For $n\geq 3$, let $r=r(n)\geq 3$ be an integer. A hypergraph is $r$-uniform if each edge is a set of $r$ vertices, and is said to be linear if two edges intersect in at most one vertex. In this paper, the number of linear $r$-uniform hypergraphs on $n\to\infty$ vertices is determined asymptotically when the number of edges is $m(n)=o(r^{-3}n^{ \frac32})$. As one application, we find the probability of linearity for the independent-edge model of random $r$-uniform hypergraph when the expected number of edges is $o(r^{-3}n^{ \frac32})$. We also find the probability that a random $r$-uniform linear hypergraph with a given number of edges contains a given subhypergraph.
A hypergraph is a $T_0$-hypergraph if for every two different vertices of the hypergraph there exists an edge containing one of the vertices and not containing the other. A general method for the enumeration of certain classes of $T_0$-hypergraphs is given. $T_0$-hypergraphs that are considered here are singled out both by the properties they themselves satisfy and by the properties that dual hypergraphs associated with them satisfy. Though in case of the so-called ordered hipergraphs the property `to be a $T_0$-hypergraph' is reduced to the property `to having different columns' of correspond…
Let $r \geq 2$ be a fixed integer. For infinitely many $n$, let $\boldsymbol{k} = (k_1,..., k_n)$ be a vector of nonnegative integers such that their sum $M$ is divisible by $r$. We present an asymptotic enumeration formula for simple $r$-uniform hypergraphs with degree sequence $k$. (Here "simple" means that all edges are distinct and no edge contains a repeated vertex.) Our formula holds whenever the maximum degree $k_{\mathrm{max}}$ satisfies $k_{\mathrm{max}}^3 = o(M)$.
We prove an asymptotic formula for the number of $k$-uniform hypergraphs with a given degree sequence, for a wide range of parameters. In particular, we find a formula that is asymptotically equal to the number of $d$-regular $k$-uniform hypergraphs on $n$ vertices provided that $dn\le c\binom{n}{k}$ for a constant $c>0$, and $3 \leq k < n^C$ for any $C<1/9.$ Our results relate the degree sequence of a random $k$-uniform hypergraph to a simple model of nearly independent binomial random variables, thus extending the recent results for graphs due to the second and third author.
We investigate extremal functions ex_e(F,n) and ex_i(F,n) counting maximum numbers of edges and maximum numbers of vertex-edge incidences in simple hypergraphs H which have n vertices and do not contain a fixed hypergraph F; the containment respects linear orderings of vertices. We determine both functions exactly if F has only distinct singleton edges or if F is one of the 55 hypergraphs with at most four incidences (we give proofs only for six cases). We prove some exact formulae and recurrences for the numbers of hypergraphs, simple and all, with n incidences and derive rough logarithmic as…
A hypergraph is simple if it has no loops and no repeated edges, and a hypergraph is linear if it is simple and each pair of edges intersects in at most one vertex. For $n\geq 3$, let $r= r(n)\geq 3$ be an integer and let $\boldsymbol{k} = (k_1,\ldots, k_n)$ be a vector of nonnegative integers, where each $k_j = k_j(n)$ may depend on $n$. Let $M = M(n) = \sum_{j=1}^n k_j$ for all $n\geq 3$, and define the set $\mathcal{I} = \{ n\geq 3 \mid r(n) \text{ divides } M(n)\}$. We assume that $\mathcal{I}$ is infinite, and perform asymptotics as $n$ tends to infinity along $\mathcal{I}$. Our main resu…
We derive an asymptotic formula for the number of connected 3-uniform hypergraphs with vertex set $[N]$ and $M$ edges for $M=N/2+R$ as long as $R$ satisfies $R = o(N)$ and $R=ω(N^{1/3}\ln^{2} N)$. This almost completely fills the gap in the range of $M$ for which the formula is known. We approach the problem using an `inside-out' approach of an earlier paper of Pittel and the second author, for connected graphs. A key part of the method uses structural components of connected hypergraphs called cores and kernels. These are structural components of connected hypergraphs. Our results also give i…
We introduce a one-person game that we call Padlock Solitaire which resembles the well-known clock solitaire card game. Analyzing variants of this game we obtain simple proofs of some classical results of combinatorics including ballot theorems and the enumeration of spanning trees in various graphs and hypergraphs.
A Deza graph $Γ$ with parameters $(v,k,b,a)$ is a $k$-regular graph with $v$ vertices such that any two distinct vertices have $b$ or $a$ common neighbours, where $b \ge a$. A Deza graph of diameter 2 which is not a strongly regular graph is called a strictly Deza graph. We find all 139 strictly Deza graphs up to 21 vertices.
We use the theory of Γ-species to enumerate k-gonal and polygonal 2-trees with respect to their vertices. We then extend this result to enumerate "succulents", a tree-like class of graphs which generalize cacti.
In this paper we enumerate the cardinalities for the set of all vertices of outdegree $\ge k$ at level $\ge \ell$ among all rooted ordered $d$-trees with $n$ edges. Our results unite and generalize several previous works in the literature.
We derive an asymptotic formula for the number of strongly connected digraphs with $n$ vertices and $m$ arcs (directed edges), valid for $m-n\to\infty$ as $n\to \infty$ provided $m=O(n\log n)$. This fills the gap between Wright's results which apply to $m=n+O(1)$, and the long-known threshold for $m$, above which a random digraph with $n$ vertices and $m$ arcs is likely to be strongly connected.
Let $G$ be a connected hypergraph with even uniformity, which contains cut vertices. Then $G$ is the coalescence of two nontrivial connected sub-hypergraphs (called branches) at a cut vertex. Let $\mathcal{A}(G)$ be the adjacency tensor of $G$. The least H-eigenvalue of $\mathcal{A}(G)$ refers to the least real eigenvalue of $\mathcal{A}(G)$ associated with a real eigenvector. In this paper we obtain a perturbation result on the least H-eigenvalue of $\mathcal{A}(G)$ when a branch of $G$ attached at one vertex is relocated to another vertex, and characterize the unique hypergraph whose least H…
In 1973 P. Erdős and L. Lovász noticed that any hypergraph whose edges are pairwise intersecting has chromatic number 2 or 3. In the first case, such hypergraph may have any number of edges. However, Erdős and Lovász proved that in the second case, the number of edges is bounded from above. For example, if a hypergraph is $ n $-uniform, has pairwise intersecting edges, and has chromatic number 3, then the number of its edges does not exceed $ n^n $. Recently D.D. Cherkashin improved this bound (see \cite{Ch}). In this paper, we further improve it in the case when the number of vertices of an $…
This paper provides the generating series for the embedding of tree-like graphs of arbitrary number of vertices, accourding to their genus. It applies and extends the techniques of Chan, where it was used to give an alternate proof of the Goulden and Slofstra formula. Furthermore, this greatly generalizes the famous Harer-Zagier formula, which computes the Euler characteristic of the moduli space of curves, and is equivalent to the computation of one vertex maps.
The \textit{domination number} $γ(\mathcal{H})$ of a hypergraph $\mathcal{H}=(V(\mathcal{H}),E(\mathcal{H})$ is the minimum size of a subset $D\subset V(\mathcal{H}$ of the vertices such that for every $v\in V(\mathcal{H})\setminus D$ there exist a vertex $d \in D$ and an edge $H\in E(\mathcal{H})$ with $v,d\in H$. We address the problem of finding the minimum number $n(k,γ)$ of vertices that a $k$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ can have if $γ(\mathcal{H})\ge γ$ and $\mathcal{H}$ does not contain isolated vertices. We prove that $$n(k,γ)=k+Θ(k^{1-1/γ})$$ and also consider the $s$-wise domina…
A total weighting of the vertices and edges of a hypergraph is called vertex-coloring if the total weights of the vertices yield a proper coloring of the graph, i.e., every edge contains at least two vertices with different weighted degrees. In this note we show that such a weighting is possible if every vertex has two, and every edge has three weights to choose from, extending a recent result on graphs to hypergraphs.
Let $H$ be a complete $r$-uniform hypergraph such that two vertices are marked in each edge as its `boundary' vertices. A linear ordering of the vertex set of $H$ is called an {\em agreeing linear order}, provided all vertices of each edge of $H$ lie between its two boundary vertices. We prove the following Helly-type theorem: if there is an {agreeing linear order} on the vertex set of every subhypergraph of $H$ with at most $2r-2$ vertices, then there is an agreeing linear order on the vertex set of $H$. We also show that the constant $2r-2$ cannot be reduced in the theorem. The case $r=3$ of…
In this paper we enumerate and give bijections for the following four sets of vertices among rooted ordered trees of a fixed size: (i) first-children of degree $k$ at level $\ell$, (ii) non-first-children of degree $k$ at level $\ell-1$, (iii) leaves having $k-1$ elder siblings at level $\ell$, and (iv) non-leaves of outdegree $k$ at level $\ell-1$. Our results unite and generalize several previous works in the literature.
Let $σ$ be a partition of the positive integer $r$. A $σ$-hypergraph $H=H(n,r,q|σ)$ is an $r$-uniform hypergraph on $nq$ vertices which are partitioned into $n$ classes $V_1, V_2, \ldots, V_n$ each containing $q$ vertices. An $r$-subset $K$ of vertices is an edge of the hypergraph if the partition of $r$ formed by the non-zero cardinalities $|K\cap V_i|, 1\leq i \leq n,$ is $σ$. In earlier works we have considered colourings of the vertices of $H$ which are constrained such that any edge has at least $α$ and at most $β$ vertices of the same colour, and we have shown that interesting results ca…
We show that for all $\ell, k, n$ with $\ell \leq k/2$ and $(k-\ell)$ dividing $n$ the following hypergraph-variant of Lehel's conjecture is true. Every $2$-edge-colouring of the $k$-uniform complete hypergraph $\mathcal{K}_n^{(k)}$ on $n$ vertices has at most two disjoint monochromatic $\ell$-cycles in different colours that together cover all but at most $4(k-\ell)$ vertices. If $\ell \leq k/3$, then at most two $\ell$-cycles cover all but at most $2(k-\ell)$ vertices. Furthermore, we can cover all vertices with at most $4$ ($3$ if $\ell\leq k/3$) disjoint monochromatic $\ell$-cycles.
In this paper we study the maximum number of hyperedges which may be in an $r$-uniform hypergraph under the restriction that no pair of vertices has more than $t$ Berge paths of length $k$ between them. When $r=t=2$, this is the even-cycle problem asking for $\mathrm{ex}(n, C_{2k})$. We extend results of Füredi and Simonovits and of Conlon, who studied the problem when $r=2$. In particular, we show that for fixed $k$ and $r$, there is a constant $t$ such that the maximum number of edges can be determined in order of magnitude.
The heterochromatic number hc(H) of a non-empty hypergraph H is the smallest integer k such that for every colouring of the vertices of H with exactly k colours, there is a hyperedge of H all of whose vertices have different colours. We denote by nu(H) the number of vertices of H and by tau(H) the size of the smallest set containing at least two vertices of each hyperedge of H. For a complete geometric graph G with n > 2 vertices let H = H(G) be the hypergraph whose vertices are the edges of G and whose hyperedges are the edge sets of plane spanning trees of G. We prove that if G has at most o…
Given a tree T on v vertices and an integer k exceeding one. One can define the k-expansion T^k as a k-uniform linear hypergraph by enlarging each edge with a new, distinct set of (k-2) vertices. Then T^k has v+ (v-1)(k-2) vertices. The aim of this paper is to show that using the delta-system method one can easily determine asymptotically the size of the largest T^k-free n-vertex hypergraph, i.e., the Turan number of T^k.
We give a simple formula for the number of hypertrees with $k$ hyperedges of given sizes and $n+1$ labelled vertices with prescribed degrees. A slight generalization of this formula counts labelled bipartite trees with prescribed degrees in each class of vertices.
The Lagrangian density of an $r$-uniform hypergraph $F$ is $r!$ multiplying the supremum of the Lagrangians of all $F$-free $r$-uniform hypergraphs. For an $r$-graph $H$ with $t$ vertices, it is clear that $π_λ(H)\ge r!λ{(K_{t-1}^r)}$. We say that an $r$-unform hypergraph $H$ with $t$ vertices is perfect if $π_λ(H)= r!λ{(K_{t-1}^r)}$. A theorem of Motzkin-Straus implies that all $2$-uniform graphs are perfect. It is interesting to explore what kind of hypergraphs are perfect. A hypergraph is linear if any 2 edges have at most 1 vertex in common. We propose the following conjecture: (1) For $r\…
The competition hypergraph $C{\cH}(D)$ of a digraph $D$ is the hypergraph such that the vertex set is the same as $D$ and $e \subseteq V(D)$ is a hyperedge if and only if $e$ contains at least 2 vertices and $e$ coincides with the in-neighborhood of some vertex $v$ in the digraph $D$. Any hypergraph with sufficiently many isolated vertices is the competition hypergraph of an acyclic digraph. The hypercompetition number $hk(\cH)$ of a hypergraph $\cH$ is defined to be the smallest number of such isolated vertices. In this paper, we study the hypercompetition numbers of hypergraphs. First, we gi…
A weighting of the edges of a hypergraph is called vertex-coloring if the weighted degrees of the vertices yield a proper coloring of the graph, i.e., every edge contains at least two vertices with different weighted degrees. In this paper we show that such a weighting is possible from the weight set {1,2,...,r+1} for all hypergraphs with maximum edge size r>3 and not containing edges solely consisting of identical vertices. The number r+1 is best possible for this statement. Further, the weight set {1,2,3,4,5} is sufficient for all hypergraphs with maximum edge size 3, up to some trivial exce…
Chen and Chvátal introduced the notion of lines in hypergraphs; they proved that every 3-uniform hypergraph with $n$ vertices either has a line that consists of all $n$ vertices or else has at least $\log_2 n$ distinct lines. We improve this lower bound by a factor of $2-o(1)$.
In previous work, we gave asymptotic counting results for the number of tree-child and normal networks with $k$ reticulation vertices and explicit exponential generating functions of the counting sequences for $k=1,2,3$. The purpose of this note is two-fold. First, we make some corrections to our previous approach which overcounted the above numbers and thus gives erroneous exponential generating functions (however, the overcounting does not effect our asymptotic counting results). Secondly, we use our (corrected) exponential generating functions to derive explicit formulas for the number of t…
This paper addresses the enumeration of rooted and unrooted hypermaps of a given genus. For rooted hypermaps the enumeration method consists of considering the more general family of multirooted hypermaps, in which darts other than the root dart are distinguished. We give functional equations for the generating series counting multirooted hypermaps of a given genus by number of darts, vertices, edges, faces and the degrees of the vertices containing the distinguished darts. We solve these equations to get parametric expressions of the generating functions of rooted hypermaps of low genus. We a…
We prove an asymptotic formula for the number of Eulerian circuits for graphs with strong mixing properties and with vertices having even degrees. The exact value is determined up to the multiplicative error $O(n^{-1/2+\varepsilon})$, where $n$ is the number of vertices
The $r$-uniform linear $k$-cycle $C^r_k$ is the $r$-uniform hypergraph on $k(r-1)$ vertices whose edges are sets of $r$ consecutive vertices in a cyclic ordering of the vertex set chosen in such a way that every pair of consecutive edges share exactly one vertex. Here, we prove a balanced supersaturation result for linear cycles which we then use in conjunction with the method of hypergraph containers to show that for any fixed pair of integers $r, k \ge 3$, the number of $C^r_k$-free $r$-uniform hypergraphs on $n$ vertices is $2^{Θ(n^{r-1})}$, thereby settling a conjecture due to Mubayi and W…
One of the De Bruijn - Erdos theorems deals with finite hypergraphs where every two vertices belong to precisely one hyperedge. It asserts that, except in the perverse case where a single hyperedge equals the whole vertex set, the number of hyperedges is at least the number of vertices and the two numbers are equal if and only if the hypergraph belongs to one of simply described families, near-pencils and finite projective planes. Chen and Chvatal proposed to define the line uv in a 3-uniform hypergraph as the set of vertices that consists of u, v, and all w such that {u,v,w} is a hyperedge. W…
We give a probabilistic construction of a $3$-uniform hypergraph on $N$ vertices with independence number $O(\log N / \log \log N)$ in which there are at most two edges among any four vertices. This bound is tight and solves a longstanding open problem of Erdős and Hajnal in Ramsey theory. We further extend this result to prove tight bounds on various other hypergraph Ramsey numbers.
By weighted tree we understand such connected tree, that: a) each its vertex and each edge have a positive integer weight; b) the weight of each vertex is equal to the sum of weights of outgoing edges. Each tree has a binary structure --- we can color its vertices in two colors, black and white so, that adjacent vertices have different colors. A type is a set of pairwise non-isotopic plane weighted trees with a given list of weights of white vertices and a given list of weights of black vertices. In this work we present a method for computing the cardinality of a given type.
Recently, Berge theta hypergraphs have received special attention due to the similarity with Berge even cycles. Let $r$-uniform Berge theta hypergraph $Θ_{\ell,t}^{B}$ be the $r$-uniform hypergraph consisting of $t$ internally disjoint Berge paths of length $\ell$ with the same pair of endpoints. In this work, we determine the Turán number of $3$-uniform Berge theta hypergraph when $\ell=3$ and $t$ is relatively small. More precisely, we provide an explicit construction giving \begin{align*} \textup{ex}_{3}(n,Θ_{3,217}^{B})=Ω(n^{\frac{4}{3}}). \end{align*} This matches an earlier upper bound b…
Let $G$ be an $r$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices such that all but at most $\varepsilon \binom{n}{\ell}$ $\ell$-subsets of vertices have degree at least $p \binom{n-\ell}{r-\ell}$. We show that $G$ contains a large subgraph with high minimum $\ell$-degree.
In this paper we introduce and study the domination game on hypergraphs. This is played on a hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ by two players, namely Dominator and Staller, who alternately select vertices such that each selected vertex enlarges the set of vertices dominated so far. The game is over if all vertices of $\mathcal{H}$ are dominated. Dominator aims to finish the game as soon as possible, while Staller aims to delay the end of the game. If each player plays optimally and Dominator starts, the length of the game is the invariant `game domination number' denoted by $γ_g(\mathcal{H})$. This def…
In this paper we study fundamental connectivity properties of hypergraphs from a graph-theoretic perspective, with the emphasis on cut edges, cut vertices, and blocks. To prepare the ground, we define various types of subhypergraphs, as well as various types of walks in a hypergraph. We then prove a number of new results involving cut edges, cut vertices, and blocks. In particular, we describe the exact relationship between the block decomposition of a hypergraph and the block decomposition of its incidence graph.
Motivated by the enumeration of a class of plane partitions studied by Proctor and by considerations about symmetry classes of plane partitions, we consider the problem of enumerating lozenge tilings of a hexagon with ``maximal staircases'' removed from some of its vertices. The case of one vertex corresponds to Proctor's problem. For two vertices there are several cases to consider, and most of them lead to nice enumeration formulas. For three or more vertices there do not seem to exist nice product formulas in general, but in one special situation a lot of factorization occurs, and we pose t…
For a graph G, a hypergraph H is called Berge-G if there is a hypergraph H', isomorphic to H, containing all vertices of G, so that e is contained in f(e) for each edge e of G, where f is a bijection between E(G) and E(H'). The set of all Berge-G hypergraphs is denoted B(G). A hypergraph H is called Berge-G saturated if it does not contain any subhypergraph from B(G), but adding any new hyperedge of size at least 2 to H creates such a subhypergraph. Each Berge-G saturated hypergraph has at least |E(G)|-1 hyperedges. We show that for each graph G that is not a certain star and for any n at leas…
We show that there is an absolute constant $c>0$ such that the following holds. For every $n > 1$, there is a 5-uniform hypergraph on at least $2^{2^{cn^{1/4}}}$ vertices with independence number at most $n$, where every set of 6 vertices induces at most 3 edges. The double exponential growth rate for the number of vertices is sharp. By applying a stepping-up lemma established by the first two authors, analogous sharp results are proved for $k$-uniform hypergraphs. This answers the penultimate open case of a conjecture in Ramsey theory posed by Erdős and Hajnal in 1972.
An oriented hypergraph is a hypergraph together with an incidence orientation such that each edge-vertex incidence is given a label of $+1$ or $-1$. An oriented hypergraph is called incidence balanced if there exists a bipartition of the vertex set such that every edge intersects one part of the bipartition in positively incident vertices with the edge and other part in negatively incident vertices with the edge. In this paper, we investigate the incidence balance of oriented hypergraphs and induced signed hypergraphs by means of the eigenvalues of associated matrices and tensors, and provide …
Let $D_2$ denote the $3$-uniform hypergraph with $4$ vertices and $2$ edges. Answering a question of Alon and Shapira, we prove an induced removal lemma for $D_2$ having polynomial bounds. We also prove an Erdős-Hajnal-type result: every induced $D_2$-free hypergraph on $n$ vertices contains a clique or an independent set of size $n^{c}$ for some absolute constant $c > 0$. In the case of both problems, $D_2$ is the only nontrivial $k$-uniform hypergraph with $k\geq 3$ which admits a polynomial bound.
For positive integers $r > \ell$, an $r$-uniform hypergraph is called an $\ell$-cycle if there exists a cyclic ordering of its vertices such that each of its edges consists of $r$ consecutive vertices, and such that every pair of consecutive edges (in the natural ordering of the edges) intersect in precisely $\ell$ vertices. Such cycles are said to be linear when $\ell = 1$, and nonlinear when $\ell > 1$. We determine the sharp threshold for nonlinear Hamiltonian cycles and show that for all $r > \ell > 1$, the threshold $p^*_{r, \ell} (n)$ for the appearance of a Hamiltonian $\ell$-cycle in t…
We describe some theoretical results on triangulations of surfaces and we develop a theory on roots, decompositions and genus-surfaces. We apply this theory to describe an algorithm to list all triangulations of closed surfaces with at most a fixed number of vertices. We specialize the theory for the case where the number of vertices is at most 11 and we get theoretical restrictions on genus-surfaces allowing us to get the list of triangulations of closed surfaces with at most 11 vertices.
Let K_4 denote the complete 3-uniform hypergraph on 4 vertices. Ajtai, Erdős, Komlós, and Szemerédi (1981) asked if there is a function ω(d) tending to infinity such that every 3-uniform, K_4-free hypergraph N vertices and average degree d has independence number at least ω(d) N/d^{1/2}. We answer this question by constructing a 3-uniform, K_4-free hypergraph with independence number at most 2N/d^{1/2}. We also provide counterexamples to several related conjectures and improve the lower bound of some hypergraph Ramsey numbers.
A random binary search tree grown from the uniformly random permutation of $[n]$ is studied. We analyze the exact and asymptotic counts of vertices by rank, the distance from the set of leaves. The asymptotic fraction $c_k$ of vertices of a fixed rank $k\ge 0$ is shown to decay exponentially with $k$. Notoriously hard to compute, the exact fractions $c_k$ had been determined for $k\le 3$ only. We computed $c_4$ and $c_5$ as well; both are ratios of enormous integers, denominator of $c_5$ being $274$ digits long. Prompted by the data, we proved that, in sharp contrast, the largest prime divisor…
We prove the well-known Brown-Erdős-Sós Conjecture for hypergraphs of large uniformity in the following form: any dense linear $r$-graph $G$ has $k$ edges spanning at most $(r-2)k+3$ vertices, provided the uniformity $r$ of $G$ is large enough given the linear density of $G$, and the number of vertices of $G$ is large enough given $r$ and $k$.
We show that for every η > 0 there exists an integer n_0 such that every 2-colouring of the 3-uniform complete hypergraph on n \geq n_0 vertices contains two disjoint monochromatic tight cycles of distinct colours that together cover all but at most ηn vertices. The same result holds if we replace tight cycles with loose cycles.
Motzkin and Straus established a close connection between the maximum clique problem and a solution (namely graph-Lagrangians) to the maximum value of a class of homogeneous quadratic multilinear functions over the standard simplex of the Euclidean space in 1965. This connection provides a new proof of Turán's theorem. Recently, an extension of Motzkin-Straus theorem was proved for non-uniform hypergraphs whose edges contain 1 or 2 vertices in \cite{PPTZ}. It is interesting if similar results hold for other non-uniform hypergraphs. In this paper, we give some connection between polynomial prog…
Let H be a 3-uniform hypergraph with N vertices. A tight Hamilton cycle C \subset H is a collection of N edges for which there is an ordering of the vertices v_1, ..., v_N such that every triple of consecutive vertices {v_i, v_{i+1}, v_{i+2}} is an edge of C (indices are considered modulo N). We develop new techniques which enable us to prove that under certain natural pseudo-random conditions, almost all edges of H can be covered by edge-disjoint tight Hamilton cycles, for N divisible by 4. Consequently, we derive the corollary that random 3-uniform hypergraphs can be almost completely packed…
