Let $r \geq 2$ be a fixed integer. For infinitely many $n$, let $\boldsymbol{k} = (k_1,..., k_n)$ be a vector of nonnegative integers such that their sum $M$ is divisible by $r$. We present an asymptotic enumeration formula for simple $r$-uniform hypergraphs with degree sequence $k$. (Here "simple" means that all edges are distinct and no edge contains a repeated vertex.) Our formula holds whenever the maximum degree $k_{\mathrm{max}}$ satisfies $k_{\mathrm{max}}^3 = o(M)$.
A hypergraph is a $T_0$-hypergraph if for every two different vertices of the hypergraph there exists an edge containing one of the vertices and not containing the other. A general method for the enumeration of certain classes of $T_0$-hypergraphs is given. $T_0$-hypergraphs that are considered here are singled out both by the properties they themselves satisfy and by the properties that dual hypergraphs associated with them satisfy. Though in case of the so-called ordered hipergraphs the property `to be a $T_0$-hypergraph' is reduced to the property `to having different columns' of correspond…
We prove an asymptotic formula for the number of $k$-uniform hypergraphs with a given degree sequence, for a wide range of parameters. In particular, we find a formula that is asymptotically equal to the number of $d$-regular $k$-uniform hypergraphs on $n$ vertices provided that $dn\le c\binom{n}{k}$ for a constant $c>0$, and $3 \leq k < n^C$ for any $C<1/9.$ Our results relate the degree sequence of a random $k$-uniform hypergraph to a simple model of nearly independent binomial random variables, thus extending the recent results for graphs due to the second and third author.
We investigate extremal functions ex_e(F,n) and ex_i(F,n) counting maximum numbers of edges and maximum numbers of vertex-edge incidences in simple hypergraphs H which have n vertices and do not contain a fixed hypergraph F; the containment respects linear orderings of vertices. We determine both functions exactly if F has only distinct singleton edges or if F is one of the 55 hypergraphs with at most four incidences (we give proofs only for six cases). We prove some exact formulae and recurrences for the numbers of hypergraphs, simple and all, with n incidences and derive rough logarithmic as…
A hypergraph is simple if it has no loops and no repeated edges, and a hypergraph is linear if it is simple and each pair of edges intersects in at most one vertex. For $n\geq 3$, let $r= r(n)\geq 3$ be an integer and let $\boldsymbol{k} = (k_1,\ldots, k_n)$ be a vector of nonnegative integers, where each $k_j = k_j(n)$ may depend on $n$. Let $M = M(n) = \sum_{j=1}^n k_j$ for all $n\geq 3$, and define the set $\mathcal{I} = \{ n\geq 3 \mid r(n) \text{ divides } M(n)\}$. We assume that $\mathcal{I}$ is infinite, and perform asymptotics as $n$ tends to infinity along $\mathcal{I}$. Our main resu…
For $n\geq 3$, let $r=r(n)\geq 3$ be an integer. A hypergraph is $r$-uniform if each edge is a set of $r$ vertices, and is said to be linear if two edges intersect in at most one vertex. In this paper, the number of linear $r$-uniform hypergraphs on $n\to\infty$ vertices is determined asymptotically when the number of edges is $m(n)=o(r^{-3}n^{ \frac32})$. As one application, we find the probability of linearity for the independent-edge model of random $r$-uniform hypergraph when the expected number of edges is $o(r^{-3}n^{ \frac32})$. We also find the probability that a random $r$-uniform lin…
We derive an asymptotic formula for the number of connected 3-uniform hypergraphs with vertex set $[N]$ and $M$ edges for $M=N/2+R$ as long as $R$ satisfies $R = o(N)$ and $R=ω(N^{1/3}\ln^{2} N)$. This almost completely fills the gap in the range of $M$ for which the formula is known. We approach the problem using an `inside-out' approach of an earlier paper of Pittel and the second author, for connected graphs. A key part of the method uses structural components of connected hypergraphs called cores and kernels. These are structural components of connected hypergraphs. Our results also give i…
We present a variant of a universality result of Rödl [On universality of graphs with uniformly distributed edges, Discrete Math. 59 (1986), no. 1-2, 125-134] for sparse, $3$-uniform hypergraphs contained in strongly jumbled hypergraphs. One of the ingredients of our proof is a counting lemma for fixed hypergraphs in sparse ``pseudorandom'' uniform hypergraphs, which is proved in the companion paper [Counting results for sparse pseudorandom hypergraphs I].
We establish a so-called counting lemma that allows embeddings of certain linear uniform hypergraphs into sparse pseudorandom hypergraphs, generalizing a result for graphs [Embedding graphs with bounded degree in sparse pseudorandom graphs, Israel J. Math. 139 (2004), 93-137]. Applications of our result are presented in the companion paper [Counting results for sparse pseudorandom hypergraphs II].
Caro, West, and Yuster studied how $r$-uniform hypergraphs can be oriented in such a way that (generalizations of) indegree and outdegree are as close to each other as can be hoped. They conjectured an existence result of such orientations for sparse hypergraphs, of which we present a proof.
Let K_4 denote the complete 3-uniform hypergraph on 4 vertices. Ajtai, Erdős, Komlós, and Szemerédi (1981) asked if there is a function ω(d) tending to infinity such that every 3-uniform, K_4-free hypergraph N vertices and average degree d has independence number at least ω(d) N/d^{1/2}. We answer this question by constructing a 3-uniform, K_4-free hypergraph with independence number at most 2N/d^{1/2}. We also provide counterexamples to several related conjectures and improve the lower bound of some hypergraph Ramsey numbers.
Chvatal, Roedl, Szemeredi and Trotter proved that the Ramsey numbers of graphs of bounded maximum degree are linear in their order. In previous work, we proved the same result for 3-uniform hypergraphs. Here we extend this result to k-uniform hypergraphs, for any integer k > 3. As in the 3-uniform case, the main new tool which we prove and use is an embedding lemma for k-uniform hypergraphs of bounded maximum degree into suitable k-uniform `quasi-random' hypergraphs.
We give a new approach to handling hypergraph regularity. This approach allows for vertex-by-vertex embedding into regular partitions of hypergraphs, and generalises to regular partitions of sparse hypergraphs. We also prove a corresponding sparse hypergraph regularity lemma.
An $r$-uniform hypergraph $H$ consists of a set of vertices $V$ and a set of edges whose elements are $r$-subsets of $V$. We define a hypertree to be a connected hypergraph which contains no cycles. A hypertree spans a hypergraph $H$ if it is a subhypergraph of $H$ which contains all vertices of $H$. Greenhill, Isaev, Kwan and McKay (2017) gave an asymptotic formula for the average number of spanning trees in graphs with given, sparse degree sequence. We prove an analogous result for $r$-uniform hypergraphs with given degree sequence $\boldsymbol{k} = (k_1,\ldots, k_n)$. Our formula holds when…
We obtain new lower bounds for the independence number of $K_r$-free graphs and linear $k$-uniform hypergraphs in terms of the degree sequence. This answers some old questions raised by Caro and Tuza \cite{CT91}. Our proof technique is an extension of a method of Caro and Wei \cite{CA79, WE79}, and we also give a new short proof of the main result of \cite{CT91} using this approach. As byproducts, we also obtain some non-trivial identities involving binomial coefficients.
Let $G$ be an $r$-uniform hypergraph. When is it possible to orient the edges of $G$ in such a way that every $p$-set of vertices has some $p$-degree equal to $0$? (The $p$-degrees generalise for sets of vertices what in-degree and out-degree are for single vertices in directed graphs.) Caro and Hansberg asked if the obvious Hall-type necessary condition is also sufficient. Our main aim is to show that this is true for $r$ large (for given $p$), but false in general. Our counterexample is based on a new technique in sparse Ramsey theory that may be of independent interest.
The spectral theory of higher-order symmetric tensors is an important tool to reveal some important properties of a hypergraph via its adjacency tensor, Laplacian tensor, and signless Laplacian tensor. Owing to the sparsity of these tensors, we propose an efficient approach to calculate products of these tensors and any vectors. Using the state-of-the-art L-BFGS approach, we develop a first-order optimization algorithm for computing H- and Z-eigenvalues of these large scale sparse tensors (CEST). With the aid of the Kurdyka-Łojasiewicz property, we prove that the sequence of iterates generated…
Fix $k \geq 3$, and let $G$ be a $k$-uniform hypergraph with maximum degree $Δ$. Suppose that for each $l = 2, ..., k-1$, every set of l vertices of G is in at most $Δ^{(k-l)/(k-1)}/f$ edges. Then the chromatic number of $G$ is $O( (Δ/\log f)^{1/(k-1)})$. This extends results of Frieze and the second author and Bennett and Bohman. A similar result is proved for 3-uniform hypergraphs where every vertex lies in few triangles. This generalizes a result of Alon, Krivelevich, and Sudakov, who proved the result for graphs. Our main new technical contribution is a deviation inequality for positive ra…
In this paper the problem of finding various spanning structures in random hypergraphs is studied. We notice that a general result of Riordan [Spanning subgraphs of random graphs, Combinatorics, Probability & Computing 9 (2000), no. 2, 125-148] can be adapted from random graphs to random $r$-uniform hypergaphs and provide sufficient conditions when a random $r$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}^{(r)}(n,p)$ contains a given spanning structure a.a.s. We also discuss several spanning structures such as cube-hypergraphs, lattices, spheres and Hamilton cycles in hypergraphs. Moreover, we study univer…
We find an asymptotic enumeration formula for the number of simple $r$-uniform hypergraphs with a given degree sequence, when the number of edges is sufficiently large. The formula is given in terms of the solution of a system of equations. We give sufficient conditions on the degree sequence which guarantee existence of a solution to this system. Furthermore, we solve the system and give an explicit asymptotic formula when the degree sequence is close to regular. This allows us to establish several properties of the degree sequence of a random $r$-uniform hypergraph with a given number of edg…
We determine an asymptotic formula for the number of labelled 2-connected (simple) graphs on $n$ vertices and $m$ edges, provided that $m-n\to\infty$ and $m=O(n\log n)$ as $n\to\infty$. This is the entire range of $m$ not covered by previous results. The proof involves determining properties of the core and kernel of random graphs with minimum degree at least 2. The case of 2-edge-connectedness is treated similarly. We also obtain formulae for the number of 2-connected graphs with given degree sequence for most (`typical') sequences. Our main result solves a problem of Wright from 1983.
We give a short proof that any k-uniform hypergraph H on n vertices with bounded degree Δhas Ramsey number at most c(Δ, k)n, for an appropriate constant c(Δ, k). This result was recently proved by several authors, but those proofs are all based on applications of the hypergraph regularity method. Here we give a much simpler, self-contained proof which uses new techniques developed recently by the authors together with an argument of Kostochka and Rödl. Moreover, our method demonstrates that, for k \geq 4, c(Δ, k) \leq 2^{2^{\Ddots^{2^{c Δ}}}}, where the tower is of height k and the constant c …
The use of tools from analysis to approach problems in graph theory has become an active area of research. Usually such methods are applied to problems involving dense graphs and hypergraphs; here we give the an extension of such methods to sparse but pseudorandom hypergraphs. We use this framework to give a proof of hypergraph removal for sub-hypergraphs of sparse random hypergraphs.
A hypergraph $G=(V,E)$ is $(k,\ell)$-sparse if no subset $V'\subset V$ spans more than $k|V'|-\ell$ hyperedges. We characterize $(k,\ell)$-sparse hypergraphs in terms of graph theoretic, matroidal and algorithmic properties. We extend several well-known theorems of Haas, Lov{á}sz, Nash-Williams, Tutte, and White and Whiteley, linking arboricity of graphs to certain counts on the number of edges. We also address the problem of finding lower-dimensional representations of sparse hypergraphs, and identify a critical behaviour in terms of the sparsity parameters $k$ and $\ell$. Our constructions e…
Given $k\ge3$ and $1\leq \ell< k$, an $(\ell,k)$-cycle is one in which consecutive edges, each of size $k$, overlap in exactly $\ell$ vertices. We study the smallest number of edges in $k$-uniform $n$-vertex hypergraphs which do not contain hamiltonian $(\ell,k)$-cycles, but once a new edge is added, such a cycle is promptly created. It has been conjectured that this number is of order $n^\ell$ and confirmed for $\ell\in\{1,k/2,k-1\}$, as well as for the upper range $0.8k\leq \ell\leq k-1$. Here we extend the validity of this conjecture to the lower-middle range $(k-1)/3\le\ell<(k-1)/2$.
We investigate the emergence of spanning structures in sparse pseudo-random $k$-uniform hypergraphs, using the following comparatively weak notion of pseudo-randomness. A $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$ on $n$ vertices is called $(p,α,ε)$-pseudo-random if for all (not necessarily disjoint) vertex subsets $A_1,\dots, A_k{\subseteq} V(H)$ with $|A_1|\cdots |A_k|{\geq}αn^{k}$ we have $$e(A_1,\dots, A_k)=(1\pmε)p |A_1|\cdots |A_k|.$$ For any linear $k$-uniform $F$ we provide a bound on $α=α(n)$ in terms of $p=p(n)$ and $F$, such that (under natural divisibility assumptions on $n$) any $k$-uniform $\big…
A vertex labeling of a hypergraph is sum distinguishing if it uses positive integers and the sums of labels taken over the distinct hyperedges are distinct. Let s(H) be the smallest integer N such that there is a sum-distinguishing labeling of H with each label at most N. The largest value of s(H) over all hypergraphs on n vertices and m hyperedges is denoted s(n,m). We prove that s(n,m) is almost-quadratic in m as long as m is not too large. More precisely, the following holds: If n < m < n^{O(1)} then s(n,m)= m^2/w(m), where w(m) is a function that goes to infinity and is smaller than any po…
Let J and J* be subsets of Z+ such that 0,1\in J and 0\in J*. For infinitely many n, let k=(k_1,..., k_n) be a vector of nonnegative integers whose sum M is even. We find an asymptotic expression for the number of multigraphs on the vertex set {1,..., n} with degree sequence given by k, such that every loop has multiplicity in J* and every non-loop edge has multiplicity in J. Equivalently, these are symmetric integer matrices with values J* allowed on the diagonal and J off the diagonal. Our expression holds when the maximum degree K satisfies K = o(M^(1/3)). We prove this result using the swi…
A central problem in extremal graph theory is to estimate, for a given graph $H$, the number of $H$-free graphs on a given set of $n$ vertices. In the case when $H$ is not bipartite, fairly precise estimates on this number are known. In particular, thirty years ago, Erdős, Frankl, and Rödl proved that there are $2^{(1+o(1))\text{ex}(n,H)}$ such graphs. In the bipartite case, however, nontrivial bounds have been proven only for relatively few special graphs $H$. We make a first attempt at addressing this enumeration problem for a general bipartite graph $H$. We show that an upper bound of $2^{O…
We establish that in the large degree limit, the value of certain optimization problems on sparse random hypergraphs is determined by an appropriate Gaussian optimization problem. This approach was initiated in Dembo et. al.(2016) for extremal cuts of graphs. The usefulness of this technique is further illustrated by deriving the optimal value for Max $q$-cut on Erdős-Rényi and random regular graphs, Max XORSAT on Erdős-Rényi hypergraphs, and the min-bisection for the Stochastic Block Model.
Given a positive integer $n$ and an $r$-uniform hypergraph (or $r$-graph for short) $F$, the Turan number $ex(n,F)$ of $F$ is the maximum number of edges in an $r$-graph on $n$ vertices that does not contain $F$ as a subgraph. The extension $H^F $ of $F$ is obtained as follows: For each pair of vertices $v_i,v_j$ in $F$ not contained in an edge of $F$, we add a set $B_{ij}$ of $r-2$ new vertices and the edge $\{v_i,v_j\} \cup B_{ij}$, where the $B_{ij}$ 's are pairwise disjoint over all such pairs $\{i,j\}$. Let $K^r_p$ denote the complete $r$-graph on $p$ vertices. For all sufficiently large …
For $n\geq 3$ and $r=r(n) \geq 3$, let $\boldsymbol{k} =\boldsymbol{k}(n)=(k_1, \ldots, k_n)$ be a sequence of non-negative integers with sum $M(\boldsymbol{k})=\sum_{j=1}^{n} k_j$. We assume that $M(\boldsymbol{k})$ is divisible by $r$ for infinitely many values of $n$, and restrict our attention to these values. Let $X=X(n)$ be a simple $r$-uniform hypergraph on the vertex set $V=\{v_1,v_2, \ldots, v_n\}$ with $t$ edges and maximum degree $x_{\max}$. We denote by $\mathcal{H}_r(\boldsymbol{k})$ the set of all simple $r$-uniform hypergraphs on the vertex set $V$ with degree sequence $\boldsym…
We consider some variants of the Gowers box norms, introduced by Hatami, and show their relevance in the context of sparse hypergraphs. Our main results are the following. Firstly, we prove a generalized von Neumann theorem for $L_p$ graphons. Secondly, we give natural examples of pseudorandom families, that is, sparse weighted uniform hypergraphs which satisfy relative versions of the counting and removal lemmas.
We study sparse hypergraphs which satisfy a mild pseudorandomness condition known as $L_p$ regularity. We prove appropriate regularity and counting lemmas, and we extend the relative removal lemma of Tao in this setting. This answers a question of Borgs, Chayes, Cohn and Zhao.
We consider a space of sparse Boolean matrices of size $n \times n$, which have finite co-rank over $GF(2)$ with high probability. In particular, the probability such a matrix has full rank, and is thus invertible, is a positive constant with value about $0.2574$ for large $n$. The matrices arise as the vertex-edge incidence matrix of 1-out 3-uniform hypergraphs The result that the null space is finite, can be contrasted with results for the usual models of sparse Boolean matrices, based on the vertex-edge incidence matrix of random $k$-uniform hypergraphs. For this latter model, the expected …
We give an upper bound on the list chromatic number of a 2-colorable hypergraph which generalizes the bound of Schauz on $k$-partite $k$-uniform hypergraphs. It makes sense for sparse hypergraphs: in particular we show that a $k$-uniform $k$-regular hypergraph has the list chromatic number 2 for $k \geq 4$. Also we obtain both lower and upper bound on the list chromatic number of a complete $s$-uniform 2-colorable hypergraph in the vein of Erd{\H o}s--Rubin--Taylor theorem.
For fixed integers $r\ge 3, e\ge 3$, and $v\ge r+1$, let $f_r(n,v,e)$ denote the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $r$-uniform hypergraph in which the union of arbitrary $e$ distinct edges contains at least $v+1$ vertices. In 1973, Brown, Erdős and Sós proved that $f_r(n,er-(e-1)k,e)=Θ(n^k)$ and conjectured that the limit $\lim_{n\rightarrow\infty}\frac{f_3(n,e+2,e)}{n^2}$ always exists for all fixed integers $e\ge 3$. In 2020 Shangguan and Tamo conjectured that the limit $\lim_{n\rightarrow\infty}\frac{f_r(n,er-(e-1)k,e)}{n^k}$ always exists for all fixed integers $r>k\ge 2$ and $e\ge …

We consider the community detection problem in sparse random hypergraphs. Angelini et al. (2015) conjectured the existence of a sharp threshold on model parameters for community detection in sparse hypergraphs generated by a hypergraph stochastic block model. We solve the positive part of the conjecture for the case of two blocks: above the threshold, there is a spectral algorithm which asymptotically almost surely constructs a partition of the hypergraph correlated with the true partition. Our method is a generalization to random hypergraphs of the method developed by Massoulié (2014) for spa…
Let $f_r(n,v,e)$ denote the maximum number of edges in an $r$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices, in which the union of any $e$ distinct edges contains at least $v+1$ vertices. The study of $f_r(n,v,e)$ was initiated by Brown, Erd{ő}s and S{ó}s more than forty years ago. In the literature, the following conjecture is well known. Conjecture: $n^{k-o(1)}<f_r(n,er-(e-1)k+1,e)=o(n^k)$ holds for all fixed integers $r>k\ge 2$ and $e\ge 3$ as $n\rightarrow\infty$. For $r=3, e=3, k=2$, the bound $n^{2-o(1)}<f_3(n,6,3)=o(n^2)$ was proved by the celebrated (6,3)-theorem of Ruzsa and Szemer{é}di. In this…
We present a simple mechanism, which can be randomised, for constructing sparse $3$-uniform hypergraphs with strong expansion properties. These hypergraphs are constructed using Cayley graphs over $\mathbb{Z}_2^t$ and have vertex degree which is polylogarithmic in the number of vertices. Their expansion properties, which are derived from the underlying Cayley graphs, include analogues of vertex and edge expansion in graphs, rapid mixing of the random walk on the edges of the skeleton graph, uniform distribution of edges on large vertex subsets and the geometric overlap property.
We prove that any quasirandom uniform hypergraph $H$ can be approximately decomposed into any collection of bounded degree hypergraphs with almost as many edges. In fact, our results also apply to multipartite hypergraphs and even to the sparse setting when the density of $H$ quickly tends to $0$ in terms of the number of vertices of $H$. Our results answer and address questions of Kim, Kühn, Osthus and Tyomkyn; and Glock, Kühn and Osthus as well as Keevash. The provided approximate decompositions exhibit strong quasirandom properties which is very useful for forthcoming applications. Our resu…
Let $G_n$ be the binomial random graph $G(n,p=c/n)$ in the sparse regime, which as is well-known undergoes a phase transition at $c=1$. Lynch (Random Structures Algorithms, 1992) showed that for every first order sentence $ϕ$, the limiting probability that $G_n$ satisfies $ϕ$ as $n\to\infty$ exists, and moreover it is an analytic function of $c$. In this paper we consider the closure $\overline{L_c}$ in $[0,1]$ of the set $L_c$ of all limiting probabilities of first order sentences in $G_n$. We show that there exists a critical value $c_0 \approx0.93$ such that $\overline{L_c}= [0,1]$ when $c …
For fixed integers $r>k\ge 2,e\ge 3$, let $f_r(n,er-(e-1)k,e)$ be the maximum number of edges in an $r$-uniform hypergraph in which the union of any $e$ distinct edges contains at least $er-(e-1)k+1$ vertices. A classical result of Brown, Erdős and Sós in 1973 showed that $f_r(n,er-(e-1)k,e)=Θ(n^k).$ The degenerate Turán density is defined to be the limit (if it exists) $$π(r,k,e):=\lim_{n\rightarrow\infty}\frac{f_r(n,er-(e-1)k,e)}{n^k}.$$ Extending a recent result of Glock for the special case of $r=3,k=2,e=3$, we show that $$π(r,2,3):=\lim_{n\rightarrow\infty}\frac{f_r(n,3r-4,3)}{n^2}=\frac{…
A classical result of Erdős and Hajnal claims that for any integers $k, r, g \geq 2$ there is an $r$-uniform hypergraph of girth at least $g$ with chromatic number at least $k$. This implies that there are sparse hypergraphs such that in any coloring of their vertices with at most $k-1$ colors there is a monochromatic hyperedge. We show that for any integers $r, g\geq 2$ there is an $r$-uniform hypergraph of girth at least $g$ such that in any coloring of its vertices there is either a monochromatic or a rainbow (totally multicolored) edge. We give a probabilistic and a deterministic proof of …
