In this note we study rational curves on degree $p^r+1$ Fermat hypersurface in $\PP^{p^r+1}_k$, where $k$ is an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p$. The key point is that the presence of Frobenius morphism makes the behavior of rational curves to be very different from that of charateristic 0. We show that if there exists $N_0$ such that for all $e\geq N_0$ there is a degree $e$ very free rational curve on $X$, then $N_0> p^r(p^r-1)$.
This paper studies the existence of free and very free curves on the degree 5 Fermat hypersurface in P^5 over a field of characteristic 2. We find that such curves exist in degrees 8 and 9 and not in lower degrees.
The variety of all smooth hypersurfaces of given degree and dimension has the Fermat hypersurface as a natural base point. In order to study the period map for such varieties, we first determine the integral polarized Hodge structure of the primitive cohomology of a Fermat hypersurface (as a module over the automorphism group of the hypersurface). We then focus on the degree 3 case and show that the period map for cubic fourfolds as analyzed by R. Laza and the author gives complete information about the period map for cubic hypersurfaces of lower dimension dimension. In particular, we thus rec…
We study the intersection of two particular Fermat hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}^3$ over a finite field. Using the Kani-Rosen decomposition we study arithmetic properties of this curve in terms of its quotients. Explicit computation of the quotients is done using a Gröbner basis algorithm. We also study the $p$-rank, zeta function, and number of rational points, of the modulo $p$ reduction of the curve. We show that the Jacobian of the genus 2 quotient is $(4,4)$-split.
In this note we show that there are algebraic families of hyperbolic, Fermat-Waring type hypersurfaces in P^n of degree 4(n-1)^2, for all dimensions n>1. Moreover, there are hyperbolic Fermat-Waring hypersurfaces in P^n of degree 4n^2-2n+1 possessing complete hyperbolic, hyperbolically embedded complements.
Finding the point in an algebraic variety that is closest to a given point is an optimization problem with many applications. We study the case when the variety is a Fermat hypersurface. Our formula for its Euclidean distance degree is a piecewise polynomial whose pieces are defined by subtle congruence conditons.
We produce special Lagrangian $T^n$-fibrations on the generic regions of some Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in the Fermat family $X_s=\{ Z_0\ldots Z_{n+1}+ e^{-s} ( Z_0^{n+2}+ \ldots Z_{n+1}^{n+2} ) =0 \}\subset \mathbb{CP}^{n+1} $ near the large complex structure limit $s\to +\infty$.
We extend the classical Enriques-Petri Theorem to $s$-subcanonical projectively normal curves, proving that such a curve is $(s+2)$-gonal if and only if it is contained in a surface of minimal degree. Moreover, we show that any Fermat hypersurface of degree $s+2$ is apolar to an $s$-subcanonical $(s+2)$-gonal projectively normal curve, and vice versa.
Maximum likelihood degree of a projective variety is the number of critical points of a general likelihood function. In this note, we compute the Maximum likelihood degree of Fermat hypersurfaces. We give a formula of the Maximum likelihood degree in terms of the constants $β_{μ, ν}$, which is defined to be the number of complex solutions to the system of equations $z_1^ν=z_2^ν=\cdots=z_μ^ν=1$ and $z_1+\cdots +z_μ+1=0$.
We study the critical points of the likelihood function over the Fermat hypersurface. This problem is related to one of the main problems in statistical optimization: maximum likelihood estimation. The number of critical points over a projective variety is a topological invariant of the variety and is called maximum likelihood degree. We provide closed formulas for the maximum likelihood degree of any Fermat curve in the projective plane and of Fermat hypersurfaces of degree 2 in any projective space. Algorithmic methods to compute the ML degree of a generic Fermat hypersurface are developed t…
In this paper we give a construction of Lagrangian torus fibration for Fermat type quintic \cy hypersurfaces via the method of gradient flow. We also compute the monodromy of the expected special Lagrangian torus fibration and discuss structures of singular fibers.
Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be a finite field with $q=p^n$ elements. In this paper, we study the number of $\mathbb{F}_q$-rational points on the affine hypersurface $\mathcal X$ given by $a_1 x_1^{d_1}+\dots+a_s x_s^{d_s}=b$, where $b\in\mathbb{F}_q^*$. A classic well-konwn result from Weil yields a bound for such number of points. This paper presents necessary and sufficient conditions for the maximality and minimality of $\mathcal X$ with respect to Weil's bound.
We characterize the smallest codimension components of the Hodge locus of smooth degree $d$ hypersurfaces of the projective space $\mathbb{P}^{n+1}$ of even dimension $n$, passing through the Fermat variety (with $d\neq 3,4,6$). They correspond to the locus of hypersurfaces containing a linear algebraic cycle of dimension $\frac{n}{2}$. Furthermore, we prove that among all the local Hodge loci associated to a non-linear cycle passing through Fermat, the ones associated to a complete intersection cycle of type $(1,1,\ldots,1,2)$ attain the minimal possible codimension of their Zariski tangent s…
This paper intends to give a mathematical explanation for results on the zeta-function of some families of varieties recently obtained in the context of Mirror Symmetry. In doing so, we obtain concrete and explicit examples for some results recently used in algorithms to count points on smooth hypersurfaces in P^n. In particular, we extend the monomial-motive correspondence of Kadir and Yui and we give explicit solutions to the p-adic Picard-Fuchs equation associated with monomial deformations of Fermat hypersurfaces. As a by-product we obtain Poincare Duality for the Rigid cohomology of certa…
We prove a lower bound that agrees with Manin's prediction for the number of rational points of bounded height on the Fermat cubic surface. As an application we provide a simple counterexample to Manin's conjecture over the rationals.
The most fundamental example of mirror symmetry compares the Fermat hypersurfaces in P^n and P^n/G, where G is a finite group that acts on P^n and preserves the Fermat hypersurface. We generalise this to hypersurfaces in Grassmannians, where the picture is richer and more complex. There is a finite group G that acts on the Grassmannian Gr(n,r) and preserves an appropriate Calabi-Yau hypersurface. We establish how mirror symmetry, toric degenerations, blow-ups and variation of GIT relate the Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces inside Gr(n,r) and Gr(n,r)/G. This allows us to describe a compactification of …
In the previous paper by Asakura-Otsubo-Terasoma, we prove that the special values of the hypergeometric function 3F2 at 1 are linear combinations of logarithms of algebraic numbers and 1 over algebraic numbers, if exponents are rational numbers satisfying a certain arithmetic condition. Aoki and Shioda completely classified these sets of rational numbers satisfying this condition in connection with Hodge cycles on Fermat surfaces. In this paper, we give an explicit expression of special values of hypergoemetricy 3F2 which does not belong to exceptional characters.
We give an explicit description of the F_{q^i}-rational points on the Fermat curve u^{q-1}+v^{q-1}+w^{q-1}=0 for each i=1,2,3. As a consequence, we observe that for any such point (u,v,w), the product uvw is a cube in F_{q^i}. We also describe the F_{q^2}-rational points on the Fermat surface u^{q-1}+v^{q-1}+w^{q-1}+x^{q-1}=0, and show that the product of the coordinates of any such points is a square.
For Fermat curves $\mathcal{F}:aX^n+bY^n=Z^n$ defined over $\mathbb{F}_q$, we establish necessary and sufficient conditions for $\mathcal{F}$ to be $\mathbb{F}_q$-Frobenius nonclassical with respect to the linear system of plane cubics. In the $\mathbb{F}_q$-Frobenius nonclassical cases, we determine explicit formulas for the number $N_q(\mathcal{F})$ of $\mathbb{F}_q$-rational points on $\mathcal{F}$. For the remaining Fermat curves, nice upper bounds for $N_q(\mathcal{F})$ are immediately given by the Stöhr-Voloch Theory.
We study rational curves on general Fano hypersurfaces in projective space, mostly by degenerating the hypersurface along with its ambient projective space to reducible varieties. We prove results on existence of low-degree rational curves with balanced normal bundle, and reprove some results on irreducibility of spaces of rational curves of low degree.
We prove the failure of stable rationality for many smooth well formed weighted hypersurfaces of dimension at least 3. It is in particular proved that a very general smooth well formed Fano weighted hypersurface of index one is not stably rational.
This is a continuation of "Rational curves on hypersurfaces of low degree", math.AG/0203088. We prove that if d^2+d+1 < n and d > 2, then for a general hypersurface X_d in P^n of degree d, for each degree e the space of rational curves of degree e on X is itself a rationally connected variety.
We prove a conjecture of Voisin that no two distinct points on a very general hypersurface of degree $2n$ in ${\mathbb P}^n$ are rationally equivalent.
Using ideas from the theory of tropical curves and degeneration, we prove that any Fano hypersurface (and more generally Fano complete intersections) is swept by at most quadratic rational curves.
We determine the rationality of very general quasismooth Fano 3-fold weighted hypersurfaces completely and determine the stable rationality of them except for cubic 3-folds. More precisely we prove that (i) very general Fano 3-fold weighted hypersurfaces of index 1 or 2 are not stably rational except possibly for the cubic threefolds, (ii) among the 27 families of Fano 3-fold weighted hypersurfaces of index greater than 2, very general members of specific 7 families are not stably rational and the remaining 20 families consists of rational varieties.
We give the first evidence for a conjecture that a general, index-one, Fano hypersurface is not unirational: (i) a general point of the hypersurface is contained in no rational surface ruled, roughly, by low-degree rational curves, and (ii) a general point is contained in no image of a Del Pezzo surface.
We develop a technique that allows us to prove results about subvarieties of general type hypersurfaces. As an application, we use a result of Clemens and Ran to prove that a very general hypersurface of degree (3n+1)/2 \leq d \leq 2n-3 contains lines but no other rational curves.
We prove that the defining equations of the Fermat curves of prime degree cannot be written as the determinant of symmetric matrices with entries in linear forms in three variables with rational coefficients. In the proof, we use a relation between symmetric matrices with entries in linear forms and non-effective theta characteristics on smooth plane curves. We also use some results of Gross-Rohrlich on the rational torsion points on the Jacobian varieties of the Fermat curves of prime degree.
We show that a wide class of hypersurfaces in all dimensions are not stably rational. Namely, for all d at least about 2n/3, a very general complex hypersurface of degree d in P^{n+1} is not stably rational. The statement generalizes Colliot-Thelene and Pirutka's theorem that very general quartic 3-folds are not stably rational. The result covers all the degrees in which Kollar proved that a very general hypersurface is non-rational, and a bit more. For example, very general quartic 4-folds are not stably rational, whereas it was not even known whether these varieties are rational.
This article proves hypersurfaces of degree d in projective n-space are "rationally simply-connected" if $d^2 \leq n$. In a forthcoming paper, de Jong and I prove a slightly weaker result when $d^2 \leq n+1$.
In this paper, we prove three related results; (1) Extension of our result in [10] to all generic hypersurfaces. More precisely, the normal sheaf of a generic rational map $c_0$ to a generic hypersurface $X_0$ of $\mathbf P^n, n\geq 4$ has a vanishing higher cohomology, \begin{equation} H^1(N_{c_0/X_0})=0. \end{equation} As applications we give (2) A solution to a Voisin's conjecture [9] on a covering of a generic hypersurface by rational curves (3) A classification of rational curves on hypersurfaces of general type--a solution to another Voisin's conjecture [9].
We investigate the spaces of rational curves on a general hypersurface. In particular, we show that for a general degree $d$ hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^n$ with $n \geq d+2$, the space $\overline{\mathcal{M}_{0,0}}(X,e)$ of degree $e$ Kontsevich stable maps from a rational curve to $X$ is an irreducible local complete intersection stack of dimension $e(n-d+1)+n-4$.
We prove that a very general complex hypersurface of degree $n+1$ in $\mathbb{P}^{n+1}$ containing an $r$-plane with multiplicity $m$ is not stably rational for $n \ge 3$, $m, r > 0$ and $n \ge m+r$. We also investigate failure of stable rationality of a very general hypersurface of degree $n+1$ in $\mathbb{P}^{n+1}$ admitting several isolated ordinary double points.
We propose and compare various techiques available to produce smooth cubic hypersurfaces over a non-algebraically-closed field which have rational points but which are not stably rational over their ground field.
We prove that the sweeping components of the space of smooth rational curves in a smooth hypersurface of degree $d$ in $P^n$ are not uniruled if $(n+1)/2 \leq d \leq n-3$. We also show that for any positive integer $e$, the space of smooth rational curves of degree $e$ in a general hypersurface of degree $d$ in $P^n$ is not uniruled when $d \geq e \sqrt{n}$.
In this paper we present a concrete counterexample to the conjecture of Kontsevich about the polynomial countability of graph hypersurfaces. In contrast to this, we show that the "wheel with spokes" graphs $WS_n$ are polynomially countable.
On a general Fano hypersurface in projective space, we determine for infinitely many $k$ the minimal degree $e$ of a rational curve through a general collection of $k$ points. In the case of a hypersurface of index 1, our results hold for all $k\geq 1$. In an appendix, M.C. Chang proves an arithmetical result which implies that in the case of index $>1$, the density of the set of curve degrees $e$ covered by our method is approximately $\frac{(n-d)(d-\frac{5}{2})}{(n-2)d}$.
We study rational surfaces on very general Fano hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}^n$, with an eye toward unirationality. We prove that given any fixed family of rational surfaces, a very general hypersurface of degree $d$ sufficiently close to $n$ and $n$ sufficiently large will admit no maps from surfaces in that family. In particular, this shows that for such hypersurfaces, any rational curve in the space of rational curves must meet the boundary. We also prove that for any fixed ratio $α$, a very general hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^n$ of degree $d$ sufficiently close to $n$ will admit no maps fr…
We show that the degrees of rational endomorphisms of very general complex Fano and Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces satisfy certain congruence conditions by specializing to characteristic p. As a corollary we show that very general n-dimensional hypersurfaces of degree $d\ge 5\lceil (n+3)/6\rceil$ are not birational to elliptic fibrations. A key part of the argument is to resolve singularities of general p-cyclic covers in mixed characteristic p.
Using Voisin's method we prove that a very general hypersurface of degree at least 4 in complex projective space of dimension 6, 7, 8 or 9 is not stably rational and so, in particular, not rational. We obtain the same conclusion for the double covering of projective space of dimension 6, 7, 8 or 9, branched along a very general quartic hypersurface. On the other hand, such double coverings as well as general quartic hypersurfaces of dimension at least 5 are known to be unirational.
Let $(X,D)$ be a pair where $X$ is a projective variety. We study in detail how the behavior of rational curves on $X$ as well as the positivity of $-(K_X+D)$ and $D$ influence the behavior of rational curves on $D$. In particular we give criteria for uniruledness and rational connectedness of components of $D$.
Let n > 2 and let d < (n+1)/2. We prove that for a general hypersurface X of degree d in P^n, all the genus 0 Kontsevich moduli spaces M_{0,n}(X,e) are irreducible, reduced, local complete intersection stacks of the expected dimension.
Let $\mathcal{X}$ be an irreducible algebraic curve defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ of characteristic $p>2$. Assume that the $\mathbb{F}_q$-automorphism group of $\mathcal{X}$ admits as an automorphism group the direct product of two cyclic groups $C_m$ and $C_n$ of orders $m$ and $n$ prime to $p$ such that both quotient curves $\mathcal{X}/C_n$ and $\mathcal{X}/C_m$ are rational. In this paper, we provide a complete classification of such curves, as well as a characterization of their full automorphism groups.
For a hypersurface in complex projective space $X\subset \PP^n$, we investigate the singularities and Kodaira dimension of the Kontsevich moduli spaces $\Kbm{0,0}{X,e}$ parametrizing rational curves of degree $e$ on $X$. If $d+e \leq n$ and $X$ is a general hypersurface of degree $d$, we prove that $\Kbm{0,0}{X,e}$ has only canonical singularities and we conjecture the same is true for the coarse moduli space $\kbm{0,0}{X,e}$.This investigation is motivated by the question of which Fano hypersurfaces are unirational.
Traditional algebraic geometric invariants lose some of their potency in positive characteristic. For instance, smooth projective hypersurfaces may be covered by lines despite being of arbitrarily high degree. The purpose of this dissertation is to define a class of hypersurfaces that exhibits such classically unexpected properties, and to offer a perspective with which to conceptualize such phenomena. Specifically, this dissertation proposes an analogy between the eponymous $q$-bic hypersurfaces -- special hypersurfaces of degree $q+1$, with $q$ any power of the ground field characteristic, a…
