In this note we show that there are algebraic families of hyperbolic, Fermat-Waring type hypersurfaces in P^n of degree 4(n-1)^2, for all dimensions n>1. Moreover, there are hyperbolic Fermat-Waring hypersurfaces in P^n of degree 4n^2-2n+1 possessing complete hyperbolic, hyperbolically embedded complements.
We show that if a homogeneous polynomial $f$ in $n$ variables has Waring rank $n+1$, then the corresponding projective hypersurface $f=0$ has at most isolated singularities, and the type of these singularities is completely determined by the combinatorics of a hyperplane arrangement naturally associated with the Waring decomposition of $f$. We also discuss the relation between the Waring rank and the type of singularities on a plane curve, when this curve is defined by the suspension of a binary form, or when the Waring rank is 5.
This paper studies the existence of free and very free curves on the degree 5 Fermat hypersurface in P^5 over a field of characteristic 2. We find that such curves exist in degrees 8 and 9 and not in lower degrees.
The variety of all smooth hypersurfaces of given degree and dimension has the Fermat hypersurface as a natural base point. In order to study the period map for such varieties, we first determine the integral polarized Hodge structure of the primitive cohomology of a Fermat hypersurface (as a module over the automorphism group of the hypersurface). We then focus on the degree 3 case and show that the period map for cubic fourfolds as analyzed by R. Laza and the author gives complete information about the period map for cubic hypersurfaces of lower dimension dimension. In particular, we thus rec…
Finding the point in an algebraic variety that is closest to a given point is an optimization problem with many applications. We study the case when the variety is a Fermat hypersurface. Our formula for its Euclidean distance degree is a piecewise polynomial whose pieces are defined by subtle congruence conditons.
In this note we study rational curves on degree $p^r+1$ Fermat hypersurface in $\PP^{p^r+1}_k$, where $k$ is an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p$. The key point is that the presence of Frobenius morphism makes the behavior of rational curves to be very different from that of charateristic 0. We show that if there exists $N_0$ such that for all $e\geq N_0$ there is a degree $e$ very free rational curve on $X$, then $N_0> p^r(p^r-1)$.
We study the intersection of two particular Fermat hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}^3$ over a finite field. Using the Kani-Rosen decomposition we study arithmetic properties of this curve in terms of its quotients. Explicit computation of the quotients is done using a Gröbner basis algorithm. We also study the $p$-rank, zeta function, and number of rational points, of the modulo $p$ reduction of the curve. We show that the Jacobian of the genus 2 quotient is $(4,4)$-split.
We produce special Lagrangian $T^n$-fibrations on the generic regions of some Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in the Fermat family $X_s=\{ Z_0\ldots Z_{n+1}+ e^{-s} ( Z_0^{n+2}+ \ldots Z_{n+1}^{n+2} ) =0 \}\subset \mathbb{CP}^{n+1} $ near the large complex structure limit $s\to +\infty$.
We extend the classical Enriques-Petri Theorem to $s$-subcanonical projectively normal curves, proving that such a curve is $(s+2)$-gonal if and only if it is contained in a surface of minimal degree. Moreover, we show that any Fermat hypersurface of degree $s+2$ is apolar to an $s$-subcanonical $(s+2)$-gonal projectively normal curve, and vice versa.
We study the critical points of the likelihood function over the Fermat hypersurface. This problem is related to one of the main problems in statistical optimization: maximum likelihood estimation. The number of critical points over a projective variety is a topological invariant of the variety and is called maximum likelihood degree. We provide closed formulas for the maximum likelihood degree of any Fermat curve in the projective plane and of Fermat hypersurfaces of degree 2 in any projective space. Algorithmic methods to compute the ML degree of a generic Fermat hypersurface are developed t…
Maximum likelihood degree of a projective variety is the number of critical points of a general likelihood function. In this note, we compute the Maximum likelihood degree of Fermat hypersurfaces. We give a formula of the Maximum likelihood degree in terms of the constants $β_{μ, ν}$, which is defined to be the number of complex solutions to the system of equations $z_1^ν=z_2^ν=\cdots=z_μ^ν=1$ and $z_1+\cdots +z_μ+1=0$.
In this paper we give a construction of Lagrangian torus fibration for Fermat type quintic \cy hypersurfaces via the method of gradient flow. We also compute the monodromy of the expected special Lagrangian torus fibration and discuss structures of singular fibers.
This paper intends to give a mathematical explanation for results on the zeta-function of some families of varieties recently obtained in the context of Mirror Symmetry. In doing so, we obtain concrete and explicit examples for some results recently used in algorithms to count points on smooth hypersurfaces in P^n. In particular, we extend the monomial-motive correspondence of Kadir and Yui and we give explicit solutions to the p-adic Picard-Fuchs equation associated with monomial deformations of Fermat hypersurfaces. As a by-product we obtain Poincare Duality for the Rigid cohomology of certa…
Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be a finite field with $q=p^n$ elements. In this paper, we study the number of $\mathbb{F}_q$-rational points on the affine hypersurface $\mathcal X$ given by $a_1 x_1^{d_1}+\dots+a_s x_s^{d_s}=b$, where $b\in\mathbb{F}_q^*$. A classic well-konwn result from Weil yields a bound for such number of points. This paper presents necessary and sufficient conditions for the maximality and minimality of $\mathcal X$ with respect to Weil's bound.
In this paper we study the Hessian map $h_{d,r}$ which associates to any hypersurface of degree $d$ in ${\mathbb P}^r$ its Hessian hypersurface. We study general properties of this map and we prove that: $h_{d,1}$ is birational onto its image if $d\geq 5$; we study in detail the maps $h_{3,1}$, $h_{4,1}$ and $h_{3,2}$; we study the restriction of the Hessian map to the locus of hypersurfaces of degree $d$ with Waring rank $r+2$ in ${\mathbb P}^r$, proving that this restriction is injective as soon as $r\geq 2$ and $d\geq 3$, which implies that $h_{3,3}$ is birational onto its image; we prove t…
We characterize the smallest codimension components of the Hodge locus of smooth degree $d$ hypersurfaces of the projective space $\mathbb{P}^{n+1}$ of even dimension $n$, passing through the Fermat variety (with $d\neq 3,4,6$). They correspond to the locus of hypersurfaces containing a linear algebraic cycle of dimension $\frac{n}{2}$. Furthermore, we prove that among all the local Hodge loci associated to a non-linear cycle passing through Fermat, the ones associated to a complete intersection cycle of type $(1,1,\ldots,1,2)$ attain the minimal possible codimension of their Zariski tangent s…
The most fundamental example of mirror symmetry compares the Fermat hypersurfaces in P^n and P^n/G, where G is a finite group that acts on P^n and preserves the Fermat hypersurface. We generalise this to hypersurfaces in Grassmannians, where the picture is richer and more complex. There is a finite group G that acts on the Grassmannian Gr(n,r) and preserves an appropriate Calabi-Yau hypersurface. We establish how mirror symmetry, toric degenerations, blow-ups and variation of GIT relate the Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces inside Gr(n,r) and Gr(n,r)/G. This allows us to describe a compactification of …
The purpose of this work is to collect in one place available information on line arrangements known in the literature as braid, monomial, Ceva or Fermat arrangement. They have been studied for a long time and appeared recently in connection with highly interesting problems, namely: the containment problem between symbolic and ordinary powers of ideals and the existence of unexpected hypersurfaces. We also study also derived configurations of points (or more general: linear flats) which arise by intersecting hyperplanes in Fermat arrangements or by taking duals of these hyperplanes. Furthermor…
In this article we show how the data of integrals of algebraic differential forms over algebraic cycles can be used in order to prove that algebraic and Hodge cycle deformations of a given algebraic cycle are equivalent. As an example, we prove that most of the Hodge and algebraic cycles of the Fermat sextic fourfold cannot be deformed in the underlying parameter space. We then take a difference of two linear cycles inside the Fermat variety, and gather evidences that the Hodge locus corresponding to this is smooth and reduced. This implies the existence of new algebraic cycles in the Fermat v…
We present a detailed study of the generalized hypergeometric system introduced by Gel'fand, Kapranov and Zelevinski (GKZ-hypergeometric system) in the context of toric geometry. GKZ systems arise naturally in the moduli theory of Calabi-Yau toric varieties, and play an important role in applications of the mirror symmetry. We find that the Gröbner basis for the so-called toric ideal determines a finite set of differential operators for the local solutions of the GKZ system. At the special point called the large radius limit, we find a close relationship between the principal parts of the oper…
The present paper discusses various mathematical aspects about the rapidity symmetry in chiral Potts model (CPM) in the context of algebraic geometry and group theory . We re-analyze the symmetry group of a rapidity curve in $N$-state CPM, explore the universal group structure for all $N$, and further enlarge it to modular symmetries of the complete rapidity family in CPM. As will be shown in the article that all rapidity curves in $N$-state CPM constitute a Fermat hypersurface in $\PZ^3$ of degree 2N as the natural generalization of the Fermat K3 elliptic surface $(N=2)$, we conduct a thoroug…
Traditional algebraic geometric invariants lose some of their potency in positive characteristic. For instance, smooth projective hypersurfaces may be covered by lines despite being of arbitrarily high degree. The purpose of this dissertation is to define a class of hypersurfaces that exhibits such classically unexpected properties, and to offer a perspective with which to conceptualize such phenomena. Specifically, this dissertation proposes an analogy between the eponymous $q$-bic hypersurfaces -- special hypersurfaces of degree $q+1$, with $q$ any power of the ground field characteristic, a…
Let $f$ be a function on a finite field $F$. The decomposition of the generalized Fermat variety $X$ defined by the multivariate polynomial of degree $n$, $ϕ(x,y,z)=f(x)+f(y)+f(z)$ in $\Bbb{P}^3(\overline{\mathbb{F}}_2)$, plays a crucial role in the study of almost perfect non-linear (APN) functions and exceptional APN functions. Their structure depends fundamentally on the Fermat varieties corresponding to the monomial functions of exceptional degrees $n=2^k+1$ and $n=2^{2k}-2^k+1$ (Gold and Kasami-Welch numbers, respectively). Very important results for these have been obtained by Janwa, McG…
In this article we use a theorem of Carlson and Griffiths and compute periods of linear algebraic cycles inside the Fermat variety of even dimension $n$ and degree $d$. As an application, for examples of $n$ and $d$ we prove that the locus of hypersurfaces containing two linear cycles whose intersection is of low dimension, is a reduced component of the Hodge locus in the underlying parameter space. We also check the same statement for hypersurfaces containing a complete intersection algebraic cycle. Our result confirms the Hodge conjecture for Hodge cycles obtained by the monodromy of the hom…
A Dwork family is a one-parameter monomial deformation of a Fermat hypersurface. In this paper we compute algebraically the invariant part of its Gauss-Manin cohomology under the action of certain subgroup of automorphisms. To achieve that goal we use the algebraic theory of $\mathcal{D}$-modules, especially one-dimensional hypergeometric ones.
The Fermat type Calabi-Yau $n$-fold, denoted by $\mathscr{F}_n$, is the hypersurface of $\mathbb{P}^{n+1}$ defined by $\sum_{i=0}^{n+1}x_i^{n+2}=0$, which is the smooth fiber over the Fermat point $ψ=0$ of the Fermat pencil $$ \sum_{i=0}^{n+1} x^{n+2}_i -(n+2)\, ψ\, \prod_{i=0}^{n+1} x_i =0. $$ The nowhere vanishing holomorphic $n$-form on $\mathscr{F}_n$ defines an $n+1$ dimensional sub-Hodge structure of $(H^n(\mathscr{F}_n,\mathbb{Q}),F_p)$. In this paper, we will formulate a conjecture which says that this $n+1$ dimensional sub-Hodge structure splits completely into the direct sum of pure …
The moduli dependence of $(2,2)$ superstring compactifications based on Calabi--Yau hypersurfaces in weighted projective space has so far only been investigated for Fermat-type polynomial constraints. These correspond to Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds with $c=9$ whose potential is a sum of $A$-type singularities. Here we consider the generalization to arbitrary quasi-homogeneous singularities at $c=9$. We use mirror symmetry to derive the dependence of the models on the complexified Kähler moduli and check the expansions of some topological correlation functions against explicit genus zero and genu…
Let $(X,L)$ be an $n$-dimensional polarized variety. Fujita's conjecture says that if $L^n>1$ then the adjoint bundle $K_X+nL$ is spanned and $K_X+(n+1)L$ is very ample. There are some examples such that $K_X+nL$ is not spanned or $K_X+(n+1)L$ is not very ample. These are $(¶^n,Ø(1))$, hypersurface $M$ of degree $6$ in weighted projective space $¶(3,2,1,1,\cdots ,1)$ with $Ø_M(1)$ and numerically Godeaux surface etc. Numerically Godeaux surface is the quotient space of a Fermat type hypersurface of degree $5$ in $¶^3$ by an action of order $5$. These examples are not so much. We construct new …
We study an algebraic cycle of the form $Z_0= r {\mathbb P}^{\frac{n}{2}}+\check r \check{\mathbb P}^{\frac{n}{2}}$, $r \in{\mathbb N},\check r \in{\mathbb Z},\ \ 1\leq r , |\check r |\leq 10,\ \ \gcd ( r ,\check r )=1$, inside the cubic Fermat variety $X_0$ of even dimension $n\geq 4$ and with $\dim\left ({\mathbb P}^{\frac{n}{2}}\cap \check{\mathbb P}^{\frac{n}{2}}\right)=m$. We take a smooth deformation space $\sf S$ of $X_0$ such that the triple $(X_0, {\mathbb P}^\frac{n}{2}, \check{\mathbb P}^\frac{n}{2})$ becomes rigid. For $m=\frac{n}{2}-2$ and for many examples of $N\in{\mathbb N}$ an…
