Given a hypersurface coamoeba of a Laurent polynomial f, it is an open problem to describe the structure of its set of connected complement components. In this paper we approach this problem by introducing the lopsided coamoeba. We show that the closed lopsided coamoeba comes naturally equipped with an order map, i.e. a map v from its set of connected complement components to a translated lattice inside the zonotope of a Gale dual of the point configuration supp(f). Under a natural assumption, the map v is a bijection. Finally we use this map to obtain new results concerning coamoebas of polynomials of small codimension.
Let $V$ be a complex algebraic hypersurface defined by a polynomial $f$ with Newton polytope $Δ$. It is well known that the spine of its amoeba has a structure of a tropical hypersurface. We prove in this paper that there exists a complex tropical hypersurface $V_{\infty, f}$ such that its coamoeba is homeomorphic to the closure in the real torus of the coamoeba of $V$. Moreover, the coamoeba of $V_{\infty, f}$ contains an arrangement of $(n-1)$-torus depending only on the geometry of $Δ$ and the coefficients of $f$. In addition, we can consider this arrangement, as a weighted codual hyperplan…
We introduce in this paper the concept of tropical mirror hypersurfaces and we prove a complex tropical localization Theorem which is a version of Kapranov's Theorem \cite{K-00} in tropical geometry. We give a geometric and a topological equivalence between coamoebas of complex algebraic hypersurfaces defined by a maximally sparse polynomial and coamoebas of maximally sparse complex tropical hypersurfaces.
We show that the complement of the coamoeba of a variety of codimension k+1 is k-convex, in the sense of Gromov and Henriques. This generalizes a result of Nisse for hypersurface coamoebas. We use this to show that the complement of the nonarchimedean coamoeba of a variety of codimension k+1 is k-convex.
A coamoeba is the image of a subvariety of a complex torus under the argument map to the real torus. Similarly, a non-archimedean coamoeba is the image of a subvariety of a torus over a non-archimedean field with complex residue field under an argument map. The phase tropical variety is the closure of the image under the pair of maps, tropicalization and argument. We describe the structure of non-archimedean coamoebae and phaseropical varieties in terms of complex coamoebae and their phase limit sets. The argument map depends upon a section of the valuation map, and we explain how this choice …
The coamoeba of any complex algebraic plane curve $V$ is its image in the real torus under the argument map. The area counted with multiplicity of the coamoeba of any algebraic curve in $(\mathbb{C}^*)^2$ is bounded in terms of the degree of the curve. We show in this Note that up to multiplication by a constant in $(\mathbb{C}^*)^2$, the complex algebraic plane curves whose coamoebas are of maximal area (counted with multiplicity) are defined over $\mathbb{R}$, and their real loci are Harnack curves possibly with ordinary real isolated double points (c.f. \cite{MR-00}). In addition, we charac…
Amoebas and coamoebas are the logarithmic images of algebraic varieties and the images of algebraic varieties under the arg-map, respectively. We present new techniques for computational problems on amoebas and coamoebas, thus establishing new connections between (co-)amoebas, semialgebraic and convex algebraic geometry and semidefinite programming. Our approach is based on formulating the membership problem in amoebas (respectively coamoebas) as a suitable real algebraic feasibility problem. Using the real Nullstellensatz, this allows to tackle the problem by sums of squares techniques and se…
A coamoeba is the image of a subvariety of a complex torus under the argument map to the real torus. We describe the structure of the boundary of the coamoeba of a variety, which we relate to its logarithmic limit set. Detailed examples of lines in three-dimensional space illustrate and motivate these results.
We prove the minimality of the CW-complex structure for complements of hyperplane arrangements in $\mathbb C^n$ by using the theory of Lefschetz pencils and results on the variation maps within a pencil of hyperplanes. This also provides a method to compute the Betti numbers of complements of arrangements via global polar invariants.
Motivated by the theory of Inoue-type varieties, we give a structure theorem for projective manifolds $W_0$ with the property of admitting a 1-parameter deformation where $W_t$ is a hypersurface in a projective smooth manifold $Z_t$. Their structure is the one of special iterated univariate coverings which we call of normal type, which essentially means that the line bundles where the univariate coverings live are tensor powers of the normal bundle to the image $X$ of $W_0$. We give applications to the case where $Z_t$ is projective space, respectively an Abelian variety.
In this paper we give a positive answer to a question of Nash concerning the arc space of a singularity, for the class of quasi-ordinary hypersurface singularities, extending to this case previous results and techniques of Shihoko Ishii.
Given a hypersurface in the complex projective $n$-space we prove several known formulas for the degree of its polar map by purely algebro-geometric methods. Furthermore, we give formulas for the degree of its polar map in terms of the degrees of the polar maps of its components. As an application, we classify the plane curves with polar map of low degree, including a very simple proof of I. Dolgachev's classification of homaloidal plane curves.
The variety of all smooth hypersurfaces of given degree and dimension has the Fermat hypersurface as a natural base point. In order to study the period map for such varieties, we first determine the integral polarized Hodge structure of the primitive cohomology of a Fermat hypersurface (as a module over the automorphism group of the hypersurface). We then focus on the degree 3 case and show that the period map for cubic fourfolds as analyzed by R. Laza and the author gives complete information about the period map for cubic hypersurfaces of lower dimension dimension. In particular, we thus rec…
In this article we study Brill-Noether loci of moduli space of stable bundles over smooth surfaces. We define Petri map as an analogy with the case of curves. We show the non-emptiness of certain Brill-Noether loci over very general quintic hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^3$, and use the Petri map to produce components of expected dimension.
We prove that a smooth Fano hypersurface $V=V_M\subset{\Bbb P}^M$, $M\geq 6$, is birationally superrigid. In particular, it cannot be fibered into uniruled varieties by a non-trivial rational map and each birational map onto a minimal Fano variety of the same dimension is a biregular isomorphism. The proof is based on the method of maximal singularities combined with the connectedness principle of Shokurov and Koll\' ar.
In this paper we study the Hessian map $h_{d,r}$ which associates to any hypersurface of degree $d$ in ${\mathbb P}^r$ its Hessian hypersurface. We study general properties of this map and we prove that: $h_{d,1}$ is birational onto its image if $d\geq 5$; we study in detail the maps $h_{3,1}$, $h_{4,1}$ and $h_{3,2}$; we study the restriction of the Hessian map to the locus of hypersurfaces of degree $d$ with Waring rank $r+2$ in ${\mathbb P}^r$, proving that this restriction is injective as soon as $r\geq 2$ and $d\geq 3$, which implies that $h_{3,3}$ is birational onto its image; we prove t…
The moduli space M_0 of semi-stable rank 2 vector bundles with fixed trivial determinant over a non-hyperelliptic curve C of genus 3 is isomorphic to a quartic hypersurface in P^7 (Coble's quartic). We show that M_0 is self-dual and that its polar map associates to a stable bundle E \in M_0 a bundle F which is characterized by dim H^0(C, E \otimes F) = 4. The projective space PH^0(C, E \otimes F) is equipped with a net of quadrics Πand it is shown that the map which associates to E \in M_0 the isomorphism class of the plane quartic Hessian curve of Πis a dominant map to the moduli space of gen…
We solved the long-standing problem of describing the cohomology ring of semiample hypersurfaces in complete simplicial toric varieties. Also, the monomial-divisor mirror map is generalized to a map between the whole Picard group and the space of infinitesimal deformations for a mirror pair of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces. This map is compatible with certain vanishing limiting products of the subrings of the chiral rings, on which the ring structure is related to a product of the roots of $A$-type Lie algebra.
We study the variation of relative cohomology for a pair consisting of a smooth projective hypersurface and an algebraic subvariety in it. We construct an inhomogeneous Picard-Fuchs equation by applying a Picard-Fuchs operator to the holomorphic top form on a toric Calabi-Yau hypersurface, and deriving a general formula for the $d$-exact form on one side of the equation. We also derive a double residue formula, giving a purely algebraic way to compute the inhomogeneous Picard-Fuchs equations for Abel-Jacobi map, which has played an important role in recent study of D-branes [25]. Using the var…
A polar hypersurface P of a complex analytic hypersurface germ, f=0, can be investigated by analyzing the invariance of certain Newton polyhedra associated to the image of P, with respect to suitable coordinates, by certain morphisms appropriately associated to f. We develop this general principle of Teissier (see Varietes polaires. I. Invariants polaires des singularites d'hypersurfaces, Invent. Math. 40 (1977), 3, 267-292) when f=0 is a quasi-ordinary hypersurface germ and P is the polar hypersurface associated to any quasi-ordinary projection of f=0. We build a decomposition of P in bunches…
Mirror Symmetry, Picard-Fuchs equations and instanton corrected Yukawa couplings are discussed within the framework of toric geometry. It allows to establish mirror symmetry of Calabi-Yau spaces for which the mirror manifold had been unavailable in previous constructions. Mirror maps and Yukawa couplings are explicitly given for several examples with two and three moduli.
Let $V_{n,d}$ be the variety of equations for hypersurfaces of degree $d$ in $\mathbb{P}^n(\mathbb{C})$ with singularities not worse than simple nodes. We prove that the orbit map $G'=SL_{n+1}(\mathbb{C}) \to V_{n,d}$, $g\mapsto g\cdot s_0$, $s_0\in V_{n,d}$ is surjective on the rational cohomology if $n>1$, $d\geq 3$, and $(n,d)\neq (2,3)$. As a result, the Leray-Serre spectral sequence of the map from $V_{n,d}$ to the homotopy quotient $(V_{n,d})_{hG'}$ degenerates at $E_2$, and so does the Leray spectral sequence of the quotient map $V_{n,d}\to V_{n,d}/G'$ provided the geometric quotient $V…
Kyoji Saito defined a residue map from the logarithmic differential 1-forms along a reduced complex analytic hypersurface to the meromorphic functions on the hypersurface. He studied the condition that the image of this map coincides with the weakly holomorphic functions, that is, with the functions on the normalization. With Michel Granger, the author proved that this condition is equivalent to the hypersurface being normal crossing in codimension one. In this article, the condition is given a natural interpretation in terms of regular differential forms beyond the hypersurface case. For redu…
Amoebas are projections of complex algebraic varieties in the algebraic torus under a Log-absolute value map, which have connections to various mathematical subjects. While amoebas of hypersurfaces have been intensively studied in recent years, the non-hypersurface case is barely understood so far. We investigate intersections of amoebas of $n$ hypersurfaces in $(\mathbb{C}^*)^n$, which are canonical supersets of amoebas given by non-hypersurface varieties. Our main results are amoeba analogs of Bernstein's Theorem and Bézout's Theorem providing an upper bound for the number of connected compo…
Given a nonconstant polynomial map over the reals having an isolated critical point in the origin and with zero locus of positive dimension, we establish a formula for the singular homology groups of a Milnor fibre relative to its boundary.
We describe a new relation between the topology of hypersurface complements, Milnor fibers and degree of gradient mappings. The main tools are polar curves and the affine Lefschetz theory developped by H. Hamm and A. Némethi. In the special case of the hyperplane arrangements, we strengthen some results due to Orlik and Terao (see Math. Ann. 301(1995)) and obtain an independant proof for the minimality of hyperplane arrangements (see Randell math.AT/0011101 for another proof of this result).
Given a polynomial map $f:\Bbb C^{n+1}\to\Bbb C$, one can attach to it a geometrical variation of mixed Hodge structures (MHS) which gives rise to a limit MHS. The equivariant Hodge numbers of this MHS are analytical invariants of the polynomial map and reflect its asymptotic behaviour. In this paper we compute them for a class of generic polynomials, in terms of Hodge numbers attached to isolated hypersurface singularities and Hodge numbers of cyclic coverings of projective space branched along a hypersurface.
