We show that, in general, there exist non-vanishing triple Massey products in the cohomology with finite field coefficients of a complex hypersurface complement. In contrast, the Massey products, triple and higher, in the rational cohomology of such a space are all known to vanish.
We study the equivalence between infinitesimal Torelli theorem for smooth hypersurfaces in rational homogeneous varieties with Picard number one and the theory of generalized Massey products. This equivalence shows that the differential of the period map vanishes on an infinitesimal deformation if and only if certain twisted differential forms are elements of the Jacobian ideal of the hypersurface. We also prove an infinitesimal Torelli theorem result for smooth hypersurfaces in log parallelizable varieties.
Under the generic situation, the cohomology with the coefficients in the local system on complements of hypersurfaces vanishes except in the highest dimension. Our problem is of when the local system cohomology does not vanish. In the case of arrangements of hyperplanes, many examples were founded. In this paper, we shall generalize their examples to hypersurfaces. We obtain that hypersurfaces given by some linear system have non-vanishing local system cohomologies.
We describe a new relation between the topology of hypersurface complements, Milnor fibers and degree of gradient mappings. The main tools are polar curves and the affine Lefschetz theory developped by H. Hamm and A. Némethi. In the special case of the hyperplane arrangements, we strengthen some results due to Orlik and Terao (see Math. Ann. 301(1995)) and obtain an independant proof for the minimality of hyperplane arrangements (see Randell math.AT/0011101 for another proof of this result).
Let $V$ be a degree $d$, reduced hypersurface in $\mathbb{CP}^{n+1}$, $n \geq 1$, and fix a generic hyperplane, $H$. Denote by $\mathcal{U}$ the (affine) hypersurface complement, $\mathbb{CP}^{n+1}- V \cup H$, and let $\mathcal{U}^c$ be the infinite cyclic covering of $\mathcal{U}$ corresponding to the kernel of the linking number homomorphism. Using intersection homology theory, we give a new construction of the Alexander modules $H_i(\mathcal{U}^c;\mathbb{Q})$ of the hypersurface complement and show that, if $i \leq n$, these are torsion over the ring of rational Laurent polynomials. We also…
In \cite{DJL07} it was shown that if $\scra$ is an affine hyperplane arrangement in $\C^n$, then at most one of the $L^2$--Betti numbers $b_i^{(2)}(\C^n\sm \scra,\id)$ is non--zero. In this note we prove an analogous statement for complements of complex affine hyperurfaces in general position at infinity. Furthermore, we recast and extend to this higher-dimensional setting results of \cite{FLM,LM06} about $L^2$--Betti numbers of plane curve complements.
We start with a discussion on Alexander invariants, and then prove some general results concerning the divisibility of the Alexander polynomials and the supports of the Alexander modules, via Artin's vanishing theorem for perverse sheaves. We conclude with explicit computations of twisted cohomology following an idea already exploited in the hyperplane arrangement case, which combines the degeneration of the Hodge to de Rham spectral sequence to the purity of some cohomology groups.
We describe a new relation between the topology of hypersurface complements, Milnor fibers and degree of gradient mappings. In particular we show that any projective hypersurface has affine parts which are bouquets of spheres. The main tools are the polar curves and the affine Lefschetz theory developped by H. Hamm, D.T. Lê and A. Némethi. In the special case of the hyperplane arrangements, we strengthen some results due to Orlik and Terao (see Math. Ann. 301(1995)) and obtain the minimality of hyperplane arrangements (see Randell math.AT/0011101 for another proof of this result). This is then…
Let X be a finite CW-complex, denote its fundamental group by G. Let R be an n-dimensional complex repesentation of G. Any element A of the first cohomology group of X with complex coefficients gives rise to the exponential deformation of the representation R, which can be considered as a curve in the space of representations. We show that the cohomology of X with local coefficients corresponding to the generic point of this curve is computable from a spectral sequence starting from the cohomology of X with R-twisted coefficients. We compute the differentials of the spectral sequence in terms …
We show that quasi-projective Bestvina-Brady groups are fundamental groups of complements to hyperplane arrangements. Furthermore we relate other normal subgroups of right-angled Artin groups to complements to arrangements of hypersurfaces. We thus obtain examples of hypersurface complements whose fundamental groups satisfy various finiteness properties.
We consider the topology for a class of hypersurfaces with highly nonisolated singularites which arise as exceptional orbit varieties of a special class of prehomogeneous vector spaces, which are representations of linear algebraic groups with open orbits. These hypersurface singularities include both determinantal hypersurfaces and linear free (and free*) divisors. Although these hypersurfaces have highly nonisolated singularities, we determine the topology of their Milnor fibers, complements and links. We do so by using the action of linear algebraic groups beginning with the complement, ins…
Lê numbers were introduced by Massey with the purpose of numerically controlling the topological properties of families of non-isolated hypersurface singularities and describing the topology associated with a function with non-isolated singularities. They are a generalization of the Milnor number for isolated hypersurface singularities. In this note the authors investigate the composite of an arbitrary square-free f and $z^2$. They get a formula for the Lê numbers of the composite, and consider two applications of these numbers. The first application is concerned with the extent to which the L…
We investigate the complex analytic structure of the complement of a non-singular hypersurface with unitary flat normal bundle when the corresponding line bundle admits a Hermitian metric with semipositive curvature.
We study the complement problem in projective spaces $\mathbb{P}^n$ over any algebraically closed field: If $H, H' \subseteq \mathbb{P}^n$ are irreducible hypersurfaces of degree $d$ such that the complements $\mathbb{P}^n \setminus H$, $\mathbb{P}^n \setminus H'$ are isomorphic, are the hypersurfaces $H$, $H'$ isomorphic? For $n = 2$, the answer is positive if $d\leq 7$ and there are counterexamples when $d = 8$. In contrast we provide counterexamples for all $n, d \geq 3$ with $(n, d) \neq (3, 3)$. Moreover, we show that the complement problem has an affirmative answer for $d = 2$ and give p…
We define twisted Alexander polynomials of a complex hypersurface with arbitrary singularities. These generalize the classical Alexander polynomials of high dimensional hypersurfaces and the twisted Alexander polynomial of plane curves. We recover the classical torsionness and divisibility results, which say that, under certain assumptions, the twisted Alexander modules of a complex hypersurface are torsion modules, and that their orders, the twisted Alexander polynomials, divide the product of certain `local polynomials' defined in terms of the topology near singularities.
We study the topology of the boundary manifold of a regular neighborhood of a complex projective hypersurface. We show that, under certain Hodge theoretic conditions, the cohomology ring of the complement of the hypersurface functorially determines that of the boundary. When the hypersurface defines a hyperplane arrangement, the cohomology of the boundary is completely determined by the combinatorics of the underlying arrangement and the ambient dimension. We also study the LS category and topological complexity of the boundary manifold, as well as the resonance varieties of its cohomology rin…
We study the space of loops into a hypersurface complement, and show that the corresponding topological algebra of Laurent series with coefficients in $\mathcal{O}(L\mathbf{A}^{d}_{f})$ is a topological localisation of $\mathcal{O}(L\mathbf{A}^{d})$. This requires introducing a small amount of non-Archimedean functional analysis. In particular we work with topological algebras whose topology is generated by a family of sub-multiplicative, non-Archimedean semi-norms.
We prove the minimality of the CW-complex structure for complements of hyperplane arrangements in $\mathbb C^n$ by using the theory of Lefschetz pencils and results on the variation maps within a pencil of hyperplanes. This also provides a method to compute the Betti numbers of complements of arrangements via global polar invariants.
We consider an arbitrary polynomial map $f:{\mathbb C}^{n+1}\to {\mathbb C} $ and we study the Alexander invariants of ${\mathbb C}^{n+1}\setminus X$ for any fiber $X$ of $f$. The article has two major messages. First, the most important qualitative properties of the Alexander modules are completely independent of the behaviour of $f$ at infinity, or about the special fibers. Second, all the Alexander invariants of all the fibers of the polynomial $f$ are closely related to the monodromy representation of $f$. In fact, all the torsion parts of the Alexander modules (associated with all the pos…
We develop a model for the cohomology of the complement of a hypersurface arrangement inside a smooth projective complex variety. This generalizes the case of normal crossing divisors, discovered by P. Deligne in the context of the mixed Hodge theory of smooth complex varieties. Our model is a global version of the Orlik-Solomon algebra, which computes the cohomology of the complement of a union of hyperplanes in an affine space. The main tool is the complex of logarithmic forms along a hypersurface arrangement, and its weight filtration. Connections with wonderful compactifications and the co…
We prove that every biregular automorphism of the affine algebraic variety ${\mathbb P}^M\setminus S$, $M\geqslant 3$, where $S\subset {\mathbb P}^M$ is a hypersurface of degree $m\geqslant M+1$ with a unique singular point of multiplicity $(m-1)$, resolved by one blow up, is a restriction of some automorphism of the projective space ${\mathbb P}^M$, preserving the hypersurface $S$; in particular, for a general hypersurface $S$ the group $\mathop{\rm Aut} ({\mathbb P}^M\setminus S)$ is trivial.
In this paper the codimension of the complement to the set of factorial hypersurfaces of degree $d$ in ${\mathbb P}^N$ is estimated for $d\geqslant 4$, $N\geqslant 7$.
The homotopy group $π_{n-k} ({\bf C}^{n+1}-V)$ where $V$ is a hypersurface with a singular locus of dimension $k$ and good behavior at infinity is described using generic pencils. This is analogous to the van Kampen procedure for finding a fundamental group of a plane curve. In addition we use a certain representation generalizing the Burau representation of the braid group. A divisibility theorem is proven that shows the dependence of this homotopy group on the local type of singularities and behavior at infinity. Examples are given showing that this group depends on certain global data in ad…
In this paper, we prove that in any projective manifold, the complements of general hypersurfaces of sufficiently large degree are Kobayashi hyperbolic. We also provide an effective lower bound on the degree. This confirms a conjecture by S. Kobayashi in 1970. Our proof, based on the theory of jet differentials, is obtained by reducing the problem to the construction of a particular example with strong hyperbolicity properties. This approach relies the construction of higher order logarithmic connections allowing us to construct logarithmic Wronskians. These logarithmic Wronskians are the buil…
We provide explicit counterexamples to the so-called Complement Problem in every dimension $n\geq3$, i.e. pairs of non-isomorphic irreducible hypersurfaces $H_1, H_2\subset\mathbb{C}^{n}$ whose complements $\mathbb{C}^{n}\setminus H_1$ and $\mathbb{C}^{n}\setminus H_2$ are isomorphic. Since we can arrange that one of the hypersurfaces is singular whereas the other is smooth, we also have counterexamples in the analytic setting.
We investigate the complement of the discriminant in the projective space PSym^d C^{n+1} of polynomials defining hypersurfaces of degree d in P^n. Following the ideas of Zariski we are able to give a presentation for the fundamental group of the discriminant complement which generalises the well-known presentation in case n=1, i.e. of the spherical braid group on d strands. In particular our argument proceeds by a geometric analysis of the discriminant polynomial as proposed by Bessis and draws on results and methods from previous work of the author addressing a comparable problem for any vers…

In this work, it is established that for a generic projective hypersurface $H\subset\mathbb{P}^n(\mathbb{C})$ of degree $d\geq(5n)^2\,n^{n}$, any holomorphic entire curve $f\colon\mathbb{C}\to\mathbb{P}^n(\mathbb{C})\setminus H$ has its image contained in a proper algebraic subvariety $Z\subsetneq\mathbb{P}^{n}(\mathbb{C})$, that does not depend on the curve $f$. Here generic means that the coefficients of the defining equation of $H$ have to lie outside of a proper algebraic subvariety of the projective space of coefficients of homogeneous polynomials of degree $d$ (that parametrizes the alge…
This is an introduction to topology of complement to plane curves and hypersurfaces in the projective space and is based on the lectures given in Lumini in February and in ICTP (Trieste) in August of 2005. We discuss key problems concerning the families of singular curves, the one variable Alexander polynomials and the module over ring of Laurent polynomials structure on the homotopy groups of the complements to hypersurfaces with isolated singularities. We also discuss multivariable generalizations of these invariants and the Hodge theory of infinite abelian covers used in calculations of mul…
We prove that for any germ of complex analytic set in $\CC^n$ there exists a hypersurface singularity whose Milnor fibration has trivial geometric monodromy and fibre homotopic to the complement of the germ of complex analytic set. As an application we show an example of a quasi-homogeneous hypersurface singularity, with trivial geometric monodromy and simply connected and non-formal Milnor fibre.
The main purpose of this paper is to show that the mixed Hodge polynomial of the ``space of equations'' for smooth complete intersections of given multidegree in $\mathbb{C} P^n$ is divisible by the mixed Hodge polynomial of the group $\mathrm{GL}_{n+1}(\mathbb{C})$, the quotient being the mixed Hodge polynomial of the corresponding quotient space. As a by-product of the method used in the proof, we obtain expressions divisible by the order the automorphism group of any smooth projective hypersurface of given dimension and degree
Given a hypersurface coamoeba of a Laurent polynomial f, it is an open problem to describe the structure of its set of connected complement components. In this paper we approach this problem by introducing the lopsided coamoeba. We show that the closed lopsided coamoeba comes naturally equipped with an order map, i.e. a map v from its set of connected complement components to a translated lattice inside the zonotope of a Gale dual of the point configuration supp(f). Under a natural assumption, the map v is a bijection. Finally we use this map to obtain new results concerning coamoebas of polyn…
In this note we show that there are algebraic families of hyperbolic, Fermat-Waring type hypersurfaces in P^n of degree 4(n-1)^2, for all dimensions n>1. Moreover, there are hyperbolic Fermat-Waring hypersurfaces in P^n of degree 4n^2-2n+1 possessing complete hyperbolic, hyperbolically embedded complements.
The purpose of this paper is to show that, under certain combinatorial conditions on the graph, parametric Feynman integrals can be realized as periods on the complement of the determinant hypersurface in an affine space depending on the number of loops of the Feynman graph. The question of whether the Feynman integrals are periods of mixed Tate motives can then be reformulated (modulo divergences) as a question on a relative cohomology being a realization of a mixed Tate motive. This is the cohomology of the pair of the determinant hypersurface complement and a normal crossings divisor depend…
It is known that there is at least an invariant analytic curve passing through each of the components in the complement of nodal singularities, after the reduction of singularities of a germ of singular foliation in ${\mathbb C}^2,0$}. Here, we state and prove a generalization of this property to any ambient dimension.
We show the existence of a complex K3 surface $X$ which is not a Kummer surface and has a one-parameter family of Levi-flat hypersurfaces in which all the leaves are dense. We construct such $X$ by patching two open complex surfaces obtained as the complements of tubular neighborhoods of elliptic curves embedded in blow-ups of the projective planes at general nine points.
We introduce and study the vanishing homology of singular projective hypersurfaces. We prove its concentration in two levels in case of 1-dimensional singular locus $Σ$, and moreover determine the ranks of the nontrivial homology groups. These two groups depend on the monodromy at special points of $Σ$ and on the effect of the monodromy of the local system over its complement.
We describe a multivariable polynomial invariant for certain class of non isolated hypersurface singularities generalizing the characteristic polynomial on monodromy. The starting point is an extension of a theorem due to Le Dung Trang and K.Saito on commutativity of the local fundamental groups of certain hypersurfaces. The description of multivariable polynomial invariants is given in terms of the ideals and polytopes of quasiadjunction generalizing corresponding data used in the study of the homotopy groups of the complements to projective hypersurfaces and Alexander invariants of plane red…
In this article we prove that every entire curve in the complement of a generic hypersurface of degree $d\geq 586$ in $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbb{C}}^{3}$ is algebraically degenerate i.e there exists a proper subvariety which contains the entire curve.
Let Y be a hypersurface in projective space having only ordinary double points as singularities. We prove a variant of a conjecture of L. Wotzlaw on an algebraic description of the graded quotients of the Hodge filtration on the top cohomology of the complement of Y except for certain degrees of the graded quotients, as well as its extension to the Milnor cohomology of a defining polynomial of Y for degrees a little bit lower than the middle. These partially generalize theorems of Griffiths and Steenbrink in the Y smooth case, and enable us to determine the structure of the pole order spectral…
The main goal of this work is to prove that every entire curve in a smooth hypersurface of degree greater than or equal to 97 in the complex projective space of dimension 4 must satisfy an algebraic differential equation of order 3. A logarithmic version of this result is given proving that every entire curve in the complement of a smooth surface of degree greater than or equal to 92 in the complex projective space of dimension 3 must satisfy an algebraic differential equation of order 3.
We show that the complement of a degree $d$ hypersurface in a projective complete intersection, whose defining equations have degrees strictly larger than $d$, has a rational connectivity higher than expected. The key new feature is that a positivity result replaces the usual transversality conditions needed to get such connectivity results.
We obtain sufficient conditions for the vanishing of higher homotopy groups of the complements to hypersurfaces in ${\mathbb C}^n$ in terms of the behavior at infinity and relate the monodromy of non isolated singularities to the position of singularities in generic plane sections.
Given a projective or compact Kähler manifold X and a (smooth) hypersurface Y, we study conditions under which $X \setminus Y$ could be Stein. We apply this in particular to the case when X is the projectivization of the so-called canonical extension of the tangent bundle $T_M$ of a projective manifold M with Y being the projectivization of $T_M$ itself.
In this note we extend some of the results of a previous paper \url{arXiv:math/0511593} to algebraically closed fields of finite characteristic. In particular, we show that there is an explicit expression in $n$ and $d$ which is divisible by the prime to $p$ part of the order of the the automorphism group of a smooth degree $d$ hypersurface $\subset \mathbb{P}^n_k$ for $k$ an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p$.
In 1933, van Kampen described the fundamental groups of the complements of plane complex projective algebraic curves. Recently, Chéniot-Libgober proved an analogue of this result for higher homotopy groups of the complements of complex projective hypersurfaces with isolated singularities. Their description is in terms of some "homotopical variation operators". We generalize here the notion of "homotopical variation" to (singular) quasi-projective varieties. This is a first step for further generalizations of van Kampen's theorem. A conjecture, with a first approach, is stated in the special ca…
This paper generalizes classical results of Griffiths, Dolgachev and Steenbrink on the cohomology of hypersurfaces in weighted projective spaces. Given a $d$-dimensional projective simplicial toric variety $P$ and an ample hypersurface $X$ defined by an polynomial $f$ in the homogeneous coordinate ring $S$ of $P$ (as defined in an earlier paper of the first author), we show that the graded pieces of the Hodge filtration on $H^d(P - X)$ are naturally isomorphic to certain graded pieces of $S/J(f)$, where $J(f)$ is the Jacobian ideal of $f$. We then discuss how this relates to the primitive coho…
We show that the kernel of the monodromy representation for hypersurfaces of degree d and dimension n is large for d at least three with the exception of the cases (d,n) = (3,0) and (3,1). For these the kernel is finite. By "large" we mean a group that admits a homomorphism to a semisimple Lie group of noncompact type with Zariski-dense image. By the Tits alternative a large group contains a free subgroup of rank two.
We present local classification results for isolated singularities of functions with respect to a Nambu structure (multi-vector field) of maximal degree, in a neighbourhood of a smooth point of its degeneracy hypersurface. The results depend on a logarithmic version of the Brieskorn-Sebastiani theorem, which guarantees the finiteness and freeness of the corresponding deformation module. This relates the functional moduli of the classification problem with the integrals of logarithmic forms along the vanishing cycles of the complement of the Milnor fibers of the restriction of the function on t…
Let $X=\C^n$. In this paper we present an algorithm that computes the de Rham cohomology groups $H^i_{dR}(U,\C)$ where $U$ is the complement of an arbitrary Zariski-closed set $Y$ in $X$. Our algorithm is a merger of the algorithm given by T.~Oaku and N.~Takayama (\cite{O-T2}), who considered the case where $Y$ is a hypersurface, and our methods from \cite{W-1} for the computation of local cohomology. We further extend the algorithm to compute de Rham cohomology groups with support $H^i_{dR,Z}(U,\C)$ where again $U$ is an arbitrary Zariski-open subset of $X$ and $Z$ is an arbitrary Zariski-clo…
We prove a vanishing theorem for the cohomology of the complement of a complex hyperplane arrangement with coefficients in a complex local system. This result is compared with other vanishing theorems, and used to study Milnor fibers of line arrangements, and hypersurface arrangements.
