Let $G$ be a connected hypergraph with even uniformity, which contains cut vertices. Then $G$ is the coalescence of two nontrivial connected sub-hypergraphs (called branches) at a cut vertex. Let $\mathcal{A}(G)$ be the adjacency tensor of $G$. The least H-eigenvalue of $\mathcal{A}(G)$ refers to the least real eigenvalue of $\mathcal{A}(G)$ associated with a real eigenvector. In this paper we obtain a perturbation result on the least H-eigenvalue of $\mathcal{A}(G)$ when a branch of $G$ attached at one vertex is relocated to another vertex, and characterize the unique hypergraph whose least H-eigenvalue attains the minimum among all hypergraphs in a certain class of hypergraphs which contain a fixed connected hypergraph.
An oriented hypergraph is an oriented incidence structure that generalizes and unifies graph and hypergraph theoretic results by examining its locally signed graphic substructure. In this paper we obtain a combinatorial characterization of the coefficients of the characteristic polynomials of oriented hypergraphic Laplacian and adjacency matrices via a signed hypergraphic generalization of basic figures of graphs. Additionally, we provide bounds on the determinant and permanent of the Laplacian matrix, characterize the oriented hypergraphs in which the upper bound is sharp, and demonstrate tha…
In this paper, we define and obtain several properties of the (adjacency) energy of a hypergraph. In particular, bounds for this energy are obtained as functions of structural and spectral parameters, such as Zagreb index and spectral radius. We also study how the energy of a hypergraph varies when a vertex/edge is removed or when an edge is divied. In addition, we solved the extremal problem energy for the class of hyperstars, and show that the energy of a hypergraph is never an odd number.
We present progress on the problem of asymptotically describing the adjacency eigenvalues of random and complete uniform hypergraphs. There is a natural conjecture arising from analogy with random matrix theory that connects these spectra to that of the all-ones hypermatrix. Several of the ingredients along a possible path to this conjecture are established, and may be of independent interest in spectral hypergraph/hypermatrix theory. In particular, we provide a bound on the spectral radius of the symmetric Bernoulli hyperensemble, and show that the spectrum of the complete \(k\)-uniform hyper…
Adjacency between two vertices in graphs or hypergraphs is a pairwise relationship. It is redefined in this article as 2-adjacency. In general hypergraphs, hyperedges hold for $n$-adic relationship. To keep the $n$-adic relationship the concepts of $k$-adjacency and e-adjacency are defined. In graphs 2-adjacency and e-adjacency concepts match, just as $k$-adjacency and e-adjacency do for $k$-uniform hypergraphs. For general hypergraphs these concepts are different. This paper also contributes in a uniformization process of a general hypergraph to allow the definition of an e-adjacency tensor, …
Let $G$ be a $t$-uniform hypergraph, and let $c(G)$ denote the cyclic index of the adjacency tensor of $G$. Let $m,s,t$ be positive integers such that $t \ge 2$, $s \ge 2$ and $m=st$. The generalized power $G^{m,s}$ of $G$ is obtained from $G$ by blowing up each vertex into an $s$-set and preserving the adjacency relation. It was conjectured that $c(G^{m,s})=s \cdot c(G)$. In this paper we show that the conjecture is false by giving a counterexample, and give some sufficient conditions for the conjecture holding. Finally we give an equivalent characterization of the equality in the conjecture …
In graphs, the concept of adjacency is clearly defined: it is a pairwise relationship between vertices. Adjacency in hypergraphs has to integrate hyperedge multi-adicity: the concept of adjacency needs to be defined properly by introducing two new concepts: $k$-adjacency - $k$ vertices are in the same hyperedge - and e-adjacency - vertices of a given hyperedge are e-adjacent. In order to build a new e-adjacency tensor that is interpretable in terms of hypergraph uniformisation, we designed two processes: the first is a hypergraph uniformisation process (HUP) and the second is a polynomial homo…
An oriented hypergraph is a hypergraph where each vertex-edge incidence is given a label of $+1$ or $-1$. The adjacency and Laplacian eigenvalues of an oriented hypergraph are studied. Eigenvalue bounds for both the adjacency and Laplacian matrices of an oriented hypergraph which depend on structural parameters of the oriented hypergraph are found. An oriented hypergraph and its incidence dual are shown to have the same nonzero Laplacian eigenvalues. A family of oriented hypergraphs with uniformally labeled incidences is also studied. This family provides a hypergraphic generalization of the s…
HyperBagGraphs (hb-graphs as short) extend hypergraphs by allowing the hyperedges to be multisets. Multisets are composed of elements that have a multiplicity. When this multiplicity has positive integer values, it corresponds to non ordered lists of potentially duplicated elements. We define hb-graphs as family of multisets over a vertex set; natural hb-graphs correspond to hb-graphs that have multiplicity function with positive integer values. Extending the definition of e-adjacency to natural hb-graphs, we define different way of building an e-adjacency tensor, that we compare before having…
The generalized power of a simple graph $G$, denoted by $G^{k,s}$, is obtained from $G$ by blowing up each vertex into an $s$-set and each edge into a $k$-set, where $1 \le s \le \frac{k}{2}$. When $s < \frac{k}{2}$, $G^{k,s}$ is always odd-bipartite. It is known that $G^{k,{k \over 2}}$ is non-odd-bipartite if and only if $G$ is non-bipartite, and $G^{k,{k \over 2}}$ has the same adjacency (respectively, signless Laplacian) spectral radius as $G$. In this paper, we prove that, regardless of multiplicities, the $H$-spectrum of $\A(G^{k,\frac{k}{2}})$ (respectively, $\Q(G^{k,\frac{k}{2}})$) con…
A 1-factor of a hypergraph $G=(X,W)$ is a set of hyperedges such that every vertex of $G$ is incident to exactly one hyperedge from the set. A 1-factorization is a partition of all hyperedges of $G$ into disjoint 1-factors. The adjacency matrix of a $d$-uniform hypergraph $G$ is the $d$-dimensional (0,1)-matrix of order $|X|$ such that an element $a_{α_1, \ldots, α_d}$ of $A$ equals 1 if and only if $\left\{α_1, \ldots, α_d\right\}$ is a hyperedge of $G$. Here we estimate the number of 1-factors of uniform hypergraphs and the number of 1-factorizations of complete uniform hypergraphs by means …
In this paper, we present several upper bounds for the adjacency and signless Laplacian spectral radii of uniform hypergraphs in terms of degree sequences.
The $p$-spectral radius of a uniform hypergraph covers many important concepts, such as Lagrangian and spectral radius of the hypergraph, and is crucial for solving spectral extremal problems of hypergraphs. In this paper, we establish a spherically constrained maximization model and propose a first-order conjugate gradient algorithm to compute the $p$-spectral radius of a uniform hypergraph (CSRH). By the semialgebraic nature of the adjacency tensor of a uniform hypergraph, CSRH is globally convergent and obtains the global maximizer with a high probability. When computing the spectral radius…
In this paper, we investigate spectral properties of the adjacency tensor, Laplacian tensor and signless Laplacian tensor of general hypergraphs (including uniform and non-uniform hypergraphs). We obtain some bounds for the spectral radius of general hypergraphs in terms of vertex degrees, and give spectral characterizations of odd-bipartite hypergraphs.
In order to investigate the non-odd-bipartiteness of even uniform hypergraphs, starting from a simple graph $G$, we construct a generalized power of $G$, denoted by $G^{k,s}$, which is obtained from $G$ by blowing up each vertex into a $k$-set and each edge into a $(k-2s)$-set, where $s \le k/2$. When $s < k/2$, $G^{k,s}$ is always odd-bipartite. We show that $G^{k,{k \over 2}}$ is non-odd-bipartite if and only if $G$ is non-bipartite, and find that $G^{k,{k \over 2}}$ has the same adjacency (respectively, signless Laplacian) spectral radius as $G$. So the results involving the adjacency or si…
The cut method has been proved to be extremely useful in chemical graph theory. In this paper the cut method is extended to hypergraphs. More precisely, the method is developed for the Wiener index of $k$-uniform partial cube-hypergraphs. The method is applied to cube-hypergraphs and hypertrees. Extensions of the method to hypergraphs arising in chemistry which are not necessary $k$-uniform and/or not necessary linear are also developed.
Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a connected $k$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices and $m$ hyperedges. In [A.~Banerjee, On the spectrum of hypergraph, Linear Algebra and its Application, 614(2021), 82--110], Anirban Banerjee introduced a new adjacency matrix for hypergraphs. In this article we consider the corresponding signless Laplacian matrix $Q(\mathcal{H})$ and discuss about its spectrum.
For a given hypergraph, an orientation can be assigned to the vertex-edge incidences. This orientation is used to define the adjacency and Laplacian matrices. In addition to studying these matrices, several related structures are investigated including the incidence dual, the intersection graph (line graph), and the 2-section. A connection is then made between oriented hypergraphs and balanced incomplete block designs.
Let A(G) be the adjacency tensor (hypermatrix) of uniform hypergraph G. The maximum modulus of the eigenvalues of A(G) is called the spectral radius of G. In this paper, the conjecture of Fan et al. in [5] related to compare the spectral radii of some three uniform hypergraphs is solved. Moreover, some eigenvalues properties of a kind of uniform hypergraphs are obtained.
Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a uniform hypergraph. Let $\mathcal{A(H)}$ and $\mathcal{Q(H)}$ be the adjacency tensor and the signless Laplacian tensor of $\mathcal{H}$, respectively. In this note we prove several bounds for the spectral radius of $\mathcal{A(H)}$ and $\mathcal{Q(H)}$ in terms of the degrees of vertices of $\mathcal{H}.$
An oriented hypergraph is a hypergraph where each vertex-edge incidence is given a label of $+1$ or $-1$. We define the adjacency, incidence and Laplacian matrices of an oriented hypergraph and study each of them. We extend several matrix results known for graphs and signed graphs to oriented hypergraphs. New matrix results that are not direct generalizations are also presented. Finally, we study a new family of matrices that contains walk information.
The perfect matching polytope, i.e. the convex hull of (incidence vectors of) perfect matchings of a graph is used in many combinatorial algorithms. Kotzig, Lovász and Plummer developed a decomposition theory for graphs with perfect matchings and their corresponding polytopes known as the tight cut decomposition which breaks down every graph into a number of indecomposable graphs, so called bricks. For many properties that are of interest on graphs with perfect matchings, including the description of the perfect matching polytope, it suffices to consider these bricks. A key result by Lovász on…
For $0\leα<1$ and a uniform hypergraph $G$, the $α$-spectral radius of $G$ is the largest $H$-eigenvalue of $α\mathcal{D}(G) +(1-α)\mathcal{A}(G)$, where $\mathcal{D}(G)$ and $\mathcal{A}(G)$ are the diagonal tensor of degrees and the adjacency tensor of $G$, respectively. We give upper bounds for the $α$-spectral radius of a uniform hypergraph, propose some transformations that increase the $α$-spectral radius, and determine the unique hypergraphs with maximum $α$-spectral radius in some classes of uniform hypergraphs.
In this paper we study fundamental connectivity properties of hypergraphs from a graph-theoretic perspective, with the emphasis on cut edges, cut vertices, and blocks. To prepare the ground, we define various types of subhypergraphs, as well as various types of walks in a hypergraph. We then prove a number of new results involving cut edges, cut vertices, and blocks. In particular, we describe the exact relationship between the block decomposition of a hypergraph and the block decomposition of its incidence graph.
An r-cut of a k-uniform hypergraph H is a partition of the vertex set of H into r parts and the size of the cut is the number of edges which have a vertex in each part. A classical result of Edwards says that every m-edge graph has a 2-cut of size $m/2 + Ω(\sqrt{m})$, and this is best possible. That is, there exist cuts which exceed the expected size of a random cut by some multiple of the standard deviation. We study analogues of this and related results in hypergraphs. First, we observe that similarly to graphs, every m-edge k-uniform hypergraph has an r-cut whose size is $Ω(\sqrt m)$ larger…
An Euler tour in a hypergraph is a closed walk that traverses each edge of the hypergraph exactly once, while an Euler family, first defined by Bahmanian and Sajna, is a family of closed walks that jointly traverse each edge exactly once and cannot be concatenated. In this paper, we study the notions of a spanning Euler tour and a spanning Euler family, that is, an Euler tour (family) that also traverses each vertex of the hypergraph at least once. We examine necessary and sufficient conditions for a hypergraph to admit a spanning Euler family, most notably, when the hypergraph possesses a ver…
In this paper we consider two natural notions of connectivity for hypergraphs: weak and strong. We prove that the strong vertex connectivity of a connected hypergraph is bounded by its weak edge connectivity, thereby extending a theorem of Whitney from graphs to hypergraphs. We find that while determining a minimum weak vertex cut can be done in polynomial time and is equivalent to finding a minimum vertex cut in the 2-section of the hypergraph in question, determining a minimum strong vertex cut is NP-hard for general hypergraphs. Moreover, the problem of finding minimum strong vertex cuts re…
In 1970 Smith classified all connected graphs with the spectral radius at most $2$. Here the spectral radius of a graph is the largest eigenvalue of its adjacency matrix. Recently, the definition of spectral radius has been extended to $r$-uniform hypergraphs. In this paper, we generalize the Smith's theorem to $r$-uniform hypergraphs. We show that the smallest limit point of the spectral radii of connected $r$-uniform hypergraphs is $ρ_r=(r-1)!\sqrt[r]{4}$. We discovered a novel method for computing the spectral radius of hypergraphs, and classified all connected $r$-uniform hypergraphs with …
Let $F$ be a graph. A hypergraph is called Berge $F$ if it can be obtained by replacing each edge in $F$ by a hyperedge containing it. Given a family of graphs $\mathcal{F}$, we say that a hypergraph $H$ is Berge $\mathcal{F}$-free if for every $F \in \mathcal{F}$, the hypergraph $H$ does not contain a Berge $F$ as a subhypergraph. In this paper we investigate the connections between spectral radius of the adjacency tensor and structural properties of a linear hypergraph. In particular, we obtain a spectral version of Turán-type problems over linear $k$-uniform hypergraphs by using spectral me…
An Euler tour of a hypergraph is a closed walk that traverses every edge exactly once; if a hypergraph admits such a walk, then it is called eulerian. Although this notion is one of the progenitors of graph theory --- dating back to the eighteenth century --- treatment of this subject has only begun on hypergraphs in the last decade. Other authors have produced results about rank-2 universal cycles and 1-overlap cycles, which are equivalent to our definition of Euler tours. In contrast, an Euler family is a collection of nontrivial closed walks that jointly traverse every edge of the hypergrap…
We define cut-and-paste, a construction which, given a quadriculated disk obtains a disjoint union of quadriculated disks of smaller total area. We provide two examples of the use of this procedure as a recursive step. Tilings of a disk $Δ$ receive a parity: we construct a perfect or near-perfect matching of tilings of opposite parities. Let $B_Δ$ be the black-to-white adjacency matrix: we factor $B_Δ= L\tilde DU$, where $L$ and $U$ are lower and upper triangular matrices, $\tilde D$ is obtained from a larger identity matrix by removing rows and columns and all entries of $L$, $\tilde D$ and $…
Let a_1,...,a_k satisfy a_1+...+a_k=1 and suppose a k-uniform hypergraph on n vertices satisfies the following property; in any partition of its vertices into k sets A_1,...,A_k of sizes a_1*n,...,a_k*n, the number of edges intersecting A_1,...,A_k is the number one would expect to find in a random k-uniform hypergraph. Can we then infer that H is quasi-random? We show that the answer is negative if and only if a_1=...=a_k=1/k. This resolves an open problem raised in 1991 by Chung and Graham [J. AMS '91]. While hypergraphs satisfying the property corresponding to a_1=...=a_k=1/k are not necess…
Hypergraphs are a generalization of graphs in which edges can connect any number of vertices. They allow the modeling of complex networks with higher-order interactions, and their spectral theory studies the qualitative properties that can be inferred from the spectrum, i.e. the multiset of the eigenvalues, of an operator associated to a hypergraph. It is expected that a small perturbation of a hypergraph, such as the removal of a few vertices or edges, does not lead to a major change of the eigenvalues. In particular, it is expected that the eigenvalues of the original hypergraph interlace th…
For $0\leq α< 1$, the $\mathcal{A}_α$-spectral radius of a $k$-uniform hypergraph $G$ is defined to be the spectral radius of the tensor $\mathcal{A}_α(G):=α\mathcal{D}(G)+(1-α) \mathcal{A}(G)$, where $\mathcal{D}(G)$ and $A(G)$ are diagonal and the adjacency tensors of $G$ respectively. This paper presents several lower bounds for the difference between the $\mathcal{A}_α$-spectral radius and an average degree $\frac{km}{n}$ for a connected $k$-uniform hypergraph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges, which may be considered as the measures of irregularity of $G$. Moreover, two lower bounds on the …
The purpose of this paper is to introduce a model to study structures which are widely present in public transportation networks. We show that, through hypergraphs, one can describe these structures and investigate the relation between their spectra. To this aim, we extend the structure of $(m,k)$-stars on graphs to hypergraphs: the $(m,k)$-hyperstars on hypergraphs. Also, by giving suitable conditions on the hyperedge weights we prove the existence of matrix eigenvalues of computable values and multiplicities, where the matrices considered are Laplacian, adjacency and transition matrices. By …
The graph Cheeger constant and Cheeger inequalities are generalized to the case of hypergraphs whose edges have the same cardinality. In particular, it is shown that the second largest eigenvalue of the generalized normalized Laplacian is bounded both above and below by the generalized Cheeger constant, and the corresponding eigenfunctions can be used to approximate the Cheeger cut.
Hoffman proved that for a simple graph $G$, the chromatic number $χ(G)$ obeys $χ(G) \le 1 - \frac{λ_1}{λ_{n}}$ where $λ_1$ and $λ_n$ are the maximal and minimal eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix of $G$ respectively. Lovász later showed that $χ(G) \le 1 - \frac{λ_1}{λ_{n}}$ for any (perhaps negatively) weighted adjacency matrix. In this paper, we give a probabilistic proof of Lovász's theorem, then extend the technique to derive generalizations of Hoffman's theorem when allowed a certain proportion of edge-conflicts. Using this result, we show that if a 3-uniform hypergraph is 2-colorable, th…
We define an algebraic setup of homology for hypergraphs, which defaults to simplicial homology in the case of graphs, and study its basic properties. As part of our study we define algebraic spanning trees of hypergraphs, along with fundamental cuts and cycles playing their usual roles.
Let $G$ be connected uniform hypergraph and let $\mathcal{A}(G)$ be the adjacency tensor of $G$. The stabilizing index of $G$ is the number of eigenvectors of $\mathcal{A}(G)$ associated with the spectral radius, and the cyclic index of $G$ is the number of eigenvalues of $\mathcal{A}(G)$ with modulus equal to the spectral radius. Let $G_1 \odot G_2$ and $G_1 \Box G_2$ be the coalescence and Cartesian product of connected $m$-uniform hypergraphs $G_1$ and $G_2$ respectively. In this paper, we give explicit formulas for the the stabilizing indices and cyclic indices of $G_1 \odot G_2$ and $G_1 …
The spectral theory of higher-order symmetric tensors is an important tool to reveal some important properties of a hypergraph via its adjacency tensor, Laplacian tensor, and signless Laplacian tensor. Owing to the sparsity of these tensors, we propose an efficient approach to calculate products of these tensors and any vectors. Using the state-of-the-art L-BFGS approach, we develop a first-order optimization algorithm for computing H- and Z-eigenvalues of these large scale sparse tensors (CEST). With the aid of the Kurdyka-Łojasiewicz property, we prove that the sequence of iterates generated…
Unlike an irreducible $Z$-matrices, a weakly irreducible $Z$-tensor $\mathcal{A}$ can have more than one eigenvector associated with the least H-eigenvalue. We show that there are finitely many eigenvectors of $\mathcal{A}$ associated with the least H-eigenvalue. If $\mathcal{A}$ is further combinatorial symmetric, the number of such eigenvectors can be obtained explicitly by the Smith normal form of the incidence matrix of $\mathcal{A}$. When applying to a connected uniform hypergraph $G$, we prove that the number of Laplacian eigenvectors of $G$ associated with the zero eigenvalue is equal t…
Let $G$ be a simple graph or hypergraph, and let $A(G),L(G),Q(G)$ be the adjacency, Laplacian and signless Laplacian tensors of $G$ respectively. The largest $H$-eigenvalues (resp., the spectral radii) of $L(G),Q(G)$ are denoted respectively by $λ_{\max}^L(G), λ_{\max}^Q(G)$ (resp., $ρ^L(G), ρ^Q(G)$). For a connected non-bipartite simple graph $G$, $λ_{\max}^L(G)=ρ^L(G) < ρ^Q(G)$. But this does not hold for non-odd-bipartite hypergraphs. We will investigate this problem by considering a class of generalized power hypergraphs $G^{k,\frac{k}{2}}$, which are constructed from simple connected grap…
Let $\mathbb{Q}_{k,n}$ be the set of the connected $k$-uniform weighted hypergraphs with $n$ vertices, where $k,n\geq 3$. For a hypergraph $G\in \mathbb{Q}_{k,n}$, let $\mathcal{A}(G)$, $\mathcal{L} (G)$ and $\mathcal{Q} (G)$ be its adjacency tensor, Laplacian tensor and signless Laplacian tensor, respectively. The spectral radii of $\mathcal{A}(G)$ and $\mathcal{Q} (G)$ are investigated. Some basic properties of the $H$-eigenvalue, the $H^{+}$-eigenvalue and the $H^{++}$-eigenvalue of $\mathcal{A}(G)$, $\mathcal{L} (G)$ and $\mathcal{Q} (G)$ are presented. Several lower and upper bounds of th…
We consider the Hypergraph-$k$-cut problem. The input consists of a hypergraph $G=(V,E)$ with non-negative hyperedge-costs $c: E\rightarrow R_+$ and a positive integer $k$. The objective is to find a least-cost subset $F\subseteq E$ such that the number of connected components in $G-F$ is at least $k$. An alternative formulation of the objective is to find a partition of $V$ into $k$ non-empty sets $V_1,V_2,\ldots,V_k$ so as to minimize the cost of the hyperedges that cross the partition. Graph-$k$-cut, the special case of Hypergraph-$k$-cut obtained by restricting to graph inputs, has receive…
Let $\mathcal{A(}G\mathcal{)},\mathcal{L(}G\mathcal{)}$ and $\mathcal{Q(}% G\mathcal{)}$ be the adjacency tensor, Laplacian tensor and signless Laplacian tensor of uniform hypergraph $G$, respectively. Denote by $λ(\mathcal{T})$ the largest H-eigenvalue of tensor $\mathcal{T}$. Let $H$ be a uniform hypergraph, and $H^{\prime}$ be obtained from $H$ by inserting a new vertex with degree one in each edge. We prove that $λ(\mathcal{Q(}% H^{\prime}\mathcal{)})\leqλ(\mathcal{Q(}H\mathcal{)}).$ Denote by $G^{k}$ the $k$th power hypergraph of an ordinary graph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ\geq2$. We will…
