Let $κ'(G)$, $κ(G)$, $μ_{n-1}(G)$ and $μ_1(G)$ denote the edge-connectivity, vertex-connectivity, the algebraic connectivity and the Laplacian spectral radius of $G$, respectively. In this paper, we prove that for integers $k\geq 2$ and $r\geq 2$, and any simple graph $G$ of order $n$ with minimum degree $δ\geq k$, girth $g\geq 3$ and clique number $ω(G)\leq r$, the edge-connectivity $κ'(G)\geq k$ if $μ_{n-1}(G) \geq \frac{(k-1)n}{N(δ,g)(n-N(δ,g))}$ or if $μ_{n-1}(G) \geq \frac{(k-1)n}{φ(δ,r)(n-φ(δ,r))}$, where $N(δ,g)$ is the Moore bound on the smallest possible number of vertices such that there exists a $δ$-regular simple graph with girth $g$, and $φ(δ,r) = \max\{δ+1,\lfloor\frac{rδ}{r-1}\rfloor\}$. Analogue results involving $μ_{n-1}(G)$ and $\frac{μ_1(G)}{μ_{n-1}(G)}$ to characterize vertex-connectivity of graphs with fixed girth and clique number are also presented. Let $D$ be a strongly connected digraph. An arc set $S$ of $D$ is a \emph{restricted arc-cut} of $D$ if $D-S$ has a non-trivial strong component $D_{1}$ such that $D-V(D_{1})$ contains an arc. The \emph{restricted arc-connectivity} $λ'(D)$ of a digraph $D$ is the minimum cardinality over all restricted arc-cuts of $D$. A strongly connected digraph $D$ is \emph{$λ'$-connected} when $λ'(D)$ exists. This paper presents a family $\cal{F}$ of strong digraphs of girth four that are not $λ'$-connected and for every strong digraph $D\notin \cal{F}$ with girth four it follows that it is $λ'$-connected.…
Let $q(G)$ denote the $Q$-index of a graph $G$, which is the largest signless Laplacian eigenvalue of $G$. We prove best possible upper bounds of $q(G)$ and best possible lower bounds of $q(\overline{G})$ for a connected graph $G$ to be $k$-connected and maximally connected, respectively. Similar upper bounds of $q(G)$ and lower bounds of $q(\overline{G})$ to assure $G$ to be super-connected are also obtained. Upper bounds of $q(G)$ and lower bounds of $q(\overline{G})$ to assure a connected triangle-free graph $G$ to be $k$-connected, maximally connected and super-connected are also respectiv…
Let $τ(G)$ and $κ'(G)$ denote the edge-connectivity and the spanning tree packing number of a graph $G$, respectively. Proving a conjecture initiated by Cioaba and Wong, Liu et al. in 2014 showed that for any simple graph $G$ with minimum degree $δ\ge 2k \ge 4$, if the second largest adjacency eigenvalue of $G$ satisfies $λ_2(G) < δ- \frac{2k-1}{δ+1}$, then $τ(G) \ge k$. Similar results involving the Laplacian eigenvalues and the signless Laplacian eigenvalues of $G$ are also obtained. In this paper, we find a function $f(δ, k, g)$ such that for every graph $G$ with minimum degree $δ\ge 2k \ge…
This paper investigates some relationship between the algebraic connectivity and the clique number of graphs. We characterize all extremal graphs which have the maximum and minimum the algebraic connectivity among all graphs of order $n$ with the clique number $r$, respectively. In turn, an upper and lower bounds for the clique number of a graph in terms of the algebraic connectivity are obtained. Moreover, a spectral version of the Erdős-Stone theorem in terms of the algebraic connectivity of graphs is presented.
We prove that every triangle-free graph with maximum degree $Δ$ has list chromatic number at most $(1+o(1))\fracΔ{\ln Δ}$. This matches the best-known bound for graphs of girth at least 5. We also provide a new proof that for any $r\geq 4$ every $K_r$-free graph has list-chromatic number at most $200r\frac{Δ\ln\lnΔ}{\lnΔ}$.
In this work, the classical Nelson -- Hadwiger problem is studied which lies on the edge of combinatorial geometry and graph theory. It concerns colorings of distance graphs in $ {\mathbb R}^n $, i.e., graphs such that their vertices are vectors and their edges are pairs of vectors at a distance from a given set of postive numbers apart. A series of new lower bounds are obtained for the chromatic numbers of such graphs with different restrictions on the clique numbers and the girths.
The cyclic edge-connectivity of a graph $G$ is the least $k$ such that there exists a set of $k$ edges whose removal disconnects $G$ into components where every component contains a cycle. We show that for graphs of minimum degree at least 3 and girth $g$ at least 4, the cyclic edge-connectivity is bounded above by $(Δ-2)g$ where $Δ$ is the maximum degree. We then prove that if the second eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of a $d$-regular graph of girth $g\geq4$ is sufficiently small, then the cyclic edge-connectivity is $(d-2)g$, providing a spectral condition for when this upper bound on cy…
A question of Erdős asks if for every pair of positive integers $r$ and $k$, there exists a graph $H$ having $\textrm{girth}(H)=k$ and the property that every $r$-colouring of the edges of $H$ yields a monochromatic cycle $C_k$. The existence of such graphs was confirmed by the third author and Ruciński. We consider the related numerical problem of determining the smallest such graph with this property. We show that for integers $r$ and $k$, there exists a graph $H$ on $R^{10k^2} k^{15k^3}$ vertices (where $R = R(C_k;r)$ is the $r$-colour Ramsey number for the cycle $C_k$) having $\textrm{girt…
A graph is called hypohamiltonian if it is not hamiltonian but becomes hamiltonian if any vertex is removed. Many hypohamiltonian planar cubic graphs have been found, starting with constructions of Thomassen in 1981. However, all the examples found until now had 4-cycles. In this note we present the first examples of hypohamiltonian planar cubic graphs with cyclic connectivity five, and thus girth five. We show by computer search that the smallest members of this class are three graphs with 76 vertices.
A $k$-$γ_{c}$-edge critical graph is a graph $G$ with the connected domination number $γ_{c}(G) = k$ and $γ_{c}(G + uv) < k$ for every $uv \in E(\overline{G})$. Further, a $2$-connected graph $G$ is said to be $k$-$γ_{c}$-vertex critical if $γ_{c}(G) = k$ and $γ_{c}(G - v) < k$ for all $v \in V(G)$. A maximal $k$-$γ_{c}$-vertex critical graph is a graph which are both $k$-$γ_{c}$-edge critical and $k$-$γ_{c}$-vertex critical. Let $κ, δ, ω$ and $α$ be respectively connectivity minimum degree, clique number and independence number. In this paper, we prove that every maximal $3$-$γ_{c}$-vertex cr…
In extremal graph theory, the problem of finding the elements of a given class of graphs which contain the most cliques traces its routes back to Turán's famous theorem. We consider the implications of the connectivity property of simplicial complexes known as shellability on clique complexes associated with graphs. In this paper, we find the graphs which maximize cliques among all graphs on $n$ vertices with $Δ(G)\leq r$ that have shellable clique complexes.
We prove the existence of a function f: N^2 -> N such that for all p,k in N every (k(p-3) + 14p+14) - connected graph either has k disjoint K_p minors or contains a set of at most f(p,k) vertices whose deletion kills all its K_p minors. For fixed p > 4, the connectivity bound of about k(p-3) is smallest possible, up to an additive constant: if we assume less connectivity in terms of k, there will be no such function f.
For every $r \in \mathbb{N}$, let $θ_r$ denote the graph with two vertices and $r$ parallel edges. The $θ_r$-girth of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of edges of a subgraph of $G$ that can be contracted to $θ_r$. This notion generalizes the usual concept of girth which corresponds to the case $r=2$. In [Minors in graphs of large girth, Random Structures & Algorithms, 22(2):213--225, 2003], Kühn and Osthus showed that graphs of sufficiently large minimum degree contain clique-minors whose order is an exponential function of their girth. We extend this result for the case of $θ_{r}$-girth and …
In this paper, we address the maximum number of vertices of induced forests in subcubic graphs with girth at least four or five. We provide a unified approach to prove that every 2-connected subcubic graph on $n$ vertices and $m$ edges with girth at least four or five, respectively, has an induced forest on at least $n-\frac{2}{9}m$ or $n-\frac{1}{5}m$ vertices, respectively, except for finitely many exceptional graphs. Our results improve a result of Liu and Zhao and are tight in the sense that the bounds are attained by infinitely many 2-connected graphs. Equivalently, we prove that such gra…
The colouring defect of a cubic graph, introduced by Steffen in 2015, is the minimum number of edges that are left uncovered by any set of three perfect matchings. Since a cubic graph has defect $0$ if and only if it is $3$-edge-colourable, this invariant can measure how much a cubic graph differs from a $3$-edge-colourable graph. Our aim is to examine the relationship of colouring defect to oddness, an extensively studied measure of uncolourability of cubic graphs, defined as the smallest number of odd circuits in a $2$-factor. We show that there exist cyclically $5$-edge-connected snarks (cu…
In 1999, De Simone and Körner conjectured that every graph without induced $C_5,C_7,\overline{C}_7$ contains a clique cover $\mathcal C$ and a stable set cover $\mathcal I$ such that every clique in $\mathcal C$ and every stable set in $\mathcal I$ have a vertex in common. This conjecture has roots in information theory and became known as the Normal Graph Conjecture. Here we prove that all graphs of bounded maximum degree and sufficiently large odd girth (linear in the maximum degree) are normal. This implies that for every fixed $d$, random $d$-regular graphs are a.a.s. normal.
A half-square of a bipartite graph $B=(X,Y,E_B)$ has one color class of $B$ as vertex set, say $X$; two vertices are adjacent whenever they have a common neighbor in $Y$. If $G=(V,E_G)$ is the half-square of a planar bipartite graph $B=(V,W,E_B)$, then $G$ is called a map graph, and $B$ is a witness of $G$. Map graphs generalize planar graphs, and have been introduced and investigated by Chen, Grigni and Papadimitriou [STOC 1998, J. ACM 2002]. They proved that recognizing map graphs is in $\mathsf{NP}$ by proving the existence of a witness. Soon later, Thorup [FOCS 1998] claimed that recognizi…
As an extension of the Four-Color Theorem it is conjectured that every planar graph of odd-girth at least $2k+1$ admits a homomorphism to $PC_{2k}=(\mathbb{Z}_2^{2k}, \{e_1, e_2, ...,e_{2k}, J\})$ where $e_i$'s are standard basis and $J$ is all 1 vector. Noting that $PC_{2k}$ itself is of odd-girth $2k+1$, in this work we show that if the conjecture is true, then $PC_{2k}$ is an optimal such a graph both with respect to number of vertices and number of edges. The result is obtained using the notion of walk-power of graphs and their clique numbers. An analogous result is proved for bipartite si…
Hypergraphs are an invaluable tool to understand many hidden patterns in large data sets. Among many ways to represent hypergraph, one useful representation is that of weighted clique expansion. In this paper, we consider this representation for non-uniform hypergraphs. We generalize the spectral results for uniform hypergraphs to non-uniform hypergraphs and show that they extend in a natural way. We provide a bound on the largest eigenvalue with respect to the average degree of neighbours of a vertex in a graph. We also prove an inequality on the boundary of a vertex set in terms of the large…
We prove that for all nonnegative integers k,s there exists c with the following property. Let G be a graph with clique number at most k and chromatic number more than c. Then for every vertex-colouring (not necessarily optimal) of G, some induced subgraph of G is an s-vertex path, and all its vertices have different colours. This extends a recent result of Gyarfas and Sarkozy, who proved the same (when k=2) for graphs G with girth at least five.
The notion of the circular coloring of signed graphs is a recent one that simultaneously extends both notions of the circular coloring of graphs and $0$-free coloring of signed graphs. A circular $r$-coloring of a signed graph $(G, σ)$ is to assign points of a circle of circumference $r$, $r\geq 2$, to the vertices of $G$ such that vertices connected by a positive edge are at circular distance at least $1$ and vertices connected by a negative edge are at circular distance at most $\frac{r}{2}-1$. The infimum of all $r$ for which $(G, σ)$ admits a circular $r$-coloring is said to be the circula…
The clique number of an undirected graph $G$ is the maximum order of a complete subgraph of $G$ and is a well-known lower bound for the chromatic number of $G$. Every proper $k$-coloring of $G$ may be viewed as a homomorphism (an edge-preserving vertex mapping) of $G$ to the complete graph of order $k$. By considering homomorphisms of oriented graphs (digraphs without cycles of length at most 2), we get a natural notion of (oriented) colorings and oriented chromatic number of oriented graphs. An oriented clique is then an oriented graph whose number of vertices and oriented chromatic number co…
If $X$ is a commutative ring with unity, then the unitary Cayley graph of $X$, denoted $G_X$, is defined to be the graph whose vertex set is $X$ and whose edge set is $\{\{a,b\}\colon a-b\in X^\times\}$. When $R$ is a Dedekind domain and $I$ is an ideal of $R$ such that $R/I$ is finite and nontrivial, we refer to $G_{R/I}$ as a \emph{generalized totient graph}. We study generalized totient graphs as generalizations of the graphs $G_{\mathbb{Z}/(n)}$, which have appeared recently in the literature, sometimes under the name \emph{Euler totient Cayley graphs}. We begin by generalizing to Dedekind…
A \emph{$[z, r; g]$-mixed cage} is a mixed graph $z$-regular by arcs, $r$-regular by edges, with girth $g$ and minimum order. %In this paper we study structural properties of mixed cages: Let $n[z,r;g]$ denote the order of a $[z,r;g]$-mixed cage. In this paper we prove that $n[z,r;g]$ is a monotonicity function, with respect of $g$, for $z\in \{1,2\}$, and we use it to prove that the underlying graph of a $[z,r;g]$-mixed cage is 2-connected, for $z\in \{1,2\}$. We also prove that $[z,r;g]$-mixed cages are strong connected. We present bounds of $n[z,r;g]$ and constructions of $[z,r;5]$-mixed gr…
The Mycielskian construction, denoted $μ(G)$, takes a finite simple graph $G$ to a larger graph with of the same clique number but larger chromatic number. The generalized Mycielskian construction, denoted $μ_t(G)$, takes $G$ to a larger graph with the same chromatic number but with larger odd girth. In this chapter we look at symmetry parameters of $μ(G)$ and $μ_t(G)$ in terms of the same parameters of $G$. These symmetry parameters include determining number, distinguishing number, and cost of distinguishing.
We prove that a random $d$-regular graph, with high probability, is a cut sparsifier of the clique with approximation error at most $\left(2\sqrt{\frac 2 π} + o_{n,d}(1)\right)/\sqrt d$, where $2\sqrt{\frac 2 π} = 1.595\ldots$ and $o_{n,d}(1)$ denotes an error term that depends on $n$ and $d$ and goes to zero if we first take the limit $n\rightarrow \infty$ and then the limit $d \rightarrow \infty$. This is established by analyzing linear-size cuts using techniques of Jagannath and Sen derived from ideas in statistical physics, and analyzing small cuts via martingale inequalities. We also prov…
We study a graph parameter related to resolving sets and metric dimension, namely the resolving number, introduced by Chartrand, Poisson and Zhang. First, we establish an important difference between the two parameters: while computing the metric dimension of an arbitrary graph is known to be NP-hard, we show that the resolving number can be computed in polynomial time. We then relate the resolving number to classical graph parameters: diameter, girth, clique number, order and maximum degree. With these relations in hand, we characterize the graphs with resolving number 3 extending other studi…
Rainbow connection number, $rc(G)$, of a connected graph $G$ is the minimum number of colours needed to colour its edges, so that every pair of vertices is connected by at least one path in which no two edges are coloured the same. In this paper we investigate the relationship of rainbow connection number with vertex and edge connectivity. It is already known that for a connected graph with minimum degree $δ$, the rainbow connection number is upper bounded by $3n/(δ+ 1) + 3$ [Chandran et al., 2010]. This directly gives an upper bound of $3n/(λ+ 1) + 3$ and $3n/(κ+ 1) + 3$ for rainbow connectio…
Given a graph H, a graph G is called a Ramsey graph of H if there is a monochromatic copy of H in every coloring of the edges of G with two colors. Two graphs G, H are called Ramsey equivalent if they have the same set of Ramsey graphs. Fox et al. [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 109 (2014), 120--133] asked whether there are two non-isomorphic connected graphs that are Ramsey equivalent. They proved that a clique is not Ramsey equivalent to any other connected graph. Results of Nesetril et al. showed that any two graphs with different clique number [Combinatorica 1(2) (1981), 199--202] or different o…
In this paper we introduce a graph structure, called subspace sum graph $\mathcal{G}(\mathbb{V})$ on a finite dimensional vector space $\mathbb{V}$ where the vertex set is the collection of non-trivial proper subspaces of a vector space and two vertices $W_1,W_2$ are adjacent if $W_1 + W_2=\mathbb{V}$. The diameter, girth, connectivity, maximal independent sets, different variants of domination number, clique number and chromatic number of $\mathcal{G}(\mathbb{V})$ are studied. It is shown that two subspace sum graphs are isomorphic if and only if the base vector spaces are isomorphic. Finally…
Let $G$ be a digraph and $A(G)$ be the adjacency matrix of $G$. Let $D(G)$ be the diagonal matrix with outdegrees of vertices of $G$. For any real $α\in[0,1]$, Liu et al. \cite{LWCL} defined the matrix $A_α(G)$ as $$A_α(G)=αD(G)+(1-α)A(G).$$ The largest modulus of the eigenvalues of $A_α(G)$ is called the $A_α$ spectral radius of $G$. In this paper, we determine the digraphs which attain the maximum (or minimum) $A_α$ spectral radius among all strongly connected digraphs with given parameters such as girth, clique number, vertex connectivity or arc connectivity. We also discuss a number of ope…
We investigate the bounds on algebraic connectivity of graphs subject to constraints on the number of edges, vertices, and topology. We show that the algebraic connectivity for any tree on $n$ vertices and with maximum degree $d$ is bounded above by $2(d-2) \frac{1}{n}+O(\frac{\ln n}{n^{2}}) .$ We then investigate upper bounds on algebraic connectivity for cubic graphs. We show that algebraic connectivity of a cubic graph of girth $g$ is bounded above by $3-2^{3/2}\cos(π/\lfloor g/2\rfloor) ,$ which is an improvement over the bound found by Nilli [A. Nilli, Electron. J. Combin., 11(9), 2004]. …
The intersection ideal graph $Γ(S)$ of a semigroup $S$ is a simple undirected graph whose vertices are all nontrivial left ideals of $S$ and two distinct left ideals $I, J$ are adjacent if and only if their intersection is nontrivial. In this paper, we investigate the connectedness of $Γ(S)$. We show that if $Γ(S)$ is connected then $diam(Γ(S)) \leq 2$. Further we classify the semigroups such that the diameter of their intersection graph is two. Other graph invariants, namely perfectness, planarity, girth, dominance number, clique number, independence number etc. are also discussed. Finally, i…
The subspace sum graph $\mathcal{G}(\mathbb{V})$ on a finite dimensional vector space $\mathbb{V}$ was introduced by Das [Subspace Sum Graph of a Vector Space, arXiv:1702.08245], recently. The vertex set of $\mathcal{G}(\mathbb{V})$ consists of all the nontrivial proper subspaces of $\mathbb{V}$ and two distinct vertices $W_1$ and $W_2$ are adjacent if and only if $W_1+W_2=\mathbb{V}$. In that paper, some structural indices (e.g., diameter, girth, connectivity, domination number, clique number and chromatic number) were studied, but the characterization of automorphisms of $\mathcal{G}(\mathbb…
We study the flow extension of graphs, i.e., pre-assigning a partial flow on the edges incident to a given vertex and aiming to extend to the entire graph. This is closely related to Tutte's $3$-flow conjecture(1972) that every $4$-edge-connected graph admits a nowhere-zero $3$-flow and a $\mathbb{Z}_3$-group connectivity conjecture(3GCC) of Jaeger, Linial, Payan, and Tarsi(1992) that every $5$-edge-connected graph $G$ is $\mathbb{Z}_3$-connected. Our main results show that these conjectures are equivalent to their natural flow extension versions and present some applications. The $3$-flow cas…
\noindent The b-chromatic number of a graph $G$, denoted by $ϕ(G)$, is the largest integer $k$ that $G$ admits a proper coloring by $k$ colors, such that each color class has a vertex that is adjacent to at least one vertex in each of the other color classes. El Sahili and Kouider [About b-colorings of regular graphs, Res. Rep. 1432, LRI, Univ. Orsay, France, 2006] asked whether it is true that every $d$-regular graph $G$ of girth at least 5 satisfies $ϕ(G)=d+1$. Blidia, Maffray, and Zemir [On b-colorings in regular graphs, Discrete Appl. Math. 157 (2009), 1787-1793] showed that the Petersen g…
The $b$-vector $(b_1,b_2\ldots,b_d)$ of a graph $G$ is defined in terms of its clique vector $(c_1,c_2\ldots,c_d)$ by the equation $\sum^d_{i=1}b_i(x+1)^{i-1}=\sum^d_{i=1} c_i x^{i-1},$ where $d$ is the largest cardinality of a clique in $G$. We study the relation of the $b$-vector of a chordal graph $G$ with some structural properties of $G$. In particular, we show that the $b$-vector encodes different aspects of the connectivity and clique dominance of $G$. Furthermore, we relate the $b$-vector with the Betti numbers of the Stanley-Reisner ring associated to clique simplicial complex of $G$.
Let $G$ be a connected graph with maximum degree $Δ\ge 3$. We investigate the upper bound for the chromatic number $χ_γ(G)$ of the power graph $G^γ$. It was proved that $χ_γ(G) \leΔ\frac{(Δ-1)^γ-1}{Δ-2}+1=:M+1$ with equality if and only $G$ is a Moore graph. If $G$ is not a Moore graph, and $G$ holds one of the following conditions: (1) $G$ is non-regular, (2) the girth $g(G) \le 2γ-1$, (3) $g(G) \ge 2γ+2$, and the connectivity $κ(G) \ge 3$ if $γ\ge 3$, $κ(G) \ge 4$ but $g(G) >6$ if $γ=2$, (4) $Δ$ is sufficiently large than a given number only depending on $γ$, then $χ_γ(G) \le M-1$. By means …
We estimate the minimum number of vertices of a cubic graph with given oddness and cyclic connectivity. We prove that a bridgeless cubic graph $G$ with oddness $ω(G)$ other than the Petersen graph has at least $5.41\cdotω(G)$ vertices, and for each integer $k$ with $2\le k\le 6$ we construct an infinite family of cubic graphs with cyclic connectivity $k$ and small oddness ratio $|V(G)|/ω(G)$. In particular, for cyclic connectivity 2, 4, 5, and 6 we improve the upper bounds on the oddness ratio of snarks to 7.5, 13, 25, and 99 from the known values 9, 15, 76, and 118, respectively. In addition,…
