The fundamental notion of non-abelian generalized cohomology gained recognition in algebraic topology as the non-abelian Poincaré-dual to "factorization homology", and in theoretical physics as providing flux-quantization for non-linear Gauss laws. However, already the archetypical example -- unstable Cohomotopy, first studied almost a century ago by Pontrjagin -- has remained underappreciated as a cohomology theory and has only recently received attention as a flux-quantizaton law ("Hypothesis H").
Here we lay out a general construction of the analogue of the Chern character map on twisted equivariant non-abelian cohomology theories (with equivariantly simply-connected classifying spaces) and illustrate the construction by spelling out a twisted equivariant form of Cohomotopy as an archetypical and intriguing running example, essentially by computing its equivariant Sullivan model.
We close with an outlook on the application of this result to the rigorous deduction of anyonic quantum states on M5-branes wrapped over Seifert 3-orbifolds.
In the background effective field theory of heterotic string theory, the Green-Schwarz anomaly cancellation mechanism plays a key role. Here we reinterpret it and its magnetic dual version in terms of differential twisted String- and differential twisted Fivebrane-structures that generalize the notion of Spin-structures and Spin-lifting gerbes and their differential refinement to smooth Spin-connections. We show that all these structures can be encoded in terms of nonabelian cohomology, twisted nonabelian cohomology, and differential twisted nonabelian cohomology, extending the differential ge…
We consider SU(3)-equivariant dimensional reduction of Yang-Mills theory on Kaehler manifolds of the form M x SU(3)/H, with H = SU(2) x U(1) or H = U(1) x U(1). The induced rank two quiver gauge theories on M are worked out in detail for representations of H which descend from a generic irreducible SU(3)-representation. The reduction of the Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau equations on these spaces induces nonabelian quiver vortex equations on M, which we write down explicitly. When M is a noncommutative deformation of the space C^d, we construct explicit BPS and non-BPS solutions of finite energy for …
Abelian gerbes and twisted bundles describe the topology of the NS-NS 3-form gauge field strength H. We review how they have been usefully applied to study and resolve global anomalies in open string theory. Abelian 2-gerbes and twisted nonabelian gerbes describe the topology of the 4-form field strength G of M-theory. We show that twisted nonabelian gerbes are relevant in the study and resolution of global anomalies of multiple coinciding M5-branes. Global anomalies for one M5-brane have been studied by Witten and by Diaconescu, Freed and Moore. The structure and the differential geometry of …
We define exotic twisted $S^1$-equivariant cohomology for the loop space $LZ$ of a smooth manifold $Z$ via the invariant differential forms on $LZ$ with coefficients in the (typically non-flat) holonomy line bundle of a gerbe, with differential an equivariantly flat superconnection. We introduce the twisted Bismut-Chern character form, a loop space refinement of the twisted Chern character form, which represent classes in the completed periodic exotic twisted $S^1$-equivariant cohomology of $LZ$. We establish a localisation theorem for the completed periodic exotic twisted $S^1$-equivariant co…
In this paper we introduce exotic twisted $\mathbb T$-equivariant K-theory of loop space $LZ$ depending on the (typically non-flat) holonomy line bundle ${\mathcal L}^B$ on $LZ$ induced from a gerbe with connection $B$ on $Z$. We also define exotic twisted $\mathbb T$-equivariant Chern character that maps the exotic twisted $\mathbb T$-equivariant K-theory of $LZ$ into the exotic twisted $\mathbb T$-equivariant cohomology as defined in an earlier paper of ours, and which localises to twisted cohomology of $Z$.
We prove, under some mild conditions, that the equivariant twisted K-theory group of a crossed module admits a ring structure if the twisting 2-cocycle is 2-multiplicative. We also give an explicit construction of the transgression map $T_1: H^*(Γ;A) \to H^{*-1}((N\rtimes Γ;A)$ for any crossed module $N\to Γ$ and prove that any element in the image is $\infty$-multiplicative. As a consequence, we prove that, under some mild conditions, for a crossed module $N \to \gm$ and any $e \in \check{Z}^3(Γ;S^1)$, that the equivariant twisted K-theory group $K^*_{e,Γ}(N)$ admits a ring structure. As an a…
We propose Weil and Cartan models for the equivariant cohomology of noncommutative spaces which carry a covariant action of Drinfel'd twisted symmetries. The construction is suggested by the noncommutative Weil algebra of Alekseev and Meinrenken; we show that one can implement a Drinfel'd twist of their models in order to take into account the noncommutativity of the spaces we are acting on.
The charges of D-branes in Kazama-Suzuki coset models are analyzed. We provide the calculation of the corresponding twisted equivariant K-theory, and in the case of Grassmannian cosets, su(n+1)/u(n), compare this to the charge lattices that are derived from boundary conformal field theory.
We construct explicit BPS and non-BPS solutions of the Yang-Mills equations on the noncommutative space R^{2n}_θx S^2 which have manifest spherical symmetry. Using SU(2)-equivariant dimensional reduction techniques, we show that the solutions imply an equivalence between instantons on R^{2n}_θx S^2 and nonabelian vortices on R^{2n}_θ, which can be interpreted as a blowing-up of a chain of D0-branes on R^{2n}_θinto a chain of spherical D2-branes on R^{2n} x S^2. The low-energy dynamics of these configurations is described by a quiver gauge theory which can be formulated in terms of new geometri…
Freed-Hopkins-Teleman expressed the Verlinde algebra as twisted equivariant K-theory. We study how to recover the full system (fusion algebra of defect lines), nimrep (cylindrical partition function), etc of modular invariant partition functions of conformal field theories associated to loop groups. We work out several examples corresponding to conformal embeddings and orbifolds. We identify a new aspect of the A-D-E pattern of SU(2) modular invariants.
We show how general principles of symmetry in quantum mechanics lead to twisted notions of a group representation. This framework generalizes both the classical 3-fold way of real/complex/quaternionic representations as well as a corresponding 10-fold way which has appeared in condensed matter and nuclear physics. We establish a foundation for discussing continuous families of quantum systems. Having done so, topological phases of quantum systems can be defined as deformation classes of continuous families of gapped Hamiltonians. For free particles there is an additional algebraic structure on…
We demonstrate that twisted equivariant differential K-theory of transverse complex curves accommodates exotic charges of the form expected of codimension=2 defect branes, such as of D7-branes in IIB/F-theory on A-type orbifold singularities, but also of their dual 3-brane defects of class-S theories on M5-branes. These branes have been argued, within F-theory and the AGT correspondence, to carry special SL(2)-monodromy charges not seen for other branes, but none of these had previously been identified in the expected brane charge quantization law given by K-theory. Here we observe that it is …
We present an equivariant extension of the Thom form with respect to a vector field action, in the framework of the Mathai-Quillen formalism. The associated Topological Quantum Field Theories correspond to twisted $N=2$ supersymmetric theories with a central charge. We analyze in detail two different cases: topological sigma models and non-abelian monopoles on four-manifolds.
We compute genus-zero Gromov--Witten invariants of Calabi--Yau complete intersection 3-folds in Grassmannians using supersymmetric localization in A-twisted non-Abelian gauged linear sigma models. We also discuss a Seiberg-like duality interchanging Gr(n,m) and Gr(m-n,m).
In this paper we extend the nonabelian mirror proposal of two of the authors from two-dimensional gauge theories with connected gauge groups to the case of O(k) gauge groups with discrete theta angles. We check our proposed extension by counting and comparing vacua in mirrors to known dual two-dimensional (S)O(k) gauge theories. The mirrors in question are Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds, and for mirrors to O(k) gauge theories, the critical loci of the mirror superpotential often intersect fixed-point loci, so that to count vacua, one must take into account twisted sector contributions. This is a te…
In this paper we propose a systematic construction of mirrors of nonabelian two dimensional (2,2) supersymmetric gauge theories. Specifically, we propose a construction of B-twisted Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds whose correlation functions match those of A-twisted supersymmetric gauge theories, and whose critical loci reproduce quantum cohomology and Coulomb branch relations in A-twisted gauge theories, generalizing the Hori-Vafa mirror construction. We check this proposal in a wide variety of examples. For instance, we construct mirrors corresponding to Grassmannians and two-step flag manifolds, …
Let $G$ be a connected semisimple Lie group with its maximal compact subgroup $K$ being simply-connected. We show that the twisted equivariant $KK$-theory $KK^{\bullet}_{G}(G/K, τ_G^G)$ of $G$ has a ring structure induced from the renowned ring structure of the twisted equivariant $K$-theory $K^{\bullet}_{K}(K, τ_K^K)$ of a maximal compact subgroup $K$. We give a geometric description of representatives in $KK^{\bullet}_{G}(G/K, τ_G^G)$ in terms of equivalence classes of certain equivariant correspondences and obtain an optimal set of generators of this ring. We also establish various properti…
It has been argued by Witten and others that in the presence of a nontrivial B-field, D-brane charges in type IIB string theories are measured by twisted K-theory. In joint work with Bouwknegt, Carey and Murray it was proved that twisted K-theory is canonically isomorphic to bundle gerbe K-theory, whose elements are ordinary vector bundles on a principal projective unitary bundle, with an action of the bundle gerbe determined by the principal projective unitary bundle. The principal projective unitary bundle is in turn determined by the twist. In this paper, we study in more detail the Chern-W…
We begin by presenting a symmetric version of the circle equivariant T-duality result in a joint work of the second author with Siye Wu, thereby generalising the results there. We then initiate the study of twisted equivariant Courant algebroids and equivariant generalised geometry and apply it to our context. As before, T-duality exchanges type II A and type II B string theories. In our theory, both spacetime and the T-dual spacetime can be singular spaces when the fixed point set is non-empty; the singularities correspond to Kaluza-Klein monopoles. We propose that the Ramond-Ramond charges o…
In joint work with M. Hopkins and C. Teleman we find a new description of the Verlinde algebra associated to a compact Lie group. In this expository account we describe twisted K-theory, prove the theorem for the group SU(2), and motivate the general theorem using ideas in topological field theory. The full proof will appear elsewhere.
It has been shown recently by Kapustin and Tomasiello that the mathematical notion of Hamiltonian actions on twisted generalized Kähler manifolds is in perfect agreement with the physical notion of general $(2,2)$ gauged sigma models with three-form fluxes. In this article, we study the twisted equivariant cohomology theory of Hamiltonian actions on $H$-twisted generalized complex manifolds. If the manifold satisfies the $\bar{\partial}\partial$-lemma, we establish the equivariant formality theorem. If in addition, the manifold satisfies the generalized Kähler condition, we prove the Kirwan in…
This is the first in a series of papers investigating the relationship between the twisted equivariant K-theory of a compact Lie group G and the "Verlinde ring" of its loop group. In this paper we set up the foundations of twisted equivariant K-groups, and more generally twisted K-theory of groupoids. We establish enough basic properties to make effective computations. Using the Mayer-Vietoris spectral sequence we compute the twisted equivariant K-groups of a compact connected Lie group G with torsion free fundamental group. We relate this computation to the representation theory of the loop g…
In this paper, we study the perturbative aspects of the half-twisted variant of Witten's topological A-model coupled to a non-dynamical gauge field with Kahler target space X being a G-manifold. Our main objective is to furnish a purely physical interpretation of the equivariant cohomology of the chiral de Rham complex, recently constructed by Lian and Linshaw in [arXiv:math/0501084], called the "chiral equivariant cohomology". In doing so, one finds that key mathematical results such as the vanishing in the chiral equivariant cohomology of positive weight classes, lend themselves to straightf…
An invariant for twisted K theory classes on a 3-manifold is introduced. The invariant is then applied to the twisted equivariant classes arising from the supersymmetric Wess-Zumino-Witten model based on the group SU(2). It is shown that the classes defined by different highest weight representations of the loop group LSU(2) are inequivalent. The results are compatible with Freed-Hopkins-Teleman identification of twisted equivariant K theory as the Verlinde algebra.
In this paper we deduce the sketch of proof of the Duistermaat-Heckman formula and investigate how the known Duistermaat-Heckman result could be specialized to the symplectic structure on the orbit space. The theorems of localization in equivariant cohomology not only provide us with beautiful mathematical formulas and stimulate achievements in algorithmic computations, but also promote progress in theoretical and mathematical physics. We present the elliptic genera and the characteristic $q$-series for the circle actions and twisted equivariant K-theory, with the case of the symmetric group o…
It is found that the 2-index potential in nonabelian theories does not behave geometrically as a connection but that, considered as an element of the second de Rham cohomology group twisted by a flat connection, it fits well with all the properties assigned to it in various physical contexts. We also prove some results on the Euler characteristic of the twisted de Rham complex.
For a space X acted by a finite group $\G$, the product space $X^n$ affords a natural action of the wreath product $\Gn$. In this paper we study the K-groups $K_{\tG_n}(X^n)$ of $\Gn$-equivariant Clifford supermodules on $X^n$. We show that $\tFG =\bigoplus_{n\ge 0}K_{\tG_n}(X^n) \otimes \C$ is a Hopf algebra and it is isomorphic to the Fock space of a twisted Heisenberg algebra. Twisted vertex operators make a natural appearance. The algebraic structures on $\tFG$, when $\G$ is trivial and X is a point, specialize to those on a ring of symmetric functions with the Schur Q-functions as a linea…

Finally, provided that some conditions are satisfied, we propose a non-Abelian generalisation of S-duality.
In this paper we first consider the Hamiltonian action of a compact connected Lie group on an $H$-twisted generalized complex manifold $M$. Given such an action, we define generalized equivariant cohomology and generalized equivariant Dolbeault cohomology. If the generalized complex manifold $M$ satisfies the $\bar{\partial}\partial$-lemma, we prove that they are both canonically isomorphic to $(S\g^*)^G\otimes H_H(M)$, where $(S\g^*)^G$ is the space of invariant polynomials over the Lie algebra $\g$ of $G$, and $H_H(M)$ is the $H$-twisted cohomology of $M$. Furthermore, we establish an equiva…
We use equivariant methods to establish basic properties of orbifold K-theory. We introduce the notion of twisted orbifold K-theory in the presence of discrete torsion, and show how it can be explicitly computed for global quotients.
This is the second in a series of papers investigating the relationship between the twisted equivariant K-theory of a compact Lie group G and the "Verlinde ring" of its loop group. We introduce the Dirac family of Fredholm operators associated to a positive energy representation of a loop group. It determines a map from isomorphism classes of representations to twisted K-theory, which we prove is an isomorphism if $G$ is connected with torsion-free fundamental group. We also introduce a Dirac family for finite dimensional representations of compact Lie groups; it is closely related to both the…
We describe supersymmetric A-branes and B-branes in open N=(2,2) dynamically gauged nonlinear sigma models (GNLSM), placing emphasis on toric manifold target spaces. For a subset of toric manifolds, these equivariant branes have a mirror description as branes in gauged Landau-Ginzburg models with neutral matter. We then study correlation functions in the topological A-twisted version of the GNLSM, and identify their values with open Hamiltonian Gromov-Witten invariants. Supersymmetry breaking can occur in the A-twisted GNLSM due to nonperturbative open symplectic vortices, and we canonically B…
The most basic structure of chiral conformal field theory (CFT) is the Verlinde ring. Freed-Hopkins-Teleman have expressed the Verlinde ring for the CFT's associated to loop groups, as twisted equivariant K-theory. We build on their work to express K-theoretically the structures of full CFT. In particular, the modular invariant partition functions (which essentially parametrise the possible full CFTs) have a rich interpretation within von Neumann algebras (subfactors), which has led to the developments of structures of full CFT such as the full system (fusion ring of defect lines), nimrep (cyl…
We calculate partition function and correlation functions in A-twisted 2d $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ theories and topologically twisted 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories containing adjoint chiral multiplet with particular choices of $R$-charges and the magnetic fluxes for flavor symmetries. According to Gauge-Bethe correspondence, they correspond to Heisenberg XXX and XXZ spin chain models. We identify the partition function as the inverse of the norm of the Bethe eigenstates. Correlation functions are identified as the coefficients of the expectation value of Baxter $Q$-operators. In addition, we consider…
Short-range entangled topological phases of matter are closely connected to Topological Quantum Field Theory. We use this connection to classify bosonic Symmetry Protected Topological Phases in low dimensions, including the case when the symmetry involves time-reversal. To accomplish this, we generalize Turaev's description of equivariant TQFT to the unoriented case. We show that invertible unoriented equivariant TQFTs in one or less spatial dimensions are classified by twisted group cohomology, in agreement with the group cohomology proposal of Chen, Gu, Liu and Wen. We also show that inverti…
