An $r$-uniform \textit{linear cycle} of length $\ell$, denoted by $C_{\ell}^r$, is an $r$-graph with edges $e_1, \ldots, e_{\ell}$ such that for every $i\in [\ell-1]$, $|e_i\cap e_{i+1}|=1$, $|e_{\ell}\cap e_1|=1$ and $e_i\cap e_j=\emptyset$ for all other pairs $\{i, j\},\ i\neq j$. For every $r\geq 3$ and $\ell\geq 4$, we show that there exists a constant $C$ depending on $r$ and $\ell$ such that the number of linear $r$-graphs of girth $\ell$ is at most $2^{Cn^{1+1/\lfloor \ell/2\rfloor}}$. Furthermore, we extend the result for $\ell=4$, proving that there exists a constant $C$ depending on $r$ such that the number of linear $r$-graphs without $C_{4}^r$ is at most $2^{Cn^{3/2}}$.
The idea of the proof is to reduce the hypergraph enumeration problems to some graph enumeration problems, and then apply a variant of the graph container method, which may be of independent interest. We extend a breakthrough result of Kleitman and Winston on the number of $C_4$-free graphs, proving that the number of graphs containing at most $n^2/32\log^6 n$ $C_4$'s is at most $2^{11n^{3/2}}$, for sufficiently large $n$. We further show that for every $r\geq 3$ and $\ell\geq 2$, the number of graphs such that each of its edges is contained in only $O(1)$ cycles of length at most $2\ell$, is bounded by $2^{3(\ell+1)n^{1+1/\ell}}$ asymptotically.
The search for the smallest possible $d$-regular graph of girth $g$ has a long history, and is usually known as the cage problem. This problem has a natural extension to hypergraphs, where we may ask for the smallest number of vertices in a $d$-regular, $r$-uniform hypergraph of given (Berge) girth $g$. We show that these two problems are in fact very closely linked. By extending the ideas of Cayley graphs to the hypergraph context, we find smallest known hypergraphs for various parameter sets. Because of the close link to the cage problem from graph theory, we are able to use these techniques…
A classical result of Erdős and Hajnal claims that for any integers $k, r, g \geq 2$ there is an $r$-uniform hypergraph of girth at least $g$ with chromatic number at least $k$. This implies that there are sparse hypergraphs such that in any coloring of their vertices with at most $k-1$ colors there is a monochromatic hyperedge. We show that for any integers $r, g\geq 2$ there is an $r$-uniform hypergraph of girth at least $g$ such that in any coloring of its vertices there is either a monochromatic or a rainbow (totally multicolored) edge. We give a probabilistic and a deterministic proof of …
We give lower bounds on the maximum possible girth of an $r$-uniform, $d$-regular hypergraph with at most $n$ vertices, using the definition of a hypergraph cycle due to Berge. These differ from the trivial upper bound by an absolute constant factor (viz., by a factor of between $3/2+o(1)$ and $2 +o(1)$). We also define a random $r$-uniform `Cayley' hypergraph on $S_n$ which has girth $Ω(n^{1/3})$ with high probability, in contrast to random regular $r$-uniform hypergraphs, which have constant girth with positive probability.
We introduce a new approach and prove that the maximum number of triangles in a $C_5$-free graph on $n$ vertices is at most $$(1 + o(1)) \frac{1}{3 \sqrt 2} n^{3/2}.$$ We also show a connection to $r$-uniform hypergraphs without (Berge) cycles of length less than six, and estimate their maximum possible size.
In this paper, we consider a randomized greedy algorithm for independent sets in $r$-uniform $d$-regular hypergraphs $G$ on $n$ vertices with girth $g$. By analyzing the expected size of the independent sets generated by this algorithm, we show that $α(G)\geq (f(d,r)-ε(g,d,r))n$, where $ε(g,d,r)$ converges to $0$ as $g\rightarrow\infty$ for fixed $d$ and $r$, and $f(d,r)$ is determined by a differential equation. This extends earlier results of Gamarnik and Goldberg for graphs. We also prove that when applying this algorithm to uniform linear hypergraphs with bounded degree, the size of the in…
A question of Erdős asks if for every pair of positive integers $r$ and $k$, there exists a graph $H$ having $\textrm{girth}(H)=k$ and the property that every $r$-colouring of the edges of $H$ yields a monochromatic cycle $C_k$. The existence of such graphs was confirmed by the third author and Ruciński. We consider the related numerical problem of determining the smallest such graph with this property. We show that for integers $r$ and $k$, there exists a graph $H$ on $R^{10k^2} k^{15k^3}$ vertices (where $R = R(C_k;r)$ is the $r$-colour Ramsey number for the cycle $C_k$) having $\textrm{girt…
In this paper we investigate the hypergraphs whose spectral radii attain the maximum among all uniform hypergraphs with given number of edges. In particular we characterize the hypergraph(s) with maximum spectral radius over all unicyclic hypergraphs, linear or power unicyclic hypergraphs with given girth, linear or power bicyclic hypergraphs, respectively.
An $r$-augmented tree is a rooted tree plus $r$ edges added from each leaf to ancestors. For $d,g,r\in\mathbb{N}$, we construct a bipartite $r$-augmented complete $d$-ary tree having girth at least $g$. The height of such trees must grow extremely rapidly in terms of the girth. Using the resulting graphs, we construct sparse non-$k$-choosable bipartite graphs, showing that maximum average degree at most $2(k-1)$ is a sharp sufficient condition for $k$-choosability in bipartite graphs, even when requiring large girth. We also give a new simple construction of non-$k$-colorable graphs and hyperg…
Let $F$ be a graph. We say that a hypergraph $H$ is a {\it Berge}-$F$ if there is a bijection $f : E(F) \rightarrow E(H )$ such that $e \subseteq f(e)$ for every $e \in E(F)$. Note that Berge-$F$ actually denotes a class of hypergraphs. The maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $r$-graph with no subhypergraph isomorphic to any Berge-$F$ is denoted $\ex_r(n,\textrm{Berge-}F)$. In this paper we establish new upper and lower bounds on $\ex_r(n,\textrm{Berge-}F)$ for general graphs $F$, and investigate connections between $\ex_r(n,\textrm{Berge-}F)$ and other recently studied extremal functions…
A hypergraph is simple if it has no loops and no repeated edges, and a hypergraph is linear if it is simple and each pair of edges intersects in at most one vertex. For $n\geq 3$, let $r= r(n)\geq 3$ be an integer and let $\boldsymbol{k} = (k_1,\ldots, k_n)$ be a vector of nonnegative integers, where each $k_j = k_j(n)$ may depend on $n$. Let $M = M(n) = \sum_{j=1}^n k_j$ for all $n\geq 3$, and define the set $\mathcal{I} = \{ n\geq 3 \mid r(n) \text{ divides } M(n)\}$. We assume that $\mathcal{I}$ is infinite, and perform asymptotics as $n$ tends to infinity along $\mathcal{I}$. Our main resu…
Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a family of $3$-uniform linear hypergraphs. The linear Turán number of $\mathcal F$ is the maximum possible number of edges in a $3$-uniform linear hypergraph on $n$ vertices which contains no member of $\mathcal{F}$ as a subhypergraph. In this paper we show that the linear Turán number of the five cycle $C_5$ (in the Berge sense) is $\frac{1}{3 \sqrt3}n^{3/2}$ asymptotically. We also show that the linear Turán number of the four cycle $C_4$ and $\{C_3, C_4\}$ are equal asmptotically, which is a strengthening of a theorem of Lazebnik and Verstraëte. We establish a connecti…
Grotzsch proved that every triangle-free planar graph is 3-colorable. Thomassen proved that every planar graph of girth at least five is 3-choosable. As for other surfaces, Thomassen proved that there are only finitely many 4-critical graphs of girth at least five embeddable in any fixed surface. This implies a linear-time algorithm for deciding 3-colorablity for graphs of girth at least five on any fixed surface. Dvorak, Kral and Thomas strengthened Thomassen's result by proving that the number of vertices in a 4-critical graph of girth at least five is linear in its genus. They used this res…
Let $κ'(G)$, $κ(G)$, $μ_{n-1}(G)$ and $μ_1(G)$ denote the edge-connectivity, vertex-connectivity, the algebraic connectivity and the Laplacian spectral radius of $G$, respectively. In this paper, we prove that for integers $k\geq 2$ and $r\geq 2$, and any simple graph $G$ of order $n$ with minimum degree $δ\geq k$, girth $g\geq 3$ and clique number $ω(G)\leq r$, the edge-connectivity $κ'(G)\geq k$ if $μ_{n-1}(G) \geq \frac{(k-1)n}{N(δ,g)(n-N(δ,g))}$ or if $μ_{n-1}(G) \geq \frac{(k-1)n}{φ(δ,r)(n-φ(δ,r))}$, where $N(δ,g)$ is the Moore bound on the smallest possible number of vertices such that t…
We show that the size of a 4-critical graph of girth at least five is bounded by a linear function of its genus. This strengthens the previous bound on the size of such graphs given by Thomassen. It also serves as the basic case for the description of the structure of 4-critical triangle-free graphs embedded in a fixed surface, presented in a future paper of this series.
The spectral radius of a uniform hypergraph is defined to be that of the adjacency tensor the hypergraph. It is known that the unique unicyclic hypergraph with the largest spectral radius is a nonlinear hypergraph, and the unique linear unicyclic hypergraph with the largest spectral radius is a power hypergraph. In this paper we determine the the unique linear unicyclic hypergraph with the second or third largest spectral radius, where the former hypergraph is a power hypergraph and the latter hypergraph is a non-power hypergraph.
A well-known result of Ajtai et al. from 1982 states that every $k$-graph $H$ on $n$ vertices, with girth at least five, and average degree $t^{k-1}$ contains an independent set of size $c n (\log t)^{1/(k-1)}/t$ for some $c>0$. In this paper we show that an independent set of the same size can be found under weaker conditions allowing certain cycles of length 2, 3 and 4. Our work is motivated by a problem of Lo and Zhao, who asked for $k\ge 4$, how large of an independent set a $k$-graph $H$ on $n$ vertices necessarily has when its maximum $(k-2)$-degree $Δ_{k-2}(H)\le dn$. (The corresponding…
Motivated by the Erdos-Faber Lovasz conjecture (EFL) for hypergraphs, we explore relationships between several conjectures on the edge coloring of linear hypergraphs. In particular, we are able to increase the class of hypergraphs for which EFL is true.
Extensions of Erdős-Gallai Theorem for general hypergraphs are well studied. In this work, we prove the extension of Erdős-Gallai Theorem for linear hypergraphs. In particular, we show that the number of hyperedges in an $n$-vertex $3$-uniform linear hypergraph, without a Berge path of length $k$ as a subgraph is at most $\frac{(k-1)}{6}n$ for $k\geq 4$.
We explore properties of $3$-uniform hypergraphs $H$ without linear cycles. Our main results are that these hypergraphs must contain a vertex of strong degree at most two and must have independent sets of size at least ${2|V(H)|\over 5}$.
Recently, Borodin, Kostochka, and Yancey (On $1$-improper $2$-coloring of sparse graphs. Discrete Mathematics, 313(22), 2013) showed that the vertices of each planar graph of girth at least $7$ can be $2$-colored so that each color class induces a subgraph of a matching. We prove that any planar graph of girth at least $6$ admits a vertex coloring in $2$ colors such that each monochromatic component is a path of length at most $14$. Moreover, we show a list version of this result. On the other hand, for each positive integer $t\geq 3$, we construct a planar graph of girth $4$ such that in any …
Motivated by the Erdős-Faber-Lovász (EFL) conjecture for hypergraphs, we consider the list edge coloring of linear hypergraphs. We discuss several conjectures for list edge coloring linear hypergraphs that generalize both EFL and Vizing's theorem for graphs. For example, we conjecture that in a linear hypergraph of rank 3, the list edge chromatic number is at most 2 times the maximum degree plus 1. We show that for sufficiently large fixed rank and sufficiently large degree, the conjectures are true.
Chvátal, Rödl, Szemerédi and Trotter proved that the Ramsey numbers of graphs of bounded maximum degree are linear in their order. We prove that the same holds for 3-uniform hypergraphs. The main new tool which we prove and use is an embedding lemma for 3-uniform hypergraphs of bounded maximum degree into suitable 3-uniform `pseudo-random' hypergraphs.
We propose a new model of asynchronous batch codes that allow for parallel recovery of information symbols from a coded database in an asynchronous manner, i.e. when queries arrive at random times and they take varying time to process. We show that the graph-based batch codes studied by et al. are asynchronous. Further, we demonstrate that hypergraphs of Berge girth larger or equal to 4, respectively larger or equal to 3, yield graph-based asynchronous batch codes, respectively private information retrieval (PIR) codes. We prove the hypergraph-theoretic proposition that the maximum number of h…
We prove that the maximum number of edges in a 3-uniform linear hypergraph on $n$ vertices containing no 2-regular subhypergraph is $n^{1+o(1)}$. This resolves a conjecture of Dellamonica, Haxell, Luczak, Mubayi, Nagle, Person, Rödl, Schacht and Verstraëte. We use this result to show that the maximum number of edges in a $3$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices containing no immersion of a closed surface is $n^{2+o(1)}$. Furthermore, we present results on the maximum number of edges in $k$-uniform linear hypergraphs containing no $r$-regular subhypergraph.
Here we study the spectral radii of some linear hypergraphs, that is, the maximum moduli of the eigenvalues of their corresponding adjacency matrices. We determine the hypertrees having the largest to seventh-largest spectral radii. The hypertrees with the largest and the second-largest spectral radii among all those with a given diameter are identified here. Unicyclic hypergraphs with a fixed cycle length having the largest, the second-largest, and the third-largest spectral radii are also determined. Furthermore, we also find which bicyclic and tricyclic linear hypergraphs have the largest a…
This article provides bounds on the size of a 3-uniform linear hypergraph with restricted matching number and maximum degree. In particular, we show that if a 3-uniform, linear family $\mathcal{F}$ has maximum matching size $ν$ and maximum degree $Δ$ such that $Δ\geq \frac{23}{6}ν(1+\frac{1}{ν-1})$, then $|\mathcal{F}|\leq Δν$.
Gyárfás, Győri and Simonovits proved that if a $3$-uniform hypergraph with $n$ vertices has no linear cycles, then its independence number $α\ge \frac{2n} {5}$. The hypergraph consisting of vertex disjoint copies of a complete hypergraph $K_5^3$ on five vertices, shows that equality can hold. They asked whether this bound can be improved if we exclude $K_5^3$ as a subhypergraph and whether such a hypergraph is $2$-colorable. In this paper we answer these questions affirmatively. Namely, we prove that if a $3$-uniform linear-cycle-free hypergraph doesn't contain $K_5^3$ as a subhypergraph, then…
For $n\geq 3$, let $r=r(n)\geq 3$ be an integer. A hypergraph is $r$-uniform if each edge is a set of $r$ vertices, and is said to be linear if two edges intersect in at most one vertex. In this paper, the number of linear $r$-uniform hypergraphs on $n\to\infty$ vertices is determined asymptotically when the number of edges is $m(n)=o(r^{-3}n^{ \frac32})$. As one application, we find the probability of linearity for the independent-edge model of random $r$-uniform hypergraph when the expected number of edges is $o(r^{-3}n^{ \frac32})$. We also find the probability that a random $r$-uniform lin…
Let $\mathcal{F}$ be an $r$-uniform hypergraph and $G$ be a multigraph. The hypergraph $\mathcal{F}$ is a Berge-$G$ if there is a bijection $f: E(G) \rightarrow E( \mathcal{F} )$ such that $e \subseteq f(e)$ for each $e \in E(G)$. Given a family of multigraphs $\mathcal{G}$, a hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ is said to be $\mathcal{G}$-free if for each $G \in \mathcal{G}$, $\mathcal{H}$ does not contain a subhypergraph that is isomorphic to a Berge-$G$. We prove bounds on the maximum number of edges in an $r$-uniform linear hypergraph that is $K_{2,t}$-free. We also determine an asymptotic formula fo…
Let p(k) denote the partition function of k. For each k >= 2, we describe a list of p(k)-1 quasirandom properties that a k-uniform hypergraph can have. Our work connects previous notions on linear hypergraph quasirandomness of Kohayakawa-Rödl-Skokan and Conlon-Hàn-Person-Schacht and the spectral approach of Friedman-Wigderson. For each of the quasirandom properties that are described, we define a largest and second largest eigenvalue. We show that a hypergraph satisfies these quasirandom properties if and only if it has a large spectral gap. This answers a question of Conlon-Hàn-Person-Schacht…
The $r$-uniform linear $k$-cycle $C^r_k$ is the $r$-uniform hypergraph on $k(r-1)$ vertices whose edges are sets of $r$ consecutive vertices in a cyclic ordering of the vertex set chosen in such a way that every pair of consecutive edges share exactly one vertex. Here, we prove a balanced supersaturation result for linear cycles which we then use in conjunction with the method of hypergraph containers to show that for any fixed pair of integers $r, k \ge 3$, the number of $C^r_k$-free $r$-uniform hypergraphs on $n$ vertices is $2^{Θ(n^{r-1})}$, thereby settling a conjecture due to Mubayi and W…
Chung, Graham, and Wilson proved that a graph is quasirandom if and only if there is a large gap between its first and second largest eigenvalue. Recently, the authors extended this characterization to k-uniform hypergraphs, but only for the so-called coregular k-uniform hypergraphs. In this paper, we extend this characterization to all k-uniform hypergraphs, not just the coregular ones. Specifically, we prove that if a k-uniform hypergraph satisfies the correct count of a specially defined four-cycle, then there is a gap between its first and second largest eigenvalue.
Given a tree T on v vertices and an integer k exceeding one. One can define the k-expansion T^k as a k-uniform linear hypergraph by enlarging each edge with a new, distinct set of (k-2) vertices. Then T^k has v+ (v-1)(k-2) vertices. The aim of this paper is to show that using the delta-system method one can easily determine asymptotically the size of the largest T^k-free n-vertex hypergraph, i.e., the Turan number of T^k.
Let $F$ be a graph. A hypergraph is called Berge $F$ if it can be obtained by replacing each edge in $F$ by a hyperedge containing it. Given a family of graphs $\mathcal{F}$, we say that a hypergraph $H$ is Berge $\mathcal{F}$-free if for every $F \in \mathcal{F}$, the hypergraph $H$ does not contain a Berge $F$ as a subhypergraph. In this paper we investigate the connections between spectral radius of the adjacency tensor and structural properties of a linear hypergraph. In particular, we obtain a spectral version of Turán-type problems over linear $k$-uniform hypergraphs by using spectral me…
For any given integer $r\geqslant 3$, let $k=k(n)$ be an integer with $r\leqslant k\leqslant n$. A hypergraph is $r$-uniform if each edge is a set of $r$ vertices, and is said to be linear if two edges intersect in at most one vertex. Let $A_1,\ldots,A_k$ be a given $k$-partition of $[n]$ with $|A_i|=n_i\geqslant 1$. An $r$-uniform hypergraph $H$ is called {\it $k$-partite} if each edge $e$ satisfies $|e\cap A_i|\leqslant 1$ for $1\leqslant i\leqslant k$. In this paper, the number of linear $k$-partite $r$-uniform hypergraphs on $n\to\infty$ vertices is determined asymptotically when the numbe…
The transversal number $τ(H)$ of a hypergraph $H$ is the minimum number of vertices that intersect every edge of $H$. A linear hypergraph is one in which every two distinct edges intersect in at most one vertex. A $k$-uniform hypergraph has all edges of size $k$. It is known that $τ(H) \le (n + m)/(k+1)$ holds for all $k$-uniform, linear hypergraphs $H$ when $k \in \{2,3\}$ or when $k \ge 4$ and the maximum degree of $H$ is at most two. It has been conjectured that $τ(H) \le (n+m)/(k+1)$ holds for all $k$-uniform, linear hypergraphs $H$. We disprove the conjecture for large $k$, and show that …
A hypergraph is called an r by r grid if it is isomorphic to a pattern of r horizontal and r vertical lines. Three sets form a triangle if they pairwise intersect in three distinct singletons. A hypergraph is linear if every pair of edges meet in at most one vertex. In this paper we construct large linear r-hypergraphs which contain no grids. Moreover, a similar construction gives large linear r-hypergraphs which contain neither grids nor triangles. For r at least 4 our constructions are almost optimal. These investigations are also motivated by coding theory: we get new bounds for optimal sup…
Ryser conjectured that $τ\le(r-1)ν$ for $r$-partite hypergraphs, where $τ$ is the covering number and $ν$ is the matching number. We prove this conjecture for $r\le9$ in the special case of linear intersecting hypergraphs, in other words where every pair of lines meets in exactly one vertex. Aharoni formulated a stronger version of Ryser's conjecture which specified that each $r$-partite hypergraph should have a cover of size $(r-1)ν$ of a particular form. We provide a counterexample to Aharoni's conjecture with $r=13$ and $ν=1$. We also report a number of computational results. For $r=7$, we …
For a graph $F$, we say a hypergraph $H$ is Berge-$F$ if it can be obtained from $F$ be replacing each edge of $F$ with a hyperedge containing it. We say a hypergraph is Berge-$F$-saturated if it does not contain a Berge-$F$, but adding any hyperedge creates a copy of Berge-$F$. The $k$-uniform saturation number of Berge-$F$, $\mathrm{sat}_k(n,\text{Berge-}F)$ is the fewest number of edges in a Berge-$F$-saturated $k$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices. We show that $\mathrm{sat}_k(n,\text{Berge-}F) = O(n)$ for all graphs $F$ and uniformities $3\leq k\leq 5$, partially answering a conjecture o…
An oriented k-uniform hypergraph (a family of ordered k-sets) has the ordering property (or Property O) if for every linear order of the vertex set, there is some edge oriented consistently with the linear order. We find bounds on the minimum number of edges in a hypergraph with Property O.
