The spectral radius of a uniform hypergraph is defined to be that of the adjacency tensor the hypergraph. It is known that the unique unicyclic hypergraph with the largest spectral radius is a nonlinear hypergraph, and the unique linear unicyclic hypergraph with the largest spectral radius is a power hypergraph. In this paper we determine the the unique linear unicyclic hypergraph with the second or third largest spectral radius, where the former hypergraph is a power hypergraph and the latter hypergraph is a non-power hypergraph.
A connected $k$-uniform hypergraph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges is called $r$-cyclic if $n=m(k-1)-r+1$. For $r=1$ or $2$, the hypergraph is simply called unicyclic or bicyclic. In this paper we investigate hypergraphs that attain larger spectral radii among all simple connected $k$-uniform unicyclic and bicyclic hypergraphs. Specifically, by using some edge operations, the formula on power hypergraph eigenvalues, the weighted incidence matrix and a result on linear unicyclic hypergraphs, we determined the first five hypergraphs with larger spectral radius among all unicyclic hypergraphs and…
We determine the unique hypergraphs with maximum spectral radius among all connected $k$-uniform ($k\geq 3$) unicyclic hypergraphs with matching number at least $z$, and among all connected $k$-uniform ($k\geq 3$) unicyclic hypergraphs with a given matching number, respectively.
The transmission of a connected hypergraph is defined as the summation of distances between all unordered pairs of distinct vertices. We determine the unique uniform unicyclic hypergraphs of fixed size with minimum and maximum transmissions, respectively.
Let $\mathcal{U}(n,k)$ and $Γ(n,k)$ be the set of the $k$-uniform linear and nonlinear unicyclic hypergraphs having perfect matchings with $n$ vertices respectively, where $n\geq k(k-1)$ and $k\geq 3$. By using some techniques of transformations and constructing the incidence matrices for the hypergraphs considered, we get the hypergraphs with the maximal spectral radii among three kinds of hypergraphs, namely $\mathcal{U}(n,k)$ with $n= 2k(k-1)$ and $n\geq 9k(k-1)$, $Γ(n,k)$ with $n\geq k(k-1)$, and $\mathcal{U}(n,k)\cup Γ(n,k)$ with $n\geq 2k(k-1)$, where $k\geq 3$.
In this paper we investigate the hypergraphs whose spectral radii attain the maximum among all uniform hypergraphs with given number of edges. In particular we characterize the hypergraph(s) with maximum spectral radius over all unicyclic hypergraphs, linear or power unicyclic hypergraphs with given girth, linear or power bicyclic hypergraphs, respectively.
The Hosoya index $Z (G)$ of a graph $G$ is defined as the total number of edge independent sets of $G$. In this paper, we extend the research of [J. Ou, On extremal unicyclic molecular graphs with maximal Hosoya index, \textit{Discrete Appl. Math.} 157 (2009) 391--397.] and [Y. Ye, X. Pan, H. Liu, Ordering unicyclic graphs with respect to Hosoya indices and Merrifield-Simmons indices, \textit{MATCH Commun. Math. Comput. Chem.} 59 (2008) 191--202.] and order the largest $n-1$ unicyclic graphs with respect to the Hosoya index.
The independence polynomial of a graph $G$, denoted $I(G,x)$, is the generating polynomial for the number of independent sets of each size. The roots of $I(G,x)$ are called the \textit{independence roots} of $G$. It is known that for every graph $G$, the independence root of smallest modulus, denoted $ξ(G)$, is real. The relation $\preceq$ on the set of all graphs is defined as follows, $H\preceq G$ if and only if $I(H,x)\ge I(G,x)\text{ for all }x\in [ξ(G),0].$ We find the maximum and minimum connected unicyclic and connected well-covered unicyclic graphs of a given order with respect to $\pr…
Given a $k$-uniform hypergraph $G$ with vertex set $[n]$ and edge set $E(G)$, the ABC tensor $\mathcal{ABC}(G)$ of $G$ is the $k$-order $n$-dimensional tensor with \[ \mathcal{ABC}(G)_{i_1, \dots, i_k}= \begin{cases} \dfrac{1}{(k-1)!}\sqrt[k]{\dfrac{\sum_{i\in e}d_{i}-k}{\prod_{i\in e}d_{i}}} & \mbox{if $e\in E(G)$} 0 & \mbox{otherwise} \end{cases} \] for $i_j\in [n]$ with $j\in [k]$, where $d_i$ is the degree of vertex $i$ in $G$. The ABC spectral radius of a uniform hypergraph is the spectral radius of its ABC tensor. We give tight lower and upper bounds for the ABC spectra radius, and deter…
Here we study the spectral radii of some linear hypergraphs, that is, the maximum moduli of the eigenvalues of their corresponding adjacency matrices. We determine the hypertrees having the largest to seventh-largest spectral radii. The hypertrees with the largest and the second-largest spectral radii among all those with a given diameter are identified here. Unicyclic hypergraphs with a fixed cycle length having the largest, the second-largest, and the third-largest spectral radii are also determined. Furthermore, we also find which bicyclic and tricyclic linear hypergraphs have the largest a…
For real $α\in [0,1)$ and a hypergraph $G$, the $α$-spectral radius of $G$ is the largest eigenvalue of the matrix $A_α(G)=αD(G)+(1-α)A(G)$, where $A(G)$ is the adjacency matrix of $G$, which is a symmetric matrix with zero diagonal such that for distinct vertices $u,v$ of $G$, the $(u,v)$-entry of $A(G)$ is exactly the number of edges containing both $u$ and $v$, and $D(G)$ is the diagonal matrix of row sums of $A(G)$. We study the $α$-spectral radius of a hypergraph that is uniform or not necessarily uniform. We propose some local grafting operations that increase or decrease the $α$-spectra…
Frankl and Füredi (1989) conjectured that the $r$-graph with $m$ edges formed by taking the first $m$ sets in the colex ordering of ${\mathbb N}^{(r)}$ has the largest graph-Lagrangian of all $r$-graphs with $m$ edges. In this paper, we establish some bounds for graph-Lagrangians of some special $r$-graphs that support this conjecture.

Let $\mathcal{A(}G\mathcal{)},\mathcal{L(}G\mathcal{)}$ and $\mathcal{Q(}% G\mathcal{)}$ be the adjacency tensor, Laplacian tensor and signless Laplacian tensor of uniform hypergraph $G$, respectively. Denote by $λ(\mathcal{T})$ the largest H-eigenvalue of tensor $\mathcal{T}$. Let $H$ be a uniform hypergraph, and $H^{\prime}$ be obtained from $H$ by inserting a new vertex with degree one in each edge. We prove that $λ(\mathcal{Q(}% H^{\prime}\mathcal{)})\leqλ(\mathcal{Q(}H\mathcal{)}).$ Denote by $G^{k}$ the $k$th power hypergraph of an ordinary graph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ\geq2$. We will…
In this paper, we show that the largest signless Laplacian H-eigenvalue of a connected $k$-uniform hypergraph $G$, where $k \ge 3$, reaches its upper bound $2Δ(G)$, where $Δ(G)$ is the largest degree of $G$, if and only if $G$ is regular. Thus the largest Laplacian H-eigenvalue of $G$, reaches the same upper bound, if and only if $G$ is regular and odd-bipartite. We show that an $s$-cycle $G$, as a $k$-uniform hypergraph, where $1 \le s \le k-1$, is regular if and only if there is a positive integer $q$ such that $k=q(k-s)$. We show that an even-uniform $s$-path and an even-uniform non-regular…
In this paper we consider $j$-tuple-connected components in random $k$-uniform hypergraphs (the $j$-tuple-connectedness relation can be defined by letting two $j$-sets be connected if they lie in a common edge and consider the transitive closure; the case $j=1$ corresponds to the common notion of vertex-connectedness). We determine that the existence of a $j$-tuple-connected component containing $Θ(n^j)$ $j$-sets in random $k$-uniform hypergraphs undergoes a phase transition and show that the threshold occurs at edge probability $\tfrac{(k-j)!}{\binom{k}{j}-1}n^{j-k}$. Our proof extends the re…
Hypergraphs are an invaluable tool to understand many hidden patterns in large data sets. Among many ways to represent hypergraph, one useful representation is that of weighted clique expansion. In this paper, we consider this representation for non-uniform hypergraphs. We generalize the spectral results for uniform hypergraphs to non-uniform hypergraphs and show that they extend in a natural way. We provide a bound on the largest eigenvalue with respect to the average degree of neighbours of a vertex in a graph. We also prove an inequality on the boundary of a vertex set in terms of the large…
Chung, Graham, and Wilson proved that a graph is quasirandom if and only if there is a large gap between its first and second largest eigenvalue. Recently, the authors extended this characterization to k-uniform hypergraphs, but only for the so-called coregular k-uniform hypergraphs. In this paper, we extend this characterization to all k-uniform hypergraphs, not just the coregular ones. Specifically, we prove that if a k-uniform hypergraph satisfies the correct count of a specially defined four-cycle, then there is a gap between its first and second largest eigenvalue.
Let p(k) denote the partition function of k. For each k >= 2, we describe a list of p(k)-1 quasirandom properties that a k-uniform hypergraph can have. Our work connects previous notions on linear hypergraph quasirandomness of Kohayakawa-Rödl-Skokan and Conlon-Hàn-Person-Schacht and the spectral approach of Friedman-Wigderson. For each of the quasirandom properties that are described, we define a largest and second largest eigenvalue. We show that a hypergraph satisfies these quasirandom properties if and only if it has a large spectral gap. This answers a question of Conlon-Hàn-Person-Schacht…
Let k >= 2 and F be a linear k-uniform hypergraph with v vertices. We prove that if n is sufficiently large and v|n, then every quasirandom k-uniform hypergraph on n vertices with constant edge density and minimum degree $Ω(n^{k-1})$ admits a perfect F-packing. The case k = 2 follows immediately from the blowup lemma of Komlós, Sárközy, and Szemerédi. We also prove positive results for some nonlinear F but at the same time give counterexamples for rather simple F that are close to being linear. Finally, we address the case when the density tends to zero, and prove (in analogy with the graph ca…
Let $G$ be a simple graph or hypergraph, and let $A(G),L(G),Q(G)$ be the adjacency, Laplacian and signless Laplacian tensors of $G$ respectively. The largest $H$-eigenvalues (resp., the spectral radii) of $L(G),Q(G)$ are denoted respectively by $λ_{\max}^L(G), λ_{\max}^Q(G)$ (resp., $ρ^L(G), ρ^Q(G)$). For a connected non-bipartite simple graph $G$, $λ_{\max}^L(G)=ρ^L(G) < ρ^Q(G)$. But this does not hold for non-odd-bipartite hypergraphs. We will investigate this problem by considering a class of generalized power hypergraphs $G^{k,\frac{k}{2}}$, which are constructed from simple connected grap…
The arithmetic-geometric matrix $A_{ag}(G)$ of a graph $G$ is a square matrix, where the $(i,j)$-entry is equal to $\displaystyle \frac{d_{i}+d_{j}}{2\sqrt{d_{i}d_{j}}}$ if the vertices $v_{i}$ and $v_{j}$ are adjacent, and 0 otherwise. The arithmetic-geometric spectral radius of $G$, denoted by $ρ_{ag}(G)$, is the largest eigenvalue of the arithmetic-geometric matrix $A_{ag}(G)$. Let $S_{n}$ be the star of order $n\geq3$ and $S_{n}+e$ be the unicyclic graph obtained from $S_{n}$ by adding an edge. In this paper, we prove that for any tree $T$ of order $n\geq2$, $\displaystyle 2\cos\fracπ{n+1}…
In this paper we show how the $α$-spectral radius changes under the edge grafting operations on connected $k$-uniform hypergraphs. We characterize the extremal hypertree for $α$-spectral radius among $k$-uniform non-caterpillar hypergraphs with given order, size and diameter. we also characerize the second largest $α$-spectral radius among all $k$-uniform supertrees on $n$ vertices by two methods.
In this paper, we introduce the class of cored hypergraphs and power hypergraphs, and investigate the properties of their Laplacian H-eigenvalues. From an ordinary graph, one may generate a $k$-uniform hypergraph, called the $k$th power hypergraph of that graph. Power hypergraphs are cored hypergraphs, but not vice versa. Hyperstars, hypercycles, hyperpaths are special cases of power hypergraphs, while sunflowers are a subclass of cored hypergraphs, but not power graphs in general. We show that the largest Laplacian H-eigenvalue of an even-uniform cored hypergraph is equal to its largest signl…
The independence number of a hypergraph H is the size of a largest set of vertices containing no edge of H. In this paper, we prove new sharp bounds on the independence number of n-vertex (r+1)-uniform hypergraphs in which every r-element set is contained in at most d edges, where 0 < d < n/(log n)^{3r^2}. Our relatively short proof extends a method due to Shearer. We give an application to hypergraph Ramsey numbers involving independent neighborhoods.
For $0\leα<1$ and a uniform hypergraph $G$, the $α$-spectral radius of $G$ is the largest $H$-eigenvalue of $α\mathcal{D}(G) +(1-α)\mathcal{A}(G)$, where $\mathcal{D}(G)$ and $\mathcal{A}(G)$ are the diagonal tensor of degrees and the adjacency tensor of $G$, respectively. We give upper bounds for the $α$-spectral radius of a uniform hypergraph, propose some transformations that increase the $α$-spectral radius, and determine the unique hypergraphs with maximum $α$-spectral radius in some classes of uniform hypergraphs.
Every Steiner triple system is a uniform hypergraph. The coloring of hypergraph and its special case Steiner triple systems, {STS}$(v)$, is studied extensively. But the defining set of the coloring of hypergraph even its special case {STS}$(v)$, is not explored yet. We study minimum defining set and the largest minimal defining set for $3$-coloring of {STS}$(v)$. We determined minimum defining set and the largest minimal defining set, for all non-isomorphic {STS}$(v)$, $v\le 15$. Also we have found the {\sf defining number} for all Steiner triple systems of order $v$, and some lower bounds for…
A family of sets F (and the corresponding family of 0-1 vectors) is called t-cancellative if for all distict t+2 members A_1,... A_t and B,C from F the union of A_1,..., A_t and B differs from the union of A_1, ..., A_t and C. Let c(n,t) be the size of the largest t-cancellative family on n elements, and let c_k(n,t) denote the largest k-uniform family. We significantly improve the previous upper bounds, e.g., we show c(n,2)< 2^0.322n (for n> n_0). Using an algebraic construction we show that the order of magnitude of c_{2k}(n,2) is n^k for each k (when n goes to infinity).
The Fano plane is the unique linear 3-uniform hypergraph on seven vertices and seven hyperedges. It was recently proved that, for all $n \geq 8$, the balanced complete bipartite 3-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices, denoted by $B_n$, is the 3-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices with the largest number of hyperedges that does not contain a copy of the Fano plane. For sufficiently large $r$ and $n$, we show that $B_n$ admits the largest number of $r$-edge colorings with no rainbow copy of the Fano plane.
We investigate the asymptotic version of the Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem for the random $k$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}^k(n,p)$. For $2 \leq k(n) \leq n/2$, let $N=\binom{n}k$ and $D=\binom{n-k}k$. We show that with probability tending to 1 as $n\to\infty$, the largest intersecting subhypergraph of $\mathcal{H}^k(n,p)$ has size $(1+o(1))p\frac kn N$, for any $p\gg \frac nk\ln^2\!\left(\frac nk\right)D^{-1}$. This lower bound on $p$ is asymptotically best possible for $k=Θ(n)$. For this range of $k$ and $p$, we are able to show stability as well. A different behavior occurs when $k = o(n)$. In th…
In 1970 Smith classified all connected graphs with the spectral radius at most $2$. Here the spectral radius of a graph is the largest eigenvalue of its adjacency matrix. Recently, the definition of spectral radius has been extended to $r$-uniform hypergraphs. In this paper, we generalize the Smith's theorem to $r$-uniform hypergraphs. We show that the smallest limit point of the spectral radii of connected $r$-uniform hypergraphs is $ρ_r=(r-1)!\sqrt[r]{4}$. We discovered a novel method for computing the spectral radius of hypergraphs, and classified all connected $r$-uniform hypergraphs with …
Given a tree T on v vertices and an integer k exceeding one. One can define the k-expansion T^k as a k-uniform linear hypergraph by enlarging each edge with a new, distinct set of (k-2) vertices. Then T^k has v+ (v-1)(k-2) vertices. The aim of this paper is to show that using the delta-system method one can easily determine asymptotically the size of the largest T^k-free n-vertex hypergraph, i.e., the Turan number of T^k.
Given two 3-uniform hypergraphs F and G, we say that G has an F-covering if we can cover V(G) by copies of F. The minimum codegree of G is the largest integer d such that every pair of vertices from V(G) is contained in at least d triples from E(G). Define c_2(n,F) to be the largest minimum codegree among all n-vertex 3-graphs G that contain no F-covering. This is a natural problem intermediate (but distinct) from the well-studied Turán problems and tiling problems. In this paper, we determine c_2(n, K_4) (for n>98) and the associated extremal configurations (for n>998), where K_4 denotes the …
An $r$-graph is an $r$-uniform hypergraph tree (or $r$-tree) if its edges can be ordered as $E_1,\ldots, E_m$ such that $\forall i>1 \, \exists α(i)<i$ such that $E_i\cap (\bigcup_{j=1}^{i-1} E_j)\subseteq E_{α(i)}$. The Turán number $ex(n,{\cal H})$ of an $r$-graph ${\cal H}$ is the largest size of an $n$-vertex $r$-graph that does not contain ${\cal H}$. A cross-cut of ${\cal H}$ is a set of vertices in ${\cal H}$ that contains exactly one vertex of each edge of ${\cal H}$. The cross-cut number $σ({\cal H})$ of ${\cal H}$ is the minimum size of a cross-cut of ${\cal H}$. We show that for a l…
For $0\le α\le 1$, Nikiforov proposed to study the spectral properties of the family of matrices $A_α(G)=αD(G)+(1-α)A(G)$ of a graph $G$, where $D(G)$ is the degree diagonal matrix and $A(G)$ is the adjacency matrix. The $α$-spectral radius of $G$ is the largest eigenvalue of $A_α(G)$. We give upper bounds for $α$-spectral radius for unicyclic graphs $G$ with maximum degree $Δ\ge 2$, connected irregular graphs with given maximum degree and and some other graph parameters, and graphs with given domination number, respectively. We determine the unique tree with second maximum $α$-spectral radius…
A k-uniform linear cycle of length s is a cyclic list of k-sets A_1,..., A_s such that consecutive sets intersect in exactly one element and nonconsecutive sets are disjoint. For all k at least 5 and s at least 3 and sufficiently large n we determine the largest size of a k-uniform set family on [n] not containing a linear cycle of length s. For odd s=2t+1 the unique extremal family F_S consists of all k-sets in [n] intersecting a fixed t-set S in [n]. For even s=2t+2, the unique extremal family consists of F_S plus all the k-sets outside S containing some fixed two elements. For k at least 4 …
Let $\mc{K}_{3,3}^3$ be the 3-graph with 15 vertices $\{x_i, y_i: 1 \le i \le 3\}$ and $\{z_{ij}: 1 \le i,j \le 3\}$, and 11 edges $\{x_1, x_2, x_3\}$, $\{y_1, y_2, y_3\}$ and $\{\{x_i, y_j, z_{ij}\}: 1 \le i,j \le 3\}$. We show that for large $n$, the unique largest $\mc{K}_{3,3}^3$-free 3-graph on $n$ vertices is a balanced blow-up of the complete 3-graph on 5 vertices. Our proof uses the stability method and a result on lagrangians of intersecting families that has independent interest.
The spectrum of a graph is closely related to many graph parameters. In particular, the spectral gap of a regular graph which is the difference between its valency and second eigenvalue, is widely seen an algebraic measure of connectivity and plays a key role in the theory of expander graphs. In this paper, we extend previous work done for graphs and bipartite graphs and present a linear programming method for obtaining an upper bound on the order of a regular uniform hypergraph with prescribed distinct eigenvalues. Furthermore, we obtain a general upper bound on the order of a regular uniform…
Let $\mathbb{Q}_{k,n}$ be the set of the connected $k$-uniform weighted hypergraphs with $n$ vertices, where $k,n\geq 3$. For a hypergraph $G\in \mathbb{Q}_{k,n}$, let $\mathcal{A}(G)$, $\mathcal{L} (G)$ and $\mathcal{Q} (G)$ be its adjacency tensor, Laplacian tensor and signless Laplacian tensor, respectively. The spectral radii of $\mathcal{A}(G)$ and $\mathcal{Q} (G)$ are investigated. Some basic properties of the $H$-eigenvalue, the $H^{+}$-eigenvalue and the $H^{++}$-eigenvalue of $\mathcal{A}(G)$, $\mathcal{L} (G)$ and $\mathcal{Q} (G)$ are presented. Several lower and upper bounds of th…
One way to study the combinatorics of finite metric spaces is to study the betweenness relation associated with the metric space. In the hypergraph metrization problem, one has to find and characterize metric betweennesses whose collinear triples (or alternatively, non-degenerate triangles) coincide with the edges of a given $3$-uniform hypergraph. Metrizability of different kinds of hypergraphs was investigated in the last decades. Chen showed that steiner triple systems are not metrizable, while Richmond and Richmond characterized linear betweennesses, i.e. metric betweennesses that realize …

A linear cycle in a hypergraph $H$ is a cyclic sequence of hyperedges such that two consecutive hyperedges intersect in exactly one element and two nonconsecutive hyperedges are disjoint and $α(H)$ denotes the size of a largest independent set of $H$. In this note, we show that the vertex set of every $3$-uniform hypergraph $H$ can be covered by at most $α(H)$ pairwise edge-disjoint linear cycles (where we accept a vertex and a hyperedge as a linear cycle), proving a weaker version of a conjecture of Gyárfás and Sárközy.
Several new spectral properties of the normalized Laplacian defined for oriented hypergraphs are shown. The eigenvalue $1$ and the case of duplicate vertices are discussed; two Courant nodal domain theorems are established; new quantities that bound the eigenvalues are introduced. In particular, the Cheeger constant is generalized and it is shown that the classical Cheeger bounds can be generalized for some classes of hypergraphs; it is shown that a geometric quantity used to study zonotopes bounds the largest eigenvalue from below, and that the notion of coloring number can be generalized and…
Let $S_{1}(m, d, k)$ be the $k$-uniform supertree obtained from a loose path $P:v_{1}, e_{1}, v_{2}, \ldots,v_{d}, e_{d}, v_{d+1}$ with length $d$ by attaching $m-d$ edges at vertex $v_{\lfloor\frac{d}{2}\rfloor+1}.$ Let $\mathbb{S}(m,d,k)$ be the set of $k$-uniform supertrees with $m$ edges and diameter $d$ and $q(G)$ be the signless Laplacian spectral radius of a $k$-uniform hypergraph $G$. In this paper, we mainly determine $S_{1}(m,d,k)$ with the largest signless Laplacian spectral radius among all supertrees in $\mathbb{S}(m,d,k)$ for $3\leq d\leq m-1$. Furthermore, we determine the uniqu…
