We describe a multivariable polynomial invariant for certain class of non isolated hypersurface singularities generalizing the characteristic polynomial on monodromy. The starting point is an extension of a theorem due to Le Dung Trang and K.Saito on commutativity of the local fundamental groups of certain hypersurfaces. The description of multivariable polynomial invariants is given in terms of the ideals and polytopes of quasiadjunction generalizing corresponding data used in the study of the homotopy groups of the complements to projective hypersurfaces and Alexander invariants of plane reducible curves.
For each positive rational number $ε$, we define $K$-theoretic $ε$-stable quasimaps to certain GIT quotients $W\sslash G$. For $ε>1$, this recovers the $K$-theoretic Gromov-Witten theory of $W\sslash G$ introduced in more general context by Givental and Y.-P. Lee. For arbitrary $ε_1$ and $ε_2$ in different stability chambers, these $K$-theoretic quasimap invariants are expected to be related by wall-crossing formulas. We prove wall-crossing formulas for genus zero $K$-theoretic quasimap theory when the target $W\sslash G$ admits a torus action with isolated fixed points and isolated one-dimens…
Asymptotic syzygies of a normal crossing variety follow the same vanishing behavior as one of its smooth components, unless there is a cohomological obstruction arising from how the smooth components intersect each other. In that case, we compute the asymptotic syzygies in terms of the cohomology of the simplicial complex associated to the normal crossing variety. We combine our results on normal crossing varieties with knowledge of degenerations of certain smooth projective varieties to obtain some results on asymptotic syzygies of those smooth projective varieties.
We describe the sheaf T^1(X) of first order deformations of a reduced scheme with normal crossing singularities. In particular, we obtain a formula for T^1(X) in a suitable log resolution of X.
By Hironaka Desingularization Theorem, any real analytic function has only normal crossing singularities after a suitable modification. We focus on the analytic equivalence of such functions with only normal crossing singularities. We prove that for such functions $C^{\infty}$ right equivalence implies analytic equivalence. We prove moreover that the cardinality of the set of equivalence classes is zero or countable.
We prove that every simplicial complex is the dual complex of some simple normal crossing divisor in a smooth variety. As an application, we simplify and extend the results of Kapovich--Kollár (math.AG:1109.4047) on the existence of singularities with given dual complex.
The subject is partial resolution of singularities. Given an algebraic variety X (not necessarily equidimensional) in characteristic zero (or, more generally, a pair (X,D), where D is a divisor on X), we construct a functorial desingularization of all but stable simple normal crossings (stable-snc) singularities, by smooth blowings-up that preserve such singularities. A variety has stable simple normal crossings at a point if, locally, its irreducible components are smooth and tranverse in some smooth embedding variety. We also show that our main assertion is false for more general simple norm…
We introduce a dual logarithmic residue map for hypersurface singularities and use it to answer a question of Kyoji Saito. Our result extends a theorem of Lê and Saito by an algebraic characterization of hypersurfaces that are normal crossing in codimension one. For free divisors, we relate the latter condition to other natural conditions involving the Jacobian ideal and the normalization. This leads to an algebraic characterization of normal crossing divisors. As a side result, describe all free divisors with Gorenstein singular locus.
This note gives two examples of surfaces with normal crossing singularities. In the first example the canonical ring is not finitely generated. In the second, the canonical line bundle is not ample but its pull back to the normalization is ample. The latter answers in the negative a problem left unresolved in [EGA,III.2.6.2] and raised again by Viehweg.
We give a simple geometric proof of the decomposition theorem in terms of Thom-Whitney stratifications by reduction to fibrations by normal crossings divisors over the strata and explain the relation with the local purity theorem an unpublished result of Deligne and Gabber.
Working in characteristic two, I classify nonsmooth Enriques surfaces with normal crossing singularities. Using Kato's theory of logarithmic structures, I show that such surfaces are smoothable and lift to characteristic zero, provided they are d-semistable.
We study the deformation theory of a Fano variety X with normal crossing singularities of dimension at most three. We obtain a formula for the sheaf T^1(X) of first order deformations of X in a suitable log resolution of X and its singular locus Z and we obtain explicit criteria for the existence of smoothings of X.
We study the homotopy groups of complements to reducible divisors on non-singular projective varieties with ample components and isolated non normal crossings. We prove a vanishing theorem generalizing conditions for commutativity of the fundamental groups. The calculation of supports of non vanishing homotopy groups as modules over the fundamental group in terms of the geometry of the locus of non-normal crossings is discussed. We review previous work on the local study of isolated non-normal crossings and relate the motivic zeta function to the local polytopes of quasiadjunction. As an appli…
We develop a Hodge theory for relative simple normal crossing varieties over an Artinian base scheme. We introduce the notion of a mixed Hodge structure over an Artin ring, which axiomatizes the structure that is found on the cohomology of such a variety. As an application we prove that the maps between the graded pieces of the Hodge bundles have constant rank.
Kyoji Saito defined a residue map from the logarithmic differential 1-forms along a reduced complex analytic hypersurface to the meromorphic functions on the hypersurface. He studied the condition that the image of this map coincides with the weakly holomorphic functions, that is, with the functions on the normalization. With Michel Granger, the author proved that this condition is equivalent to the hypersurface being normal crossing in codimension one. In this article, the condition is given a natural interpretation in terms of regular differential forms beyond the hypersurface case. For redu…
It is shown that, for any reduced algebraic variety in characteristic zero, one can resolve all but simple normal crossings (snc) singularities by a finite sequence of blowings-up with smooth centres which, at every step, avoids points where the transformed variety together with the exceptional divisor has only snc singularities. The proof follows the philosophy of arXiv:1107.5595 that the desingularization invariant can be used together with natural geometric information to compute local normal forms of singularities.
This paper obtains criteria for a Fano variety X with normal crossing singularities defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, to be smoothable. The difference with the original version is that the theory of logarithmic structures and deformations is used in order to prove that X is smoothable by a smooth variety, if and only if T^1(X)=O_D, where D is the singular locus of X.
A projective log variety (X, D) is called "a log Fano manifold" if X is smooth and if D is a reduced simple normal crossing divisor on X with -(K_X+D) ample. The n-dimensional log Fano manifolds (X, D) with nonzero D are classified in this article when the log Fano index r of (X, D) satisfies either r\geq n/2 with ρ(X)\geq 2 or r\geq n-2. This result is a partial generalization of the classification of logarithmic Fano threefolds by Maeda.
We establish a formula which decomposes the cohomologies of various sheaves on a simple normal crossings divisor (SNC) $D$ in terms of the simplicial cohomologies of the dual complex $Δ(D)$ with coefficients in a presheaf of vector spaces. This presheaf consists precisely of the corresponding cohomology data on the components of $D$ and on their intersections. We use this formula to give a Hodge decomposition for SNC divisors and investigate the toric setting. We also conjecture the existence of such a formula for effective non-reduced divisors with SNC support, and show that this would imply …
We study smoothing of pencils of curves on surfaces with normal crossings. As a consequence we show that the canonical divisor of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$ is not pseudo-effective in some range, implying that $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{12,6},\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{12,7},\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{13,4}$ and $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{14,3}$ are uniruled. We provide upper bounds for the Kodaira dimension of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{12,8}$ and $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{16}$. We also show that the moduli of $(4g+5)$-pointed hyperelliptic curves $\mathcal{H}_{g,4g+5}$ is uniruled. Together with a re…
In a previous work we have introduced the notion of embedded $\mathbf{Q}$-resolution, which essentially consists in allowing the final ambient space to contain abelian quotient singularities, and A'Campo's formula was calculated in this setting. Here we study the semistable reduction associated with an embedded $\mathbf{Q}$-resolution so as to compute the mixed Hodge structure on the cohomology of the Milnor fiber in the isolated case using a generalization of Steenbrink's spectral sequence. Examples of Yomdin-Lê surface singularities are presented as an application.
Normally one assumes isolated surface singularities to be normal. The purpose of this paper is to show that it can be useful to look at nonnormal singularities. By deforming them interesting normal singularities can be constructed, such as isolated, non Cohen-Macaulay threefold singularities. They arise by a small contraction of a smooth rational curve, whose normal bundle has a sufficiently positive subbundle. We study such singularities from their nonnormal general hyperplane section.
In this paper, we study the kernel of the reciprocity map of certain simple normal crossing varieties over a finite field and give a example of a simple normal crossing surface whose reciprocity map is not injective for any finite scalar extension.
Let X denote a reduced algebraic variety and D a Weil divisor on X. The pair (X,D) is said to be semi-simple normal crossings (semi-snc) at a point a of X if X is simple normal crossings at a (i.e., a simple normal crossings hypersurface, with respect to a local embedding in a smooth ambient variety), and D is induced by the restriction to X of a hypersurface that is simple normal crossings with respect to X. We construct a composition of blowings-up f: X' -> X such that the transformed pair (X',D') is everywhere semi-simple normal crossings, and f is an isomorphism over the semi-simple normal…
The objective of this article is to give an effective algebraic characterization of normal crossing hypersurfaces in complex manifolds. It is shown that a hypersurface has normal crossings if and only if it is a free divisor, has a radical Jacobian ideal and a smooth normalization. Using K. Saito's theory of free divisors, also a characterization in terms of logarithmic differential forms and vector fields is found and and finally another one in terms of the logarithmic residue using recent results of M. Granger and M. Schulze.
In this paper we introduce a notion of symplectic normal crossings divisor V and define the GW invariant of a symplectic manifold X relative such a divisor. Our definition includes normal crossings divisors from algebraic geometry. The invariants we define in this paper are key ingredients in symplectic sum type formulas for GW invariants, and extend those defined in our previous joint work with T.H. Parker [IP1], which covered the case V was smooth. The main step is the construction of a compact moduli space of relatively stable maps into the pair (X, V) in the case V is a symplectic normal c…
We study fundamental groups of projective varieties with normal crossing singularities and of germs of complex singularities. We prove that for every finitely-presented group G there is a complex projective surface S with simple normal crossing singularities only, so that the fundamental group of S is isomorphic to G. We use this to construct 3-dimensional isolated complex singularities so that the fundamental group of the link is isomorphic to G. Lastly, we prove that a finitely-presented group G is Q-superperfect (has vanishing rational homology in dimensions 1 and 2) if and only if G is iso…
In recent work, we introduced topological notions of simple normal crossings symplectic divisor and variety, showed that they are equivalent, in a suitable sense, to the corresponding geometric notions, and established a topological smoothability criterion for them. The present paper extends these notions to arbitrary normal crossings singularities, from both local and global perspectives, and shows that they are also equivalent to the corresponding geometric notions. In subsequent papers, we extend our smoothability criterion to arbitrary normal crossings symplectic varieties and construct a …
We investigate a method of construction of Calabi--Yau manifolds, that is, by smoothing normal crossing varieties. We develop some theories for calculating the Picard groups of the Calabi--Yau manifolds obtained in this method. Some applications are included, such as construction of new examples of Calabi--Yau 3-folds with Picard number one with some interesting properties.
The purpose of this paper is to prove the a priori estimates for constant scalar curvature Kaehler metrics with conic singularities along normal crossing divisors. The zero order estimates are proved by a reformulated version of Alexandrov's maximum principle. The higher order estimates follow from Chen-Cheng's frame work, equipped with new techniques to handle the singularities. Finally, we extend these estimates to the twisted equations.
We use local Hamiltonian torus actions to degenerate a symplectic manifold to a normal crossings symplectic variety in a smooth one-parameter family. This construction, motivated in part by the Gross-Siebert and B. Parker's programs, contains a multifold version of the usual (two-fold) symplectic cut construction and in particular splits a symplectic manifold into several symplectic manifolds containing normal crossings symplectic divisors with shared irreducible components in one step.
We introduce topological notions of normal crossings symplectic divisor and variety and establish that they are equivalent, in a suitable sense, to the desired geometric notions. Our proposed concept of equivalence of associated topological and geometric notions fits ideally with important constructions in symplectic topology. This partially answers Gromov's question on the feasibility of defining singular symplectic (sub)varieties and lays foundation for rich developments in the future. In subsequent papers, we establish a smoothability criterion for symplectic normal crossings varieties, in …
This paper solves the global moduli problem for regular holonomic D-modules with normal crossing singularities on a nonsingular complex projective variety. This is done by introducing a level structure (which gives rise to ``pre-D-modules''), and then introducing a notion of (semi-)stability and applying Geometric Invariant Theory to construct a coarse moduli scheme for semistable pre-D-modules. A moduli is constructed also for the corresponding perverse sheaves, and the Riemann-Hilbert correspondence is represented by an analytic morphism between these moduli spaces.
Our previous papers introduce topological notions of normal crossings symplectic divisor and variety, show that they are equivalent, in a suitable sense, to the corresponding geometric notions, and establish a topological smoothability criterion for normal crossings symplectic varieties. The present paper constructs a blowup, a complex line bundle, and a logarithmic tangent bundle naturally associated with a normal crossings symplectic divisor and determines the Chern class of the last bundle. These structures hav applications in constructions and analysis of various moduli spaces. As a coroll…
We show that isolated surface singularities which are non-normal may have Milnor fibers which are non-diffeomorphic to those of their normalizations. Therefore, non-normal isolated singularities enrich the collection of Stein fillings of links of normal isolated singularities. We conclude with a list of open questions related to this theme.
We present new results on equisingularity and equinormalizability of families with isolated non-normal singularities (INNS) of arbitrary dimension. We define a $δ$-invariant and a $μ$-invariant for an INNS and prove necessary and sufficient numerical conditions for equinormalizability and weak equinormalizability using $δ$ and $μ$. Moreover, we determine the number of connected components of the Milnor fibre of an arbitrary INNS. For families of generically reduced curves, we investigate the topological behavior of the Milnor fibre and characterize topological triviality of such families. Fina…
We consider a compact $C^ω$ manifold $X$ and finitely many regular $C^ω$ submanifolds $Y_1, \dots, Y_q$ of $X$, which are closed subsets in $X$, such that the union of $Y_j$'s has only normal crossings. We show that every continuous function on the union which is of class $C^ω$ on each $Y_j$ can be extended to a $C^ω$ function on $X$. A crucial feature of our proof is to employ basic tools of real analytic geometry -- Cartan Theorems A and B.
Let X be a complex projective variety of dimension n with only isolated normal singularities. In this paper we prove, using mixed Hodge theory, that if the link of each singular point of X is (n-2)-connected, then X is a formal topological space. This result applies to a large class of examples, such as normal surface singularities, varieties with ordinary multiple points, hypersurfaces with isolated singularities and more generally, complete intersections with isolated singularities. We obtain analogous results for contractions of subvarieties.
For each positive rational number epsilon, the theory of epsilon-stable quasimaps to certain GIT quotients W//G developed in arXiv:1106.3724[math.AG] gives rise to a Cohomological Field Theory. Furthermore, there is an asymptotic theory corresponding to epsilon --> 0. For epsilon >1 one obtains the usual Gromov-Witten theory of W//G, while the other theories are new. However, they are all expected to contain the same information and in particular the numerical invariants should be related by wall-crossing formulas. In this paper we analyze the genus zero picture and find that the wall-crossing…
The first author recently introduced a "nearby cycles formalism" in the framework of chain complexes of parity sheaves. In this paper, we compute this functor in two related settings: (i) affine space, stratified by the action of a torus, and (ii) the global Schubert variety associated to the first fundamental coweight of the group $PGL_n$. The latter is a parity-sheaf analogue of Gaitsgory's central sheaf construction.
Our previous paper introduces topological notions of normal crossings symplectic divisor and variety and establishes that they are equivalent, in a suitable sense, to the desired geometric notions. Friedman's d-semistability condition is well-known to be an obstruction to the smoothability of a normal crossings variety in a one-parameter family with a smooth total space in the algebraic geometry category. We show that the direct analogue of this condition is the only obstruction to such smoothability in the symplectic topology category. Every smooth fiber of the families of smoothings we descr…
In this paper we study a notion of volume for Cartier divisors on arbitrary blow-ups of normal complex algebraic varieties of dimension greater than one, with a distinguished point. We apply this to study a volume for normal isolated singularities, generalizing work on surfaces done by Wahl. We also compare this volume of isolated singularities to a different generalization due to Boucksom, de Fernex and Favre.
The philosophy of the article is that the desingularization invariant together with natural geometric information can be used to compute local normal forms of singularities. The idea is used in two related problems: (1) We give a proof of resolution of singularities of a variety or a divisor, except for simple normal crossings (i.e., which avoids blowing up simple normal crossings, and ends up with a variety or a divisor having only simple normal crossings singularities). (2) For more general normal crossings (in a local analytic or formal sense), such a result does not hold. We find the small…
