Relying on the computation of the Andre-Quillen homology groups for unstable Hopf algebras, we prove that the mod p cohomology of the n-connected cover of a finite H-space is always finitely generated as algebra over the Steenrod algebra.
We compute the equivariant cohomology $H^*_{T_I}(\mathcal Z_K)$ of moment-angle complexes $\mathcal Z_K$ with respect to the action of coordinate subtori $T_I \subset T^m$. We give a criterion for the equivariant formality of $\mathcal Z_K$ and obtain specifications for the cases of flag complexes and graphs.
In this paper, we compute the homology coalgebra and cohomology algebra over a field of all generalized moment-angle complexes and give a duality theorem on complementary moment-angle complexes.
It is shown that the Mayer-Vietoris sequence holds for the cohomology of complexes of Lie algebroids which are defined on simplicial complexes and satisfy the compatibility condition concerning restrictions to the faces of each simplex. The Mayer-Vietoris sequence will be obtained as a consequence of the extension lemma for piecewise smooth forms defined on complexes of Lie algebroids.
This article shows several new methods for proofs on Kan complexes while using them to give a compact introduction to the homotopy groups of these complexes. Then more advanced objects are studied starting with homology and the Hurewicz homomorphism. Eilenberg-Mac Lane-spaces are constructed explicitly and can then be used to define spectral cohomology. In the end the equivalence to the usual simplicial cohomology is shown.
In this article, we study the cohomology ring of real moment-angle complexes over a simplicial complex $K$. Combinatorial generators for the cohomology can be given in terms of $K$. For $K$ the boundary of an $n$-gon, we give a full description of the multiplicative structure of the cohomology ring in terms of the combinatorial generators. As a consequence, it is evident that these generators do not form a symplectic basis, unlike the case for moment-angle complexes.
We use the Taylor resolution of a monomial ideal to compute the Tor algebra of the Stanley-Reisner ring of a simplicial complement of a simplicial complex.
The main goal of this article is to study the cohomology rings and their applications of moment-angle complexes associated to Gorenstein* complexes, especially, the applications in combinatorial commutative algebra and combinatorics. First, we give a topological characterization of Gorenstein* complexes in terms of Alexander duality (as an application we give a topological proof of Stanley's Theorem). Next we give some cohomological transformation formulae of $\mathcal {Z}_{K}$, which are induced by some combinatorial operations on the Gorenstein* complex $K$, such as the connected sum operati…
We study graph complexes related to configuration spaces and diffeomorphism groups of highly connected manifolds of odd dimension. In particular we compute the cohomology in the "high genus" limit. This paper is a continuation of previous work by Felder, Naef and the second author in which the even dimensional case is studied.
Let $C_2$ be the cyclic group of order two. We show that the $RO(C_2)$-graded Bredon cohomology of a finite Rep($C_2$)-complex is free as a module over the cohomology of a point when using coefficients in the constant Mackey functor $\underline{\mathbb{F}_2}$. This paper corrects some errors in Kronholm's proof of this freeness theorem. It also extends the freeness result to finite type complexes, those with finitely many cells of each fixed-set dimension. We give a counterexample showing the theorem does not hold for locally finite complexes.
We introduce a norm on the real 1-cohomology of finite 2-complexes determined by the Euler characteristics of graphs on these complexes. We also introduce twisted Alexander-Fox polynomials of groups and show that they give rise to norms on the real 1-cohomology of groups. Our main theorem states that for a finite 2-complex X, the norm on H^1(X; R) determined by graphs on X majorates the Alexander-Fox norms derived from π_1(X).
A simplicial complement P is a sequence of subsets of [m] and the simplicial complement P corresponds to a unique simplicial complex K with vertices in [m]. In this paper, we defined the homology of a simplicial complement $H_{i,σ}(Λ^{*,*}[P], d)$ over a principle ideal domain k and proved that $H_{*,*}(Λ[P], d)$ is isomorphic to the Tor of the corresponding face ring k(K) by the Taylor resolutions. As applications, we give methods to compute the ring structure of Tor_{*,*}^{k[x]}(k(K), k)$, $link_{K}σ$, $star_{K}σ$ and the cohomology of the generalized moment-angle complexes.
In this paper, we discuss the connected sum K_1#^Z K_2 of simplicial complexes K_1 and K_2, as well as define the notion of a strong connected sum. Geometrically, the connected sum is motivated by Lerman's symplectic cut applied to a toric orbifold, and algebraically, it is motivated by the connected sum of rings introduced by Ananthnarayan-Avramov-Moore. We show that the Stanley-Reisner ring of a connected sum K_1#^Z K_2 is the connected sum of the Stanley-Reisner rings of K_1 and K_2 along the Stanley-Reisner ring of the intersection of K_1 and K_2. The strong connected sum K_1 #^Z K_2 is de…
We prove sharper versions of theorems of Linial-Meshulam and Meshulam-Wallach which describe the behavior for (Z/2)-cohomology of a random k-dimensional simplicial complex within a narrow transition window. In particular, we show that within this window the (k-1)st Betti number is in the limit Poisson distributed. For k=2 we also prove that in an accompanying growth process, with high probability, first cohomology vanishes exactly at the moment when the last isolated (k-1)-simplex gets covered by a k-simplex.
We consider a multi-parameter model for randomly constructing simplicial complexes. This model interpolates between random clique complexes and Linial-Meshulam random $k$-dimensional complexes, two models that have been extensively studied. While these models asymptotically exhibit nontrivial cohomology in only one or two dimensions, we show that in this generalized setting nontrivial cohomology can occur in several dimensions simultaneously. We establish upper and lower thresholds for the appearance of nontrivial cohomology in a particular dimension, and in some instances characterize the beh…
We describe the cohomology of the quotient Z_K/H of a moment-angle complex Z_K by a freely acting subtorus H in T^m by establishing a ring isomorphism of H*(Z_K/H,R) with an appropriate Tor-algebra of the face ring R[K], with coefficients in an arbitrary commutative ring R with unit. This result was stated in [BP02, 7.37] for a field R, but the argument was not sufficiently detailed in the case of nontrivial H and finite characteristic. We prove the collapse of the corresponding Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence using the extended functoriality of Tor with respect to `strongly homotopy multipl…
If $G$ has $4$-periodic cohomology, then D2 complexes over $G$ are determined up to polarised homotopy by their Euler characteristic if and only if $G$ has at most two one-dimensional quaternionic representations. We use this to solve Wall's D2 problem for several infinite families of non-abelian groups and, in these cases, also show that any finite Poincaré $3$-complex $X$ with $π_1(X)=G$ admits a cell structure with a single $3$-cell. The proof involves cancellation theorems for $\mathbb{Z} G$ modules where $G$ has periodic cohomology.
The goal of this article is to make explicit a structured complex whose homology computes the cohomology of the p-profinite completion of the n-fold loop space of a sphere of dimension d=n-m<n. This complex is defined purely algebraically, in terms of characteristic structures of E_n-operads. Our construction involves: the free complete algebra in one variable associated to any E_n-operad; and an element in this free complete algebra, which is associated to a morphism from the operad of L-infinity algebras to an operadic suspension of our E_n-operad. We deduce our main theorem from: a connecti…
We compute the cohomology groups of the spaces of colorings of cycles, i.e., of the prodsimplicial complexes Hom(C_m,K_n). We perform the computation first with Z_2, and then with integer coefficients. The main technical tool is to use spectral sequences in conjunction with a detailed combinatorial analysis of a family of cubical complexes, which we call torus front complexes. As an application of our method, we demonstrate how to collapse each connected component of Hom(C_m,C_n) onto a garland of cubes.
We prove that the Bredon homology or cohomology of the partition complex with fairly general coefficients is either trivial or computable in terms of constructions with the Steinberg module. The argument involves developing a theory of Bredon homology and cohomology approximation.
There are two de Rham complexes in diffeology. The original one is due to Souriau and the other one is the singular de Rham complex defined by a simplicial differential graded algebra. We compare the first de Rham cohomology groups of the two complexes within the Čech--de Rham spectral sequence by making use of the {\it factor map} which connects the two de Rham complexes. As a consequence, it follows that the singular de Rham cohomology algebra of the irrational torus $T_θ$ is isomorphic to the tensor product of the original de Rham cohomology and the exterior algebra generated by a non-trivi…
Let $V$ be an elementary abelian $2$-group and $X$ be a finite $V$-CW-complex. In this memoir we study two cochain complexes of modules over the mod2 Steenrod algebra $\mathrm{A}$, equipped with an action of $\mathrm{H}^{*}V$, the mod2 cohomology of $V$, both associated with $X$. The first, which we call the "topological complex", is defined using the orbit filtration of $X$. The second, which we call the "algebraic complex", is defined just in terms of the unstable $\mathrm{A}$-module $\mathrm{H}^*_V X$, the mod2 equivariant cohomology of $X$. Our study makes intensive use of the theory of un…
We present a method to compute integral cohomology of posets. This toolbox is applicable as soon as the sub-posets under each object possess certain structure. This is the case for simplicial complexes and simplex-like posets. The method is based on homological algebra arguments in the category of functors and on a spectral sequence built upon the poset. We show its relation to discrete Morse theory. As application we give an alternative proof of Webb's conjecture for saturated fusion systems and we compute the cohomology of Coxeter complexes for finite and infinite Coxeter groups.
For every $k \ge 1$, the $k$th cohomology group $H^k(X, \Q)$ of the random flag complex $X \sim X(n,p)$ passes through two phase transitions: one where it appears, and one where it vanishes. We describe the vanishing threshold and show that it is sharp. Using the same spectral methods, we also find a sharp threshold for the fundamental group $π_1(X)$ to have Kazhdan's property (T). Combining with earlier results, we obtain as a corollary that for every $k \ge 3$ there is a regime in which the random flag complex is rationally homotopy equivalent to a bouquet of $k$-dimensional spheres.
We consider a non-standard totalisation functor to produce a cochain complex from a given double complex: instead of sums or products, totalisation is defined via truncated products of modules. We give an elementary proof of the fact that a double complex with exact rows (resp, columns) yields an acyclic cochain complex under totalisation using right (resp, left) truncated products. As an application we consider the algebraic mapping torus T(h) of a self map h of a cochain complex C. We show that if C consists of finitely presented modules then T(h) has trivial negative Novikov cohomology; if …
We propose a method for calculating cohomology operations for finite simplicial complexes. Of course, there exist well--known methods for computing (co)homology groups, for example, the reduction algorithm consisting in reducing the matrices corresponding to the differential in each dimension to the Smith normal form, from which one can read off (co)homology groups of the complex, or the incremental algorithm (due to Edelsbrunner et al.) for computing Betti numbers. However, there is a gap in the literature concerning general methods for computing cohomology operations. For a given finite simp…
In 1998, Goresky, Kottwitz, and MacPherson showed that for certain spaces X equipped with a torus action, the T-equivariant cohomology ring of X can be described by combinatorial data obtained from its orbit decomposition. Thus, their theory transforms calculations of the equivariant topology of X to those of the combinatorics of the orbit decomposition. Since then, many authors have studied this interplay between topology and combinatorics. In this paper, we generalize the theorem of Goresky, Kottwitz, and MacPherson to the (possibly infinite-dimensional) setting where X is any equivariant ce…
In this paper, we establish the rationality conjecture raised in \cite{FKS} for any $(r-1)$-connected ($r\geq 2$) $kr$-dimensional CW-complex $X$ ($k\geq 2$) having a unique spherical cohomology class $u\in \tilde{H}^r(X, \mathbb{Z})$ such that $u^k\not =0$. %which is nilpotent with order of nilpotency equal to $k+1$. Next, we illustrate (topologically) our result by giving the minimal cell structure of such a CW-complex whose cohomology is a truncated polynomial algebra.
Let Z_K be the moment angle complex associated to a simplicial complex K, with the canonical torus T-action. In this paper, we prove that, for any possibly disconnected subgroup G of T, G-equivariant cohomology of Z_K over the integer Z is isomophic to the Tor-module Tor_{H(BR;Z)}(Z[K],Z) as graded modules, where Z_[K] is the Stanley-Reisner ring of K. Based on this, we prove that the surjectivity of the natural map H_T(Z_K;Z) to H_G(Z_K;Z) is equivalent to the vanishing of Tor^{H(BR;Z)}_1(Z[K],Z). Since the integral cohomology of various toric orbifolds can be identified with H_G(Z_K;Z), we s…
For the model two-complex $K$ of the group presentation $\mathcal{P}=\langle x,y\,|\,x^{k+1}yxy \rangle$, with $k\geq1$ odd, we describe representatives for all free and based homotopy classes of maps from $K$ into the real projective plane and we classify the homotopy classes containing only surjective maps. With this approach we get an answer, for maps into the real projective plane, for a classical question in topological root theory, which is known so far, in dimension two, only for maps into the sphere, the torus and the Klein bottle. The answer follows by proving that for all $k\geq1$ od…
Any finite simplicial complex K and a partition of the vertex set of K determines a canonical quotient space of the moment-angle complex of K. We prove that the cohomology groups of such a space can be computed via some Hochster's type formula, which generalizes the usual Hochster's formula for the cohomology groups of moment-angle complexes. In addition, we show that the stable decomposition of moment-angle complexes can also be extended to such spaces. This type of spaces include all the quasitoric manifolds that are pullback from the linear models. And we prove that the moment-angle complex…
We present an obstruction theoretic inductive construction of intersection space pairs, which generalizes Banagl's construction of intersection spaces for arbitrary depth stratifications. We construct intersection space pairs for pseudomanifolds with compatible trivial structures at the link fibrations; this includes the case of toric varieties. We define intersection space complexes in an axiomatic way, similar to Goresky-McPherson axioms for intersection cohomology. We prove that if the intersection space exists, then the pseudomanifold has an intersection space complex whose hypercohomology…
Given a finite and connected two-dimensional $CW$-complex $K$ with fundamental group $Π$ and second integer cohomology group $H^2(K;\mathbb{Z})$ finite of odd order, we prove that: (1) for each local integer coefficient system $α:Π\to{\rm Aut}(\mathbb{Z})$ over $K$, the corresponding twisted cohomology group $H^2(K;_α\!\mathbb{Z})$ is finite of odd order, we say order $\mathbb{C}^{\ast}(α)$, and there exists a natural function -- which resemble that one defined by the twisted degree -- from the set $[K;\mathbb{R}P^2]_α^{\ast}$ of the based homotopy classes of based maps inducing $α$ on $π_1$ i…
We study the topology of a space parametrizing stable tropical curves of genus g with volume 1, showing that its reduced rational homology is canonically identified with both the top weight cohomology of M_g and also with the genus g part of the homology of Kontsevich's graph complex. Using a theorem of Willwacher relating this graph complex to the Grothendieck-Teichmueller Lie algebra, we deduce that H^{4g-6}(M_g;Q) is nonzero for g=3, g=5, and g at least 7. This disproves a recent conjecture of Church, Farb, and Putman as well as an older, more general conjecture of Kontsevich. We also give …
We define the Coxeter cochain complex of a Coxeter group (G,S) with coefficients in a Z[G]-module A. This is closely related to the complex of simplicial cochains on the abstract simplicial complex I(S) of the commuting subsets of S. We give some representative computations of Coxeter cohomology and explain the connection between the Coxeter cohomology for groups of type A, the (singular) homology of certain configuration spaces, and the (Tor) homology of certain local Artin rings.
In this paper it is shown that the RO(Z/2)-graded cohomology of a certain class of Rep(Z/2)-complexes, which includes projective spaces and Grassmann manifolds, is always free as a module over the cohomology of a point when the coefficient Mackey functor is \underline{Z/2}.
We show that the vanishing of certain cohomology groups of polyhedral complexes imply upper bounds on Ramsey numbers. Lovasz bounded the chromatic numbers of graphs using Hom complexes. Babson and Kozlov proved Lovasz conjecture and developed a Hom complex theory. We generalize the Hom complexes to Ramsey complexes. The main theorem states that if certain cohomology groups of the Ramsey complex Ram(dDelta_{p^k}, Sigma) are trivial, then the vertices of the simplicial complex Sigma cannot be n-colored such that every color correspond to a face of Sigma. In a corollary, we give an explicit descr…
This paper introduces a chain model for the Deligne-Mumford operad formed by homotopically trivializing the circle in a chain model for the framed little disks. We then show that under degeneration of the Hochschild to cyclic cohomology spectral sequence, a known action of the framed little disks on Hochschild cochains lifts to an action of this new chain model. We thus establish homotopy hyper-commutative algebra structures on both Hochschild and cyclic cochain complexes, and we interpret the gravity brackets on cyclic cohomology as obstructions to degeneration of this spectral sequence. Our …
For a discrete group G, we represent the Bredon cohomology with local coefficients as the homotopy classes of maps in the category of equivaraint crossed complexes. Subsequently, we construct a naive parametrized G-spectrum, such that the cohomology theory defined by it reduces to the Bredon cohomology with local coefficients when restricted to suspension spectra.
We study the cohomology theory of sheaf complexes for open embeddings of topological spaces and related subjects. The theory is situated in the intersection of the general Cech theory and the theory of derived categories. That is to say, on the one hand the cohomology is described as the relative cohomology of the sections of the sheaf complex, which appears naturally in the theory of Cech cohomology of sheaf complexes. On the other hand it is interpreted as the cohomology of a complex dual to the mapping cone of a certain morphism of complexes in the theory of derived categories. We prove a "…
We study simplicial action of groups on one vertex Kan complexes. We show that every semi-direct product of the fundamental group of an one vertex Kan complex with a finite group can be simplicially realized. We also calculate the cohomology of the fixed point set of a finite $p-$group action on an one vertex aspherical Kan complex.
The structure of the BP<n>-cohomology of elementary abelian p-groups is studied, obtaining a presentation expressed in terms of BP-cohomology and mod-p singular cohomology, using the Milnor derivations. The arguments are based on a result on multi-Koszul complexes which is related to Margolis's criterion for freeness of a graded module over an exterior algebra.
We describe a "cellular" approach to the computation of the cohomology of a poset with coefficients in a presheaf. A cellular cochain complex is constructed, described explicitly and shown to compute the cohomology under certain circumstances. The descriptions are refined further for certain classes of posets including the cell posets of regular CW-complexes and geometric lattices.
Let $n \geq 1$ be an integer, let $V=(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})^{n}$ and let $X$ be a $V$-CW-complex. If $X$ is a finite $CW$-complexe, the equivariant modulo $2$ cohomology of the $V$-CW-complexe $X$, denoted by $H_{V}^{*}(X, \mathbb{F}_{2})$, is a finite type module over the modulo $2$ cohomology of the group $V$, denoted by $H^{*}(V, \mathbb{F}_{2})$. Let $dth_{H^{*}V}H_{V}^{*}(X, \mathbb{F}_{2})$ be the depth of the finite type $H^{*}(V, \mathbb{F}_{2})$-module $H_{V}^{*}(X, \mathbb{F}_{2})$ relatively to the augmentation ideal, $\widetilde{H^{*}}(V, \mathbb{F}_{2})$, of $H^*(V, \mathbb{F}_{…
We use rational formality of configuration spaces and the bar construction to study the cohomology of the space of braids in dimension four or greater. We provide a diagram complex for braids and a quasi-isomorphism to the de Rham cochains on the space of braids. The quasi-isomorphism is given by a configuration space integral followed by Chen's iterated integrals. This extends results of Kohno and of Cohen and Gitler on the cohomology of the space of braids to a CDGA suitable for integration. We show that this integration is compatible with Bott-Taubes configuration space integrals for long l…
We describe a vanishing result on the cohomology of a cochain complex associated to the moduli of chains of finite subgroup schemes on elliptic curves. These results have applications to algebraic topology, in particular to the study of power operations for Morava E-theory at height 2.
