This is an introduction to topology of complement to plane curves and hypersurfaces in the projective space and is based on the lectures given in Lumini in February and in ICTP (Trieste) in August of 2005. We discuss key problems concerning the families of singular curves, the one variable Alexander polynomials and the module over ring of Laurent polynomials structure on the homotopy groups of the complements to hypersurfaces with isolated singularities. We also discuss multivariable generalizations of these invariants and the Hodge theory of infinite abelian covers used in calculations of multivariable invariants. A historical overview is included as the opening section

Lectures on Geometry and Topology of Polynomials - Surrounding the Jacobian Conjecture

Recent developments of affine algebraic geometry, especially the theory of open algebraic surfaces, provide means to systematically explore geometric and topological properties of polynomials in two variables. Moment-angle manifolds and complexes. Lecture notes KAIST'2010

These are notes of the lectures given during the Toric Topology Workshop at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology in February 2010. Lectures on the Geometry and Modular Representation Theory of Algebraic Groups

These notes provide a concise introduction to the representation theory of reductive algebraic groups in positive characteristic, with an emphasis on Lusztig's character formula and geometric representation theory. Toric and tropical compactifications of hyperplane complements

These lecture notes are based on lectures given by the author at the summer school "Arrangements in Pyrénées" in June 2012. We survey and compare various compactifications of complex hyperplane arrangement complements. In particular, we review the Gel'fand-MacPherson construction, Kapranov's visible contours compactification, and De Concini and Procesi's wonderful compactification. We explain how these constructions are unified by some ideas from the modern origins of tropical geometry. The paper contains a few new arguments intended to make the presentation as self-contained as possible.

Low degree polynomial equations: arithmetic, geometry and topology

On the topology of the complements of reducible plane curves via Galois covers

Let ${\mathcal {B}}$ be a reducible reduced plane curve. We introduce a new point of view to study the topology of $(\PP^2, {\mathcal {B}})$ via Galois covers and Alexander polynomials. We show its effectiveness through examples of Zariski $N$-plets for conic and conic-quartic configurations.

Complements of discriminants of real boundary singularities

We study the topology of the complements of discriminants of simple real boundary singularities by counting the connected components of these sets and assigning to them certain topological characteristics. Results of this paper serve as a generalization of those recently acquired by Vassiliev arXiv:2109.12287 for ordinary function singularities.

Complements to ample divisors and Singularities

The paper reviews recent developments in the study of Alexander invariants of quasi-projective manifolds using methods of singularity theory. Several results in topology of the complements to singular plane curves and hypersurfaces in projective space extended to the case of curves on simply connected smooth projective surfaces.

Applications to A1-enumerative geometry of the A1-degree

These are lecture notes from the conference Arithmetic Topology at the Pacific Institute of Mathematical Sciences on applications of Morel's A1-degree to questions in enumerative geometry. Galois covers of graphs and embedded topology of plane curves

The splitting number is effective to distinguish the embedded topology of plane curves, and it is not determined by the fundamental group of the complement of the plane curve. In this paper, we give a generalization of the splitting number, called the splitting graph. By using the splitting graph, we classify the embedded topology of plane curves consisting of one smooth curve and non-concurrent three lines, called Artal arrangements.

Topology of Exceptional Orbit Hypersurfaces of Prehomogeneous Spaces

We consider the topology for a class of hypersurfaces with highly nonisolated singularites which arise as exceptional orbit varieties of a special class of prehomogeneous vector spaces, which are representations of linear algebraic groups with open orbits. These hypersurface singularities include both determinantal hypersurfaces and linear free (and free*) divisors. Non-Archimedean Fréchet Algebras and the Loop Space of a Hypersurface Complement

We study the space of loops into a hypersurface complement, and show that the corresponding topological algebra of Laurent series with coefficients in $\mathcal{O}(L\mathbf{A}^{d}_{f})$ is a topological localisation of $\mathcal{O}(L\mathbf{A}^{d})$. This requires introducing a small amount of non-Archimedean functional analysis. In particular we work with topological algebras whose topology is generated by a family of sub-multiplicative, non-Archimedean semi-norms.

Hypersurface complements, Milnor fibers and minimality of arrangements

We describe a new relation between the topology of hypersurface complements, Milnor fibers and degree of gradient mappings. The main tools are polar curves and the affine Lefschetz theory developped by H. Hamm and A. Némethi. In the special case of the hyperplane arrangements, we strengthen some results due to Orlik and Terao (see Math. Ann. 301(1995)) and obtain an independant proof for the minimality of hyperplane arrangements (see Randell math.AT/0011101 for another proof of this result).
