The augmentation powers in an integral group ring $\mathbb ZG$ induce a natural filtration of the unit group of $\mathbb ZG$ analogous to the filtration of the group $G$ given by its dimension series $\{D_n(G)\}_{n\ge 1}$. The purpose of the present article is to investigate this filtration, in particular, the triviality of its intersection.
Let $G$ be a finite group, $Ω(G)$ be its Burnside ring, and $Δ(G)$ its augmentation ideal. Denote by $Δ^n(G)$ and $Q_n(G)$ the $n$-th power of $Δ(G)$ and the $n$-th consecutive quotient group $Δ^n(G)/Δ^{n+1}(G)$, respectively. This paper provides an explicit $\mathbb{Z}$-basis for $Δ^n(\mathcal{H})$ and determine the isomorphism class of $Q_n(\mathcal{H})$ for each positive integer $n$, where $\mathcal{H}=\langle g,h |\, g^{p^m}=h^p=1, h^{-1}gh=g^{p^{m-1}+1}\rangle$, $p$ is an odd prime.
H. J. Zassenhaus conjectured that any unit of finite order and augmentation one in the integral group ring of a finite group $G$ is conjugate in the rational group algebra to an element of $G$. One way to verify this is showing that such unit has the same distribution of partial augmentations as an element of $G$ and the HeLP Method provides a tool to do that in some cases. In this paper we use the HeLP Method to describe the partial augmentations of a hypothetical counterexample to the conjecture for the projective special linear groups.
For a torsion unit $u$ of the integral group ring $\mathbb{Z} G$ of a finite group $G$, and a prime $p$ which does not divide the order of $u$ (but the order of $G$), a relation between the partial augmentations of $u$ on the $p$-regular classes of $G$ and Brauer character values is noted, analogous to the obvious relation between partial augmentations and ordinary character values. For non-solvable $G$, consequences concerning rational conjugacy of $u$ to a group element are discussed, considering as examples the symmetric group $S_{5}$ and the groups $\text{\rm PSL}(2,p^{f})$.
For any ring \(R\), some characterizations are obtained for unit regular elements in a corner ring \(eRe\) in terms of unit regular elements in \(R\). \noindent {\bf Key Words}: von Neumann regular rings, unit regular rings, corner rings, idempotents \noindent {\bf AMS Classification}: 16A30
Let $R$ be an associative ring with identity and let $N$ be a nil ideal of $R$. It is shown that units of $R/N$ can be lifted to units in $R$. Under some mild conditions on the ring, a procedure is given to determine those lifted units in a recursive way. As an application, the units of several classes of rings are determined, including: matrix rings, chain rings, and group rings where the ring is a chain ring. Numerical examples are given illustrating the main results.
A ring $R$ is a UU ring if every unit is unipotent, or equivalently if every unit is a sum of a nilpotent and an idempotent that commute. These rings have been investigated in Călugăreanu \cite{C} and in Danchev and Lam \cite{DL}. In this paper, two generalizations of UU rings are discussed. We study rings for which every unit is a sum of a nilpotent and an idempotent, and rings for which every unit is a sum of a nilpotent and two idempotents that commute with one another.
We study clean group rings and also the group rings whose every element is a sum of two units. We also prove that if R is an Abelian exchange ring and G is a locally finite group, then the group ring RG has stable range one.
We show that the category of corings over a fixed base ring with local units is equivalent to the category of comonads in (right) unital modules whose underlying functors preserve inductive limits. Changing base rings, we prove a bi-equivalence of bicategories. A base ring extension of corings by adjunctions is also introduced.
We define the concepts of weakly precious and precious rings which generalize the notions of weakly clean and nil-clean rings. We obtain some fundamental properties of these rings. We also obtain certain subclasses of such rings and then offer new kinds of weakly clean rings and nil-clean rings.
Recently, the author characterized all artinian square-free rings with identity. Here, those results are extended to the setting of rings with local units. We use this characterization of square-free rings to derive many results similar to the artinian case and to determine, in cohomological terms, exactly when a square-free ring has an associated square-free algebra structure.
The object of study in this paper is the finite groups whose integral group rings have only trivial central units. Prime-power groups and metacyclic groups with this property are characterized. Metacyclic groups are classified according to the central height of the unit groups of their integral group rings.
In this paper we compute the sum of the $k$-th powers over any finite commutative unital rings, thus generalizing known results for finite fields, the rings of integers modulo $n$ or the ring of Gaussian integers modulo $n$. As an application we focus on quotient rings of the form $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}[x]/(f(x))$ for any polynomial $f\in\mathbb{Z}[x]$
We offer two comments on the beautiful papers of Giles Gardam and Alan Murray that yield counterexamples to the Kaplansky unit conjecture. First we discuss the determinants of these units in a certain $4\times 4$ matrix representation of the group ring. Then we explain why there is a doubly infinite family of units in the Murray paper.
Let $A$ be a commutative augmented ring and $I$ be its augmentation ideal. This paper shows that the sequence $\{I^n/I^{n+1}\}$ becomes stationary up to isomorphism. The result yields stability in the associated graded ring of $A$ along $I$.
Let $R$ be a finite unitary ring such that $R=R_0[R^*]$ where $R_0$ is the prime ring and $R^*$ is not a nilpotent group. We show that if all proper subgroups of $R^*$ are nilpotent groups, then the cardinal of $R$ is a power of prime number 2. In addition, if $(R/Jac(R))^*$ is not a $p-$group, then either $R\cong M_2(GF(2))$ or $R\cong M_2(GF(2))\oplus A$ where $M_2(GF(2))$ is the ring of $2\times 2$ matrices over the finite field $GF(2)$ and $A$ is a direct sum of finite field $GF(2)$.
We investigate near-ring properties that generalize nearfield properties about units. We study zero symmetric near-rings $N$ with identity with two interrelated properties: the units with zero form an additive subgroup of $(N,+)$; the units act without fixedpoints on $(N,+)$. There are many similarities between these cases, but also many differences. Rings with these properties are fields, near-rings allow more possibilities, which are investigated. Descriptions of constructions are obtained and used to create examples showing the two properties are independent but related. Properties of the a…
We discuss the projective line $\mathbb{P}(R)$ over a finite associative ring with unity. $\mathbb{P}(R)$ is naturally endowed with the symmetric and anti-reflexive relation "distant". We study the graph of this relation on $\mathbb{P}(R)$ and classify up to isomorphism all distant graphs $G(R, Δ)$ for rings $R$ up to order $p^5$, $p$ prime.
If $R$ is a regular and semiartinian ring, it is proved that the following conditions are equivalent: (1) $R$ is unit-regular, (2) every factor ring of $R$ is directly finite, (3) the abelian group $K_0(R)$ is free and admits a basis which is in a canonical one to one correspondence with a set of representatives of simple right $R$-modules. For the class of semiartinian and unit-regular rings the canonical partial order of $K_0(R)$ is investigated and the directed abelian groups which are realizable as $K_0(R)$ of these rings are classified.
In \cite[Problem 72]{Fuchs60} Fuchs asked the following question: which groups can be the group of units of a commutative ring? In the following years, some partial answers have been given to this question in particular cases. The aim of the present paper is to address Fuchs' question when $A$ is a {\it finite characteristic ring}. The result is a pretty good description of the groups which can occur as group of units in this case, equipped with examples showing that there are obstacles to a "short" complete classification. As a byproduct, we are able to classify all possible cardinalities of …
During the past three decades fundamental progress has been made on constructing large torsion-free subgroups (i.e. subgroups of finite index) of the unit group $\U (\Z G)$ of the integral group ring $\Z G$ of a finite group $G$. These constructions rely on explicit constructions of units in $\Z G$ and proofs of main results make use of the description of the Wedderburn components of the rational group algebra $\Q G$. The latter relies on explicit constructions of primitive central idempotents and the rational representations of $G$. It turns out that the existence of reduced two degree repres…
We give a constructive proof of the theorem of Bass and Milnor saying that if $G$ is a finite abelian group then the Bass units of the integral group ring $\Z G$ generate a subgroup of finite index in its units group $\U(\Z G)$. Our proof provides algorithms to represent some units that contribute to only one simple component of $\Q G$ and generate a subgroup of finite index in $\U(\Z G)$ as product of Bass units. We also obtain a basis $B$ formed by Bass units of a free abelian subgroup of finite index in $\U(\Z G)$ and give, for an arbitrary Bass unit $b$, an algorithm to express $b^{φ(|G|)}…
We describe an algorithm for obtaining generators of the unit group of the integral group ring ZG of a finite abelian group G. We used our implementation in Magma of this algorithm to compute the unit groups of ZG for G of order up to 110. In particular for those cases we obtained the index of the group of Hoechsmann units in the full unit group. At the end of the paper we describe an algorithm for the more general problem of finding generators of an arithmetic group corresponding to a diagonalizable algebraic group.
We construct an example of a unit-regular ring which is not strongly clean, answering an open question of Nicholson. We also characterize clean matrices with a zero column, and this allows us to describe an interesting connection between unit-regular elements and clean elements. It is also proven that given an element $a$ in a ring $R$, if $a,a^2,\ldots, a^k$ are all regular elements in $R$ (for some $k\geq 1$), then there exists $w\in R$ such that $a^{i}w^{i}a^{i}=a^{i}$ for $1\leq i\leq k$, and a similar statement holds for unit-regular elements. The paper ends with a large number of example…
It is shown that for any torsion unit of augmentation one in the integral group ring $\mathbb{Z} G$ of a finite solvable group $G$, there is an element of $G$ of the same order.
A ring is said to satisfy the $2$-nil-sum property if every non central-unit is the sum of two nilpotents. We prove that a ring satisfies the $2$-nil-sum property iff it is either a simple ring with the $2$-nil-sum property or a commutative local ring with nil Jacobson radical, and we provide an example of a simple ring with the $2$-nil-sum property that is not commutative. Moreover, a simple right Goldie ring has the $2$-nil-sum property iff it is a field.
Using the Luthar--Passi method, we investigate the possible orders and partial augmentations of torsion units of the normalized unit group of integral group rings of Conway simple groups $Co_1$, $Co_2$ and $Co_3$.
Let $G$ be a group which is the semidirect product of a normal subgroup $N$ and some subgroup $T$. Let $I^n(G)$, $n\ge 1$, denote the powers of the augmentation ideal $I(G)$ of the group ring $\Z(G)$. Using homological methods the groups $Q_n(G,H) = I^{n-1}(G)I(H)/I^{n}(G)I(H)$, $H=G,N,T$, are functorially expressed in terms of enveloping algebras of certain Lie rings associated with $N$ and $T$, in the following cases: for $n\le 4$ and arbitrary $G,N,T$ (except from one direct summand of $Q_4(G,N)$), and for all $n\ge 2$ if certain filtration quotients of $N$ and $T$ are torsionfree.
Let R be a unit-regular ring, and let a,b,c in R satisfy aba=aca. If ac and ba are group invertible, we prove that ac is similar to ba. Furthermore, if ac and ba are Drazin invertible, then their Drazin inverses are similar. For any n\times n complex matrices A,B,C with ABA = ACA ,we prove that AC and BA are similar if and only if their k-powers have the same rank. These generalize the known Flanders' theorem proved by Hartwig.
Let $G$ be a group and let $S=\bigoplus_{g \in G} S_g$ be a $G$-graded ring. Given a normal subgroup $N$ of $G$, there is a naturally induced $G/N$-grading of $S$. It is well-known that if $S$ is strongly $G$-graded, then the induced $G/N$-grading is strong for any $N$. The class of epsilon-strongly graded rings was recently introduced by Nystedt, Öinert and Pinedo as a generalization of unital strongly graded rings. We give an example of an epsilon-strongly graded partial skew group ring such that the induced quotient group grading is not epsilon-strong. Moreover, we give necessary and suffic…
A ring $R$ with an involution * is called (strongly) *-clean if every element of $R$ is the sum of a unit and a projection (that commute). All *-clean rings are clean. Va${\rm \check{s}}$ [L. Va${\rm \check{s}}$, *-Clean rings; some clean and almost clean Baer *-rings and von Neumann algebras, J. Algebra 324 (12) (2010) 3388-3400] asked whether there exists a *-ring that is clean but not *-clean and whether a unit regular and *-regular ring is strongly *-clean. In this paper, we answer both questions by several examples. Moreover, some characterizations of unit regular and *-regular rings are …
We investigate the possible character values of torsion units of the normalized unit group of the integral group ring of Mathieu sporadic group $M_{22}$. We confirm the Kimmerle conjecture on prime graphs for this group and specify the partial augmentations for possible counterexamples to the stronger Zassenhaus conjecture.
Given an extension $R \subseteq S$ of rings with same set of local units, inspired by the works of Miyashita, we construct four exact sequences of groups relating Picard's groups of $R$ and $S$.
Let R be a unitary ring of finite cardinality P^k, where p is a prime number and $p\nmid k$. We show that if the group of units of $R$ has at most one subgroup of order $p$, then $R\cong A\bigoplus B,$ where $B$ is a finite ring of order $k$ and $A$ is a ring of cardinality $p^β$ which is one of the six explicitly described types.
It is shown that in the units of augmentation one of an integral group ring $\mathbb{Z} G$ of a finite group $G$, a noncyclic subgroup of order $p^{2}$, for some odd prime $p$, exists only if such a subgroup exists in $G$. The corresponding statement for $p=2$ holds by the Brauer--Suzuki theorem, as recently observed by W. Kimmerle.
We show that the units found in torsion-free group rings by Gardam are twisted unitary elements. This justifies some choices in Gardam's construction that might have appeared arbitrary, and yields more examples of units. We note that all units found up to date exhibit non-trivial symmetry.
The aim of this article is to draw attention towards various natural but unanswered questions related to the lower central series of the unit group of an integral group ring.
Let $RG$ be the gruop ring of the group $G$ over ring $R$ and $\mathscr{U}(RG)$ be its unit group. Finding the structure of the unit group of a finite group ring is an old topic in ring theory. In, G. Tang et al: Unit Groups of Group Algebras of Some Small Groups. Czech. Math. J. 64 (2014), 149--157, the structure of the unit group of the group ring of the non abelian group $G$ with order $21$ over any finite field of characteristic 3 was established. In this paper, we are going to generalize their result to any non abelian group $G=T_{3m}$, where $T_{3m} = \langle x,y\,|\,x^m=y^3=1,\,x^y=x^t\…
In this paper, we study the question of when the symmetric units in an integral group ring ZG form a multiplicative group. When G is periodic, necessary and sufficient conditions are given for this to occur.
Using the Luthar--Passi method, we investigate the classical Zassenhaus conjecture for the normalized unit group of integral group rings of Janko sporadic simple groups. As a consequence, we obtain that the Gruenberg-Kegel graph of the Janko groups $J_1$, $J_2$ and $J_3$ is the same as that of the normalized unit group of their respective integral group ring.
Using the Luthar-Passi method, we investigate the classical Zassenhaus conjecture for the normalized unit group of the integral group ring of the Higman-Sims simple sporadic group HS. As a consequence, we confirm the Kimmerle's conjecture on prime graphs for this sporadic group.
For a finite group $G$, let $\tilde{\mathbb{Z}}$ be the semilocalization of $\mathbb{Z}$ at the prime divisors of $|G|$. If $G$ is a Frobenius group with Frobenius kernel $K$, it is shown that each torsion unit in the group ring $\tilde{\mathbb{Z}} G$ which maps to the identity under the natural ring homomorphism $\tilde{\mathbb{Z}} G \rightarrow \tilde{\mathbb{Z}} G/K$ is conjugate to an element of $G$ by a unit in $\tilde{\mathbb{Z}} G$.
We classify the finite groups $G$ such that the group of units of the integral group ring ${\mathbb Z} G$ has a subgroup of finite index which is a direct product of free-by-free groups.
We introduce structure theorems for the study of the unit conjecture for supersoluble group rings and apply our results to the (Passman) fours group G. We show that over any field K, the group algebra KG has no non-trivial units of length at most 3, and find that the Promislow set can never be the support of a unit in KG. We conclude our work with an introduction to the theory of "consistent chains" toward a preliminary analysis of units of higher length in KG.
