Let $S_0$ be a smooth and compact real variety given by a reduced regular sequence of polynomials $f_1, ..., f_p$. This paper is devoted to the algorithmic problem of finding {\em efficiently} a representative point for each connected component of $S_0$ . For this purpose we exhibit explicit polynomial equations that describe the generic polar varieties of $S_0$. This leads to a procedure which solves our algorithmic problem in time that is polynomial in the (extrinsic) description length of the input equations $f_1, >..., f_p$ and in a suitably introduced, intrinsic geometric parameter, called the {\em degree} of the real interpretation of the given equation system $f_1, >..., f_p$.
Tropical algebraic geometry offers new tools for elimination theory and implicitization. We determine the tropicalization of the image of a subvariety of an algebraic torus under any homomorphism from that torus to another torus.
New formulas are given for Chow forms, discriminants and resultants arising from (not necessarily normal) toric varieties of codimension 2. Exact descriptions are also given for the secondary polygon and for the Newton polygon of the discriminant.
We study the classification problem for polarized varieties with high nefvalue. We give a complete list of isomorphism classes for normal polarized varieties with high nefvalue. This generalizes classical work on the smooth case by Fujita, Beltrametti and Sommese. As a consequence we obtain that polarized varieties with slc singularities and high nefvalue, are birationally equivalent to projective bundles over nodal curves.
We classify the polarized symplectic automorphisms of Fano varieties of smooth cubic fourfolds (equipped with the Plücker polarization) and study the fixed loci.
Given a natural number $l$ and a weak Fano $n$-fold $X$ with $\operatorname{dim}\overline{φ_{-lK_X}(X)}\geq n-1$, we study the lower bound of the anti-canonical volume and the upper bound of the anti-canonical stability index. The method can also be used to give similar bounds for polarised Calabi-Yau varieties.
We recall the definition of classical polar varieties, as well as those of affine and projective reciprocal polar varieties. The latter are defined with respect to a non-degenerate quadric, which gives us a notion of orthogonality. In particular we relate the reciprocal polar varieties to the "Euclidean geometry" in projective space. The Euclidean distance degree and the degree of the focal loci can be expressed in terms of the ranks, i.e., the degrees of the classical polar varieties, and hence these characters can be found also for singular varieties, when one can express the ranks in terms …
We have developed in the past several algorithms with intrinsic complexity bounds for the problem of point finding in real algebraic varieties. Our aim here is to give a comprehensive presentation of the geometrical tools which are necessary to prove the correctness and complexity estimates of these algorithms. Our results form also the geometrical main ingredients for the computational treatment of singular hypersurfaces. In particular, we show the non--emptiness of suitable generic dual polar varieties of (possibly singular) real varieties, show that generic polar varieties may become singul…
In this note we introduce higher order polar loci as natural generalizations of the classical polar loci, replacing the role of tangent spaces by that of higher order osculating spaces. The close connection between polar loci and dual varieties carries over to a connection between higher order polar loci and higher order dual varieties. We generalize the duality between the degrees of polar classes of a variety and those of its dual variety to varieties that are reflexive to a higher order. In particular, the degree of the top (highest codimension) polar class of order k is equal to the degree…
Let $\mathcal{A}_g$ denote the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension $g \ge 3.$ In this paper we prove the connectedness of the singular sublocus of $\mathcal{A}_g$ consisting of those abelian varieties which possess an involution different from $-id$.
We give an explicit characterization of all principally polarized abelian varieties $(A,Θ)$ such that there is a finite subgroup of automorphisms $G$ of $A$ that preserve the numerical class of $Θ$, and such that the quotient variety $A/G$ is smooth. We also give a complete classification of smooth quotients of Jacobians of curves.
Part I introduced diptych varieties $V_{ABLM}$ and gave a rigorous construction of them in the case $d,e\ge 2$ and $de>4$. Here we prove the existence of $V_{ABLM}$ in all the cases with $de\le4$. At the same time we construct some classes of interesting quasihomogeneous spaces for groups such as $\GL(2)\times\G_m^r$ based on the algebra of polars.
Motivated by the problem of determining the structure of integral points on subvarieties of semiabelian varieties defined over finite fields, we prove a quantifier elimination result for certain modules over finite simple extensions of the integers given together with predicates for orbits of the distinguished generator of the ring.
To any pair of coverings $f_i: X \ra X_i, i = 1,2$ of smooth projective curves one can associate an abelian subvariety of the Jacobian $J_X$, the Prym variety $P(f_1,f_2)$ of the pair $(f_1,f_2)$. In some cases we can compute the type of the restriction of the canonical principal polarization of $JX$. We obtain 2 families of Prym-Tyurin varieties of exponent 6.
Let $(X,D)$ be a smooth log pair over $\mathbb{C}$ such that the complement $U := X \setminus D$ carries a maximally varied family of polarized manifolds. We prove a version of second main theorem on $(X,D)$ by using the Viehweg-Zuo construction of the family and McQuillan's tautological inequality. As an application, we generalize a classical result of Nadel about the distribution of entire curves in the (compactified) base space of polarized families.
The Narasimhan-Nori conjecture asks for a closed formula for the number of non-isomorphic principal polarizations of any given abelian variety. In this paper, we introduce a new algorithm that gives a lower bound on the number of non-isomorphic principal polarizations on any given abelian variety. We show, for example, that the Jacobian of the genus four underlying curve of Schoen's I-WP minimal surface has at least 9 non-isomorphic principal polarizations. We also explore the Jacobians of Klein's quartic, Fermat's quartic, Bring's curve, and more.
The formula of expanding the Abel variety theta function restricted to Abel subvariety into theta functions of this subvariety is obtained. With the help of this formula the solution of differential equations with Jacobi theta functions, restricted on a nonprincipally polarized Abel subvariety and their translations are rewritten in terms of the theta functions of these subvarieties. This is exemplified by the CKP equations, the Bogoyavlenskij system, and the Toda $g_2^{(1)}$-chain.
Polar varieties have in recent years been used by Bank, Giusti, Heintz, Mbakop, and Pardo, and by Safey El Din and Schost, to find efficient procedures for determining points on all real components of a given non-singular algebraic variety. In this note we review the classical notion of polars and polar varieties, as well as the construction of what we here call reciprocal polar varieties. In particular we consider the case of real affine plane curves, and we give conditions for when the polar varieties of singular curves contain points on all real components.
Let $π: Z \ra X$ be a Galois covering of smooth projective curves with Galois group the Weyl group of a simple and simply-connected Lie group $G$. For any dominant weight $λ$ consider the curve $Y = Z/\Stab(λ)$. The Kanev correspondence defines an abelian subvariety $P_λ$ of the Jacobian of $Y$. We compute the type of the polarization of the restriction of the canonical principal polarization of $\Jac(Y)$ to $P_λ$ in some cases. In particular, in the case of the group $E_8$ we obtain families of Prym-Tyurin varieties. The main idea is the use of an abelianization map of the Donagi-Prym variety…
The Castelnuovo-Schottky theorem of Pareschi-Popa characterizes Jacobians, among indecomposable principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension g, by the existence of g+2 points in general position with respect to the principal polarization, but special with respect to twice the polarization, and furthermore states that such collections of points must be contained in an Abel-Jacobi curve. Building on the ideas in the original paper, we give here a self contained, scheme theoretic proof of the theorem, extending it to finite, possibly nonreduced subschemes.
Let p:C-->Y be a covering of smooth, projective curves which is a composition of π:C-->C' of degree 2 and g:C'-->Y of degree n. Let f:X-->Y be the covering of degree 2^n, where the curve X parametrizes the liftings in C^{(n)} of the fibers of g:C'-->Y. Let P(X,δ) be the associated Prym-Tyurin variety, known to be isogenous to the Prym variety P(C,C'). Most of the results in the paper focus on calculating the polarization type of the restriction of the canonical polarization of JX on P(X,δ). We obtain the polarization type when n=3. When Y=P^1 we conjecture that P(X,δ) is isomorphic to the dual…
In this paper, we study the K-stability of polarized spherical varieties. After reduction, it can be treated as a variational problem of the reduced functional of the Futaki invariant on the associated moment polytope. With the convexity constraint of the problem, the minimizers are shown to satisfy the homogeneous Monge-Ampère equation (HMA). When the spherical variety has rank two, a simpler characterization can be established through properties of the HMA. As an application, we determine the strict semistability and polystable degenerations for Fano spherical varieties of rank two.
Let ${\cal L} = (L, \| \cdot \|_v)$ be an ample metrized invertible sheaf on a smooth quasi-projective algebraic variety $V$ defined over a number field. Denote by $N(V,{\cal L},B)$ the number of rational points in $V$ having ${\cal L}$-height $\leq B$. We consider the problem of a geometric and arithmetic interpretation of the asymptotic for $N(V,{\cal L},B)$ as $B \to \infty$ in connection with recent conjectures of Fujita concerning the Minimal Model Program for polarized algebraic varieties. We introduce the notions of ${\cal L}$-primitive varieties and ${\cal L}$-primitive fibrations. For…
Let $X$ be a polarized abelian variety over a field $K$. Let $O$ be a ring with an involution that acts on $X$ and this action is compatible with the polarization. We prove that the natural action of $O$ on $(X \times X^t)^4$ is compatible with a certain principal polarization.
Let $X$ be a normal projective variety admitting a polarized or int-amplified endomorphism $f$. We list up characteristic properties of such an endomorphism and classify such a variety from the aspects of its singularity, anti-canonical divisor and Kodaira dimension. Then we run the equivariant minimal model program with respect to not just the single $f$ but also the monoid $SEnd(X)$ of all surjective endomorphisms of $X$, up to finite-index. Several applications are given. We also give both algebraic and geometric characterizations of toric varieties via polarized endomorphisms.
We give a characterizaton of smooth ample Hypersurfaces in Abelian Varieties and also describe an irreducible connected component of their moduli space: it consists of the Hypersurfaces of a given polarization type, plus the iterated univariate coverings of normal type (of the same polarization type). The above manifolds yield also a connected component of the open set of Teichmüller space consisting of Kähler complex structures.
Let (X,D) be a dlt pair, where X is a normal projective variety. Let S denote the support of the rounddown of D, and K the canonical divisor of X. We show that any smooth family of canonically polarized varieties over X§is isotrivial if the divisor -(K+D) is ample. This result extends results of Viehweg-Zuo and Kebekus-Kovacs. To prove this result we show that any extremal ray of the moving cone is generated by a family of curves, and these curves are contracted after a certain run of the minimal model program. In the log Fano case, this generalizes a theorem by Araujo from the klt to the dlt …
This text presents several aspects of the theory of equisingularity of complex analytic spaces from the standpoint of Whitney conditions. The goal is to describe from the geometrical, topological, and algebraic viewpoints a canonical locally finite partition of a reduced complex analytic space $X$ into nonsingular strata with the property that the local geometry of $X$ is constant on each stratum. Local polar varieties appear in the title because they play a central role in the unification of viewpoints. The geometrical viewpoint leads to the study of spaces of limit directions at a given poin…
Let L be an ample line bundle on a log variety (V, D) having only log terminal singularities. The Kodaira energy of such a triple (V, D, L) is defined as follows: κε=-Inf{t\in Q | K(V,D)+tL is big}. Here K(V,D)=K_V+D is the log canonical bundle of (V,D) and "big" means κ=dim V. We first show that the rationality of κε, when it is negative, follows from log Flip theorems (thus it is proved for dim V\le 3 at present). Second we consider the case in which D=0, dim V=3 and V has only terminal singularities. Let S be the set of all the possible values of Kodaira energies of such polarized log threef…
Given a one parameter flat family of polarized algebraic varieties, we show that any K-stable limit is unique. In particular, moduli spaces of K-stable polarized varieties are automatically Hausdorff when they exist. We also give a characterization of K-stable limits in terms of the CM line bundle, and some applications to moduli. Our methods work for arbitrary projective schemes in any characteristic.
We show that a general $n$-dimensional polarized abelian variety $(A,L)$ of a given polarization type and satisfying $ h^0(A, L) \geq \dfrac{8^n}{2} \cdot \dfrac{n^n}{n !}$ is projectively normal. In the process, we also obtain a sharp lower bound for the volume of a purely one-dimensional complex analytic subvariety in a geodesic tubular neighborhood of a subtorus of a compact complex torus.
Let $X$ be a normal projective variety and $f:X\to X$ a non-isomorphic polarized endomorphism. We give two characterizations for $X$ to be a toric variety. First we show that if $X$ is $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial and $G$-almost homogeneous for some linear algebraic group $G$ such that $f$ is $G$-equivariant, then $X$ is a toric variety. Next we give a geometric characterization: if $X$ is of Fano type and smooth in codimension 2 and if there is an $f^{-1}$-invariant reduced divisor $D$ such that $f|_{X\backslash D}$ is quasi-étale and $K_X+D$ is $\mathbb{Q}$-Cartier, then $X$ admits a quasi-étale c…
The objective of this paper is to show how the recently proposed method by Giusti, Heintz, Morais, Morgenstern, Pardo \cite{gihemorpar} can be applied to a case of real polynomial equation solving. Our main result concerns the problem of finding one representative point for each connected component of a real bounded smooth hypersurface. The algorithm in \cite{gihemorpar} yields a method for symbolically solving a zero-dimensional polynomial equation system in the affine (and toric) case. Its main feature is the use of adapted data structure: Arithmetical networks and straight-line programs. Th…
Let $(X,L)$ be a polarized complex abelian variety of dimension $g$ where $L$ is a polarization of type $(1,...,1,d)$. For $(X,L)$ genberic we prove the following: (1) If $d \ge g+2$, then $ϕ_L\colon X \to {\bf P}^{d-1}$ defines a birational morphism onto its image. (2) If $d > 2^g$, then $L$ is very ample. We show the latter by checking it on a suitable rank-$(g-1)$-degeneration.

We prove that Prym varieties of algebraic curves with two smooth fixed points of involution are exactly the indecomposable principally polarized abelian varieties whose theta-functions provide explicit formulae for integrable 2D Schrödinger equation.
We consider the problem of testing whether the points in a complex or real variety with non-zero coordinates form a multiplicative group or, more generally, a coset of a multiplicative group. For the coset case, we study the notion of shifted toric varieties which generalizes the notion of toric varieties. This requires a geometric view on the varieties rather than an algebraic view on the ideals. We present algorithms and computations on 129 models from the BioModels repository testing for group and coset structures over both the complex numbers and the real numbers. Our methods over the comp…
We indicate smooth real commuting matrix differential operators whose eigenvalues and eigenfunctions are parametrized by two-dimensional principally polarized abelian varieties.
