We investigate the emergence of spanning structures in sparse pseudo-random $k$-uniform hypergraphs, using the following comparatively weak notion of pseudo-randomness. A $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$ on $n$ vertices is called $(p,α,ε)$-pseudo-random if for all (not necessarily disjoint) vertex subsets $A_1,\dots, A_k{\subseteq} V(H)$ with $|A_1|\cdots |A_k|{\geq}αn^{k}$ we have $$e(A_1,\dots, A_k)=(1\pmε)p |A_1|\cdots |A_k|.$$ For any linear $k$-uniform $F$ we provide a bound on $α=α(n)$ in terms of $p=p(n)$ and $F$, such that (under natural divisibility assumptions on $n$) any $k$-uniform $\big(p,α, o(1)\big)$-pseudo-random $n$-vertex hypergraph $H$ with a mild minimum vertex degree condition contains an $F$-factor. The approach also enables us to establish the existence of loose Hamilton cycles in sufficiently pseudo-random hypergraphs and all results imply corresponding bounds for stronger notions of hypergraph pseudo-randomness such as jumbledness or large spectral gap.
As a consequence, $\big(p,α, o(1)\big)$-pseudo-random $k$-graphs as above contain: $(i)$ a perfect matching if $α=o(p^{k})$ and $(ii)$ a loose Hamilton cycle if $α=o(p^{k-1})$. This extends the works of Lenz--Mubayi, and Lenz--Mubayi--Mycroft who studied the analogous problems in the dense setting.
Inspired by the study of loose cycles in hypergraphs, we define the \emph{loose core} in hypergraphs as a structure which mirrors the close relationship between cycles and $2$-cores in graphs. We prove that in the $r$-uniform binomial random hypergraph $H^r(n,p)$, the order of the loose core undergoes a phase transition at a certain critical threshold and determine this order, as well as the number of edges, asymptotically in the subcritical and supercritical regimes. Our main tool is an algorithm called CoreConstruct, which enables us to analyse a peeling process for the loose core. By analys…
We investigate minimum vertex degree conditions for $3$-uniform hypergraphs which ensure the existence of loose Hamilton cycles. A loose Hamilton cycle is a spanning cycle in which only consecutive edges intersect and these intersections consist of precisely one vertex. We prove that every $3$-uniform $n$-vertex ($n$ even) hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ with minimum vertex degree $δ_1(\mathcal{H})\geq \left(\frac7{16}+o(1)\right)\binom{n}{2}$ contains a loose Hamilton cycle. This bound is asymptotically best possible.
In the random hypergraph $H_{n,p;k}$ each possible $k$-tuple appears independently with probability $p$. A loose Hamilton cycle is a cycle in which every pair of adjacent edges intersects in a single vertex. We prove that if $p n^{k-1}/\log n$ tends to infinity with $n$ then $$\lim_{\substack{n\to \infty 2(k-1) |n}}\Pr(H_{n,p;k}\ contains\ a\ loose\ Hamilton\ cycle)=1.$$ This is asymptotically best possible.
In the random hypergraph H=H(n,p;3) each possible triple appears independently with probability p. A loose Hamilton cycle can be described as a sequence of edges {x_i,y_i,x_{i+1}\} for i=1,2,...,n/2. We prove that there exists an absolute constant K>0 such that if p>K\log n/n^2 then lim_{n->oo 4 |n}}Pr(H(n,p;3) contains a loose Hamilton cycle)=1.
We show that for every η > 0 there exists an integer n_0 such that every 2-colouring of the 3-uniform complete hypergraph on n \geq n_0 vertices contains two disjoint monochromatic tight cycles of distinct colours that together cover all but at most ηn vertices. The same result holds if we replace tight cycles with loose cycles.
We prove that any k-uniform hypergraph on n vertices with minimum degree at least n/(2(k-1))+o(n) contains a loose Hamilton cycle. The proof strategy is similar to that used by Kühn and Osthus for the 3-uniform case. Though some additional difficulties arise in the k-uniform case, our argument here is considerably simplified by applying the recent hypergraph blow-up lemma of Keevash.
Recently, Mubayi and Wang showed that for $r\ge 4$ and $\ell \ge 3$, the number of $n$-vertex $r$-graphs that do not contain any loose cycle of length $\ell$ is at most $2^{O( n^{r-1} (\log n)^{(r-3)/(r-2)})}$. We improve this bound to $2^{O( n^{r-1} \log \log n) }$.
Recently, asymptotic values of 2-color Ramsey numbers for loose cycles and also loose paths were determined. Here we determine the 2-color Ramsey number of 3-uniform loose paths when one of the paths is significantly larger than the other: for every $n\geq \Big\lfloor\frac{5m}{4}\Big\rfloor$, we show that $$R(\mathcal{P}^3_n,\mathcal{P}^3_m)=2n+\Big\lfloor\frac{m+1}{2}\Big\rfloor.$$
A conjecture of Gyárfás and Sárközy says that in every $2$-coloring of the edges of the complete $k$-uniform hypergraph $K_n^k$, there are two disjoint monochromatic loose paths of distinct colors such that they cover all but at most $k-2$ vertices. A weaker form of this conjecture with $2k-5$ uncovered vertices instead of $k-2$ is proved, thus the conjecture holds for $k=3$. The main result of this paper states that the conjecture is true for all $k\ge 3$.
We show that for sufficiently large $n$, every 3-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices with minimum vertex degree at least $\binom{n-1}2 - \binom{\lfloor\frac34 n\rfloor}2 + c$, where $c=2$ if $n\in 4\mathbb{N}$ and $c=1$ if $n\in 2\mathbb{N}\setminus 4\mathbb{N}$, contains a loose Hamilton cycle. This degree condition is best possible and improves on the work of Buß, Hàn and Schacht who proved the corresponding asymptotical result.
In this paper, for sufficiently large $n$ we determine the Ramsey number $R(G,nH)$ where $G$ is a $k$-uniform hypergraph with the maximum independent set that intersects each of the edges in $k-1$ vertices and $H$ is a $k$-uniform hypergraph with a vertex so that the hypergraph induced by the edges containing this vertex is a star. There are several examples for such $G$ and $H$, among them are any disjoint union of $k$-uniform hypergraphs involving loose paths, loose cycles, tight paths, tight cycles with a multiple of $k$ edges, stars, Kneser hypergraphs and complete $k$-uniform $k$-partite …
Let $\mathcal{G}(n,r,s)$ denote a uniformly random $r$-regular $s$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices, where $s$ is a fixed constant and $r=r(n)$ may grow with $n$. An $\ell$-overlapping Hamilton cycle is a Hamilton cycle in which successive edges overlap in precisely $\ell$ vertices, and 1-overlapping Hamilton cycles are called loose Hamilton cycles. When $r,s\geq 3$ are fixed integers, we establish a threshold result for the property of containing a loose Hamilton cycle. This partially verifies a conjecture of Dudek, Frieze, Rucinski and Sileikis (2015). In this setting, we also find the asy…
We extend results of Gyárfás and Füredi on the largest monochromatic component in $r$-colored complete $k$-uniform hypergraphs to the setting of random hypergraphs. We also study long monochromatic loose cycles in $r$-colored random hypergraphs. In particular, we obtain a random analog of a result of Gyárfás, Sárközy, and Szemerédi on the longest monochromatic loose cycle in $2$-colored complete $k$-uniform hypergraphs.
A $k$-uniform loose cycle $\mathcal{C}_n^k$ is a hypergraph with vertex set $\{v_1,v_2,\ldots,v_{n(k-1)}\}$ and with the set of $n$ edges $e_i=\{v_{(i-1)(k-1)+1},v_{(i-1)(k-1)+2},\ldots,v_{(i-1)(k-1)+k}\}$, $1\leq i\leq n$, where we use mod $n(k-1)$ arithmetic. The Ramsey number $R(\mathcal{C}^k_n,\mathcal{C}^k_n)$ is asymptotically $\frac{1}{2}(2k-1)n$ as has been proved by Gyárfás, Sárközy and Szemerédi. In this paper, we investigate to determining the exact value of diagonal Ramsey number of $\mathcal{C}^k_n$ and we show that for $n\geq 2$ and $k\geq 8$ $$R(\mathcal{C}^k_n,\mathcal{C}^k_n)=…
We establish a relation between two uniform models of random $k$-graphs (for constant $k \ge 3$) on $n$ labeled vertices: $H(n,m)$, the random $k$-graph with exactly $m$ edges, and $H(n,d)$, the random $d$-regular $k$-graph. By extending to $k$-graphs the switching technique of McKay and Wormald, we show that, for some range of $d = d(n)$ and a constant $c > 0$, if $m \sim cnd$, then one can couple $H(n,m)$ and $H(n,d)$ so that the latter contains the former with probability tending to one as $n \to \infty$. In view of known results on the existence of a loose Hamilton cycle in $H(n,m)$, we co…
Haxell et. al. [%P. Haxell, T. Luczak, Y. Peng, V. Rödl, A. %Ruciński, M. Simonovits, J. Skokan, The Ramsey number for hypergraph cycles I, J. Combin. Theory, Ser. A, 113 (2006), 67-83] proved that the 2-color Ramsey number of 3-uniform loose cycles on $2n$ vertices is asymptotically $\frac{5n}{2}$. Their proof is based on the method of Regularity Lemma. Here, without using this method, we generalize their result by determining the exact values of 2-color Ramsey numbers involving loose paths and cycles in 3-uniform hypergraphs. More precisely, we prove that for every $n\geq m\geq 3$, $R(\mathc…
Let $F$ and $H$ be $k$-uniform hypergraphs. We say $H$ is $F$-saturated if $H$ does not contain a subgraph isomorphic to $F$, but $H+e$ does for any hyperedge $e\not\in E(H)$. The saturation number of $F$, denoted $\mathrm{sat}_k(n,F)$, is the minimum number of edges in a $F$-saturated $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$ on $n$ vertices. Let $C_3^{(3)}$ denote the $3$-uniform loose cycle on $3$ edges. In this work, we prove that \[ \left(\frac{4}3+o(1)\right)n\leq \mathrm{sat}_3(n,C_3^{(3)})\leq \frac{3}2n+O(1). \] This is the first non-trivial result on the saturation number for a fixed short hypergra…
The anti-Ramsey problem was introduced by Erdős, Simonovits and Sós in 1970s. The anti-Ramsey number of a hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$, $ar(n,s, \mathcal{H})$, is the smallest integer $c$ such that in any coloring of the edges of the $s$-uniform complete hypergraph on $n$ vertices with exactly $c$ colors, there is a copy of $\mathcal{H}$ whose edges have distinct colors. In this paper, we determine the anti-Ramsey numbers of linear paths and loose paths in hypergraphs for sufficiently large $n$, and give bounds for the anti-Ramsey numbers of Berge paths. Similar exact anti-Ramsey numbers are obtai…
An ordered hypergraph is a hypergraph $H$ with a specified linear ordering of the vertices, and the appearance of an ordered hypergraph $G$ in $H$ must respect the specified order on $V(G)$. In on-line Ramsey theory, Builder iteratively presents edges that Painter must immediately color. The $t$-color on-line size Ramsey number $\tilde R_t (G)$ of an ordered hypergraph $G$ is the minimum number of edges Builder needs to play (on a large ordered set of vertices) to force Painter using $t$ colors to produce a monochromatic copy of $G$. The monotone tight path $P_r^{(k)}$ is the ordered hypergrap…
The Turán number of an r-uniform hypergraph H is the maximum number of edges in any r-graph on n vertices which does not contain H as a subgraph. Let P_l^(r) denote the family of r-uniform loose paths on l edges, F(k,l) denote the family of hypergraphs consisting of k disjoint paths from P_l^(r), and P'_l^(r) denote an r-uniform linear path on l edges. We determine precisely ex_r(n;F(k,l)) and ex_r(n;k*P'_l^(r)), as well as the Turán numbers for forests of paths of differing lengths (whether these paths are loose or linear) when n is appropriately large dependent on k,l,r, for r>=3. Our result…
We consider a robust variant of Dirac-type problems in $k$-uniform hypergraphs. For instance, we prove that if $H$ is a $k$-uniform hypergraph with minimum codegree at least $(1/2 + γ)n$, $γ>0$, and $n$ is sufficiently large, then any edge coloring $ϕ$ satisfying appropriate local constraints yields a properly colored tight Hamilton cycle in $H$. Similar results for loose cycles are also shown.
We show that, for a natural notion of quasirandomness in $k$-uniform hypergraphs, any quasirandom $k$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices with constant edge density and minimum vertex degree $Ω(n^{k-1})$ contains a loose Hamilton cycle. We also give a construction to show that a $k$-uniform hypergraph satisfying these conditions need not contain a Hamilton $\ell$-cycle if $k-\ell$ divides $k$. The remaining values of $\ell$ form an interesting open question.
Here, we represent a general hypergraph by a matrix and study its spectrum. We extend the definition of equitable partition and joining operation for hypergraphs, and use those to compute eigenvalues of different hypergraphs. We derive the characteristics polynomial of a complete $m$-uniform $m$-partite hypergraph $K^m_{n_1,n_2,\dots,n_m}$. Studying edge corona of hypergraphs we find the complete spectrum of $s$-loose cycles $C^m_{L(s;n)}$ for $m \geq 2s+1$ and the characteristics polynomial of a $s$-loose paths $P^{(m)}_{L(s;n)}$. Some of the eigenvalues of $P^{(m)}_{L(s;n)}$ are also derived…
Let $H=(V,E)$ be an $r$-uniform hypergraph. For each $1 \leq s \leq r-1$, an $s$-path ${\mathcal P}^{r,s}_n$ of length $n$ in $H$ is a sequence of distinct vertices $v_1,v_2,\ldots,v_{s+n(r-s)}$ such that $\{v_{1+i(r-s)},\ldots, v_{s+(i+1)(r-s)}\}\in E(H)$ for each $0 \leq i \leq n-1$.Recently, the Ramsey number of $1$-paths in uniform hypergraphs has received a lot of attention. In this paper, we consider the Ramsey number of $r/2-$paths for even $r$. Namely, we prove the following exact result: $R({\mathcal P}^{r,r/2}_n,{\mathcal P}^{r,r/2}_3)=R({\mathcal P}^{r,r/2}_n,{\mathcal P}^{r,r/2}_4)…
We prove that every 52-connected line graph of a rank 3 hypergraph is Hamiltonian. This is the first result of this type for hypergraphs of bounded rank other than ordinary graphs.
Let $H=(V,E)$ be an $r$-uniform hypergraph with the vertex set $V$ and the edge set $E$. For $1\leq s \leq r/2$, we define a weighted graph $G^{(s)}$ on the vertex set ${V\choose s}$ as follows. Every pair of $s$-sets $I$ and $J$ is associated with a weight $w(I,J)$, which is the number of edges in $H$ passing through $I$ and $J$ if $I\cap J=\emptyset$, and 0 if $I\cap J\not=\emptyset$. The $s$-th Laplacian $Ł^{(s)}$ of $H$ is defined to be the normalized Laplacian of $G^{(s)}$. The eigenvalues of $\mathcal L^{(s)}$ are listed as $λ^{(s)}_0, λ^{(s)}_1,..., λ^{(s)}_{{n\choose s}-1}$ in non-decr…
In 2006, Kühn and Osthus showed that if a 3-graph H on n vertices has minimum co-degree at least (1/4 +o(1))n and n is even then H has a loose Hamilton cycle. In this paper, we prove that the minimum co-degree of n/4 suffices. The result is tight.
We study sufficient conditions for Hamiltonian cycles in hypergraphs, and obtain both Turán- and Dirac-type results. While the Turán-type result gives an exact threshold for the appearance of a Hamiltonian cycle in a hypergraph depending only on the extremal number of a certain path, the Dirac-type result yields a sufficient condition relying solely on the minimum vertex degree.
Let $P^k_\ell$ denote the loose $k$-path of length $\ell$ and let define $f^k_\ell(n,m)$ as the minimum value of $Δ(H)$ over all $P^k_\ell$-free $k$-graphs $H$ with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges. In the paper we study the behavior of $f^4_2(n,m)$ and $f^3_3(n,m)$ and characterize the structure of extremal hypergraphs. In particular, it is shown that when $m\sim n^2/8$ the value of each of these functions drops down from $Θ(n^2)$ to $Θ(n)$.
We present a recursive formula for the number of ways to color $j$ vertices blue in an r-uniform hyperpath of size $n$ while avoiding a blue monochromatic sub-hyperpath of length k. We use this result to solve the corresponding problem for $(r-1)$-tight r-uniform paths and loose r-uniform cycles. This generalizes some well known results from reliability engineering and analysis.
We prove for all $k\geq 4$ and $1\leq\ell<k/2$ the sharp minimum $(k-2)$-degree bound for a $k$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal H$ on $n$ vertices to contain a Hamiltonian $\ell$-cycle if $k-\ell$ divides $n$ and $n$ is sufficiently large. This extends a result of Han and Zhao for $3$-uniform hypegraphs.
In this paper we show that $e/n$ is the sharp threshold for the existence of tight Hamilton cycles in random $k$-uniform hypergraphs, for all $k\ge 4$. When $k=3$ we show that $1/n$ is an asymptotic threshold. We also determine thresholds for the existence of other types of Hamilton cycles.
We show that every $3$-uniform hypergraph $H=(V,E)$ with $|V(H)|=n$ and minimum pair degree at least $(4/5+o(1))n$ contains a squared Hamiltonian cycle. This may be regarded as a first step towards a hypergraph version of the Pósa-Seymour conjecture.
We prove that for integers $2 \leq \ell < k$ and a small constant $c$, if a $k$-uniform hypergraph with linear minimum codegree is randomly `perturbed' by changing non-edges to edges independently at random with probability $p \geq O(n^{-(k-\ell)-c})$, then with high probability the resulting $k$-uniform hypergraph contains a Hamilton $\ell$-cycle. This complements a recent analogous result for Hamilton $1$-cycles due to Krivelevich, Kwan and Sudakov, and a comparable theorem in the graph case due to Bohman, Frieze and Martin.
A subset $C$ of edges in a $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$ is a \emph{loose Hamilton cycle} if $C$ covers all the vertices of $H$ and there exists a cyclic ordering of these vertices such that the edges in $C$ are segments of that order and such that every two consecutive edges share exactly one vertex. The binomial random $k$-uniform hypergraph $H^k_{n,p}$ has vertex set $[n]$ and an edge set $E$ obtained by adding each $k$-tuple $e\in \binom{[n]}{k}$ to $E$ with probability $p$, independently at random. Here we consider the problem of finding edge-disjoint loose Hamilton cycles covering all but $…
We say that a $k$-uniform hypergraph $C$ is a Hamilton cycle of type $\ell$, for some $1\le \ell \le k$, if there exists a cyclic ordering of the vertices of $C$ such that every edge consists of $k$ consecutive vertices and for every pair of consecutive edges $E_{i-1},E_i$ in $C$ (in the natural ordering of the edges) we have $|E_{i-1}\setminus E_i|=\ell$. We define a class of $(\e,p)$-regular hypergraphs, that includes random hypergraphs, for which we can prove the existence of a decomposition of almost all edges into type $\ell$ Hamilton cycles, where $\ell<k/2$.
Given a set $R$, a hypergraph is $R$-uniform if the size of every hyperedge belongs to $R$. A hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ is called \textit{covering} if every vertex pair is contained in some hyperedge in $\mathcal{H}$. In this note, we show that every covering $[3]$-uniform hypergraph on $n\geq 6$ vertices contains a Berge cycle $C_s$ for any $3\leq s\leq n$. As an application, we determine the maximum Lagrangian of $k$-uniform Berge-$C_{t}$-free hypergraphs and Berge-$P_{t}$-free hypergraphs.
We show that every 4-uniform hypergraph with $n$ vertices and minimum pair degree at least $(5/9+o(1))n^2/2$ contains a tight Hamiltonian cycle. This degree condition is asymptotically optimal.
For $1\le d\le \ell< k$, we give a new lower bound for the minimum $d$-degree threshold that guarantees a Hamilton $\ell$-cycle in $k$-uniform hypergraphs. When $k\ge 4$ and $d< \ell=k-1$, this bound is larger than the conjectured minimum $d$-degree threshold for perfect matchings and thus disproves a well-known conjecture of Rödl and Ruciński. Our (simple) construction generalizes a construction of Katona and Kierstead and the space barrier for Hamilton cycles.
We show that every 3-uniform hypergraph with $n$ vertices and minimum vertex degree at least $(5/9+o(1))\binom{n}2$ contains a tight Hamiltonian cycle. Known lower bound constructions show that this degree condition is asymptotically optimal.
The famous Dirac's Theorem gives an exact bound on the minimum degree of an $n$-vertex graph guaranteeing the existence of a hamiltonian cycle. We prove exact bounds of similar type for hamiltonian Berge cycles in $r$-uniform, $n$-vertex hypergraphs for all $3\leq r< n$. The bounds are different for $r<n/2$ and $r\geq n/2$. We also give bounds on the minimum degree guaranteeing existence of Berge cycles of length at least $k$ in such hypergraphs; the bounds are exact for all $k\geq n/2$.
We study sufficient conditions for the existence of Hamilton cycles in uniformly dense $3$-uniform hypergraphs. Problems of this type were first considered by Lenz, Mubayi, and Mycroft for loose Hamilton cycles and Aigner-Horev and Levy considered it for tight Hamilton cycles for a fairly strong notion of uniformly dense hypergraphs. We focus on tight cycles and obtain optimal results for a weaker notion of uniformly dense hypergraphs. We show that if an $n$-vertex $3$-uniform hypergraph $H=(V,E)$ has the property that for any set of vertices $X$ and for any collection $P$ of pairs of vertices…
We establish a precise characterisation of $4$-uniform hypergraphs with minimum codegree close to $n/2$ which contain a Hamilton $2$-cycle. As an immediate corollary we identify the exact Dirac threshold for Hamilton $2$-cycles in $4$-uniform hypergraphs. Moreover, by derandomising the proof of our characterisation we provide a polynomial-time algorithm which, given a $4$-uniform hypergraph $H$ with minimum codegree close to $n/2$, either finds a Hamilton $2$-cycle in $H$ or provides a certificate that no such cycle exists. This surprising result stands in contrast to the graph setting, in whi…
We define and study a special type of hypergraph. A $σ$-hypergraph $H= H(n,r,q$ $\mid$ $σ$), where $σ$ is a partition of $r$, is an $r$-uniform hypergraph having $nq$ vertices partitioned into $ n$ classes of $q$ vertices each. If the classes are denoted by $V_1$, $V_2$,...,$V_n$, then a subset $K$ of $V(H)$ of size $r$ is an edge if the partition of $r$ formed by the non-zero cardinalities $ \mid$ $K$ $\cap$ $V_i \mid$, $ 1 \leq i \leq n$, is $σ$. The non-empty intersections $K$ $\cap$ $V_i$ are called the parts of $K$, and $s(σ)$ denotes the number of parts. We consider various types of cycl…
For an $r$-uniform hypergraph $H$ and a family of $r$-uniform hypergraphs $\mathcal{F}$, the relative Turán number $\mathrm{ex}(H,\mathcal{F})$ is the maximum number of edges in an $\mathcal{F}$-free subgraph of $H$. In this paper we give lower bounds on $\mathrm{ex}(H,\mathcal{F})$ for certain families of hypergraph cycles $\mathcal{F}$ such as Berge cycles and loose cycles. In particular, if $\mathcal{C}_\ell^3$ denotes the set of all $3$-uniform Berge $\ell$-cycles and $H$ is a 3-uniform hypergraph with maximum degree $Δ$, we prove \[\mathrm{ex}(H,\mathcal{C}_4^{3})\ge Δ^{-3/4-o(1)}e(H),\] …
We prove that for all $k\geq 4$ and $1\leq\ell<k/2$, every $k$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ on $n$ vertices with $δ_{k-2}(\mathcal{H})\geq\left(\frac{4(k-\ell)-1}{4(k-\ell)^2}+o(1)\right)\binom{n}{2}$ contains a Hamiltonian $\ell$-cycle if $k-\ell$ divides $n$. This degree condition is asymptotically best possible. The case $k=3$ was addressed earlier by Buß et al.
