Classical mechanics is presented here in a unary operator form, constructed using the binary multiplication and Poisson bracket operations that are given in a phase space formalism, then a Gibbs equilibrium state over this unary operator algebra is introduced, which allows the construction of a Hilbert space as a representation space of a Heisenberg algebra, giving a noncommutative operator algebraic variant of the Koopman-von Neumann approach. In this form, the measurement theory for unary classical mechanics can be the same as and inform that for quantum mechanics, expanding classical mechanics to include noncommutative operators so that it is close to quantum mechanics, instead of attempting to squeeze quantum mechanics into a classical mechanics mold. The measurement problem as it appears in unary classical mechanics suggests a classical signal analysis approach that can also be successfully applied to the measurement problem of quantum mechanics. The development offers elementary mathematics that allows a formal reconciliation of "collapse" and "no-collapse" interpretations of quantum mechanics.
In the paper Sci. Rep. 8, 8401 (2018), among other things, the Ermakov-Lewis invariant was constructed for the time dependent harmonic oscillator in Koopman-von Neumann mechanics. We point out that there is a simpler method that allows one to find this invariant.
This work is to consolidate current literature on Koopman-von Neumann (KvN) Mechanics into a simple and easy to understand text. KvN Mechanics is a branch of Classical Mechanics that has been recast into the mathematical language of Quantum Mechanics. KvN Mechanics utilizes a Hilbert phase space with operators to calculate the expectation values of observables of interest (expectation values such as position, momentum, etc.) It is an important tool in statistical physics and guide to illuminate the mysterious relationship between Quantum and Classical Physics. A lot of important applications o…
The Eisenhart lift establishes a fascinating connection between non-relativistic and relativistic physics, providing a space-time geometric understanding of non-relativistic Newtonian mechanics. What is still little known, however, is the fact that there is a Hilbert space representation of classical mechanics (also called Koopman-von Neumann mechanics) that attempts to give classical mechanics the same mathematical structure that quantum mechanics has. In this article, we geometrize the Koopman-von Newmann (KvN) mechanics using the Eisenhart toolkit. We then use a geometric view of KvN mechan…
Koopman operator theory has been successfully applied to problems from various research areas such as fluid dynamics, molecular dynamics, climate science, engineering, and biology. Applications include detecting metastable or coherent sets, coarse-graining, system identification, and control. There is an intricate connection between dynamical systems driven by stochastic differential equations and quantum mechanics. In this paper, we compare the ground-state transformation and Nelson's stochastic mechanics and demonstrate how data-driven methods developed for the approximation of the Koopman o…
Measurement theory in classical mechanics is investigated in the formulation of classical mechanics by Koopman and von Neumann (KvN), using Hilbert space. It is shown that the classical and the quantum measurements give different "relative interpretations" of the measurement state and the recording state of the measurement device. The uncertainty relation in classical mechanics is also derived.
The Koopman-von Neumann (KvN) theory is one where the dynamical momentum is not canonically conjugate to position, i.e., position and momentum are deconjugated. From this point of view, we show that the KvN theory arises from quantum mechanics, extracting classical equations of motion from quantum ones. However, preserving the canonical structure of the theory requires introducing ``auxiliary'' canonical conjugates to position and momentum. We show that using the KvN formulation to study the interaction between quantum and classical systems forces the auxiliary variables to take on a physical …
Based on Koopman's theory of classical wavefunctions in phase space, we present the Koopman-van Hove (KvH) formulation of classical mechanics as well as some of its properties. In particular, we show how the associated classical Liouville density arises as a momentum map associated to the unitary action of strict contact transformations on classical wavefunctions. Upon applying the Madelung transform from quantum hydrodynamics in the new context, we show how the Koopman wavefunction picture is insufficient to reproduce arbitrary classical distributions. However, this problem is entirely overco…
A recent formalism capturing the classical-quantum coupling in a Hamiltonian theory for probabilistic classical mechanics has been proposed: the Koopman-van Hove formulation. The aims of this report are twofolds. First, we rigourously expose this new framework for a non-expert audience and present a construction for the operatorial analogues to the classical angular and linear momentum operators. We then investigate the group actions generating their average as momentum maps as well as their associated dynamics. Finally, we illustrate the theory by deriving the Koopman-van Hove formulation to …

Quantum computers can be used to simulate nonlinear non-Hamiltonian classical dynamics on phase space by using the generalized Koopman-von Neumann formulation of classical mechanics. The Koopman-von Neumann formulation implies that the conservation of the probability distribution function on phase space, as expressed by the Liouville equation, can be recast as an equivalent Schrödinger equation on Hilbert space with a Hermitian Hamiltonian operator and a unitary propagator. This Schrödinger equation is linear in the momenta because it derives from a constrained Hamiltonian system with twice th…
Based on the Koopman-van Hove (KvH) formulation of classical mechanics introduced in Part I, we formulate a Hamiltonian model for hybrid quantum-classical systems. This is obtained by writing the KvH wave equation for two classical particles and applying canonical quantization to one of them. We illustrate several geometric properties of the model regarding the associated quantum, classical, and hybrid densities. After presenting the quantum-classical Madelung transform, the joint quantum-classical distribution is shown to arise as a momentum map for a unitary action naturally induced from the…
We deal with the reversible dynamics of coupled quantum and classical systems. Based on a recent proposal by the authors, we exploit the theory of hybrid quantum-classical wavefunctions to devise a closure model for the coupled dynamics in which both the quantum density matrix and the classical Liouville distribution retain their initial positive sign. In this way, the evolution allows identifying a classical and a quantum state in interaction at all times, thereby addressing a series of stringent consistency requirements. After combining Koopman's Hilbert-space method in classical mechanics w…
We give a unitary irreducible representation of the proper Poincaré group that leads to an operational version of the classical relativistic dynamics of a massive spinless particle. Unlike quantum mechanics, in this operational theory there is no uncertainty principle between position and momentum. It will be shown that the theory contains the Koopman-von Neumann formalism as a particular case, and a explicit connection with relativistic Hamiltonian mechanics will be given.
We use the Schwinger action principle to obtain the equations of motion in the Koopman-von Neumann operational version of classical mechanics. We restrict our analysis to non-dissipative systems. We show that the Schwinger action principle can be interpreted as a variational principle for velocity-independent forces.
We propose a scheme for data-driven parameterization of unresolved dimensions of dynamical systems based on the mathematical framework of quantum mechanics and Koopman operator theory. Given a system in which some components of the state are unknown, this method involves defining a surrogate system in a time-dependent quantum state which determines the fluxes from the unresolved degrees of freedom at each timestep. The quantum state is a density operator on a finite-dimensional Hilbert space of classical observables and evolves over time under an action induced by the Koopman operator. The qua…
A physically relevant unitary irreducible non-projective representation of the Galilei group is possible in the Koopman-von Neumann formulation of classical mechanics. This classical representation is characterized by the vanishing of the central charge of the Galilei algebra. This is in contrast to the quantum case where the mass plays the role of the central charge. Here we show, by direct construction, that classical mechanics also allows for a projective representation of the Galilei group where the mass is the central charge of the algebra. We extend the result to certain kind of quantum-…
This paper presents the momentum map structures which emerge in the dynamics of mixed states. Both quantum and classical mechanics are shown to possess analogous momentum map pairs. In the quantum setting, the right leg of the pair identifies the Berry curvature, while its left leg is shown to lead to more general realizations of the density operator which have recently appeared in quantum molecular dynamics. Finally, the paper shows how alternative representations of both the density matrix and the classical density are equivariant momentum maps generating new Clebsch representations for both…
An algebraic approach to the study of entanglement entropy of quantum systems is reviewed. Starting with a state on a $C^*$-algebra, one can construct a density operator describing the state in the GNS representation state. Applications of this approach to the study of entanglement measures for systems of identical particles are outlined. The ambiguities in the definition of entropy within this approach are then related to the action of unitaries in the commutant of the representation and their relation to modular theory explained.
New derivation of quantum equations from classical stochastic arguments
在上一篇文章[H。Bergeron,J.Math. [M. Born,Physics in My Generation(Pergamon Press,London,1956); E. Prugovecki,Stochastic量子力学and Quantum Spacetime(Reidel,Dordrecht,1986)],表明物理连续可观测量本质上是随机的。
The original intent of the Koopman-von Neumann formalism was to put classical and quantum mechanics on the same footing by introducing an operator formalism into classical mechanics. Here we pursue their path the opposite way and examine what transfer operators can say about quantum mechanical evolution. To that end, we introduce a physically motivated scalar wavefunction formalism for a velocity field on a 4-dimensional pseudo-Riemannian manifold, and obtain an evolution equation for the associated wavefunction, a generator for an associated weighted transfer operator. The generator of the sc…
We present a general framework of quantum error-correcting codes (QECCs) as a subspace of a complex Hilbert space and the corresponding error models. Then we illustrate how QECCs can be constructed using techniques from algebraic coding theory. Additionally, we discuss secondary constructions for QECCs, leading to propagation rules for the parameters of QECCs.
