The minimum vertex degree for an almost-spanning tight cycle in a $3$-uniform hypergraph

We prove that any $3$-uniform hypergraph whose minimum vertex degree is at least $\left(\frac{5}{9} + o(1) \right)\binom{n}{2}$ admits an almost-spanning tight cycle, that is, a tight cycle leaving $o(n)$ vertices uncovered. The bound on the vertex degree is asymptotically best possible. Our proof uses the hypergraph regularity method, and in particular a recent version of the hypergraph regularity lemma proved by Allen, Böttcher, Cooley and Mycroft.

Berge cycles in non-uniform hypergraphs

We consider two extremal problems for set systems without long Berge cycles. First we give Dirac-type minimum degree conditions that force long Berge cycles. Next we give an upper bound for the number of hyperedges in a hypergraph with bounded circumference. Both results are best possible in infinitely many cases.

Hamilton cycles in quasirandom hypergraphs

We show that, for a natural notion of quasirandomness in $k$-uniform hypergraphs, any quasirandom $k$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices with constant edge density and minimum vertex degree $Ω(n^{k-1})$ contains a loose Hamilton cycle. We also give a construction to show that a $k$-uniform hypergraph satisfying these conditions need not contain a Hamilton $\ell$-cycle if $k-\ell$ divides $k$. The remaining values of $\ell$ form an interesting open question.

Properly colored Hamilton cycles in Dirac-type hypergraphs

We consider a robust variant of Dirac-type problems in $k$-uniform hypergraphs. For instance, we prove that if $H$ is a $k$-uniform hypergraph with minimum codegree at least $(1/2 + γ)n$, $γ>0$, and $n$ is sufficiently large, then any edge coloring $ϕ$ satisfying appropriate local constraints yields a properly colored tight Hamilton cycle in $H$. Similar results for loose cycles are also shown.

Tight paths in convex geometric hypergraphs

In this paper, we prove a theorem on tight paths in convex geometric hypergraphs, which is asymptotically sharp in infinitely many cases. Our geometric theorem is a common generalization of early results of Hopf and Pannwitz [12], Sutherland [19], Kupitz and Perles [16] for convex geometric graphs, as well as the classical Erdős-Gallai Theorem [6] for graphs. As a consequence, we obtain the first substantial improvement on the Turán problem for tight paths in uniform hypergraphs.

Almost partitioning 2-coloured complete 3-uniform hypergraphs into two monochromatic tight or loose cycles

We show that for every η > 0 there exists an integer n_0 such that every 2-colouring of the 3-uniform complete hypergraph on n \geq n_0 vertices contains two disjoint monochromatic tight cycles of distinct colours that together cover all but at most ηn vertices. The same result holds if we replace tight cycles with loose cycles.

Tight Hamilton Cycles in Random Uniform Hypergraphs

In this paper we show that $e/n$ is the sharp threshold for the existence of tight Hamilton cycles in random $k$-uniform hypergraphs, for all $k\ge 4$. When $k=3$ we show that $1/n$ is an asymptotic threshold. We also determine thresholds for the existence of other types of Hamilton cycles.

The Structure of Hypergraphs without long Berge cycles

We study the structure of $r$-uniform hypergraphs containing no Berge cycles of length at least $k$ for $k \leq r$, and determine that such hypergraphs have some special substructure. In particular we determine the extremal number of such hypergraphs, giving an affirmative answer to the conjectured value when $k=r$ and giving a a simple solution to a recent result of Kostochka-Luo when $k < r$.

Longest cycles in 3-connected hypergraphs and bipartite graphs

In the language of hypergraphs, our main result is a Dirac-type bound: we prove that every $3$-connected hypergraph $H$ with $ δ(H)\geq \max\{|V(H)|, \frac{|E(H)|+10}{4}\}$ has a hamiltonian Berge cycle. This is sharp and refines a conjecture by Jackson from 1981 (in the language of bipartite graphs). Our proofs are in the language of bipartite graphs, since the incidence graph of each hypergraph is bipartite.

Given a set $R$, a hypergraph is $R$-uniform if the size of every hyperedge belongs to $R$. A hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ is called \textit{covering} if every vertex pair is contained in some hyperedge in $\mathcal{H}$. In this note, we show that every covering $[3]$-uniform hypergraph on $n\geq 6$ vertices contains a Berge cycle $C_s$ for any $3\leq s\leq n$. As an application, we determine the maximum Lagrangian of $k$-uniform Berge-$C_{t}$-free hypergraphs and Berge-$P_{t}$-free hypergraphs.

If ${\cal H}=(V,{\cal E})$ is a hypergraph, its edge intersection hypergraph $EI({\cal H})=(V,{\cal E}^{EI})$ has the edge set ${\cal E}^{EI}=\{e_1 \cap e_2 \ |\ e_1, e_2 \in {\cal E} \ \wedge \ e_1 \neq e_2 \ \wedge \ |e_1 \cap e_2 |\geq 2\}$. In the present paper, we consider 4- and 5-uniform hypergraphs ${\cal H}$, respectively, with $EI({\cal H}) = C_n$. Our results fill the gap between the 3- and the 6-uniform case considered in arXiv:1902.00396.

Hamilton $\ell$-cycles in randomly-perturbed hypergraphs

We prove that for integers $2 \leq \ell < k$ and a small constant $c$, if a $k$-uniform hypergraph with linear minimum codegree is randomly `perturbed' by changing non-edges to edges independently at random with probability $p \geq O(n^{-(k-\ell)-c})$, then with high probability the resulting $k$-uniform hypergraph contains a Hamilton $\ell$-cycle. This complements a recent analogous result for Hamilton $1$-cycles due to Krivelevich, Kwan and Sudakov, and a comparable theorem in the graph case due to Bohman, Frieze and Martin.

Hypergraphs with no tight cycles

We show that every $r$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices which does not contain a tight cycle has at most $O(n^{r-1} (\log n)^5)$ edges. This is an improvement on the previously best-known bound, of $n^{r-1} e^{O(\sqrt{\log n})}$, due to Sudakov and Tomon, and our proof builds up on their work. A recent construction of B. Janzer implies that our bound is tight up to an $O((\log n)^4 \log \log n)$ factor.

Loose Hamilton Cycles in Random Uniform Hypergraphs

In the random hypergraph $H_{n,p;k}$ each possible $k$-tuple appears independently with probability $p$. A loose Hamilton cycle is a cycle in which every pair of adjacent edges intersects in a single vertex. We prove that if $p n^{k-1}/\log n$ tends to infinity with $n$ then $$\lim_{\substack{n\to \infty 2(k-1) |n}}\Pr(H_{n,p;k}\ contains\ a\ loose\ Hamilton\ cycle)=1.$$ This is asymptotically best possible.

On 3-uniform hypergraphs without a cycle of a given length

We study the maximum number of hyperedges in a 3-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices that does not contain a Berge cycle of a given length $\ell$. In particular we prove that the upper bound for $C_{2k+1}$-free hypergraphs is of the order $O(k^2n^{1+1/k})$, improving the upper bound of Györi and Lemons by a factor of $Θ(k^2)$. Similar bounds are shown for linear hypergraphs.

$3$-uniform hypergraphs and linear cycles

Paths, cycles and sprinkling in random hypergraphs

We prove a lower bound on the length of the longest $j$-tight cycle in a $k$-uniform binomial random hypergraph for any $2 \le j \le k-1$. We first prove the existence of a $j$-tight path of the required length. The standard "sprinkling" argument is not enough to show that this path can be closed to a $j$-tight cycle -- we therefore show that the path has many extensions, which is sufficient to allow the sprinkling to close the cycle.

A tight $k$-uniform $\ell$-cycle, denoted by $TC_\ell^k$, is a $k$-uniform hypergraph whose vertex set is $v_0, \cdots, v_{\ell-1}$, and the edges are all the $k$-tuples $\{v_i, v_{i+1}, \cdots, v_{i+k-1}\}$, with subscripts modulo $\ell$. Motivated by a classic result in graph theory that every $n$-vertex cycle-free graph has at most $n-1$ edges, Sós and, independently, Verstraëte asked whether for every integer $k$, a $k$-uniform $n$-vertex hypergraph without any tight $k$-uniform cycles has at most $\binom{n-1}{k-1}$ edges. In this paper, we answer this question in negative.

Packing tight Hamilton cycles in uniform hypergraphs

Dirac's Theorem for hamiltonian Berge cycles in uniform hypergraphs

The famous Dirac's Theorem gives an exact bound on the minimum degree of an $n$-vertex graph guaranteeing the existence of a hamiltonian cycle. We prove exact bounds of similar type for hamiltonian Berge cycles in $r$-uniform, $n$-vertex hypergraphs for all $3\leq r< n$. The bounds are different for $r<n/2$ and $r\geq n/2$. $3$-uniform hypergraphs without a cycle of length five

In this paper we show that the maximum number of hyperedges in a $3$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices without a (Berge) cycle of length five is less than $(0.254 + o(1))n^{3/2}$, improving an estimate of Bollobás and Győri. We obtain this result by showing that not many $3$-paths can start from certain subgraphs of the shadow.

Localised codegree conditions for tight Hamilton cycles in 3-uniform hypergraphs

We prove that any k-uniform hypergraph on n vertices with minimum degree at least n/(2(k-1))+o(n) contains a loose Hamilton cycle. The proof strategy is similar to that used by Kühn and Osthus for the 3-uniform case. Forbidding Hamilton cycles in uniform hypergraphs

For $1\le d\le \ell< k$, we give a new lower bound for the minimum $d$-degree threshold that guarantees a Hamilton $\ell$-cycle in $k$-uniform hypergraphs. When $k\ge 4$ and $d< \ell=k-1$, this bound is larger than the conjectured minimum $d$-degree threshold for perfect matchings and thus disproves a well-known conjecture of Rödl and Ruciński. Partitioning $2$-coloured complete $k$-uniform hypergraphs into monochromatic $\ell$-cycles

We show that for all $\ell, k, n$ with $\ell \leq k/2$ and $(k-\ell)$ dividing $n$ the following hypergraph-variant of Lehel's conjecture is true. In this paper, we develop a method for studying cycle lengths in hypergraphs. Our method is built on earlier ones used in [21,22,18]. On Hamiltonian cycles in hypergraphs with dense link graphs

We show that every $k$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices whose minimum $(k-2)$-degree is at least $(5/9+o(1))n^2/2$ contains a Hamiltonian cycle. A construction due to Han and Zhao shows that this minimum degree condition is optimal. The same result was proved independently by Lang and Sahueza-Matamala.

Decomposing hypergraphs into cycle factors

A famous result by Rödl, Ruciński, and Szemerédi guarantees a (tight) Hamilton cycle in $k$-uniform hypergraphs $H$ on $n$ vertices with minimum $(k-1)$-degree $δ_{k-1}(H)\geq (1/2+o(1))n$, thereby extending Dirac's result from graphs to hypergraphs. For graphs, much more is known; each graph on $n$ vertices with $δ(G)\geq (1/2+o(1))n$ contains $(1-o(1))r$ edge-disjoint Hamilton cycles where $r$ is the largest integer such that $G$ contains a spanning $2r$-regular subgraph, which is clearly asymptotically optimal. Cycles as edge intersection hypergraphs

If ${\cal H}=(V,{\cal E})$ is a hypergraph, its edge intersection hypergraph $EI({\cal H})=(V,{\cal E}^{EI})$ has the edge set ${\cal E}^{EI}=\{e_1 \cap e_2 \ |\ e_1, e_2 \in {\cal E} \ \wedge \ e_1 \neq e_2 \ \wedge \ |e_1 \cap e_2 |\geq2\}$. Picking up a problem from arXiv:1901.06292, for $n \ge 24$ we prove that there is a 3-regular (and - if $n$ is even - 6-uniform) hypergraph ${\cal H}=(V,{\cal E})$ with $\lceil \frac{n}{2} \rceil$ hyperedges and $EI({\cal H}) = C_n$.

Loose cores and cycles in random hypergraphs

Inspired by the study of loose cycles in hypergraphs, we define the \emph{loose core} in hypergraphs as a structure which mirrors the close relationship between cycles and $2$-cores in graphs. We prove that in the $r$-uniform binomial random hypergraph $H^r(n,p)$, the order of the loose core undergoes a phase transition at a certain critical threshold and determine this order, as well as the number of edges, asymptotically in the subcritical and supercritical regimes. Minimum codegree threshold for Hamilton l-cycles in k-uniform hypergraphs

For $1\le \ell<k/2$, we show that for sufficiently large $n$, every $k$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices with minimum codegree at least $\frac n{2 (k-\ell)} $ contains a Hamilton $\ell$-cycle. This codegree condition is best possible and improves on work of Hàn and Schacht who proved an asymptotic result.
