We study the homology jump loci of a chain complex over an affine \k-algebra. When the chain complex is the first page of the equivariant spectral sequence associated to a regular abelian cover of a finite-type CW-complex, we relate those jump loci to the resonance varieties associated to the cohomology ring of the space. As an application, we show that vanishing resonance implies a certain finiteness property for the completed Alexander invariants of the space. We also show that vanishing resonance is a Zariski open condition, on a natural parameter space for connected, finite-dimensional commutative graded algebras.
We give two applications of the exponential Ax-Lindemann Theorem to local systems. One application is to show that for a connected topological space, the existence of a finite model of the real homotopy type implies linearity of the cohomology jump loci around the trivial local system. Another application is the linearity of the cohomology jump loci of rank one local systems on quasi-compact Kähler manifolds.
This is a survey of recent results related to cohomology jump loci. It emphasizes connections with deformations with cohomology constraints, global structural results for rank one local systems and line bundles, some connections with restrictions on fundamental groups and homotopy types, and connections with classical singularity theory and Bernstein-Sato ideals.
We use augmented commutative differential graded algebra (ACDGA) models to study $G$-representation varieties of fundamental groups $π=π_1(M)$ and their embedded cohomology jump loci, around the trivial representation 1. When the space $M$ admits a finite family of maps, uniformly modeled by ACDGA morphisms, and certain finiteness and connectivity assumptions are satisfied, the germs at 1 of ${\rm Hom} (π,G)$ and of the embedded jump loci can be described in terms of their infinitesimal counterparts, naturally with respect to the given families. This approach leads to fairly explicit answers w…
We study the germs at the origin of $G$-representation varieties and the degree 1 cohomology jump loci of fundamental groups of quasi-projective manifolds. Using the Morgan-Dupont model associated to a convenient compactification of such a manifold, we relate these germs to those of their infinitesimal counterparts, defined in terms of flat connections on those models. When the linear algebraic group $G$ is either $\textrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{C})$ or its standard Borel subgroup and the depth of the jump locus is 1, this dictionary works perfectly, allowing us to describe in this way explicit irreduc…
We consider representation varieties in $SL_2$ for lattices in solvable Lie groups, and representation varieties in $sl_2$ for finite-dimensional Lie algebras. Inside them, we examine depth 1 characteristic varieties for solvmanifolds, respectively resonance varieties for cochain Differential Graded Algebras of Lie algebras. We prove a general result that leads, in both cases, to the complete description of the analytic germs at the origin, for the corresponding embedded rank 2 jump loci.
The cohomology jump loci of a space $X$ are of two basic types: the characteristic varieties, defined in terms of homology with coefficients in rank one local systems, and the resonance varieties, constructed from information encoded in either the cohomology ring, or an algebraic model for $X$. We explore here the geometry of these varieties and the delicate interplay between them in the context of closed, orientable 3-dimensional manifolds and link complements. The classical multivariable Alexander polynomial plays an important role in this analysis. As an application, we derive some conseque…
We show that the fundamental groups of normal complex algebraic varieties share many properties of the fundamental groups of smooth varieties. The jump loci of rank one local systems on a normal variety are related to the jump loci of a resolution and of a smoothing of this variety.
We use equivariant localization and divided difference operators to determine formulas for the torus-equivariant fundamental cohomology classes of $K$-orbit closures on the flag variety $G/B$ for various symmetric pairs $(G,K)$. In type $A$, we realize the closures of $K=GL(p,\C) \times GL(q,\C)$-orbits on $GL(p+q,\C)/B$ as universal degeneracy loci for a vector bundle over a variety which is equipped with a single flag of subbundles and which splits as a direct sum of subbundles of ranks $p$ and $q$. The precise description of such a degeneracy locus relies upon knowing a set-theoretic descri…
Let X be a finite CW-complex, denote its fundamental group by G. Let R be an n-dimensional complex repesentation of G. Any element A of the first cohomology group of X with complex coefficients gives rise to the exponential deformation of the representation R, which can be considered as a curve in the space of representations. We show that the cohomology of X with local coefficients corresponding to the generic point of this curve is computable from a spectral sequence starting from the cohomology of X with R-twisted coefficients. We compute the differentials of the spectral sequence in terms …
We study the cohomology jump loci of rank one local systems for the plane curve germ complement by the deletion restriction method. In particular, the deletion restriction type results in this case only depend on the linking numbers between the irreducible components of the plane curve germ.
We develop a new approach to the study of the multipoint loci of holomorphic maps between complex manifolds. We relate the $k$-fold locus to the curvilinear component of the Hilbert scheme of $k$ points on the source space of the map, and using equivariant localisation, we derive a closed iterated multipoint residue formula. Our work is motivated by ideas and conjectures of M. Kazarian and R. Rimányi on residual polynomials.
For arbitrary field coefficients $\mathbb{K}$, we show that $\mathbb{K}$-perverse sheaves on a complex affine torus satisfy the so-called propagation package, i.e., the generic vanishing property and the signed Euler characteristic property hold, and the corresponding cohomology jump loci satisfy the propagation property and codimension lower bound. The main ingredient used in the proof is Gabber-Loeser's Mellin transformation functor for $\mathbb{K}$-constructible complexes on a complex affine torus, and the fact that it behaves well with respect to perverse sheaves. As a concrete topological…
We explore the relationship between a certain "abelian duality" property of spaces and the propagation properties of their cohomology jump loci. To that end, we develop the analogy between abelian duality spaces and those spaces which possess what we call the "EPY property." The same underlying homological algebra allows us to deduce the propagation of jump loci: in the former case, characteristic varieties propagate, and in the latter, the resonance varieties. We apply the general theory to arrangements of linear and elliptic hyperplanes, as well as toric complexes, right-angled Artin groups,…
We examine complements (inside products of a smooth projective complex curve of arbitrary genus) of unions of diagonals indexed by the edges of an arbitrary simple graph. We use Gysin models associated to these quasi-projective manifolds to compute pairs of analytic germs at the origin, both for rank 1 and 2 representation varieties of their fundamental groups, and for degree 1 topological Green--Lazarsfeld loci. As a corollary, we describe all regular surjections with connected generic fiber, defined on the above complements onto smooth complex curves of negative Euler characteristic. We show…
We prove that the cohomology jump loci of rank one local systems on the complement in a small ball of a germ of a complex analytic set are finite unions of torsion translates of subtori. This is a generalization of the classical Monodromy Theorem stating that the eigenvalues of the monodromy on the cohomology of the Milnor fiber of a germ of a holomorphic function are roots of unity.
Let $G$ be a complex connected reductive algebraic group that acts on a smooth complex algebraic variety $X$, and let $E$ be a $G$-equivariant algebraic vector bundle over $X$. A section of $E$ is regular if it is transversal to the zero section. Let $U\subsetΓ(X,E)$ be the subset of regular sections. We give a sufficient condition in terms of topological invariants of $E$ and $X$ that implies that every orbit map $O\colon G\to U$ induces a surjection in rational cohomology. Under natural assumptions on $X$ and $E$ this condition is also necessary. If the condition is satisfied, then (1) the g…
