formulation of rational homotopy theory to recover and improve a classical theorem for detecting higher Whitehead products in Sullivan minimal models and give some applications.
A surface with an involution can be viewed as a $C_2$-space where $C_2$ is the cyclic group of order two. Using the classification of $C_2$-surfaces given by Dugger, we compute the $RO(C_2)$-graded Bredon cohomology of all $C_2$-surfaces in constant $\mathbb{Z}/2$ coefficients as modules over the cohomology of a point. We show the cohomology depends only on three numerical invariants in the nonfree case, and only on two numerical invariants in the free case.
We completely calculate the $RO(G)$-graded coefficients of ordinary equivariant cohomology where $G$ is the dihedral group of order $2p$ for a prime $p>2$ both with constant and Burnside ring coefficients. The authors first proved it for $p=3$ and then the second author generalized it to arbitrary $p$. These are the first such calculations for a non-abelian group.
We show that for any face $F$ of a simple polytope $P$ the canonical equivariant homeomorphisms $h_P:\,\mathcal Z_P\to\mathcal Z_{K_P}$ and $h_F:\,\mathcal Z_F\to\mathcal Z_{K_F}$ are linked in a pentagonal commutative diagram with the maps of moment-angle manifolds and moment-angle-complexes, induced by a face embedding $i_{F,P}:\,F\to P$ and a simplicial embedding $Φ_{F,P}:\,K_F\to K_{F,P}\to K_P$, where $K_{F,P}$ is the full subcomplex of $K_P$ on the same vertex set as $Φ_{F,P}(K_F)$. We introduce the explicit constructions of the maps $i_{F,P}$, $Φ_{F,P}$ and show that a polytope $P$ is f…
Let $C_2$ denote the cyclic group of order two. Given a manifold with a $C_2$-action, we can consider its equivariant Bredon $RO(C_2)$-graded cohomology. In this paper, we develop a theory of fundamental classes for equivariant submanifolds in $RO(C_2)$-graded cohomology in constant $\mathbb{Z}/2$ coefficients. We show the cohomology of any $C_2$-surface is generated by fundamental classes, and these classes can be used to easily compute the ring structure. To define fundamental classes we are led to study the cohomology of Thom spaces of equivariant vector bundles. In general the cohomology o…
Let $C_2$ be the cyclic group of order two. We present a structure theorem for the $RO(C_2)$-graded Bredon cohomology of $C_2$-spaces using coefficients in the constant Mackey functor $\underline{\mathbb{F}_2}.$ We show that, as a module over the cohomology of the point, the $RO(C_2)$-graded cohomology of a finite $C_2$-CW complex decomposes as a direct sum of two basic pieces: shifted copies of the cohomology of a point and shifted copies of the cohomologies of spheres with the antipodal action. The shifts are by elements of $RO(C_2)$ corresponding to actual (i.e. non-virtual) $C_2$-represent…
In this paper the Serre spectral sequence of Moerdijk and Svensson is extended from Bredon cohomology to RO(G)-graded cohomology for finite groups G. Special attention is paid to the case G=Z/2 where the spectral sequence is used to compute the cohomology of certain projective bundles and loop spaces.
The purpose of this paper is to examine the calculational consequences of the duality for BPR<n> proved by the first author and Meier in 1607.02332, making them explicit in the special case n=3. We give an explicit description of the behaviour of the spectral sequence, with pictures.
Let L_1 denotes the Lie algebra of formal vector fields on the line which vanish at the origin together with their first derivatives. Buchstaber and Shokurov have shown that the universal enveloping algebra U(L_1) is isomorphic to the tensor product of the Landweber-Novikov algebra S in complex cobordism theory by reals. The cohomology H*(L_1) has trivial multiplication. Buchstaber conjectured that H*(L_1) is generated with respect to non-trivial Massey products by H^1(L_1). Feigin, Fuchs and Retakh found representation of H*(L_1) by trivial Massey products. In the present article we prove tha…
This thesis consists of two main parts. In the second part, we recall how a description of local coefficients that Eilenberg introduced in the 1940s leads to spectral sequences for the computation of homology and cohomology with local coefficients. We then show how to construct new equivariant analogues of these spectral sequences for RO(G)-graded Bredon homology and cohomology. Finally, we use these spectral sequences to complete a sample calculation, in which we use the equivariant Serre spectral sequence and the equivariant cohomology of complex projective spaces to compute the cohomology o…
We develop a local cohomology theory for FI$^m$-modules, and show that it in many ways mimics the classical theory for multi-graded modules over a polynomial ring. In particular, we define an invariant of FI$^m$-modules using this local cohomology theory which closely resembles an invariant of multi-graded modules over Cox rings defined by Maclagan and Smith. It is then shown that this invariant behaves almost identically to the invariant of Maclagan and Smith.
