We classify the finite groups $G$ such that the group of units of the integral group ring ${\mathbb Z} G$ has a subgroup of finite index which is a direct product of free-by-free groups.
The algebras of Kleinian type are finite dimensional semisimple rational algebras $A$ such that the group of units of an order in $A$ is commensurable with a direct product of Kleinian groups. We classify the Schur algebras of Kleinian type and the group algebras of Kleinian type. As an application, we characterize the group rings $RG$, with $R$ an order in a number field and $G$ a finite group, such that $RG^*$ is virtually a direct product of free-by-free groups.
Given an extension $R \subseteq S$ of rings with same set of local units, inspired by the works of Miyashita, we construct four exact sequences of groups relating Picard's groups of $R$ and $S$.
We show that the units found in torsion-free group rings by Gardam are twisted unitary elements. This justifies some choices in Gardam's construction that might have appeared arbitrary, and yields more examples of units. We note that all units found up to date exhibit non-trivial symmetry.
Using the Luthar--Passi method, we investigate the possible orders and partial augmentations of torsion units of the normalized unit group of integral group rings of Conway simple groups $Co_1$, $Co_2$ and $Co_3$.
The aim of this article is to draw attention towards various natural but unanswered questions related to the lower central series of the unit group of an integral group ring.
Let $RG$ be the gruop ring of the group $G$ over ring $R$ and $\mathscr{U}(RG)$ be its unit group. Finding the structure of the unit group of a finite group ring is an old topic in ring theory. In, G. Tang et al: Unit Groups of Group Algebras of Some Small Groups. Czech. Math. J. 64 (2014), 149--157, the structure of the unit group of the group ring of the non abelian group $G$ with order $21$ over any finite field of characteristic 3 was established. In this paper, we are going to generalize their result to any non abelian group $G=T_{3m}$, where $T_{3m} = \langle x,y\,|\,x^m=y^3=1,\,x^y=x^t\…
In this paper, we study the question of when the symmetric units in an integral group ring ZG form a multiplicative group. When G is periodic, necessary and sufficient conditions are given for this to occur.
Using the Luthar--Passi method, we investigate the classical Zassenhaus conjecture for the normalized unit group of integral group rings of Janko sporadic simple groups. As a consequence, we obtain that the Gruenberg-Kegel graph of the Janko groups $J_1$, $J_2$ and $J_3$ is the same as that of the normalized unit group of their respective integral group ring.
Using the Luthar-Passi method, we investigate the classical Zassenhaus conjecture for the normalized unit group of the integral group ring of the Higman-Sims simple sporadic group HS. As a consequence, we confirm the Kimmerle's conjecture on prime graphs for this sporadic group.
We investigate the possible character values of torsion units of the normalized unit group of the integral group ring of Mathieu sporadic group $M_{22}$. We confirm the Kimmerle conjecture on prime graphs for this group and specify the partial augmentations for possible counterexamples to the stronger Zassenhaus conjecture.
We introduce structure theorems for the study of the unit conjecture for supersoluble group rings and apply our results to the (Passman) fours group G. We show that over any field K, the group algebra KG has no non-trivial units of length at most 3, and find that the Promislow set can never be the support of a unit in KG. We conclude our work with an introduction to the theory of "consistent chains" toward a preliminary analysis of units of higher length in KG.
The unit conjecture, commonly attributed to Kaplansky, predicts that if $K$ is a field and $G$ is a torsion-free group then the only units of the group ring $K[G]$ are the trivial units, that is, the non-zero scalar multiples of group elements. We give a concrete counterexample to this conjecture; the group is virtually abelian and the field is order two.
Let U be the group of units of an infinite twisted group algebra K_λG over a field K. We describe the maximal FC-subgroup of U and give a characterization of U with finitely conjugacy classes. In the case of group algebras we obtain the Cliff-Sehgal-Zassenhaus' theorem.
Let $G$ denote the projective special linear group $\text{PSL}(2,q)$, for a prime power $q$. It is shown that a finite 2-subgroup of the group $V(\mathbb{Z}G)$ of augmentation 1 units in the integral group ring $\mathbb{Z}G$ of $G$ is isomorphic to a subgroup of $G$. Furthermore, it is shown that a composition factor of a finite subgroup of $V(\mathbb{Z}G)$ is isomorphic to a subgroup of $G$.
In this paper, it is proved that the group generated by Bass units contains a subgroup of finite index in the group of central units $\mathcal{Z}(\mathcal{U}(\mathbb{Z}G))$ of the integral group ring $\mathbb{Z}G$ for a subgroup closed monomial group $G$ with the property that every cyclic subgroup of order not a divisor of $4$ or $6$ is subnormal in $G$. If $G$ is a generalized strongly monomial group, then it is shown that the group generated by generalized Bass units contains a subgroup of finite index in $\mathcal{Z}(\mathcal{U}(\mathbb{Z}G))$. Furthermore, for a generalized strongly monom…
We investigate the group of normalized units of the group algebra $\mathbb{Z}_{p^e}G$ of a finite abelian $p$-group $G$ over the ring $\mathbb{Z}_{p^e}$ of residues modulo $p^e$ with $e\geq 1$.
Extending the discovery by Giles Gardam of a concrete counterexample to Kaplansky's unit conjecture in characteristic 2, a family of counterexamples for every prime characteristic is presented.
Laszlo Fuchs posed the following problem in 1960, which remains open: classify the abelian groups occurring as the group of all units in a commutative ring. In this note, we provide an elementary solution to a simpler, related problem: find all cardinal numbers occurring as the cardinality of the group of all units in a commutative ring. As a by-product, we obtain a solution to Fuchs' problem for the class of finite abelian $p$-groups when $p$ is an odd prime.
Structural properties of unitary groups over local, not necessarily commutative, rings are developed, with applications to the computation of the orders of these groups (when finite) and to the degrees of the irreducible constituents of the Weil representation of a unitary group associated to a ramified extension of finite local rings.
We show that for every prime $r$ all $r$-subgroups in the normalized units of the integral group ring of $\operatorname{PSL}(2,p^3)$ are isomorphic to subgroups of $\operatorname{PSL}(2,p^3)$. This answers a question of M. Hertweck, C.R. Höfert and W. Kimmerle for this series of groups.
This paper is devoted to the units of integral group rings of cyclic $2$-groups of small orders, namely, the orders of $2^n$ for $n<8$. Immediately we should note the issues our consideration describe in the introduction in more detail. Here we will indicate the main directions of our research. Previously, we proved that the normalized group of units of an integral group ring of a cyclic 2-group of order $2^n$ contains a subgroup of finite index, which is the direct product of the subgroup of units defined by the character with the largest character field and the subgroup of units that is isom…
The theory of biset functors developed by Serge Bouc has been instrumental in the study of the unit group of the Burnside ring of a finite group, in particular for the case of p-groups. The ghost ring of the Burnside ring defines an inflation functor, and becomes a useful tool in studying the Burnside ring functor itself. We are interested in studying the unit group of another representation ring: the trivial source ring of a finite group. In this article, we show how the unit groups of the trivial source ring and its associated ghost ring define inflation functors. Since the trivial source ri…
Let $R$ be a ring with $1$ and $\J(R)$ its Jacobson radical. Then $1+\J(R)$ is a normal subgroup of the group of units, $G(R)$. The existence of a complement to this subgroup was explored in a paper by Coleman and Easdown; in particular the ring $R=\Mat_n(\Z_{p^k})$ was considered. We prove the remaining cases to determine for which $n$, $p$ and $k$ a complement exists in this ring.
We use the theory of blocks of cyclic defect to prove that under a certain condition on the principal p-block of a finite group G the normalized unit group of the integral group ring of G contains an element of order pq if and only if so does G, for q a prime different from p. Using this we verify the Prime Graph Question for all alternating and symmetric groups and also for two sporadic simple groups.
We describe the generalized Matsuda's theorem, and some results of a Burnside ring extend a partial Burnside ring. In particular, we give isomorphism between partial Burnside rings of different groups. Moreover, we consider the relationship between image of Frobenius-Wielandt homomorphism, a partial Burnside ring, and structure of a group.
We restrict the type of $2 \times 2$-matrices which can occur as simple components in the Wedderburn decomposition of the rational group algebra of a finite group. This results in a description up to commensurability of the group of units of the integral group ring $\mathbb Z G$ for all finite groups $G$ that do not have a non-commutative Frobenius complement as a quotient.
We briefly summarize the background of the HeLP-method for torsion units in group rings and present some functionality of a GAP-package implementing it.
Let $(S,*)$ be an involutive local ring and let $U(2m,S)$ be the unitary group associated to a nondegenerate skew hermitian form defined on a free $S$-module of rank $2m$. A presentation of $U(2m,S)$ is given in terms of Bruhat generators and their relations. This presentation is used to construct an explicit Weil representation of the symplectic group $Sp(2m,R)$ when $S=R$ is commutative and $*$ is the identity. When $S$ is commutative but $*$ is arbitrary with fixed ring $R$, an elementary proof that the special unitary group $SU(2m,S)$ is generated by unitary transvections is given. This is…
We show that if the Sylow $p$-subgroup of a finite group $G$ is of order $p$, then the normalized unit group of the integral group ring of $G$ contains a normalized unit of order $pq$ if and only if $G$ contains an element of order $pq$, where $q$ is any prime. We use this result to answer the Prime Graph Question for most sporadic simple groups and some simple groups of Lie type, including a new infinite series of such groups. Our methods are based on the understanding of blocks of cyclic defect and Young tableaux combinatorics.
In this note I describe the structure of the biset functor $B^\times$ sending a $p$-group $P$ to the group of units of its Burnside ring $B(P)$. In particular, I show that $B^\times$ is a rational biset functor. It follows that if $P$ is a $p$-group, the structure of $B^\times(P)$ can be read from a genetic basis of $P$: the group $B^\times(P)$ is an elementary abelian 2-group of rank equal to the number isomorphism classes of rational irreducible representations of $P$ whose type is trivial, cyclic of order 2, or dihedral.
For a saturated fusion system $\mathcal F$ on a $p$-group $S$, we study the Burnside ring of the fusion system $B(\mathcal F)$, as defined by Matthew Gelvin and Sune Reeh, which is a subring of the Burnside ring $B(S)$. We give criteria for an element of $B(S)$ to be in $B(\mathcal F)$ determined by the $\mathcal F$-automorphism groups of essential subgroups of $S$. When $\mathcal F$ is the fusion system induced by a finite group $G$ with $S$ as a Sylow $p$-group, we show that the restriction of $B(G)$ to $B(S)$ has image equal to $B(\mathcal F)$. We also show that for $p=2,$ we can gain infor…
We describe the main questions connected to torsion subgroups in the unit group of integral group rings of finite groups and algorithmic methods to attack these questions. We then prove the Zassenhaus Conjecture for Amitsur groups and prove that any normalized torsion subgroup in the unit group of an integral group of a Frobenius complement is isomorphic to a subgroup of the group base. Moreover we study the orders of torsion units in integral group rings of finite almost quasisimple groups and the existence of torsion-free normal subgroups of finite index in the unit group.
The integral group ring $\mathbb{Z} G$ of a group $G$ has only trivial central units, if the only central units of $\mathbb{Z} G$ are $\pm z$ for $z$ in the center of $G$. We show that the order of a finite solvable group $G$ with this property, can only have $2$, $3$, $5$ and $7$ as prime divisors, by linking this to inverse semi-rational groups and extending one result on this class of groups. We also classify the Frobenius groups whose integral group rings have only trivial central units.
Let O be the ring of S-integers in a number field k. We prove that if the group of units O^* is infinite then every matrix in $Γ$ = SL_2(O) is a product of at most 9 elementary matrices. This completes a long line of research in this direction. As a consequence, we obtain that $Γ$ is boundedly generated as an abstract group.
In this note we present an algorithm for the construction of the unit group of the Burnside ring $Ω(G)$ of a finite group $G$ from a list of representatives of the conjugacy classes of subgroups of G.
Cryptographic systems are derived using units in group rings. Combinations of types of units in group rings give units not of any particular type. This includes cases of taking powers of units and products of such powers and adds the complexity of the {\em discrete logarithm} problem to the system. The method enables encryption and (error-correcting) coding to be combined within one system. These group ring cryptographic systems may be combined in a neat way with existing cryptographic systems, such as RSA, and a combination has the combined strength of both systems. Examples are given.
The bifree double Burnside ring $B^Δ(G,G)$ of a finite group $G$ has a natural anti-involution. We study the group $B^Δ_\circ(G,G)$ of orthogonal units in $B^Δ(G,G)$. It is shown that this group is always finite and contains a subgroup isomorphic to $B(G)^\times\rtimes \Out(G)$, where $B(G)^\times$ denotes the unit group of the Burnside ring of $G$ and $\Out(G)$ denotes the outer automorphism group of $G$. Moreover it is shown that if $G$ is nilpotent then $B^Δ_\circ(G,G)\cong B(G)^\times\rtimes \Out(G)$. The results can be interpreted as positive answers to questions on equivalences of $p$-bl…
