In this article we study infinitesimal deformations of toric hypersurfaces. We introduce a Kodaira-Spencer map and compute its kernel. By introducing some new Laurent polynomials we make our computation as explicit as possible. This widely generalizes results of Griffiths for projective hypersurfaces.
We define a new notion of supported global deformation class for a semistable family of complex varieties over a curve $f\colon X\to B$. We use this notion to study when $X$, possibly up to a finite covering, has a generically finite morphism onto a product $B\times Y$ with $Y$ of general type.
We give a universal approach to the deformation-obstruction theory of objects of the derived category of coherent sheaves over a smooth projective family. We recover and generalise the obstruction class of Lowen and Lieblich, and prove that it is a product of Atiyah and Kodaira--Spencer classes. This allows us to obtain deformation-invariant virtual cycles on moduli spaces of objects of the derived category on threefolds.
A Finsler metric, whose holomorphic curvature is bounded from above by a negative constant, is constructed on the moduli stack of canonically polarized manifolds including singularities. Demailly's version of Ahlfors' lemma yields hyperbolicity of the moduli stack.
Faltings showed that "arithmetic Kodaira--Spencer classes" satisfying a certain compatibility axiom cannot exist. By modifying his definitions slightly, we show that the Deligne--Illusie classes satisfy what could be considered an "arithmetic Kodaira--Spencer" compatibility condition. Afterwards we discuss a "wittfinitesimal Torelli problem" and its relation to CM Jacobians.
Let $A$ be an abelian scheme over a smooth affine complex variety $S$, $\varOmega_A$ the $\sO_S$-module of $1$-forms of the first kind on $A$, $\sD_S\varOmega_A$ the $\sD_S$-module spanned by $\varOmega_A$ in the first algebraic De Rham cohomology module, and $θ_\partial: \varOmega_A \to \sD_S\varOmega_A/\varOmega_A$ the Kodaira-Spencer map attached to a tangent vector field $\partial$ on $S$. We compare the rank of $\sD_S\varOmega_A/\varOmega_A$ to the maximal rank of $θ_\partial$ when $\partial$ varies: we show that both ranks do not change when one passes to the "modular case", \ie when one…
The cosection lemma proved by J. Li and Y.H. Kiem said the intrinsic normal cone lies inside the kernel of any cosection of the obstruction sheaf when the moduli has a perfect obstruction theory. With a definition of higher tangent vectors of a scheme at a point, and a construction of the derived Kodaira Spencer map by K. Behrend and B. Fantechi, we prove a derived version of cosection lemma without perfect obstruction theory condition. As an application we give a short proof of the Kodaira's Principle \textit{ambient cohomology annihilates obstruction} (semiregularity), assuming the existence…
We study the cohomology groups $H^1(X,Θ_X(-mK_X))$, for $m\geq1$, where $X$ is a smooth minimal complex surface of general type, $Θ_X$ its holomorphic tangent bundle, and $K_X$ its canonical divisor. One of the main results is a precise vanishing criterion for $H^1(X,Θ_X (-K_X))$. The proof is based on the geometric interpretation of non-zero cohomology classes of $H^1(X,Θ_X (-K_X))$. This interpretation in turn uses higher rank vector bundles on $X$. We apply our methods to the long standing conjecture saying that the irregularity of surfaces in $\PP^4$ is at most 2. We show that if $X$ has p…
If $X$ is a smooth projective variety moving in a family, we define a secondary Kodaira-Spencer class for nonabelian Dolbeault cohomology $Hom(X_{Dol}, T)$ of $X$ with coefficients in the complexified 2-sphere $T=S^2\otimes \cc$ (which is a 3-stack on $Sch /\cc$). Let $Z$ be a simply connected projective surface with $h^{2,0}\neq 0$, and let $X$ be the blow-up of $Z$ at a point $P$. As $P$ moves in $Z$, the blow-up $X$ moves in a family and we show that the secondary Kodaira-Spencer class is nontrivial. This contrasts with the fact that the variations of mixed Hodge structures on the homotopy …
For a smooth Deligne-Mumford stack over $\CC$, we define its associated Kodaira-Spencer differential graded Lie algebra and show that the deformation functor of the stack is isomorphic to the deformation functor of the Kodaira-Spencer algebra if the stack is proper over $\CC$.
In \cite{K} we introduced two variants of higher-order differentials of the period map and showed how to compute them for a variation of Hodge structure that comes from a deformation of a compact Kähler manifold. More recently there appeared several works (\cite{BG}, \cite{EV}, \cite{R}) defining higher tangent spaces to the moduli and the corresponding higher Kodaira-Spencer classes of a deformation. The $n^{th}$ such class $κ_n$ captures all essential information about the deformation up to $n^{th}$ order. A well-known result of Griffiths states that the (first) differential of the period ma…
We explain the homological relation between the Frobenius structure on the deformation space of Calabi-Yau manifold and the gauge theory of Kodaira-Spencer gravity. We show that the genus zero generating function of descendant invariants on Calabi-Yau manifolds from Barannikov's semi-infinite variation of Hodge structures is equivalent to the Kodaira-Spencer gauge theory at tree level.
We prove the weak positivity of the kernels of Kodaira-Spencer- type maps for pure Hodge module extensions of generically defined variations of Hodge structure.
There is a natural sequence of CY manifolds that are double covers of the projective g dimensional spaces ramified over 2g+2 hyperplanes. We observe that some of them are obtained as quotient of the action of the semi-direct product of g-1 copies of cyclic Z/2Z groups with the symmetric g group on the product of g-copies of hyper-elliptic curves of genus g. The quotient is a double cover of the projective g space ramified over 2g+2 hyperplanes. This construction generalizes the construction of a Kummer surface. The Kodaira-Spencer classes on the Jacobian are invariant under the action of the g…
For a complete, smooth toric variety Y, we describe the graded vector space T_Y^1. Furthermore, we show that smooth toric surfaces are unobstructed and that a smooth toric surface is rigid if and only if it is Fano. For a given toric surface we then construct homogeneous deformations by means of Minkowski decompositions of polyhedral subdivisions, compute their images under the Kodaira-Spencer map, and show that they span T_Y^1.
Let X be a smooth complete toric variety. We describe the Altmann-Ilten-Vollmert equivariant deformations of toric varieties in the language of Cox rings. More precisely we construct one parameters families of deformations of X, such that the total space of the deformation is a T-variety of complexity one defined by a trinomial equation, and the deformation map is equivariant with respect to the torus action. Moreover we show that the images of all these families via the Kodaira-Spencer map form a basis of the vector space H1(X,T_X).
We generalized the construction of deformations of affine toric varieties of K. Altmann and our previous construction of deformations of weak Fano toric varieties to the case of arbitrary toric varieties by introducing the notion of Minkowski sum decompositions of polyhedral complexes. Our construction embeds the original toric variety into a higher dimensional toric variety where the image is given by a prime binomial complete intersection ideal in Cox homogeneous coordinates. The deformations are realized by families of complete intersections. For compact simplicial toric varieties with at w…
The article proves the Infinitesimal Torelli theorem for surfaces subject to the following conditions: 1) the canonical bundle of a surface is ample and generated by its global sections, 2)the geometric genus $p_g \geq 4$, 3) the irregularity $q=0$ . The main novelty is a realization of the Kodaira-Spencer classes lying in the kernel of the cohomology cup-product controlling the derivative of the period map of weight 2 in the category of the coherent sheaves of a surface.
We show how to construct certain homogeneous deformations for rational normal varieties with codimension one torus action. This can then be used to construct homogeneous deformations of any toric variety in arbitrary degree. For locally trivial deformations coming from this construction, we calculate the image of the Kodaira-Spencer map. We then show that for a smooth complete toric variety, our homogeneous deformations span the space of first-order deformations.
For an affine, toric Q-Gorenstein variety Y (given by a lattice polytope Q) the vector space T^1 of infinitesimal deformations is related to the complexified vector spaces of rational Minkowski summands of faces of Q. Moreover, assuming Y to be an isolated, at least 3-dimensional singularity, Y will be rigid unless it is even Gorenstein and dim Y=3 (dim Q=2). For this particular case, so-called toric deformations of Y correspond to Minkowski decompositions of Q into a sum of lattice polygons. Their Kodaira-Spencer-map can be interpreted in a very natural way. We regard the projective variety P…
The compact complex manifolds considered in this article are principal torus bundles over a torus. We consider the Kodaira Spencer map of the complete Appell Humbert family (introduced by the first author in Part I) and are able to show that we obtain in this way a connected component of the space of complex structures each time that the base dimension is two, the fibre dimension is one, and a suitable topological condition is verified.
We introduce a new notion of deformation of complex structure, which we use as an adaptation of Kodaira's theory of deformations, but that is better suited to the study of noncompact manifolds. We present several families of deformations illustrating this new approach. Our examples include toric Calabi--Yau threefolds, cotangent bundles of flag manifolds, and semisimple adjoint orbits, and we describe their Hodge theoretical invariants, depicting Hodge diamonds and KKP diamonds.
Let $X$ be a compact connected Riemann surface of genus $g$, with $g\geq 2$, and ${\cal M}_ξ$ a smooth moduli space of fixed determinant semistable vector bundles of rank $n$, with $n\geq 2$, over $X$. Take a smooth anticanonical divisor $D$ on ${\cal M}_ξ$. So $D$ is a Calabi-Yau variety. We compute the number of moduli of $D$, namely $\dim H^1(D, T_D)$, to be $3g-4 + \dim H^0({\cal M}_ξ, K^{-1}_{{\cal M}_ξ})$. Denote by $\cal N$ the moduli space of all such pairs $(X',D')$, namely $D'$ is a smooth anticanonical divisor on a smooth moduli space of semistable vector bundles over the Riemann su…
