The hierarchical organization of biological systems requires hierarchical organization of quantum states. The construction of the hierarchical space of state vectors is presented. The application of similar structures to quantum information processing is considered.

Quantum Mechanical Hysteresis and the Electron Transfer Problem

We study a simple quantum mechanical symmetric donor-acceptor model for electron transfer (ET) with coupling to internal deformations. The model contains several basic properties found in biological ET in enzymes and photosynthetic centers; it produces tunnelling with hysteresis thus providing a simple explanation for the slowness of the reversed rate and the near 100% efficiency of ET in many biological systems. The model also provides a conceptual framework for the development of molecular electronics memory elements based on electrostatic architectures.

Thermal-Light-Induced Coherent Dynamics in Atoms and Molecules -- an Exact Quantum Mechanical Treatment

The question of whether sunlight induces coherent dynamics in biological systems is under debate. Here we show, on the basis of an exact fully quantum mechanical treatment, that thermal light induces excited-state coherences in matter similar to those induced by a coherent state. We demonstrate the phenomenon on a V-type model system and a two-state Born-Oppenheimer molecular system. Remarkably, wavepacket-like dynamics is induced in the excited molecular potential-energy surface.

Metric space formulation of quantum mechanical conservation laws

We show that conservation laws in quantum mechanics naturally lead to metric spaces for the set of related physical quantities. All such metric spaces have an "onion-shell" geometry. We demonstrate the power of this approach by considering many-body systems immersed in a magnetic field, with a finite ground state current. In the associated metric spaces we find regions of allowed and forbidden distances, a "band structure" in metric space directly arising from the conservation of the $z$ component of the angular momentum.

Quantum mechanical sum rules for two model systems

Sum rules have played an important role in the development of many branches of physics since the earliest days of quantum mechanics. We present examples of one-dimensional quantum mechanical sum rules and apply them in two familiar systems, the infinite well and the single delta-function potential. Biological implications of possible unattainability of comprehensive, molecular-resolution, real-time, volume imaging of the living cell

Despite the impressive advances in biological imaging, no imaging modality today generates, in a comprehensive manner, high-resolution images of crowded molecules working deep inside the living cell in real time. Internal Time Peculiarities as a Cause of Bifurcations Arising in Classical Trajectory Problem and Quantum Chaos Creation in Three-Body System

A new formulation of the theory of quantum mechanical multichannel scattering for three-body collinear systems is proposed. It is shown, that in this simple case the principle of quantum determinism in the general case breaks down and we have a micro-irreversible quantum mechanics. A quantum mechanical scheme to reduce radiation damage in electron microscopy

We show that radiation damage to unstained biological specimens is not an intractable problem in electron microscopy. When a structural hypothesis of a specimen is available, quantum mechanical principles allow us to verify the hypothesis with a very low electron dose. Realization of such a concept requires precise control of the electron wave front. Based on a diffractive electron optical implementation, we demonstrate the feasibility of this new method by both experimental and numerical investigations.

Classical-mechanical models without observable trajectories and the Dirac electron

We construct a non-Grassmann spinning-particle model which, by analogy with quantum mechanics, does not admit the notion of a trajectory within the position space. The pseudo-classical character of the model allows us to avoid the inconsistencies arising in the quantum-mechanical interpretation of a one-particle sector of the Dirac equation.
