We give an upper bound on the list chromatic number of a 2-colorable hypergraph which generalizes the bound of Schauz on $k$-partite $k$-uniform hypergraphs. It makes sense for sparse hypergraphs: in particular we show that a $k$-uniform $k$-regular hypergraph has the list chromatic number 2 for $k \geq 4$. Also we obtain both lower and upper bound on the list chromatic number of a complete $s$-uniform 2-colorable hypergraph in the vein of Erd{\H o}s--Rubin--Taylor theorem.
We study a model of random uniform hypergraphs, where a random instance is obtained by adding random edges to a large hypergraph of a given density. We obtain a tight bound on the number of random edges required to ensure non-2-colorability. We prove that for any k-uniform hypergraph with Omega(n^{k-epsilon}) edges, adding omega(n^{k epsilon/2}) random edges makes the hypergraph almost surely non-2-colorable. This is essentially tight, since there is a 2-colorable hypergraph with Omega(n^{k-ε}) edges which almost surely remains 2-colorable even after adding o(n^{k ε/ 2}) random edges.
The problem of 2-coloring uniform hypergraphs has been extensively studied over the last few decades. An n-uniform hypergraph is not 2-colorable if its vertices can't be colored with two colors, Red and Blue, such that every hyperedge contains Red as well as Blue vertices. The least possible number of hyperedges in an n-uniform hypergraph which is not 2-colorable is denoted by m(n). In this paper, we consider the problem of finding an upper bound on m(n) for small values of n. We provide constructions which improve the existing results for some such values of n. We obtain the first improvement…
In order to solve a question on list coloring of planar graphs, Dvořák and Postle introduced the concept of so called DP-coloring, thereby extending the concept of list-coloring. DP-coloring was anaylized in detail by Bernshteyn, Kostochka, and Pron for graphs and multigraphs; they characterized DP-degree colorable multigraphs and deduced a Brooks' type result from this. The characterization of the corresponding 'bad' covers was later given by Kim and Ozeki. In this paper, the concept of DP-colorings is extended to hypergraphs having multiple (hyper-)edges. We characterize the DP-degree colora…
Let $r\geq2$ and $r$ be even. An $r$-hypergraph $G$ on $n$ vertices is called odd-colorable if there exists a map $φ:[n]\rightarrow\lbrack r]$ such that for any edge $\{j_{1},j_{2},\cdots,j_{r}\}$ of $G$, we have $φ(j_{1})+φ(j_{2})+\cdot\cdot\cdot+φ(j_{r})\equiv r/2(\operatorname{mod}r).$ In this paper, we first determine that, if $r=2^{q}(2t+1)$ and $n\ge 2^{q}(2^{q}-1)r$, then the maximum chromatic number in the class of the odd-colorable $r$-hypergraphs on $n$ vertices is $2^q$, which answers a question raised by V. Nikiforov recently in [V. Nikiforov, Hypergraphs and hypermatrices with sym…
Given a fixed integer $n$, we prove Ramsey-type theorems for the classes of all finite ordered $n$-colorable graphs, finite $n$-colorable graphs, finite ordered $n$-chromatic graphs, and finite $n$-chromatic graphs.
A hypergraph is said to be properly 2-colorable if there exists a 2-coloring of its vertices such that no hyperedge is monochromatic. On the other hand, a hypergraph is called non-2-colorable if there exists at least one monochromatic hyperedge in each of the possible 2-colorings of its vertex set. Let m(n) denote the minimum number of hyperedges in a non-2-colorable n-uniform hypergraph. Establishing the lower and upper bounds on m(n) is a well-studied research direction over several decades. In this paper, we present new constructions for non-2-colorable n-uniform hypergraphs. These construc…
Gerards and Seymour conjectured that every graph with no odd $K_t$ minor is $(t-1)$-colorable. This is a strengthening of the famous Hadwiger's Conjecture. Geelen et al. proved that every graph with no odd $K_t$ minor is $O(t\sqrt{\log t})$-colorable. Using the methods the present authors and Postle recently developed for coloring graphs with no $K_t$ minor, we make the first improvement on this bound by showing that every graph with no odd $K_t$ minor is $O(t(\log t)^β)$-colorable for every $β> 1/4$.
A proper vertex coloring of a graph is equitable if the sizes of color classes differ by at most one. The equitable chromatic number of a graph $G$, denoted by $χ_=(G)$, is the minimum $k$ such that $G$ is equitably $k$-colorable. The equitable chromatic threshold of a graph $G$, denoted by $χ_=^*(G)$, is the minimum $t$ such that $G$ is equitably $k$-colorable for $k\ge t$. We develop a formula and a linear-time algorithm which compute the equitable chromatic threshold of an arbitrary complete multipartite graph.
The star chromatic index of a multigraph $G$, denoted $χ'_{s}(G)$, is the minimum number of colors needed to properly color the edges of $G$ such that no path or cycle of length four is bi-colored. A multigraph $G$ is star $k$-edge-colorable if $χ'_{s}(G)\le k$. Dvořák, Mohar and Šámal [Star chromatic index, J. Graph Theory 72 (2013), 313--326] proved that every subcubic multigraph is star $7$-edge-colorable. They conjectured in the same paper that every subcubic multigraph should be star $6$-edge-colorable. In this paper, we first prove that it is NP-complete to determine whether $χ'_s(G)\le3…
Hadwiger Conjecture has been an open problem for over a half century1,6, which says that there is at most a complete graph Kt but no Kt+1 for every t-colorable graph. A few cases of Hadwiger Conjecture, such as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6-colorable graphs have been completely proved to convince all1-5, but the proofs are tremendously difficult for over the 5-colorable graph6,7. Although the development of graph theory inspires scientists to understand graph coloring deeply, it is still an open problem for over 7-colorable graphs6,7. Therefore, we put forward a brand new chromatic graph configuration and …
Kierstead, Szemerédi, and Trotter showed that a graph with at most $\lfloor r/(2n)\rfloor^n$ vertices such that each ball of radius $r$ in it is $c$-colorable should have chromatic number at most $n(c-1)+1$. We show that this estimate is sharp in $r$. Namely, for every $n$, $r$, and $c$ we construct a graph $G$ containing $O((2rc)^{n-1}c)$ vertices such that $χ(G)\geq n(c-1)+1$, although each ball of radius $r$ in $G$ is $c$-colorable. The core idea is the construction of a graph whose neighborhood complex is homotopy equivalent to the join of neighborhood complexes of two given graphs.
In this paper, we prove that $(-\infty, 0)$ is a zero-free interval for chromatic polynomials of a family ${\cal L}_0$ of hypergraphs and $(0, 1)$ is a zero-free interval for chromatic polynomials of a subfamily ${\cal L}_0'$ of ${\cal L}_0$ of hypergraphs. These results extend known results on zero-free intervals of chromatic polynomials of graphs and hypergraphs.
We estimate the likely values of the chromatic and independence numbers of the random $r$-uniform $d$-regular hypergraph on $n$ vertices for fixed $r$, large fixed $d$, and $n \rightarrow \infty$.
In this paper, we present some properties on chromatic polynomials of hypergraphs which do not hold for chromatic polynomials of graphs. We first show that chromatic polynomials of hypergraphs have all integers as their zeros and contain dense real zeros in the set of real numbers. We then prove that for any multigraph $G=(V,E)$, the number of totally cyclic orientations of $G$ is equal to the value of $|P(H,-1)|$, where $P(H,λ)$ is the chromatic polynomial of a hypergraph $H$ which is constructed from $G$. Finally we show that the multiplicity of root "$0$" of $P(H,λ)$ may be at least $2$ for…
A hole is an induced cycle of length at least 4. A graph is called a pentagraph if it has no cycles of length 3 or 4 and has no holes of odd length at least 7, and is called a heptagraph if it has no cycles of length less than 7 and has no holes of odd length at least 9. Let $ł\ge 2$ be an integer. The current authors proved that a graph is 4- colorable if it has no cycles of length less than $2ł+1$ and has no holes of odd length at least $2ł+3$. Confirming a conjecture of Plummer and Zha, Chudnovsky and Seymour proved that every pentagraph is 3-colorable. Following their idea, we show that ev…
Let F be an r-uniform hypergraph. The chromatic threshold of the family of F-free, r-uniform hypergraphs is the infimum of all non-negative reals c such that the subfamily of F-free, r-uniform hypergraphs H with minimum degree at least $c \binom{|V(H)|}{r-1}$ has bounded chromatic number. The study of chromatic thresholds of various graphs has a long history, beginning with the early work of Erdős-Simonovits. One interesting question, first proposed by Łuczak-Thomassé and then solved by Allen-Böttcher-Griffiths-Kohayakawa-Morris, is the characterization of graphs having zero chromatic threshol…
Beginning with the concepts of orientation for a 3-hypergraph and transitivity for an oriented 3-hypergraph, it is natural to study the class of comparability 3-hypergraphs (those that can be transitively oriented). In this work we show three different behaviors in respect to the relationship between the chromatic number and the clique number of a comparability 3-hypergraph, this is in contrast with the fact that a comparability simple graph is a perfect graph.
It was conjectured by Ohba and confirmed recently by Noel et al. that, for any graph $G$, if $|V(G)|\le 2χ(G)+1$ then $χ_l(G)=χ(G)$. This indicates that the graphs with high chromatic number are chromatic-choosable. We show that this is also the case for uniform hypergraphs and further propose a generalized version of Ohba's conjecture: for any $r$-uniform hypergraph $H$ with $r\geq 2$, if $|V(H)|\le rχ(H)+r-1$ then $χ_l(H)=χ(H)$. We show that the condition of the proposed conjecture is sharp by giving two classes of $r$-uniform hypergraphs $H$ with $|V(H)|= rχ(H)+r$ and $χ_l(H)>χ(H)$. To supp…
We establish a set of recursion relations for the coefficients in the chromatic polynomial of a graph or a hypergraph. As an application we provide a generalization of Whitney's broken cycle theorem for hypergraphs, as well as deriving an explicit formula for the linear coefficient of the chromatic polynomial of the $r$-complete hypergraph in terms of roots of the Taylor polynomials for the exponential function.
In this paper, we consider multivariate hyperedge elimination polynomials and multivariate chromatic polynomials for hypergraphs. The first set of polynomials is defined in terms of a deletion-contraction-extraction recurrence, previously investigated for graphs by Averbouch, Godlin, and Makowsky. The multivariate chromatic polynomial is an equivalent polynomial defined in terms of colorings, and generalizes the coboundary polynomial of Crapo, and the bivariate chromatic polynomial of Dohmen, Pönitz and Tittman. We show that specializations of these new polynomials recover polynomials which en…
We characterize the r-graph with maximal p-spectral radius among the k-partite r-graphs of order n, and the 3-graph with maximal p-spectral radius among the k-chromatic 3-graphs of order n.
Let $G = (V,E)$ be a finite, simple, connected graph with chromatic polynomial $P_G(q)$. Sokal \cite{sokal} proved that the roots of the chromatic polynomial of $G$ are bounded in absolute value by $KD$ where, $D$ is the maximum degree of the graph and $7< K < 8$ is a constant. In this paper we generalize this result to uniform hypergraphs. To prove our results we will use the theory of the bounded exponential type graph polynomials.
The problem of computing the chromatic number of Kneser hypergraphs has been extensively studied over the last 40 years and the fractional version of the chromatic number of Kneser hypergraphs is only solved for particular cases. The \emph{$(p,q)$-extremal problem} consists in finding the maximum number of edges on a $k$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ with $n$ vertices such that among any $p$ edges some $q$ of them have no empty intersection. In this paper we have found a link between the fractional chromatic number of Kneser hypergraphs and the $(p,q)$-extremal problem and also solve the $(…
We show that every planar graph $G$ has a 2-fold 9-coloring. In particular, this implies that $G$ has fractional chromatic number at most $\frac92$. This is the first proof (independent of the 4 Color Theorem) that there exists a constant $k<5$ such that every planar $G$ has fractional chromatic number at most $k$.

The paper deals with an extremal problem concerning equitable colorings of uniform hyper\-graph. Recall that a vertex coloring of a hypergraph $H$ is called proper if there are no monochro-matic edges under this coloring. A hypergraph is said to be equitably $r$-colorable if there is a proper coloring with $r$ colors such that the sizes of any two color classes differ by at most one. In the present paper we prove that if the number of edges $|E(H)|\leq 0.01\left(\frac{n}{\ln n}\right)^{\frac {r-1}{r}}r^{n-1}$ then the hypergraph $H$ is equitably $r$-colorable provided $r<\sqrt[5]{\ln n}$.
Let F be a family of r-uniform hypergraphs. The chromatic threshold of F is the infimum of all non-negative reals c such that the subfamily of F comprising hypergraphs H with minimum degree at least $c \binom{|V(H)|}{r-1}$ has bounded chromatic number. This parameter has a long history for graphs (r=2), and in this paper we begin its systematic study for hypergraphs. Łuczak and Thomassé recently proved that the chromatic threshold of the so-called near bipartite graphs is zero, and our main contribution is to generalize this result to r-uniform hypergraphs. For this class of hypergraphs, we al…
In 1973 P. Erdős and L. Lovász noticed that any hypergraph whose edges are pairwise intersecting has chromatic number 2 or 3. In the first case, such hypergraph may have any number of edges. However, Erdős and Lovász proved that in the second case, the number of edges is bounded from above. For example, if a hypergraph is $ n $-uniform, has pairwise intersecting edges, and has chromatic number 3, then the number of its edges does not exceed $ n^n $. Recently D.D. Cherkashin improved this bound (see \cite{Ch}). In this paper, we further improve it in the case when the number of vertices of an $…
We consider the following game, played on a $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$. There are $q$ colors available and two players take it in turns to color vertices. A partial coloring is proper if no edge is mono-chromatic. One player, A, wishes to color all the vertices and the other player, B, wishes to prevent this. The {\em game chromatic number} $χ_g(H)$ is the minimum number of colors for which A has a winning strategy. We consider this in the context of a random $k$-uniform hypergraph and prove upper and lower bounds that hold w.h.p.
Recently, Kupavskii~[{\it On random subgraphs of {K}neser and {S}chrijver graphs. J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, {\rm 2016}.}] investigated the chromatic number of random Kneser graphs $\KG_{n,k}(ρ)$ and proved that, in many cases, the chromatic numbers of the random Kneser graph $\KG_{n,k}(ρ)$ and the Kneser graph $\KG_{n,k}$ are almost surely closed. He also marked the studying of the chromatic number of random Kneser hypergraphs $\KG^r_{n,k}(ρ)$ as a very interesting problem. With the help of $\Z_p$-Tucker lemma, a combinatorial generalization of the Borsuk-Ulam theorem, we generalize Kupavskii'…
A graph is called to be uniquely list colorable, if it admits a list assignment which induces a unique list coloring. We study uniquely list colorable graphs with a restriction on the number of colors used. In this way we generalize a theorem which characterizes uniquely 2-list colorable graphs. We introduce the uniquely list chromatic number of a graph and make a conjecture about it which is a generalization of the well known Brooks' theorem.
Let $S=\{n_1,n_2,...,n_t\}$ be a finite set of positive integers with $\min(S)\geq 3$ and $t\geq 2$. For any positive integers $s_1,s_2,...,s_t$, we construct a family of 3-uniform bi-hypergraphs ${\cal H}$ with the feasible set $S$ and $r_{n_i}=s_i, i=1,2,...,t$, where each $r_{n_i}$ is the $n_i$th component of the chromatic spectrum of ${\cal H}$. As a result, we solve one open problem for 3-uniform bi-hypergraphs proposed by Bujtás and Tuza in 2008. Moreover, we find a family of sub-hypergraphs with the same feasible set and the same chromatic spectrum as it's own. In particular, we obtain …
Wegner conjectured in 1977 that the square of every planar graph with maximum degree at most $3$ is $7$-colorable. We prove this conjecture using the discharging method and computational techniques to verify reducible configurations.
Let $V(n,k,s)$ be the set of $k$-subsets $S$ of $[n]$ such that for all $i,j\in S$, we have $|i-j|\geq s$ We define almost $s$-stable Kneser hypergraph $KG^r{{[n]}\choose k}_{s{\tiny{\textup{-stab}}}}^{\displaystyle\sim}$ to be the $r$-uniform hypergraph whose vertex set is $V(n,k,s)$ and whose edges are the $r$-uples of disjoint elements of $V(n,k,s)$. With the help of a $Z_p$-Tucker lemma, we prove that, for $p$ prime and for any $n\geq kp$, the chromatic number of almost 2-stable Kneser hypergraphs $KG^p {{[n]}\choose k}_{2{\tiny{\textup{-stab}}}}^{\displaystyle\sim}$ is equal to the chroma…
We reprove the results on the hardness of approximating hypergraph coloring using a different technique based on bounds on the size of extremal $t$-agreeing families of $[q]^n$. Specifically, using theorems of Frankl-Tokushige [FT99], Ahlswede-Khachatrian [AK98] and Frankl [F76] on the size of such families, we give simple and unified proofs of quasi NP-hardness of the following problems: $\bullet$ coloring a $3$ colorable $4$-uniform hypergraph with $(\log n)^δ$ many colors $\bullet$ coloring a $3$ colorable $3$-uniform hypergraph with $\tilde{O}(\sqrt{\log \log n})$ many colors $\bullet$ col…
We discuss the minimal number of vertices in a graph with a large chromatic number such that each ball of a fixed radius in it has a small chromatic number. It is shown that for every graph $G$ on $\sim((n+rc)/(c+rc))^{r+1}$ vertices such that each ball of radius $r$ is properly $c$-colorable, we have $χ(G)\leq n$.
In this paper, we continue the study of $2$-colorings in hypergraphs. A hypergraph is $2$-colorable if there is a $2$-coloring of the vertices with no monochromatic hyperedge. It is known (see Thomassen [J. Amer. Math. Soc. 5 (1992), 217--229]) that every $4$-uniform $4$-regular hypergraph is $2$-colorable. Our main result in this paper is a strengthening of this result. For this purpose, we define a vertex in a hypergraph $H$ to be a free vertex in $H$ if we can $2$-color $V(H) \setminus \{v\}$ such that every hyperedge in $H$ contains vertices of both colors (where $v$ has no color). We prov…
We show that for every graph $G$ and every graph $H$ obtained by subdividing each edge of $G$ at least $O(\log |V(G)|)$, $H$ is nonrepetitively 3-colorable. In fact, we show that $O(\log π'(G))$ subdivisions per edge are enough, where $π'(G)$ is the nonrepetitive chromatic index of $G$. This answers a question of Wood and improves a similar result of Pezarski and Zmarz that stated the existence of at least one 3-colorable division with a linear number of subdivision vertices per edge.
It is well known that a graph is bipartite if and only if the spectrum of its adjacency matrix is symmetric. In the present paper, this assertion is dissected into three separate matrix results of wider scope, which are extended also to hypermatrices. To this end the concept of bipartiteness is generalized by a new monotone property of cubical hypermatrices, called odd-colorable matrices. It is shown that a nonnegative symmetric $r$-matrix $A$ has a symmetric spectrum if and only if $r$ is even and $A$ is odd-colorable. This result also solves a problem of Pearson and Zhang about hypergraphs w…
Let $m(n,r)$ denote the minimal number of edges in an $n$-uniform hypergraph which is not $r$-colorable. It is known that for a fixed $n$ one has \[ c_n r^n < m(n,r) < C_n r^n. \] We prove that for any fixed $n$ the sequence $a_r := m(n,r)/r^n$ has a limit, which was conjectured by Alon. We also prove the list colorings analogue of this statement.
It's well known that every planar graph is $4$-colorable. A toroidal graph is a graph that can be embedded on a torus. It's proved that every toroidal graph is $7$-colorable. A proper coloring of a graph is called \emph{odd} if every non-isolated vertex has at least one color that appears an odd number of times in its neighborhood. The smallest number of colors that admits an odd coloring of a graph $ G $ is denoted by $χ_{o}(G)$. In this paper, we prove that if $G$ is tortoidal, then $χ_{o}\left({G}\right)\le9$; Note that $K_7$ is a toroidal graph, the upper bound is no less than $7$.
A coloring is called $s$-wide if no walk of length $2s-1$ connects vertices of the same color. A graph is $s$-widely colorable with $t$ colors if and only if it admits a homomorphism into a universal graph $W(s,t)$. Tardif observed that the value of the $r^{\rm th}$ multichromatic number $χ_r(W(s,t))$ of these graphs is at least $t+2(r-1)$ and equality holds for $r=s=2$. He asked whether there is equality also for $r=s=3$. We show that $χ_s(W(s,t))=t+2(s-1)$ for all $s$ thereby answering Tardif's question. We observe that for large $r$ (with respect to $s$ and $t$ fixed) we cannot have equalit…
The family $D(k,m)$ of graphs having an orientation such that for every vertex $v \in V(G)$ either (outdegree) $°^+(v) \le k$ or (indegree) $°^-(v) \le m$ have been investigated recently in several papers because of the role $D(k,m)$ plays in the efforts to estimate the maximum directed cut in digraphs and the minimum cover of digraphs by directed cuts. Results concerning the chromatic number of graphs in the family $D(k,m)$ have been obtained via the notion of $d$-degeneracy of graphs. In this paper we consider a far reaching generalization of the family $D(k,m)$, in a complementary form, int…
Let G(n,d) be the random d-regular graph on n vertices. For any integer k exceeding a certain constant k_0 we identify a number d_{k-col} such that G(n,d) is k-colorable w.h.p. if d<d_{k-col} and non-k-colorable w.h.p. if d>d_{k-col}.
The generalized Kneser hypergraph $KG^{r}(n,k,s)$ is the hypergraph whose vertices are all the $k$-subsets of $\{1,\ldots ,n\}$, and edges are $r$-tuples of distinct vertices such that any pair of them has at most $s$ elements in their intersection. In this note, we show that for each non-negative integers $k, n, r, s$ satisfying $n \geq r(k-1)+1$, $k > s\geq 0$, and $r\geq 2$, we have $$χ({KG}^{r}(n,k,s))\geq\left\lceil\frac{n-r(k-s-1)}{r-1}\right\rceil,$$ which improves the previously known result by Alon--Frankl--Lovász.
The main purpose of this note is to give a counterexample to the following conjecture, raised by Florian Frick [\textit{Int. Math. Res. Not. IMRN 2020 (13), 4037-4061 (2020)}]. Conjecture. Let $r\geq 3$ and let $\mathcal{F}$ be a set system. Then $$χ\left(\textrm{KG}^r\left(\mathcal{F}_{r-stab}\right)\right)\geq\left\lceil\frac{cd_r\left(\mathcal{F}\right)}{r-1}\right\rceil.$$
In this paper, in view of $Z_p$-Tucker lemma, we introduce a lower bound for chromatic number of Kneser hypergraphs which improves Dol'nikov-K{ř}{\'ı}{ž} bound. Next, we introduce multiple Kneser hypergraphs and we specify the chromatic number of some multiple Kneser hypergraphs. For a vector of positive integers $\vec{s}=(s_1,s_2,\ldots,s_m)$ and a partition $π=(P_1,P_2,\ldots,P_m)$ of $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$, the multiple Kneser hypergraph ${\rm KG}^r(π; \vec{s};k)$ is a hypergraph with the vertex set $$V=\left\{A:\ A\subseteq P_1\cup P_2\cup\cdots \cup P_m,\ |A|=k, \forall 1\leq i\leq m;\ |A\cap…
Gyárfás, Győri and Simonovits proved that if a $3$-uniform hypergraph with $n$ vertices has no linear cycles, then its independence number $α\ge \frac{2n} {5}$. The hypergraph consisting of vertex disjoint copies of a complete hypergraph $K_5^3$ on five vertices, shows that equality can hold. They asked whether this bound can be improved if we exclude $K_5^3$ as a subhypergraph and whether such a hypergraph is $2$-colorable. In this paper we answer these questions affirmatively. Namely, we prove that if a $3$-uniform linear-cycle-free hypergraph doesn't contain $K_5^3$ as a subhypergraph, then…
Kneser's 1955 conjecture -- proven by Lovász in 1978 -- asserts that in any partition of the $k$-subsets of $\{1, 2, \dots, n\}$ into $n-2k-3$ parts, one part contains two disjoint sets. Schrijver showed that one can restrict to significantly fewer $k$-sets and still observe the same intersection pattern. Alon, Frankl, and Lovász proved a different generalization of Kneser's conjecture for $r$ pairwise disjoint sets. Dolnikov generalized Lovász' result to arbitrary set systems, while Kříž did the same for the $r$-fold extension of Kneser's conjecture. Here we prove a common generalization of a…
Let G be a graph with n vertices, and let k be an integer dividing n. G is said to be strongly k-colorable if for every partition of V(G) into disjoint sets V_1 \cup ... \cup V_r, all of size exactly k, there exists a proper vertex k-coloring of G with each color appearing exactly once in each V_i. In the case when k does not divide n, G is defined to be strongly k-colorable if the graph obtained by adding k \lceil n/k \rceil - n isolated vertices is strongly k-colorable. The strong chromatic number of G is the minimum k for which G is strongly k-colorable. In this paper, we study the behavior…
For any $r$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ with $m$ ($\geq 2$) edges, let $P(\mathcal{H},k)$ and $P_l(\mathcal{H},k)$ be the chromatic polynomial and the list-color function of $\mathcal{H}$ respectively, and let $ρ(\mathcal{H})$ denote the minimum value of $|e\setminus e'|$ among all pairs of distinct edges $e,e'$ in $\mathcal{H}$. We will show that if $r\ge3$, $ρ(\mathcal{H})\ge 2$ and $m\ge \frac{ρ(\mathcal{H})^3}2+1$, then $P_l(\mathcal{H},k)=P(\mathcal{H},k)$ holds for all integers $k\geq \frac{2.4(m-1)}{ρ(\mathcal{H})\log(m-1)}$.
Using a $Z_q$-generalization of a theorem of Ky Fan, we extend to Kneser hypergraphs a theorem of Simonyi and Tardos that ensures the existence of multicolored complete bipartite graphs in any proper coloring of a Kneser graph. It allows to derive a lower bound for the local chromatic number of Kneser hypergraphs (using a natural definition of what can be the local chromatic number of a hypergraph).
More than 50 years ago Hedetniemi conjectured that the chromatic number of categorical product of two graphs is equal to the minimum of their chromatic numbers. This conjecture has received a considerable attention in recent years. Hedetniemi's conjecture were generalized to hypergraphs by Zhu in 1992. Hajiabolhassan and Meunier (2016) introduced the first nontrivial lower bound for the chromatic number of categorical product of general Kneser hypergraphs and using this lower bound, they verified Zhu's conjecture for some families of hypergraphs. In this paper, we shall present some colorful t…
