Let $X=\C^n$. In this paper we present an algorithm that computes the de Rham cohomology groups $H^i_{dR}(U,\C)$ where $U$ is the complement of an arbitrary Zariski-closed set $Y$ in $X$. Our algorithm is a merger of the algorithm given by T.~Oaku and N.~Takayama (\cite{O-T2}), who considered the case where $Y$ is a hypersurface, and our methods from \cite{W-1} for the computation of local cohomology. We further extend the algorithm to compute de Rham cohomology groups with support $H^i_{dR,Z}(U,\C)$ where again $U$ is an arbitrary Zariski-open subset of $X$ and $Z$ is an arbitrary Zariski-closed subset of $U$. Our main tool is the generalization of the restriction process from \cite{O-T1} to complexes of modules over the Weyl algebra. All presented algorithms are based on Gröbner basis computations in the Weyl algebra.
The SL(2,C)-representation varieties of punctured surfaces form natural families parameterized by holonomies at the punctures. In this paper, we first compute the loci where these varieties are singular for the cases of one-holed and two-holed tori and the four-holed sphere. We then compute the de Rham cohomologies of these varieties of the one-holed torus and the four-holed sphere when the varieties are smooth via the Grothendieck theorem. Furthermore, we produce the explicit Gauss-Manin connection on the natural family of the smooth SL(2,C)-representation variety of the one-holed torus.
In the 1960s, Dwork developed a p-adic cohomology theory of de Rham type for varieties over finite fields, based on a trace formula for the action of a Frobenius operator on certain spaces of p-adic analytic functions. One can consider a purely algebraic analogue of Dwork's theory for varieties over a field of characteristic zero and ask what is the connection between this theory and ordinary de Rham cohomology. N. Katz showed that Dwork cohomology coincides with the primitive part of de Rham cohomology for smooth projective hypersurfaces, but the exact relationship for varieties of higher cod…
We prove a Hodge-type decomposition for the de-Rham cohomology of $ p$-adically uniformized varieties by the product of Drinfeld's symmetric spaces. It is based on work of Schneider, Stuhler, Iovita and Spiess on the cohomology of Drinfeld's symmetric space.
Over any smooth algebraic variety over a $p$-adic local field $k$, we construct the de Rham comparison isomorphisms for the étale cohomology with partial compact support of de Rham $\mathbb Z_p$-local systems, and show that they are compatible with Poincaré duality and with the canonical morphisms among such cohomology. We deduce these results from their analogues for rigid analytic varieties that are Zariski open in some proper smooth rigid analytic varieties over $k$. In particular, we prove finiteness of étale cohomology with partial compact support of any $\mathbb Z_p$-local systems, and e…
We define an overconvergent version of the Hyodo-Kato complex for semistable varieties $Y$ over perfect fields of positive characteristic, and prove that its hypercohomology tensored with $\mathbb{Q}$ recovers the log-rigid cohomology when $Y$ is quasi-projective. We then describe the monodromy operator using the overconvergent Hyodo-Kato complex. Finally, we show that overconvergent Hyodo-Kato cohomology agrees with log-crystalline cohomology in the projective semistable case.
In his 1982 paper, Ogus defined a class of cycles in the de Rham cohomology of smooth proper varieties over number fields. This notion is a crystalline analogue of $\ell$-adic Tate cycles. In the case of abelian varieties, this class includes all the Hodge cycles by the work of Deligne, Ogus, and Blasius. Ogus predicted that such cycles coincide with Hodge cycles for abelian varieties. In this paper, we confirm Ogus' prediction for some families of abelian varieties. These families include abelian varieties that have both prime dimension and nontrivial endomorphism ring. The proof is based on …
We prove a conjecture of Etingof and the second author for hypertoric varieties, that the Poisson-de Rham homology of a unimodular hypertoric cone is isomorphic to the de Rham cohomology of its hypertoric resolution. More generally, we prove that this conjecture holds for an arbitrary conical variety admitting a symplectic resolution if and only if it holds in degree zero for all normal slices to symplectic leaves. The Poisson-de Rham homology of a Poisson cone inherits a second grading. In the hypertoric case, we compute the resulting 2-variable Poisson-de Rham-Poincare polynomial, and prove …
On an arbitrary toric variety, we introduce the logarithmic double complex, which is essentially the same as the algebraic de Rham complex in the nonsingular case, but which behaves much better in the singular case. Over the field of complex numbers, we prove the toric analog of the algebraic de Rham theorem which Grothendieck formulated and proved for general nonsingular algebraic varieties re-interpreting an earlier work of Hodge-Atiyah. Namely, for a finite simplicial fan which need not be complete, the complex cohomology groups of the corresponding toric variety as an analytic space coinci…
We describe a parallel polynomial time algorithm for computing the topological Betti numbers of a smooth complex projective variety $X$. It is the first single exponential time algorithm for computing the Betti numbers of a significant class of complex varieties of arbitrary dimension. Our main theoretical result is that the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the sheaf of differential $p$-forms on $X$ is bounded by $p(em+1)D$, where $e$, $m$, and $D$ are the maximal codimension, dimension, and degree, respectively, of all irreducible components of $X$. It follows that, for a union $V$ of generi…
The de Rham comparison theorem for varieties, first proved by Faltings, gives the de Rham cohomology of a variety in terms of its p-adic etale cohomology. We extend this theorem to proper, smooth Deligne-Mumford stacks. Two approaches are given, which both in the end reduce the problem to the already known comparison theorem for varieties. The first approach employs the formalism of Weil cohomologies. Unfortunately, this does not result in a complete proof of the comparison theorem, as the author was unable to prove the required compatibility between intersections and cup products. Nevertheles…
We introduce the categories of geometric mixed Hodge modules on algebraic varieties over a subfield $k\subset\mathbb C$, and for a prime number $p$, the categories of geometric $p$-adic mixed Hodge modules on algebraic varieties over a subfield $k\subset K\subset\mathbb C_p$ of a p-adic field $K$. We then give an Hodge realization functor on the de derived category of relative motives over $k\subset\mathbb C$, and for a prime number $p$ a $p$-adic Hodge realization functor on the derived category of relative motives over $k\subset K\subset\mathbb C_p$.
We prove that algebraic de Rham cohomology as a functor defined on smooth $\mathbb{F}_p$-algebras is formally étale in a precise sense. This result shows that given de Rham cohomology, one automatically obtains the theory of crystalline cohomology as its unique functorial deformation. To prove this, we define and study the notion of a pointed $\mathbb{G}_a^{\mathrm{perf}}$-module and its refinement which we call a quasi-ideal in $\mathbb{G}_a^{\mathrm{perf}}$ -- following Drinfeld's terminology. Our main constructions show that there is a way to "unwind" any pointed $\mathbb{G}_a^{\text{perf}}…
A theory of simultaneous resolution of singularities for families of embedded varieties (over a field of characteristic zero) parametrized by the spectrum of a suitable artinian ring, and compatible with a given algorithm of resolution, is presented. As usually, this a simple consequence of a similar theory for analogous families of basic objects, to which the main portion of this article is devoted.
The goal of this paper is to introduce a new constructive geometric proof of the affine version of Chevalley's Theorem. This proof is algorithmic and a verbatim implementation resulted in an efficient code for computing the constructible image of rational maps between affine varieties. Our approach extends the known descriptions of uniform matrix product states to $\operatorname{uMPS}(2,2,5)$
The goal of this paper is to offer a new construction of the de Rham-Witt complex of smooth varieties over perfect fields of characteristic $p>0$. We introduce a category of cochain complexes equipped with an endomorphism $F$ of underlying graded abelian groups satisfying $dF = pFd$, whose homological algebra we study in detail. To any such object satisfying an abstract analog of the Cartier isomorphism, an elementary homological process associates a generalization of the de Rham-Witt construction. Abstractly, the homological algebra can be viewed as a calculation of the fixed points of the Be…
We show that Illusie's derived de Rham cohomology (Hodge-completed) coincides with Hartshorne's algebraic de Rham cohomology for a finite type map of noetherian schemes in characteristic 0; the case of lci morphisms was a result of Illusie. In particular, the E_1-differentials in the derived Hodge-to-de Rham spectral sequence for singular varieties are often non-zero. Another consequence is a completely elementary description of Hartshorne's algebraic de Rham cohomology: it is computed by the completed Amitsur complex for any variety in characteristic 0.
We give algorithms for the computation of the algebraic de Rham cohomology of open and closed algebraic sets inside projective space or other smooth complex toric varieties. The methods, which are based on Gröbner basis computations in rings of differential operators, can also be used to compute the cohomology of intersections of smooth closed and open subsets, and in certain situations the cup-product structure. We give some examples which were carried out with the help of \Mtwo.
We compute the rational Borel-Moore homology groups for affine determinantal varieties in the spaces of general, symmetric, and skew-symmetric matrices, solving a problem suggested by the work of Pragacz and Ratajski. The main ingredient is the relation with Hartshorne's algebraic de Rham homology theory, and the calculation of the singular cohomology of matrix orbits, using the methods of Cartan and Borel. We also establish the degeneration of the Čech-de Rham spectral sequence for determinantal varieties, and compute explicitly the dimensions of de Rham cohomology groups of local cohomology …
We reproduce the quantum cohomology of toric varieties (and of some hypersurfaces in projective spaces) as the cohomology of certain vertex algebras with differential. The deformation technique allows us to compute the cohomology of the chiral de Rham complex over the projective space.
We study equivariant de Rham discriminants associated to arithmetic varieties which support a tame action by a finite group; we form these discriminants by endowing the de Rham cohomology with pairings arising from duality theory. Such equivariant discriminants are shown to break up naturally into a metric part and a signature part. In a previous paper we described the equivariant Arakelov discriminants, obtained by endowing the equivariant determinant of de Rham cohomology with various metrics. In this paper we study the associated equivariant signature information; in particular, we show tha…
We prove an effective bound for the degrees of generators of the algebraic de Rham cohomology of smooth affine hypersurfaces. In particular, we show that the de Rham cohomology H_dR^p(X) of a smooth hypersurface X of degree d in C^n can be generated by differential forms of degree d^O(pn). This result is relevant for the algorithmic computation of the cohomology, but is also motivated by questions in the theory of ordinary differential equations related to the infinitesimal Hilbert 16th problem.
We give proofs of de Rham comparison isomorphisms for rigid-analytic varieties, with coefficients and in families. This relies on the theory of perfectoid spaces. Another new ingredient is the pro-etale site, which makes all constructions completely functorial.
A classical result of A. Connes asserts that the Frechet algebra of smooth functions on a smooth compact manifold X provides, by a purely algebraic procedure, the de Rham cohomology of X. Namely the procedure uses Hochschild and cyclic homology of this algebra. In the situation of a Thom-Mather stratified variety, we construct a Frechet algebra of functions on the regular part and a module of poles along the singular part. We associate to these objects a complex of differential forms and an Hochschild complex, on the regular part, both with poles along the singular part. The de Rham cohomology…
We compute, in a stable range, the arithmetic p-adic etale cohomology of smooth rigid analytic and dagger varieties (without any assumption on the existence of a nice integral model) in terms of differential forms using syntomic methods. The main technical input is a construction of a Hyodo-Kato cohomology and a Hyodo-Kato isomorphism with de Rham cohomology.
In this paper we present algorithms that compute certain local cohomology modules associated to a ring of polynomials containing the rational numbers. In particular we are able to compute the local cohomological dimension of algebraic varieties in characteristic zero. Our approach is based on the theory of D-modules.
We show that for two afii varieties over an arbitrary field of characteristic zero, there is no general form of an algorithm for checking the presence of an embedding of one algebraic variety in another. Moreover, we establish this for affine varieties whose coordinate rings are given by generators and defining relations. Moreover, one of these varieties can be taken as an affine space, and in the case of a field of real numbers, an affine line.
This note discusses some examples showing that the crystalline cohomology of even very mildly singular projective varieties tends to be quite large. In particular, any singular projective variety with at worst ordinary double points has infinitely generated crystalline cohomology in at least two cohomological degrees. These calculations rely critically on comparisons between crystalline and derived de Rham cohomology.
Let $K$ be a finite extension of ${\mathbb Q}_p$ and let $X$ be Drinfel'd's symmetric space of dimension $d$ over $K$. Let $Γ\subset {\rm SL}_{d+1}(K)$ be a cocompact discrete (torsionfree) subgroup and let ${X}_Γ=Γ\backslash {X}$, a smooth projective ${K}$-variety. In this paper we investigate the de Rham and log crystalline (log convergent) cohomology of local systems on $X_Γ$ arising from $K[Γ]$-modules. (I) We prove the monodromy weight conjecture in this context. To do so we work out, for a general strictly semistable proper scheme of pure relative dimension $d$ over a cdvr of mixed chara…
We prove: if the (étale or de Rham) realization functor is conservative on the category $DM_{gm}$ of Voevodsky motives with rational coefficients then motivic zeta functions of arbitrary varieties are rational and numerical motives are Kimura-finite. The latter statement immediately implies that the category of numerical motives is (essentially) Tannakian. This observation becomes actual due to the recent announcement of J. Ayoub that the De Rham cohomology realization is conservative on $DM_{gm}(k)$ whenever $\operatorname{char} k=0$. We apply this statement to exterior powers of motives comi…
Grothendieck has proved that each class in the de Rham cohomology of a smooth complex affine variety can be represented by a differential form with polynomial coefficients. After having proved a single exponential bound for the degrees of these forms in the case of a hypersurface, here we generalize this result to arbitrary codimension. More precisely, we show that the p-th de Rham cohomology of a smooth affine variety of dimension m and degree D can be represented by differential forms of degree (pD)^{O(pm)}. This result is relevant for the algorithmic computation of the cohomology, but is al…
In this article, we study the De Rham cohomology of the first cover in the Lubin-Tate tower. In particular, we get a purely local proof that the supercuspidal part realizes the local Jacquet-Langlands correspondence for ${\rm GL}_n$ by comparing it to the rigid cohomology of some Deligne-Lusztig varieties. The representations obtained are analogous to the ones appearing in the $\ell$-adic cohomology if we forget the action of the Weil group. The proof relies on the generalization of an excision result of Grosse-Klönne and on the existence of a semi-stable model constructed by Yoshida for which…
Let $S_0$ be a smooth and compact real variety given by a reduced regular sequence of polynomials $f_1, ..., f_p$. This paper is devoted to the algorithmic problem of finding {\em efficiently} a representative point for each connected component of $S_0$ . For this purpose we exhibit explicit polynomial equations that describe the generic polar varieties of $S_0$. This leads to a procedure which solves our algorithmic problem in time that is polynomial in the (extrinsic) description length of the input equations $f_1, >..., f_p$ and in a suitably introduced, intrinsic geometric parameter, calle…
We present a semicontinuity result, proven in recent joint work with Morrow and Scholze, relating the mod $p$ singular cohomology of a smooth projective complex algebraic variety X to the de Rham cohomology of a smooth characteristic $p$ specialization of X: the rank of the former is bounded above by that of the latter. The path to this result passes through $p$-adic Hodge theory and perfectoid geometry, so we survey the relevant aspects of those subjects as well.
We extend the methods developed in our earlier work to algorithmically compute the intersection cohomology Betti numbers of reductive varieties. These form a class of highly symmetric varieties that includes equivariant compactifications of reductive groups. Thereby, we extend a well-known algorithm for toric varieties.
