In this paper, we calculate the image of the connective and periodic rational equivariant complex $K$-theory spectrum in the algebraic model for naive-commutative ring $G$-spectra given by Barnes, Greenlees and Kędziorek for finite abelian $G$. Our calculations show that these spectra are unique as naive-commutative ring spectra in the sense that they are determined up to weak equivalence by their homotopy groups. We further deduce a structure theorem for module spectra over rational equivariant complex $K$-theory.
The note identifies which which couniversal spaces have suspension spectra equivalent to commutative orthogonal ring G-spectra for a compact Lie group G. These are precisely those whose cofamily is closed under passage to finite index subgroups. Equivalently these are the couniversal spaces admitting an action of an equivariant E infinity operad.
Equipping a non-equivariant topological E_\infty operad with the trivial G-action gives an operad in G-spaces. The algebra structure encoded by this operad in G-spectra is characterised homotopically by having no non-trivial multiplicative norms. Algebras over this operad are called naive-commutative ring G-spectra. In this paper we let G be a finite group and we show that commutative algebras in the algebraic model for rational G-spectra model the rational naive-commutative ring G-spectra.
In this paper, we build on the work from our previous paper (arXiv:2002.01556) to show that periodic rational $G$-equivariant topological $K$-theory has a unique genuine-commutative ring structure for $G$ a finite abelian group. This means that every genuine-commutative ring spectrum whose homotopy groups are those of $KU_{\mathbb{Q},G}$ is weakly equivalent, as a genuine-commutative ring spectrum, to $KU_{\mathbb{Q},G}$. In contrast, the connective rational equivariant $K$-theory spectrum does not have this type of uniqueness of genuine-commutative ring structure.
We use geometric fixed points to describe the homotopy theory of genuine equivariant commutative ring spectra after inverting the group order. The main innovation is the use of the extra structure provided by the Hill-Hopkins-Ravenel norms in the form of additional norm maps on geometric fixed point diagrams, which turns out to be computationally managable.
We describe the multiplicative structures that arise on categories of equivariant modules over certain equivariant commutative ring spectra. Building on our previous work on N-infinity ring spectra, we construct categories of equivariant operadic modules over N-infinity rings that are structured by equivariant linear isometries operads. These categories of modules are endowed with equivariant symmetric monoidal structures, which amounts to the structure of an "incomplete Mackey functor in homotopical categories". In particular, we construct internal norms which satisfy the double coset formula…
Equipping a non-equivariant topological $E_\infty$-operad with the trivial $G$-action gives an operad in $G$-spaces. For a $G$-spectrum, being an algebra over this operad does not provide any multiplicative norm maps on homotopy groups. Algebras over this operad are called naïve-commutative ring $G$-spectra. In this paper we take $G=SO(2)$ and we show that commutative algebras in the algebraic model for rational $SO(2)$-spectra model rational naïve-commutative ring $SO(2)$-spectra. In particular, this applies to show that the $SO(2)$-equivariant cohomology associated to an elliptic curve $C$ f…
This paper describes an issue that arises when inverting elements of the homotopy groups of an equivariant commutative ring. Equivariant commutative rings possess an enhanced multiplicative structure arising from the presence of "indexed products" (products indexed by a set with a non-trivial action of the group). The formation of the "multiplicative closure" of a set must be altered in order to accomodate this structure, and the result of localizing an equivariant commutative ring can have an unexpected homotopy type.
We study homotopy-coherent commutative multiplicative structures on equivariant spaces and spectra. We define N-infinity operads, equivariant generalizations of E-infinity operads. Algebras in equivariant spectra over an N-infinity operad model homotopically commutative equivariant ring spectra that only admit certain collections of Hill-Hopkins-Ravenel norms, determined by the operad. Analogously, algebras in equivariant spaces over an N-infinity operad provide explicit constructions of certain transfers. This characterization yields a conceptual explanation of the structure of equivariant in…
Building on structure observed in equivariant homotopy theory, we define an equivariant generalization of a symmetric monoidal category: a $G$-symmetric monoidal category. These record not only the symmetric monoidal products but also symmetric monoidal powers indexed by arbitrary finite $G$-sets. We then define $G$-commutative monoids to be the natural extension of ordinary commutative monoids to this new context. Using this machinery, we then describe when Bousfield localization in equivariant spectra preserves certain operadic algebra structures, and we explore the consequences of our defin…
We provide foundations for dealing with the equivariant structure of "smash powers" of commutative orthogonal ring spectra. The category of commutative orthogonal ring spectra $A$ is tensored over spaces $X$, so that $A \otimes X$ is a commutative orthogonal ring spectrum. If $X$ is a discrete space, this is literally the smash power of $A$ with itself indexed over $X$, and we keep this language also in the nondiscrete case. In particular $A \otimes S^1$ is a model for topological Hochschild homology. We provide a framework where a generalization of the cyclotomic structure of topological Hoch…
In this paper, we study the extent to which Bousfield and finite localizations relative to a thick subcategory of equivariant finite spectra preserve various kinds of highly structured multiplications. Along the way, we describe some basic, useful results for analyzing categories of acyclics in equivariant spectra, and we show that Bousfield localization with respect to an ordinary spectrum (viewed as an equivariant spectrum with trivial action) always preserves equivariant commutative ring spectra.
We restrict geometric tangential equivariant complex $T^n$-bordism to torus manifolds and provide a complete combinatorial description of the appropriate non-commutative ring. We discover, using equivariant $K$-theory characteristic numbers, that the information encoded in the oriented torus graph associated to a stably complex torus manifold completely describes its equivariant bordism class. We also consider the role of omnioriented quasitoric manifolds in this description.
This paper generalizes a result of Lynn on the "degree" of an equivariant cohomology ring $H^*_G(X)$. The degree of a graded module is a certain coefficient of its Poincaré series, and is closely related to multiplicity. In the present paper, we study these commutative algebraic invariants for equivariant cohomology rings. The main theorem is an additivity formula for degree: $$deg(H^*_G(X)) = \sum_{[A,c] \in \mathcal{Q'}_{max}(G,X)}\frac{1}{|W_G(A,c)|} °(H^*_{C_G(A,c)}(c)).$$ We also show how this formula relates to the additivity formula from commutative algebra, demonstrating both the algeb…
For all subgroups $H$ of a cyclic $p$-group $G$ we define norm functors that build a $G$-Mackey functor from an $H$-Mackey functor. We give an explicit construction of these functors in terms of generators and relations based solely on the intrinsic, algebraic properties of Mackey functors and Tambara functors. We use these norm functors to define a monoidal structure on the category of Mackey functors where Tambara functors are the commutative ring objects.
It is well known that the zeroth stable homotopy group of a genuine equivariant commutative ring spectrum has multiplicative transfers (norms), making it into a Tambara functor. We prove here that all Tambara functors can be obtained in this way. In fact, we prove that the homotopy category of Eilenberg MacLane commutative ring spectra is equivalent to the category of Tambara functors. Several algebraic results on Tambara functors are derived as corollaries. Finally, we rule out the existence of a lax symmetric monoidal construction for Eilenberg MacLane spectra when the group is nontrivial.
This paper establishes a connection between equivariant ring spectra and Witt vectors in the sense of Dress and Siebeneicher. Given a commutative ringspectrum T in the highly structured sense, that is, an E-infinity-ringspectrum, with action of a finite group G we construct a ringhomomorphism from the ring of G-typical Witt vectors of the zeroth homotopy group of T to the zeroth homotopy group of the G-fixed point spectrum of T. In the particular case, where T is the periodic unitary cobordism spectrum introduced by Strickland, we show that this ringhomomorphism is injective, and we interpret …
The paper is devoted to study the space of multiplicative maps from the Eilenberg-MacLane spectrum $H\Z$ to an arbitrary ring spectrum $R$. We try to generalize the approach of Schwede from "Formal groups and stable homotopy of commutative rings", where the special case of the mentioned above problem was solved in full generality. Among other results we propose a definition of a formal group law in any ring spectrum, which might be of interest in its own.
This book introduces a new context for global homotopy theory, i.e., equivariant homotopy theory with universal symmetries. Many important equivariant theories naturally exist not just for a particular group, but in a uniform way for all groups in a specific class. Prominent examples are equivariant stable homotopy, equivariant $K$-theory or equivariant bordism. Global equivariant homotopy theory studies such uniform phenomena, i.e., the adjective `global' refers to simultaneous and compatible actions of all compact Lie groups. We give a self-contained treatment of unstable and stable global h…
We prove that the derived category of $R$-linear representations of a finite group $G$ is stratified for any regular commutative ring $R$. As an application, we obtain a classification of localizing tensor ideals of ordinary $R$-linear $G$-representations whose underlying $R$-module is projective.
Let $T$ be a compact torus. We prove that, up to equivariant rational equivalence, the category of $T$-simply connected, $T$-finite type $T$-spaces with finitely many isotropy types is completely described by certain finite systems of commutative differential graded algebras with consistent choices of degree $2$ cohomology classes. We show that the algebraic systems corresponding to finite $T$-CW-complexes are exactly those which satisfy the necessary condition imposed by the Borel localization theorem along with certain finiteness conditions. We derive an algebraic characterization of when an…
A group action on the input ring or category induces an action on the algebraic $K$-theory spectrum. However, a shortcoming of this naive approach to equivariant algebraic $K$-theory is, for example, that the map of spectra with $G$-action induced by a $G$-map of $G$-rings is not equivariant. We define a version of equivariant algebraic $K$-theory which encodes a group action on the input in a functorial way to produce a $genuine$ algebraic $K$-theory $G$-spectrum for a finite group $G$. The main technical work lies in studying coherent actions on the input category. A payoff of our approach i…
In this paper we develop the basic homotopy theory of G-symmetric spectra (that is, symmetric spectra with a G-action) for a finite group G, as a model for equivariant stable homotopy with respect to a G-set universe. This model lies in between Mandell's equivariant symmetric spectra and the G-orthogonal spectra of Mandell and May and is Quillen equivalent to the two. We further discuss equivariant semistability, construct model structures on module, algebra and commutative algebra categories and describe the homotopical properties of the multiplicative norm in this context.
We construct an explicit model for the connective cover of the spectrum of $K$-theory with reality. This model is a $\ztwo$-equivariant commutative symmetric ring spectrum which identifies with another one due to D. Dugger.
For any compact Lie group $G$, we give a description of genuine $G$-spectra in terms of the naive equivariant spectra underlying their geometric fixedpoints. We use this to give an analogous description of cyclotomic spectra in terms of naive $T$-spectra (where $T$ denotes the circle group), generalizing Nikolaus--Scholze's recent work in the eventually-connective case. We also give an explicit formula for the homotopy invariants of the cyclotomic structure on a cyclotomic spectrum in these terms.
A classical theorem due to Quillen (1969) identifies the unitary bordism ring with the Lazard ring, which classifies the universal one-dimensional commutative formal group law. We prove an equivariant generalization of this result by identifying the homotopy theoretic $\mathbb{Z}/2$-equivariant unitary bordism ring, introduced by tom Dieck (1970), with the $\mathbb{Z}/2$-equivariant Lazard ring, introduced by Cole-Greenlees-Kriz (2000). Our proof combines a computation of the homotopy theoretic $\mathbb{Z}/2$-equivariant unitary bordism ring due to Strickland (2001) with a detailed investigati…
We give a general framework of equivariant model category theory. Our groups G, called Hopf groups, are suitably defined group objects in any well-behaved symmetric monoidal category V. For any V, a discrete group G gives a Hopf group, denoted I[G]. When V is cartesian monoidal, the Hopf groups are just the group objects in V. When V is the category of modules over a commutative ring R, I[G] is the group ring R[G] and the general Hopf groups are the cocommutative Hopf algebras over R. We show how all of the usual constructs of equivariant homotopy theory, both categorical and model theoretic, …
Hyperoctahedral homology is the homology theory associated to the hyperoctahedral crossed simplicial group. It is defined for involutive algebras over a commutative ring using functor homology and the hyperoctahedral bar construction of Fiedorowicz. The main result of the paper proves that hyperoctahedral homology is related to equivariant stable homotopy theory: for a discrete group of odd order, the hyperoctahedral homology of the group algebra is isomorphic to the homology of the fixed points under the involution of an equivariant infinite loop space built from the classifying space of the …
We study the homology jump loci of a chain complex over an affine \k-algebra. When the chain complex is the first page of the equivariant spectral sequence associated to a regular abelian cover of a finite-type CW-complex, we relate those jump loci to the resonance varieties associated to the cohomology ring of the space. As an application, we show that vanishing resonance implies a certain finiteness property for the completed Alexander invariants of the space. We also show that vanishing resonance is a Zariski open condition, on a natural parameter space for connected, finite-dimensional com…
For a "genuine" equivariant commutative ring spectrum $R$, $π_0(R)$ admits a rich algebraic structure known as a Tambara functor. This algebraic structure mirrors the structure on $R$ arising from the existence of multiplicative norm maps. Motivated by the surprising fact that Bousfield localization can destroy some of the norm maps, in previous work we studied equivariant commutative ring structures parametrized by $N_\infty$ operads. In a precise sense, these interpolate between "naive" and "genuine" equivariant ring structures. In this paper, we describe the algebraic analogue of $N_\infty$…
Given a finite group G, we develop a theory of G-equivariant noncommutative motives. This theory provides a well-adapted framework for the study of G-schemes, Picard groups of schemes, G-algebras, 2-cocycles, equivariant algebraic K-theory, orbifold cohomology theory, etc. Among other results, we relate our theory with its commutative counterpart as well as with Panin's motivic theory. As a first application, we extend Panin's computations, concerning twisted projective homogeneous varieties, to a large class of invariants. As a second application, we prove that whenever the category of perfec…
In this paper, we investigate certain graded-commutative rings which are related to the reciprocal plane compactification of the coordinate ring of a complement of a hyperplane arrangement. We give a presentation of these rings by generators and defining relations. This presentation was used by Holler and I. Kriz to calculate the $\mathbb{Z}$-graded coefficients of localizations of ordinary $RO((\mathbb{Z}/p)^n)$-graded equivariant cohomology at a given set of representation spheres, and also more recently by the author in a generalization to the case of an arbitrary finite group. We also give…
Hyperoctahedral homology for involutive algebras is the homology theory associated to the hyperoctahedral crossed simplicial group. It is related to equivariant stable homotopy theory via the homology of equivariant infinite loop spaces. In this paper we show that there is an E-infinity algebra structure on the simplicial module that computes hyperoctahedral homology. We deduce that hyperoctahedral homology admits Dyer-Lashof homology operations. Furthermore, there is a Pontryagin product which gives hyperoctahedral homology the structure of an associative, graded-commutative algebra. We also …
We give conditions on a monoidal model category M and on a set of maps C so that the Bousfield localization of M with respect to C preserves the structure of algebras over various operads. This problem was motivated by an example that demonstrates that, for the model category of equivariant spectra, preservation does not come for free, even for cofibrant operads. We discuss this example in detail and provide a general theorem regarding when localization preserves P-algebra structure for an arbitrary operad P. We characterize the localizations that respect monoidal structure and prove that all …
We classify the primitive idempotents of the $p$-local complex representation ring of a finite group $G$ in terms of the cyclic subgroups of order prime to $p$ and show that they all come from idempotents of the Burnside ring. Our results hold without adjoining roots of unity or inverting the order of $G$, thus extending classical structure theorems. We then derive explicit group-theoretic obstructions for tensor induction to be compatible with the resulting idempotent splitting of the representation ring Mackey functor. Our main motivation is an application in homotopy theory: we conclude tha…
For every abelian compact Lie group A, we prove that the homotopical A-equivariant complex bordism ring, introduced by tom Dieck (1970), is isomorphic to the A-equivariant Lazard ring, introduced by Cole-Greenlees-Kriz (2000). This settles a conjecture of Greenlees. We also show an analog for homotopical real bordism rings over elementary abelian 2-groups. Our results generalize classical theorems of Quillen (1969) on the connection between non-equivariant bordism rings and formal group laws, and extend the case $A = C_2$ due to Hanke-Wiemeler (2018). We work in the framework of global homotop…
We provide a complete characterization of the equivariant commutative ring structures of all the factors in the idempotent splitting of the G-equivariant sphere spectrum, including their Hill-Hopkins-Ravenel norms, where G is any finite group. Our results describe explicitly how these structures depend on the subgroup lattice and conjugation in G. Algebraically, our analysis characterizes the multiplicative transfers on the localization of the Burnside ring of G at any idempotent element, which is of independent interest to group theorists. As an application, we obtain an explicit description …
