We study the algebraic dynamics of self-correspondences on a curve. A self-correspondence on a (proper and smooth) curve $C$ over an algebraically closed field is the data of another curve $D$ and two non-constant separable morphisms $π_1$ and $π_2$ from $D$ to $C$. A subset $S$ of $C$ is complete if $π_1^{-1}(S)=π_2^{-1}(S)$. We show that self-correspondences are divided into two classes: those that have only finitely many finite complete sets, and those for which $C$ is a union of finite complete sets. The latter ones are called finitary and have a trivial dynamics. For a non-finitary self-correspondence in characteristic zero, we give a sharp bound for the number of étale finite complete sets.
In this article, we study the invariant differential forms which a correspondence of curves admits. We also try to classify the correspondences of $\mathbb{P}^1$ that admits such invariant differential forms.
We show a version of the DT/PT correspondence relating local curve counting invariants, encoding the contribution of a fixed smooth curve in a Calabi-Yau threefold. We exploit a local study of the Hilbert-Chow morphism about the cycle of a smooth curve. We determine, via Quot schemes, the global Donaldson-Thomas theory of a general Abel-Jacobi curve of genus $3$.
The nonabelian Hodge correspondence for vector bundles over noncompact curves is adequately described by implementing a weighted filtration on the objects involved. In order to establish a full correspondence between a Dolbeault and a de Rham space for a general complex reductive group $G$, we introduce torsors given by parahoric group schemes in the sense of Bruhat--Tits. Combined with existing results on the Riemann--Hilbert correspondence for logarithmic parahoric connections, this gives a full nonabelian Hodge correspondence from Higgs bundles to fundamental group representations over a no…
In this paper, we construct certain algebraic correspondences between genus three curves and certain type of Calabi-Yau threefolds which is double coverings of three dimensional projective space. Via this correspondences, the first cohomology groups of the curves can be embedded into the third cohomology groups of the Calabi-Yau three folds. Moreover we prove that the cokernel of this inclusion of variations ofHodge structures can not be a factor of any variations of Hodge structures comming from polarized abelian schemes.
The Donaldson-Thomas invariant is a curve counting invariant on Calabi-Yau 3-folds via ideal sheaves. Another counting invariant via stable pairs is introduced by Pandharipande and Thomas, which counts pairs of curves and divisors on them. These two theories are conjecturally equivalent via generating functions, called DT/PT correspondence. In this paper, we show the Euler characteristic version of DT/PT correspondence, using the notion of weak stability conditions and the wall-crossing formula.
By associating to a curve C of genus g=2k and a pencil of degree d=k+1 the so-called trace curve (resp. the reduced trace curve) we define a rational map from the Hurwitz space of admissible covers of genus g=2k and degree d=k+1 to a moduli space of stable curves. We study the induced map between the divisor class groups of these moduli spaces of curves.
In this paper we generalize correspondence theorems of Mikhalkin and Nishinou-Siebert providing a correspondence between algebraic and parameterized tropical curves. We also give a description of a canonical tropicalization procedure for algebraic curves motivated by Berkovich's construction of skeletons of analytic curves. Under certain assumptions, we construct a one-to-one correspondence between algebraic curves satisfying toric constraints and certain combinatorially defined objects, called "stacky tropical reductions", that can be enumerated in terms of tropical curves satisfying linear c…
We study the equivariant Gromov-Witten and Donaldson-Thomas theories of $\mathbf{P}^2$-bundles over curves. We show the equivariant GW/DT correspondence holds to first order for certain curve classes
Given two irreducible curves of the plane which have isomorphic complements, it is natural to ask whether there exists an automorphism of the plane that sends one curve on the other. This question has a positive answer for a large family of curves and H.Yoshihara conjectured that it is true in general. We exhibit counterexamples to this conjecture, over any ground field. In some of the cases, the curves are isomorphic and in others not; this provides counterexamples of two different kinds. Finally, we use our construction to find the existence of surprising non-linear automorphisms of affine s…
In this note we prove the genus 3 case of a conjecture of G. Farkas and A. Verra on the limit of the Scorza correspondence for curves with a theta-null. Specifically, we show that the limit of the Scorza correspondence for a hyperelliptic genus 3 curve C is the union of the curve ${x,σ(x))$ (where $σ$ is the hyperelliptic involution), and twice the diagonal. Our proof uses the geometry of the subsystem Γ_{00} of the linear system 2Θ, and Riemann identities for theta constants.
We study symmetric correspondences with completely decomposable minimal equation on smooth projective curves $C$. The Jacobian of $C$ then decomposes correspondingly. For all positive integers $g$ and $\ell$, we give series of examples of smooth curves $C$ of genus $n^\ell (g-1) +1$ with correspondences satisfying minimal equations of degree $\ell+1$ such that the Jacobian of $C$ has at least $2^\ell$ isogeny components.
In this paper, we show the Langlands correspondence for isocrystals on curves. This shows the existence of crystalline companion in the curve case. For the proof, we construct the theory of arithmetic $\mathscr{D}$-modules for algebraic stacks whose diagonal morphisms are finite.
Let $(C,\bt)$ ($\bt=(t_1,...,t_n)$) be an $n$-pointed smooth projective curve of genus $g$ and take an element $\blambda=(λ^{(i)}_j)\in\C^{nr}$ such that $-\sum_{i,j}λ^{(i)}_j=d\in\mathbf{Z}$. For a weight $\balpha$, let $M_C^{\balpha}(\bt,\blambda)$ be the moduli space of $\balpha$-stable $(\bt,\blambda)$-parabolic connections on $C$ and let $RP_r(C,\bt)_{\ba}$ be the moduli space of representations of the fundamental group $π_1(C\setminus\{t_1,...,t_n\},*)$ with the local monodromy data $\ba$ for a certain $\ba\in\C^{nr}$. Then we prove that the morphism $\RH:M_C^{\balpha}(\bt,\blambda)\righ…
In this article we establish some constraints on the eigenvalues for the action of a self map of a proper variety on its $\ell$-adic cohomology. The essential ingredients are a trace formula due to Fujiwara, and the theory of weights.
In this paper, second installment in a series of three, we give a correspondence theorem to relate the count of genus $g$ curves in a fixed linear system in an abelian surface to a tropical count. To do this, we relate the linear system defined by a complex curve to certain integrals of 1-forms over cycles in the curve. We then give an expression for the tropical multiplicity provided by the correspondence theorem, and prove the invariance for the associated refined multiplicity, thus introducing refined invariants of Block-Göttsche type in abelian surfaces.
Using degeneration techniques, we prove the correspondence of tropical curve counts and log Gromov-Witten invariants with general incidence and psi-class conditions in toric varieties for genus zero curves and all non-superabundant higher-genus situations. We also relate the log invariants to the ordinary ones, in particular explaining the appearance of negative multiplicities in the descendant correspondence result of Mark Gross.
In this paper, we study the deformation theory of degenerate algebraic curves on singular varieties which appear as the degenerate limit of families of varieties. For this purpose, we systematically develop a new method to calculate the obstruction cohomology class of degenerate algebraic curves. This enables us to judge whether a given degenerate curve can be deformed to a smooth curve or not in variety of situations. In this paper, we apply it to curves of genus one on degeneration of toric varieties. In particular, we obtain the necessary and sufficient condition for the realizability of tr…
In \cite{CVX3}, we have established a Springer theory for the symmetric pair $(\operatorname{SL}(N),\operatorname{SO}(N))$. In this setting we obtain representations of (the Tits extension) of the braid group rather than just Weyl group representations. These representations arise from cohomology of families of certain (Hessenberg) varieties. In this paper we determine the Springer correspondence explicitly for IC sheaves supported on order 2 nilpotent orbits. In this process we encounter universal families of hyperelliptic curves. As an application we calculate the cohomolgy of Fano varieties…
Special kinds of rank 2 vector bundles with (possibly irregular) connections on P^1 are considered. We construct an equivalence between the derived category of quasi-coherent sheaves on the moduli stack of such bundles and the derived category of modules over a TDO ring on certain non-separated curve. We identify this curve with the coarse moduli space of some parabolic bundles on P^1. Then our equivalence becomes an example of the categorical Langlands correspondence.
We prove the Landau-Ginzburg/Calabi-Yau correspondence between the Gromov-Witten theory of each elliptic orbifold curve and its Fan-Jarvis-Ruan-Witten theory counterpart via modularity. We show that the correlation functions in these two enumerative theories are different representations of the same set of quasi-modular forms, expanded around different points on the upper-half plane. We relate these two representations by the Cayley transform.
In this paper, we introduce modular polynomials for the congruence subgroup $Γ_0(M)$ when $ X_0(M) $ has genus zero and therefore the polynomials are defined by a Hauptmodul of $ X_0(M) $. We show that the intersection number of two curves defined by two modular polynomials can be expressed as the sum of the numbers of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$-equivalence classes of positive definite binary quadratic forms over $\mathbb{Z}$. We also show that the intersection numbers can be also combinatorially written by Fourier coefficients of the Siegel Eisenstein series of degree 2, weight 2 with respec…
We survey some features of equivariant instanton partition functions of topological gauge theories on four and six dimensional toric Kahler varieties, and their geometric and algebraic counterparts in the enumerative problem of counting holomorphic curves. We discuss the relations of instanton counting to representations of affine Lie algebras in the four-dimensional case, and to Donaldson-Thomas theory for ideal sheaves on Calabi-Yau threefolds. For resolutions of toric singularities, an algebraic structure induced by a quiver determines the instanton moduli space through the McKay correspond…
We provide criteria for deciding whether a given planar curve is an image of a given spatial curve, obtained by a central or a parallel projection with unknown parameters. These criteria reduce the projection problem to a certain modification of the equivalence problem of planar curves under affine and projective transformations. The latter problem can be addressed using Cartan's moving frame method. This leads to a novel algorithmic solution of the projection problem for curves. The computational advantage of the algorithms presented here, in comparison to algorithms based on a straightforwar…
Deninger and Werner developed an analogue for p-adic curves of the classical correspondence of Narasimhan and Seshadri between stable bundles of degree zero and unitary representations of the topological fundamental group for a complex smooth proper curve. Using parallel transport, they associated functorially to every vector bundle on a p-adic curve whose reduction is strongly semi-stable of degree 0 a p-adic representation of the fundamental group of the curve. They asked several questions: whether their functor is fully faithful; whether the cohomology of the local systems produced by this …
Recently, Cao-Maulik-Toda defined stable pair invariants of a compact Calabi-Yau 4-fold $X$. Their invariants are conjecturally related to the Gopakumar-Vafa type invariants of $X$ defined using Gromov-Witten theory by Klemm-Pandharipande. In this paper, we consider curve counting invariants of $X$ using Hilbert schemes of curves and conjecture a DT/PT correspondence which relates these to stable pair invariants of $X$. After providing evidence in the compact case, we define analogous invariants for toric Calabi-Yau 4-folds using a localization formula. We formulate a vertex formalism for both…
In the context of arithmetic surfaces, Bost defined a generalized Arithmetic Chow Group (ACG) using the Sobolev space L^2_1. We study the behavior of these groups under pull-back and push-forward and we prove a projection formula. We use these results to define an action of the Hecke operators on the ACG of modular curves and to show that they are self-adjoint with respect to the arithmetic intersection product. The decomposition of the ACG in eigencomponents which follows allows us to define new numerical invariants, which are refined versions of the self-intersection of the dualizing sheaf. …
An integral hyperbolic lattice is called reflective if its automorphism group is generated by reflections, up to finite index. Since 1981, it is known that their number is essentially finite. We show that K3 surfaces over C with reflective Picard lattices can be characterized in terms of compositions of their self-correspondences via moduli of sheaves with primitive isotropic Mukai vector: Their self-correspondences with integral action on the Picard lattice are numerically equivalent to compositions of a finite number of especially simple self-correspondences via moduli of sheaves. This relat…
We present a novel algorithm for deciding whether a given planar curve is an image of a given spatial curve, obtained by a central or a parallel projection with unknown parameters. A straightforward approach to this problem consists of setting up a system of conditions on the projection parameters and then checking whether or not this system has a solution. The main advantage of the algorithm presented here, in comparison to algorithms based on the straightforward approach, lies in a significant reduction of a number of real parameters that need to be eliminated in order to establish existence…
We study arithmetic intersections on twisted (quaternionic) Hilbert modular surfaces and Shimura curves over a real quadratic field. Our first main result is the determination of the degree of the top arithmetic Todd class of an arithmetic twisted Hilbert modular surface. This quantity is then related to the arithmetic volume of a Shimura curve, via the arithmetic Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem and the Jacquet-Langlands correspondence.
We introduce endomorphisms of special jacobians and show that they satisfy polynomial equations with all integer roots which we compute. The eigen-abelian varieties for these endomorphisms are generalizations of Prym-Tjurin varieties and naturally contain special curves representing cohomology classes which are not expected to be represented by curves in generic abelian varieties.
We study the formal properties of correspondences of curves without a core, focusing on the case of étale correspondences. The motivating examples come from Hecke correspondences of Shimura curves. Given a correspondence without a core, we construct an infinite graph $\mathcal{G}_{gen}$ together with a large group of "algebraic" automorphisms $A$. The graph $\mathcal{G}_{gen}$ measures the "generic dynamics" of the correspondence. We construct specialization maps $\mathcal{G}_{gen}\rightarrow\mathcal{G}_{phys}$ to the "physical dynamics" of the correspondence. We also prove results on the numb…
This essay builds on the idea of grouping the polar curves of 2-variable function germs into polar clusters. In the topological category, one obtains a bijective correspondence between certain partitions of the polar quotients of two topologically equivalent function germs. We explain how this bijective correspondence may be refined in the Lipschitz category in terms of the associated gradient canyons.
The Langlands correspondence for complex curves is traditionally formulated in terms of sheaves rather than functions. Recently, Langlands asked whether it is possible to construct a function-theoretic version. In this paper we use the algebra of commuting global differential operators (quantum Hitchin Hamiltonians and their complex conjugates) on the moduli space of G-bundles of a complex algebraic curve to formulate a function-theoretic correspondence. We conjecture the existence of a canonical self-adjoint extension of the symmetric part of this algebra acting on an appropriate Hilbert spac…
A tropical curve in $\mathbb R^{3}$ contributes to Gromov-Witten invariants in all genus. Nevertheless, we present a simple formula for how a given tropical curve contributes to Gromov-Witten invariants when we encode these invariants in a generating function with exponents of $λ$ recording Euler characteristic. Our main modification from the known tropical correspondence formula for rational curves is as follows: a trivalent vertex, which before contributed a factor of $n$ to the count of zero-genus holomorphic curves, contributes a factor of $2\sin(nλ/2)$. We explain how to calculate relativ…
We present a method of obtaining a Belyi map on an elliptic curve from that on the Riemann sphere. This is done by writing the former as a radical of the latter, which we call a quadratic correspondence, with the radical determining the elliptic curve. With a host of examples of various degrees we demonstrate that the correspondence is an efficient way of obtaining genus one Belyi maps. As applications, we find the Belyi maps for the dessins d'enfant which have arisen as brane-tilings in the physics community, including ones, such as the so-called suspended pinched point, which have been a sta…
We present a novel algorithm for deciding whether a given planar curve is an image of a given spatial curve, obtained by a central or a parallel projection with unknown parameters. The motivation comes from the problem of establishing a correspondence between an object and an image, taken by a camera with unknown position and parameters. A straightforward approach to this problem consists of setting up a system of conditions on the projection parameters and then checking whether or not this system has a solution. The computational advantage of the algorithm presented here, in comparison to alg…
We develop a descent criterion for $K$-linear abelian categories. Using recent advances in the Langlands correspondence due to Abe, we build a correspondence between certain rank 2 local systems and certain Barsotti-Tate groups on complete curves over a finite field. We conjecture that such Barsotti-Tate groups "come from" a family of fake elliptic curves. As an application of these ideas, we provide a criterion for being a Shimura curve over $\mathbb{F}_q$. Along the way, we formulate a conjecture on the field-of-coefficients of certain compatible systems.
