We prove that any quasirandom uniform hypergraph $H$ can be approximately decomposed into any collection of bounded degree hypergraphs with almost as many edges. In fact, our results also apply to multipartite hypergraphs and even to the sparse setting when the density of $H$ quickly tends to $0$ in terms of the number of vertices of $H$. Our results answer and address questions of Kim, Kühn, Osthus and Tyomkyn; and Glock, Kühn and Osthus as well as Keevash.
The provided approximate decompositions exhibit strong quasirandom properties which is very useful for forthcoming applications. Our results also imply approximate solutions to natural hypergraph versions of long-standing graph decomposition problems, as well as several decomposition results for (quasi)random simplicial complexes into various more elementary simplicial complexes such as triangulations of spheres and other manifolds.
Chung and Graham began the systematic study of k-uniform hypergraph quasirandom properties soon after the foundational results of Thomason and Chung-Graham-Wilson on quasirandom graphs. One feature that became apparent in the early work on k-uniform hypergraph quasirandomness is that properties that are equivalent for graphs are not equivalent for hypergraphs, and thus hypergraphs enjoy a variety of inequivalent quasirandom properties. In the past two decades, there has been an intensive study of these disparate notions of quasirandomness for hypergraphs, and an open problem that has emerged i…
Let p(k) denote the partition function of k. For each k >= 2, we describe a list of p(k)-1 quasirandom properties that a k-uniform hypergraph can have. Our work connects previous notions on linear hypergraph quasirandomness of Kohayakawa-Rödl-Skokan and Conlon-Hàn-Person-Schacht and the spectral approach of Friedman-Wigderson. For each of the quasirandom properties that are described, we define a largest and second largest eigenvalue. We show that a hypergraph satisfies these quasirandom properties if and only if it has a large spectral gap. This answers a question of Conlon-Hàn-Person-Schacht…
We show that, for a natural notion of quasirandomness in $k$-uniform hypergraphs, any quasirandom $k$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices with constant edge density and minimum vertex degree $Ω(n^{k-1})$ contains a loose Hamilton cycle. We also give a construction to show that a $k$-uniform hypergraph satisfying these conditions need not contain a Hamilton $\ell$-cycle if $k-\ell$ divides $k$. The remaining values of $\ell$ form an interesting open question.
We investigate extremal problems for quasirandom hypergraphs. We say that a $3$-uniform hypergraph $H=(V,E)$ is $(d,η)$-quasirandom if for any subset $X\subseteq V$ and every set of pairs $P\subseteq V\times V$ the number of pairs $(x,(y,z))\in X\times P$ with $\{x,y,z\}$ being a hyperedge of $H$ is in the interval $d|X||P|\pmη|V|^3$. We show that for any $\varepsilon>0$ there exists $η>0$ such that every sufficiently large $(1/2+\varepsilon,η)$-quasirandom hypergraph contains a tetrahedron, i.e., four vertices spanning all four hyperedges. A known random construction shows that the density $1…
Chung, Graham, and Wilson proved that a graph is quasirandom if and only if there is a large gap between its first and second largest eigenvalue. Recently, the authors extended this characterization to k-uniform hypergraphs, but only for the so-called coregular k-uniform hypergraphs. In this paper, we extend this characterization to all k-uniform hypergraphs, not just the coregular ones. Specifically, we prove that if a k-uniform hypergraph satisfies the correct count of a specially defined four-cycle, then there is a gap between its first and second largest eigenvalue.
For each of the notions of hypergraph quasirandomness that have been studied, we identify a large class of hypergraphs F so that every quasirandom hypergraph H admits a perfect F-packing. An informal statement of a special case of our general result for 3-uniform hypergraphs is as follows. Fix an integer r >= 4 and 0<p<1. Suppose that H is an n-vertex triple system with r|n and the following two properties: * for every graph G with V(G)=V(H), at least p proportion of the triangles in G are also edges of H, * for every vertex x of H, the link graph of x is a quasirandom graph with density at le…
Let k >= 2 and F be a linear k-uniform hypergraph with v vertices. We prove that if n is sufficiently large and v|n, then every quasirandom k-uniform hypergraph on n vertices with constant edge density and minimum degree $Ω(n^{k-1})$ admits a perfect F-packing. The case k = 2 follows immediately from the blowup lemma of Komlós, Sárközy, and Szemerédi. We also prove positive results for some nonlinear F but at the same time give counterexamples for rather simple F that are close to being linear. Finally, we address the case when the density tends to zero, and prove (in analogy with the graph ca…
An $n$-vertex graph $G$ of edge density $p$ is considered to be quasirandom if it shares several important properties with the random graph $G(n,p)$. A well-known theorem of Chung, Graham and Wilson states that many such `typical' properties are asymptotically equivalent and, thus, a graph $G$ possessing one such property automatically satisfies the others. In recent years, work in this area has focused on uncovering more quasirandom graph properties and on extending the known results to other discrete structures. In the context of hypergraphs, however, one may consider several different notio…
We examine the correspondence between the various notions of quasirandomness for k-uniform hypergraphs and sigma-algebras related to measurable hypergraphs. This gives a uniform formulation of most of the notions of quasirandomness for dense hypergraphs which have been studied, with each notion of quasirandomness corresponding to a sigma-algebra defined by a collection of subsets of [1,k]. We associate each notion of quasirandomness I with a collection of hypergraphs, the I-adapted hypergraphs, so that G is quasirandom exactly when it contains roughly the correct number of copies of each I-ada…
Extremal problems for $3$-uniform hypergraphs are known to be very difficult and despite considerable effort the progress has been slow. We suggest a more systematic study of extremal problems in the context of quasirandom hypergraphs. We say that a $3$-uniform hypergraph $H=(V,E)$ is weakly $(d,η)$-quasirandom if for any subset $U\subseteq V$ the number of hyperedges of $H$ contained in $U$ is in the interval $d\binom{|U|}{3}\pmη|V|^3$. We show that for any $\varepsilon>0$ there exists $η>0$ such that every sufficiently large weakly $(1/4+\varepsilon,η)$-quasirandom hypergraph contains four v…
We employ the absorbing-path method in order to prove two results regarding the emergence of tight Hamilton cycles in the so called {\em two-path} or {\em cherry}-quasirandom $3$-graphs. Our first result asserts that for any fixed real $α>0$, cherry-quasirandom $3$-graphs of sufficiently large order $n$ having minimum $2$-degree at least $α(n-2)$ have a tight Hamilton cycle. Our second result concerns the minimum $1$-degree sufficient for such $3$-graphs to have a tight Hamilton cycle. Roughly speaking, we prove that for every $d,α>0$ satisfying $d + α>1$, any sufficiently large $n$-vertex suc…
Motivated by longstanding conjectures regarding decompositions of graphs into paths and cycles, we prove the following optimal decomposition results for random graphs. Let $0<p<1$ be constant and let $G\sim G_{n,p}$. Let $odd(G)$ be the number of odd degree vertices in $G$. Then a.a.s. the following hold: (i) $G$ can be decomposed into $\lfloorΔ(G)/2\rfloor$ cycles and a matching of size $odd(G)/2$. (ii) $G$ can be decomposed into $\max\{odd(G)/2,\lceilΔ(G)/2\rceil\}$ paths. (iii) $G$ can be decomposed into $\lceilΔ(G)/2\rceil$ linear forests. Each of these bounds is best possible. We actually…
We show that a quasirandom $k$-uniform hypergraph $G$ has a tight Euler tour subject to the necessary condition that $k$ divides all vertex degrees. The case when $G$ is complete confirms a conjecture of Chung, Diaconis and Graham from 1989 on the existence of universal cycles for the $k$-subsets of an $n$-set.
We describe a method that we believe may be foundational for a comprehensive theory of generalised Turan problems. The cornerstone of our approach is a quasirandom counting lemma for quasirandom hypergraphs, which extends the standard counting lemma by not only counting copies of a particular configuration but also showing that these copies are evenly distributed. We demonstrate the power of the method by proving a conjecture of Mubayi on the codegree threshold of the Fano plane, that any 3-graph on n vertices for which every pair of vertices is contained in more than n/2 edges must contain a …
Given a sufficiently large and sufficiently dense bipartite graph $G=(A, B; E),$ we present a novel method for decomposing the majority of the edges of $G$ into quasirandom graphs so that the vertex sets of these quasirandom graphs partition the majority of $A.$ The method works for relatively small or sparse graphs, and can be used to substitute the Regularity lemma of Szemerédi in some graph embedding problems.
We first note that a result of Gowers on product-free sets in groups has an unexpected consequence: If k is the minimal degree of a representation of the finite group G, then for every subset B of G with $|B| > |G| / k^{1/3}$ we have B^3 = G. We use this to obtain improved versions of recent deep theorems of Helfgott and of Shalev concerning product decompositions of finite simple groups, with much simpler proofs. On the other hand, we prove a version of Jordan's theorem which implies that if k>1, then G has a proper subgroup of index at most ck^2 for some absolute constant c, hence a product-…
In this paper it is established that a decomposition of a 3-uniform hypergraph K_v^{(3)} into a special kind of hypergraph K_4^{(3)}+e exists if and only if v\equiv 0,1,2 (mod 5) and v\geq 7.
We solve the existence problem for $F$-designs for arbitrary $r$-uniform hypergraphs~$F$. This implies that given any $r$-uniform hypergraph~$F$, the trivially necessary divisibility conditions are sufficient to guarantee a decomposition of any sufficiently large complete $r$-uniform hypergraph into edge-disjoint copies of~$F$, which answers a question asked e.g.~by Keevash. The graph case $r=2$ was proved by Wilson in 1975 and forms one of the cornerstones of design theory. The case when~$F$ is complete corresponds to the existence of block designs, a problem going back to the 19th century, w…
Let $H$ be a 3-uniform hypergraph. A tournament $T$ defined on $V(T)=V(H)$ is a realization of $H$ if the edges of $H$ are exactly the 3-element subsets of $V(T)$ that induce 3-cycles. We characterize the 3-uniform hypergraphs that admit realizations by using a suitable modular decomposition.
We survey recent advances in the theory of graph and hypergraph decompositions, with a focus on extremal results involving minimum degree conditions. We also collect a number of intriguing open problems, and formulate new ones.
The perfect matching polytope, i.e. the convex hull of (incidence vectors of) perfect matchings of a graph is used in many combinatorial algorithms. Kotzig, Lovász and Plummer developed a decomposition theory for graphs with perfect matchings and their corresponding polytopes known as the tight cut decomposition which breaks down every graph into a number of indecomposable graphs, so called bricks. For many properties that are of interest on graphs with perfect matchings, including the description of the perfect matching polytope, it suffices to consider these bricks. A key result by Lovász on…
We give a new proof of König's theorem and generalize the Gallai-Edmonds decomposition to balanced hypergraphs in two different ways. Based on our decompositions we give two new characterizations of balanced hypergraphs and show some properties of matchings and vertex cover in balanced hypergraphs.
Our main result is that every graph $G$ on $n\ge 10^4r^3$ vertices with minimum degree $δ(G) \ge (1 - 1 / 10^4 r^{3/2} ) n$ has a fractional $K_r$-decomposition. Combining this result with recent work of Barber, Kühn, Lo and Osthus leads to the best known minimum degree thresholds for exact (non-fractional) $F$-decompositions for a wide class of graphs~$F$ (including large cliques). For general $k$-uniform hypergraphs, we give a short argument which shows that there exists a constant $c_k>0$ such that every $k$-uniform hypergraph $G$ on $n$ vertices with minimum codegree at least $(1- c_k /r^{…
Kim, Kühn, Osthus and Tyomkyn (Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 371 (2019), 4655--4742) greatly extended the well-known blow-up lemma of Komlós, Sárközy and Szemerédi by proving a `blow-up lemma for approximate decompositions' which states that multipartite quasirandom graphs can be almost decomposed into any collection of bounded degree graphs with the same multipartite structure and slightly fewer edges. This result has already been used by Joos, Kim, Kühn and Osthus to prove the tree packing conjecture due to Gyárfás and Lehel from 1976 and Ringel's conjecture from 1963 for bounded degree trees as w…
We prove that for any integer $k\geq 2$ and $\varepsilon>0$, there is an integer $\ell_0\geq 1$ such that any $k$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices with minimum codegree at least $(1/2+\varepsilon)n$ has a fractional decomposition into tight cycles of length $\ell$ ($\ell$-cycles for short) whenever $\ell\geq \ell_0$ and $n$ is large in terms of $\ell$. This is essentially tight. This immediately yields also approximate integral decompositions for these hypergraphs into $\ell$-cycles. Moreover, for graphs this even guarantees integral decompositions into $\ell$-cycles and solves a problem pos…
We show that $3$-graphs on $n$ vertices whose codegree is at least $(2/3 + o(1))n$ can be decomposed into tight cycles and admit Euler tours, subject to the trivial necessary divisibility conditions. We also provide a construction showing that our bounds are best possible up to the $o(1)$ term. All together, our results answer in the negative some recent questions of Glock, Joos, Kühn, and Osthus.
In 1973 Bermond, Germa, Heydemann and Sotteau conjectured that if $n$ divides $\binom{n}{k}$, then the complete $k$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices has a decomposition into Hamilton Berge cycles. Here a Berge cycle consists of an alternating sequence $v_1,e_1,v_2,\dots,v_n,e_n$ of distinct vertices $v_i$ and distinct edges $e_i$ so that each $e_i$ contains $v_i$ and $v_{i+1}$. So the divisibility condition is clearly necessary. In this note, we prove that the conjecture holds whenever $k \ge 4$ and $n \ge 30$. Our argument is based on the Kruskal-Katona theorem. The case when $k=3$ was alre…
For an $r$-uniform hypergraph $H$, let $f(H)$ be the minimum number of complete $r$-partite $r$-uniform subhypergraphs of $H$ whose edge sets partition the edge set of $H$. For a graph $G$, $f(G)$ is the bipartition number of $G$ which was introduced by Graham and Pollak in 1971. In 1988, Erdős conjectured that if $G \in G(n,1/2)$, then with high probability $f(G)=n-α(G)$, where $α(G)$ is the independence number of $G$. This conjecture and related problems have received a lot of attention recently. In this paper, we study the value of $f(H)$ for a typical $r$-uniform hypergraph $H$. More preci…
In 1981, Alspach conjectured that the complete graph $ K_{n} $ could be decomposed into cycles of arbitrary lengths, provided that the obvious necessary conditions would hold. This conjecture was proved completely by Bryant, Horsley and Pettersson in 2014. Moreover, in 1983, Tarsi conjectured that the obvious necessary conditions for packing pairwise edge-disjoint paths of arbitrary lengths in the complete multigraphs were also sufficient. The conjecture was confirmed by Bryant in 2010. In this paper, we investigate an analogous problem as the decomposition of the complete uniform multi-hyperg…
Weighted hypergraphs are generalizations of weighted simplicial complexes. In recent years, weighted Laplacians of weighted simplicial complexes have been studied. In 2016, as a generalization of the homology of simplicial complexes, the embedded homology of hypergraphs was constructed. In this paper, we generalize the weighted Laplacians of weighted simplicial complexes to weighted hypergraphs. We study the relations between the weighted Laplacians and the weighted embedded homology of weighted hypergraphs. We generalize the Hodge decompositions of weighted simplicial complexes to weighted hy…
The aim of this paper is to generalize the notion of the coloring complex of a graph to hypergraphs. We present three different interpretations of those complexes -- a purely combinatorial one and two geometric ones. It is shown, that most of the properties, which are known to be true for coloring complexes of graphs, break down in this more general setting, e.g., Cohen-Macaulayness and partitionabilty. Nevertheless, we are able to provide bounds for the $f$- and $h$-vectors of those complexes which yield new bounds on chromatic polynomials of hypergraphs. Moreover, it is shown that the colori…
We show that every sufficiently large r-regular digraph G which has linear degree and is a robust outexpander has an approximate decomposition into edge-disjoint Hamilton cycles, i.e. G contains a set of r-o(r) edge-disjoint Hamilton cycles. Here G is a robust outexpander if for every set S which is not too small and not too large, the `robust' outneighbourhood of S is a little larger than S. This generalises a result of Kühn, Osthus and Treglown on approximate Hamilton decompositions of dense regular oriented graphs. It also generalises a result of Frieze and Krivelevich on approximate Hamilt…
The bounded degree complex $BD(G,λ)$ is a generalization of the matching complexes of a graph. In this paper, we show that the bounded degree complex of a forest is shellable, by using independence complexes of hypergraphs. We obtain a wedge decomposition result of bounded degree complexes when a graph $G$ has a leaf
We solve the existence problem for $F$-designs for arbitrary $r$-uniform hypergraphs $F$. In particular, this shows that, given any $r$-uniform hypergraph $F$, the trivially necessary divisibility conditions are sufficient to guarantee a decomposition of any sufficiently large complete $r$-uniform hypergraph $G=K_n^{(r)}$ into edge-disjoint copies of $F$, which answers a question asked e.g. by Keevash. The graph case $r=2$ forms one of the cornerstones of design theory and was proved by Wilson in 1975. The case when $F$ is complete corresponds to the existence of block designs, a problem going…
A colouring of a hypergraph's vertices is polychromatic if every hyperedge contains at least one vertex of each colour; the polychromatic number is the maximum number of colours in such a colouring. Its dual, the cover-decomposition number, is the maximum number of disjoint hyperedge-covers. In geometric hypergraphs, there is extensive work on lower-bounding these numbers in terms of their trivial upper bounds (minimum hyperedge size and degree); our goal here is to broaden the study beyond geometric settings. We obtain algorithms yielding near-tight bounds for three families of hypergraphs: b…
A hypergraph is said to be $1$-Sperner if for every two hyperedges the smallest of their two set differences is of size one. We present several applications of $1$-Sperner hypergraphs and their structure to graphs. In particular, we consider the classical characterizations of threshold and domishold graphs and use them to obtain further characterizations of these classes in terms of $1$-Spernerness, thresholdness, and $2$-asummability of their vertex cover, clique, dominating set, and closed neighborhood hypergraphs. Furthermore, we apply a decomposition property of $1$-Sperner hypergraphs to …
Given $n$ subspaces of a finite-dimensional vector space over a fixed finite field $\mathbb F$, we wish to find a "branch-decomposition" of these subspaces of width at most $k$ that is a subcubic tree $T$ with $n$ leaves mapped bijectively to the subspaces such that for every edge $e$ of $T$, the sum of subspaces associated to the leaves in one component of $T-e$ and the sum of subspaces associated to the leaves in the other component have the intersection of dimension at most $k$. This problem includes the problems of computing branch-width of $\mathbb F$-represented matroids, rank-width of g…
Minimal cellular resolutions of the edge ideals of cointerval hypergraphs are constructed. This class of d-uniform hypergraphs coincides with the complements of interval graphs (for the case d=2), and strictly contains the class of `strongly stable' hypergraphs corresponding to pure shifted simplicial complexes. The polyhedral complexes supporting the resolutions are described as certain spaces of directed graph homomorphisms, and are realized as subcomplexes of mixed subdivisions of the Minkowski sums of simplices. Resolutions of more general hypergraphs are obtained by considering decomposit…
We prove several results on approximate decompositions of edge-coloured quasirandom graphs into rainbow spanning structures. More precisely, we say that an edge-colouring of a graph is locally $\ell$-bounded if no vertex is incident to more than $\ell$ edges of any given colour, and that it is (globally) $g$-bounded if no colour appears more than $g$ times in the colouring. Note that every proper colouring of an $n$-vertex graph is locally $1$-bounded, and (globally) $n/2$-bounded. Our results imply the following: (i) The existence of approximate decompositions of edge-coloured $K_n$ into rain…
