We develop model categories of rational equivariant spectra whose homotopy categories are equivalent to the category of rational equivariant cohomology theories. We prove that given an orthogonal decomposition of the unit in the rational Burnside ring, the model category of rational equivariant spectra decomposes into a product of localisations. We use this result to reprove the classification of rational equivariant cohomology theories for finite groups and to study such cohomology theories for the group O(2). We then concentrate on a split piece of the O(2) case and relate it to rational SO(2) equivariant spectra.
We find a simple algebraic model for rational G-equivariant spectra, where G is the p-adic integers, via a series of Quillen equivalences. This model, along with an Adams short exact sequence, will allow us to easily perform constructions and calculations.
We give details of models for rational torus equivariant homotopy theory based on (a) all subgroups, connected subgroups or dimensions of subgroups and (b) on pairs or general flags. We provide comparison functors and show the models are equivalent. This is used in (A) An algebraic model for rational torus equivariant spectra (with B.Shipley; the new version of 1101.2511), (B) An algebraic model for the toral part of rational equivariant G-spectra for an arbitrary compact Lie group (1501.03425) and (C) construction of torus equivariant spectra from algebraic geometric data. It also highlights …
The circle-equivariant spectrum MString_C is the equivariant analogue of the cobordism spectrum MU<6> of stably almost complex manifolds with c_1=c_2=0. Given a rational elliptic curve C, the second author has defined a ring T-spectrum EC representing the associated T-equivariant elliptic cohomology. The core of the present paper is the construction, when C is a complex elliptic curve, of a map of ring T-spectra MString_C --> EC which is the rational equivariant analogue of the sigma orientation of Ando-Hopkins-Strickland. We support this by a theory of characteristic classes for calculation, …
We prove that if G is the circle group or a profinite group, then the all of the homotopical information of the category of rational G-spectra is captured by triangulated structure of the rational G-equivariant stable homotopy category. That is, for G profinite or S1, the rational G-equivariant stable homotopy category is rigid. For the case of profinite groups this rigidity comes from an intrinsic formality statement, so we carefully relate the notion of intrinsic formality of a differential graded algebra to rigidity.
We classify thick tensor ideals of finite objects in the category of rational torus-equivariant spectra, showing that they are completely determined by geometric isotropy. This is essentially equivalent to showing that the Balmer spectrum is the set of closed subgroups under cotoral inclusion. Corresponding statements are deduced for toral spectra for general groups.
We give minimal presentations for the $RO(C_2)$-graded Bredon cohomology of the equivariant classifying spaces $B_{C_2}U(n), B_{C_2}SO(n)$ and $B_{C_2}Sp(n)$ with coefficients in the rational Burnside Green functor $A_{\mathbf Q}$. This results in an efficient description of rational $C_2$ equivariant Chern, Pontryagin and symplectic characteristic classes. These classes are then related to each other using the inclusions of maximal tori.
We prove that the category of rational SO(2)-equivariant spectra has a simple algebraic model. Furthermore, all of our model categories and Quillen equivalences are monoidal, so we can use this classification to understand ring spectra and module spectra via the algebraic model.
In this paper, we calculate the image of the connective and periodic rational equivariant complex $K$-theory spectrum in the algebraic model for naive-commutative ring $G$-spectra given by Barnes, Greenlees and Kędziorek for finite abelian $G$. Our calculations show that these spectra are unique as naive-commutative ring spectra in the sense that they are determined up to weak equivalence by their homotopy groups. We further deduce a structure theorem for module spectra over rational equivariant complex $K$-theory.
The category of rational O(2)-equivariant cohomology theories has an algebraic model A(O(2)), as established by work of Greenlees. That is, there is an equivalence of categories between the homotopy category of rational O(2)-equivariant spectra and the derived category of the abelian model DA(O(2)). In this paper we lift this equivalence of homotopy categories to the level of Quillen equivalences of model categories. This Quillen equivalence is also compatible with the Adams short exact sequence of the algebraic model.
We provide a calculational method for rational stable equivariant homotopy theory for a torus G based on the homology of the Borel construction on fixed points. More precisely we define an abelian torsion model, A_t(G) of finite injective dimension, a homology theory \piAt_* taking values in A_t(G) based on the homology of the Borel construction, and a finite Adams spectral sequence Ext_{A_t(G)}^{*,*}(\piAt_*(X), \piAt_*(Y)) ==> [X,Y]^G_* for rational G-spectra X and Y.
In this paper, we build on the work from our previous paper (arXiv:2002.01556) to show that periodic rational $G$-equivariant topological $K$-theory has a unique genuine-commutative ring structure for $G$ a finite abelian group. This means that every genuine-commutative ring spectrum whose homotopy groups are those of $KU_{\mathbb{Q},G}$ is weakly equivalent, as a genuine-commutative ring spectrum, to $KU_{\mathbb{Q},G}$. In contrast, the connective rational equivariant $K$-theory spectrum does not have this type of uniqueness of genuine-commutative ring structure.
Equipping a non-equivariant topological E_\infty operad with the trivial G-action gives an operad in G-spaces. The algebra structure encoded by this operad in G-spectra is characterised homotopically by having no non-trivial multiplicative norms. Algebras over this operad are called naive-commutative ring G-spectra. In this paper we let G be a finite group and we show that commutative algebras in the algebraic model for rational G-spectra model the rational naive-commutative ring G-spectra.
In this short note, we compute the rational $C_{2^n}$-equivariant stable stems and give minimal presentations for the $RO(C_{2^n})$-graded Bredon cohomology of the equivariant classifying spaces $B_{C_{2^n}}S^1$ and $B_{C_{2^n}}Σ_2$ over the rational Burnside functor $A_{\mathbf Q}$. We also examine for which compact Lie groups $L$ the maximal torus inclusion $T\to L$ induces an isomorphism from $H^*_{C_{2^n}}(B_{C_{2^n}}L;A_{\mathbf Q})$ onto the fixed points of $H^*_{C_{2^n}}(B_{C_{2^n}}T;A_{\mathbf Q})$ under the Weyl group action. We prove that this holds for $L=U(m)$ and any $n,m\ge 1$ bu…
Equipping a non-equivariant topological $E_\infty$-operad with the trivial $G$-action gives an operad in $G$-spaces. For a $G$-spectrum, being an algebra over this operad does not provide any multiplicative norm maps on homotopy groups. Algebras over this operad are called naïve-commutative ring $G$-spectra. In this paper we take $G=SO(2)$ and we show that commutative algebras in the algebraic model for rational $SO(2)$-spectra model rational naïve-commutative ring $SO(2)$-spectra. In particular, this applies to show that the $SO(2)$-equivariant cohomology associated to an elliptic curve $C$ f…
The category of rational G-equivariant cohomology theories for a compact Lie group $G$ is the homotopy category of rational G-spectra and therefore tensor-triangulated. We show that its Balmer spectrum is the set of conjugacy classes of closed subgroups of $G$, with the topology corresponding to the topological poset introduced in the author's study of rational Mackey functors. This is used to classify the collections of subgroups arising as the geometric isotropy of finite $G$-spectra. The ingredients for this classification are (i) the algebraic model of free spectra of the author and B.Ship…
For an arbitrary compact Lie group G, we describe a model for rational G-spectra with toral geometric isotropy and show that there is a convergent Adams spectral sequence based on it. The contribution from geometric isotropy at a subgroup K of the maximal torus of G is captured by a module over H^*(BW_G(K)_e) with an action of π_0(W_G(K)), where W_G(K)=N_G(K)/K and the subscript e denotes the identity component.
In previous work it is shown that there is an abelian category A(G) constructed to model rational G-equivariant cohomology theories, where G is a torus of rank r together with a homology functor \piA_* : Gspectra ---> A(G), and an Adams spectral sequence Ext_{A (G)} (\piA_*(X), \piA_*(Y)) ===> [X,Y]^G_* In joint work with Shipley (arxiv:1101.2511), it is shown that the Adams spectral sequence can be lifted to a Quillen equivalence Rational-Gspectra = DG-A (G). The purpose of the present paper is to prove that A(G) has injective dimension precisely r, and to construct certain torsion functors a…
We show that the category of rational G-spectra for a torus G is Quillen equivalent to an explicit small and practical algebraic model, thereby providing a universal de Rham model for rational G-equivariant cohomology theories. The result builds on the first author's Adams spectral sequence, the second author's functors making rational spectra algebraic. There are several steps, some perhaps of wider interest (1) isotropy separation (replacing the category of G-spectra by modules over a diagram of isotropically simple ring G-spectra) (2) passage to fixed points on ring and module categories (r…
We describe the equivariant cohomology ring of rationally smooth projective embeddings of reductive groups. These embeddings are the projectivizations of reductive monoids. Our main result describes their equivariant cohomology in terms of roots, idempotents, and underlying monoid data. Also, we characterize those embeddings whose equivariant cohomology ring is obtained via restriction to the associated toric variety. Such characterization is given in terms of the closed orbits.
Free and cofree equivariant spectra are important classes of equivariant spectra which represent equivariant cohomology theories on free equivariant spaces. Greenlees-Shipley and Pol and the author have given an algebraic model for rational (co)free equivariant spectra. In this paper, we extend this framework by proving that the Quillen functors of induction-restriction-coinduction between categories of (co)free rational equivariant spectra correspond to Quillen functors between the algebraic models in the case of connected compact Lie groups. This is achieved using new abstract techniques reg…
We identify the group of homomorphisms $\operatorname{Hom}_{\mathcal{GF}}(F,\mathbf{RU}_{\mathbb Q})$ in the category of ($\operatorname{fin}$)-global functors to the rationalization of the unitary representation ring functor and deduce that the higher $\operatorname{Ext}$-groups $\operatorname{Ext}^n_{\mathcal{GF}}(F,\mathbf{RU}_{\mathbb Q})$, $n\geq 2$ have to vanish. This leads to a rational splitting of the ($\operatorname{fin}$)-global equivariant $K$-theory spectrum into a sum of Eilenberg-MacLane spectra. Interpreted in terms of cohomology theories, it means that the equivariant Chern c…
We give Leray-Borel-type descriptions for the mod-$2$ and the rational equivariant cohomology rings of the real and the oriented flag manifolds under the canonical torus or 2-torus actions.
We prove a Poincare-Alexander-Lefschetz duality theorem for rational torus-equivariant cohomology and rational homology manifolds. We allow non-compact and non-orientable spaces. We use this to deduce certain short exact sequences in equivariant cohomology, originally due to Duflot in the differentiable case, from similar, but more general short exact sequences in equivariant homology. A crucial role is played by the Cohen-Macaulayness of relative equivariant cohomology modules arising from the orbit filtration.
We provide a notion of algebraic rational cell with applications to intersection theory on singular varieties with torus action. Based on this notion, we study the algebraic analogue of $\mathbb{Q}$-filtrable varieties: algebraic varieties where a torus acts with isolated fixed points, such that the associated Bialynicki-Birula decomposition consists of algebraic rational cells. We show that the rational equivariant Chow group of any $\mathbb{Q}$-filtrable variety is freely generated by the cell closures. We apply this result to group embeddings, and more generally to spherical varieties. This…
We consider the Quillen adjunction between fixed points and inflation in the context of equivariant module spectra over equivariant ring spectra, and give numerous examples including some based on geometric fixed points and some on the Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence. These results were originally presented as part of our equivalence between rational torus-equivariant spectra and an algebraic model in arXiv:1101.2511. However, the present results apply in many other interesting cases explored here, which are not rational and where the ambient group is not a torus. The material in arXiv:1101.…
We consider groups G which have a cocompact, 3-manifold model for the classifying space \underline{E}G. We provide an algorithm for computing the rationalized equivariant K-homology of \underline{E}G. Under the additional hypothesis that the quotient 3-orbifold \underline{E}G/G is geometrizable, the rationalized K-homology groups coincide with the rationalized K-theory of the reduced C*-algebra of G. We illustrate our algorithm on some concrete examples.
Shipley and the author have given an algebraic model for free rational G-spectra for a compact Lie group G. In the present note we describe, at the level of homotopy categories, the algebraic models for induction, restriction and coinduction relating free rational G-spectra and free rational H-spectra for a subgroup H of G. The justification for giving this short and elementary account is (1) the author found it difficult to guess the correct answer, (2) the answer depends on which Quillen equivalence is used between topology and algebra and (3) this has provided useful insight in several othe…
Bredon cohomology is a cohomology theory that applies to topological spaces equipped with the group actions. For any group G, given a real linear representation V , the configuration space of V has a natural diagonal G-action. In the paper we study this group action on the configuration space and give a decomposition of the homology Bredon coefficient system of the configuration space and apply this to compute rational Bredon cohomology of the configuration space for small nonabelian group G.
For a compact Lie group G, we use G-equivariant Poincaré duality for ordinary RO(G)-graded homology to define an equivariant intersection product, the dual of the equivariant cup product. Using this, we give a homological construction of the equivariant Lefschetz number and a simple proof of the equivariant Lefschetz fixed point theorem. With similar techniques, an equivariant Fuller index with values in the rationalized Burnside ring is constructed.
Let $G$ be a finite group. We re-analyze the splitting of rational $G$-spectra, which is discussed in Barne's thesis and traces back to Greenlees and May. We will study how the splitting behaves under a localization which is weaker than rationalization and discuss its application in computing equivariant cohomology of $G$-spectra. In particular, we will explicitly compute $π_\bigstar(H\underline{\mathbb{Z}})$ and $π_\bigstar(HA_G)$ for the dihedral group $G=D_{2p}$. The additive structures and partial multiplicative structures are already computed by Kriz, Lu, and Zou. Our new method will prov…
Let $T$ be a compact torus. We prove that, up to equivariant rational equivalence, the category of $T$-simply connected, $T$-finite type $T$-spaces with finitely many isotropy types is completely described by certain finite systems of commutative differential graded algebras with consistent choices of degree $2$ cohomology classes. We show that the algebraic systems corresponding to finite $T$-CW-complexes are exactly those which satisfy the necessary condition imposed by the Borel localization theorem along with certain finiteness conditions. We derive an algebraic characterization of when an…
We compute rational $T$-equivariant elliptic cohomology of CP(V), where $T$ is the circle group, and CP(V) is the $T$-space of complex lines for a finite dimensional complex $T$-representation V. Starting from an elliptic curve C over the complex numbers and a coordinate data around the identity, we achieve this computation by proving that the $T$-equivariant elliptic cohomology theory $EC_T$ built in [Gre05], and the $T^2$-equivariant elliptic cohomology theory $EC_{T^2}$ built in [Bar22] are 1x$T$-split. This result allows us to reduce the computation of $EC_T(CP(V))$ to the computation of $…
It is well known that very special $Γ$-spaces and grouplike $\E_\infty$ spaces both model connective spectra. Both these models have equivariant analogues. Shimakawa defined the category of equivariant $Γ$-spaces and showed that special equivariant $Γ$-spaces determine positive equivariant spectra. Costenoble and Waner showed that grouplike equivariant $\E_\infty$-spaces determine connective equivariant spectra. We show that with suitable model category structures the category of equivariant $Γ$-spaces is Quillen equivalent to the category of equivariant $\E_\infty$ spaces. We define the units…
We state the generating hypothesis in the homotopy category of G-spectra for a compact Lie group G, and prove that if G is finite, then the generating hypothesis implies the strong generating hypothesis, just as in the non-equivariant case. We also give an explicit counterexample to the generating hypothesis in the category of rational S^1-equivariant spectra.
We construct a rational $T^2$-equivariant elliptic cohomology theory for the 2-torus $T^2$, starting from an elliptic curve C over the complex numbers and a coordinate data around the identity. The theory is defined by constructing an object $EC_{T^2}$ in the algebraic model category $dA(T^2)$, which by Greenlees and Shipley is Quillen-equivalent to rational $T^2$-spectra. This result is a generalization to the 2-torus of the construction [Gre05] for the circle. The object $EC_{T^2}$ is directly built using geometric inputs coming from the Cousin complex of the structure sheaf of the surface C…
We consider twisted equivariant K--theory for actions of a compact Lie group $G$ on a space $X$ where all the isotropy subgroups are connected and of maximal rank. We show that the associated rational spectral sequence à la Segal has a simple $E_2$--term expressible as invariants under the Weyl group of $G$. Namely, if $T$ is a maximal torus of $G$, they are invariants of the $π_1(X^T)$-equivariant Bredon cohomology of the universal cover of $X^T$ with suitable coefficients. In the case of the inertia stack $ΛY$ this term can be expressed using the cohomology of $Y^T$ and algebraic invariants …
We describe the multiplicative structures that arise on categories of equivariant modules over certain equivariant commutative ring spectra. Building on our previous work on N-infinity ring spectra, we construct categories of equivariant operadic modules over N-infinity rings that are structured by equivariant linear isometries operads. These categories of modules are endowed with equivariant symmetric monoidal structures, which amounts to the structure of an "incomplete Mackey functor in homotopical categories". In particular, we construct internal norms which satisfy the double coset formula…
Compact symmetric spaces are probably one of the most prominent class of formal spaces, i.e. of spaces where the rational homotopy type is a formal consequence of the rational cohomology algebra. As a generalisation, it is even known that their isotropy action is equivariantly formal. In this article we show that $(\mathbb{Z}_2\oplus \mathbb{Z}_2)$-symmetric spaces are equivariantly formal and formal in the sense of Sullivan, in particular. Moreover, we give a short alternative proof of equivariant formality in the case of symmetric spaces with our new approach.
The category of rational SO(2)-equivariant spectra admits an algebraic model. That is, there is an abelian category A(SO(2)) whose derived category is equivalent to the homotopy category of rational SO(2)-equivariant spectra. An important question is: does this algebraic model capture the smash product of spectra? The category A(SO(2)) is known as Greenlees' standard model, it is an abelian category that has no projective objects and is constructed from modules over a non-Noetherian ring. Hence the standard techniques for constructing a monoidal model structure cannot be applied. In this paper…
We prove that the $G$-equivariant mod $p$ Eilenberg--MacLane spectrum arises as an equivariant Thom spectrum for any finite, $p$-power cyclic group $G$, generalizing a result of Behrens and the second author in the case of the group $C_2$. We also establish a construction of $\mathrm{H}\underline{\mathbb{Z}}_{(p)}$, and prove intermediate results that may be of independent interest. Highlights include constraints on the Hurewicz images of equivariant spectra that admit norms, and an analysis of the extent to which the non-equivariant $\mathrm{H}\mathbb{F}_p$ arises as the Thom spectrum of a mo…
The note identifies which which couniversal spaces have suspension spectra equivalent to commutative orthogonal ring G-spectra for a compact Lie group G. These are precisely those whose cofamily is closed under passage to finite index subgroups. Equivalently these are the couniversal spaces admitting an action of an equivariant E infinity operad.
