The spectrum of a graph is closely related to many graph parameters. In particular, the spectral gap of a regular graph which is the difference between its valency and second eigenvalue, is widely seen an algebraic measure of connectivity and plays a key role in the theory of expander graphs. In this paper, we extend previous work done for graphs and bipartite graphs and present a linear programming method for obtaining an upper bound on the order of a regular uniform hypergraph with prescribed distinct eigenvalues. Furthermore, we obtain a general upper bound on the order of a regular uniform hypergraph whose second eigenvalue is bounded by a given value. Our results improve and extend previous work done by Feng-Li (1996) on Alon-Boppana theorems for regular hypergraphs and by Dinitz-Schapira-Shahaf (2020) on the Moore or degree-diameter problem. We also determine the largest order of an $r$-regular $u$-uniform hypergraph with second eigenvalue at most $θ$ for several parameters $(r,u,θ)$. In particular, orthogonal arrays give the structure of the largest hypergraphs with second eigenvalue at most $1$ for every sufficiently large $r$. Moreover, we show that a generalized Moore geometry has the largest spectral gap among all hypergraphs of that order and degree.
Motzkin and Straus established a close connection between the maximum clique problem and a solution (namely graph-Lagrangians) to the maximum value of a class of homogeneous quadratic multilinear functions over the standard simplex of the Euclidean space in 1965. This connection provides a new proof of Turán's theorem. Recently, an extension of Motzkin-Straus theorem was proved for non-uniform hypergraphs whose edges contain 1 or 2 vertices in \cite{PPTZ}. It is interesting if similar results hold for other non-uniform hypergraphs. In this paper, we give some connection between polynomial prog…
Here, we represent a general hypergraph by a matrix and study its spectrum. We extend the definition of equitable partition and joining operation for hypergraphs, and use those to compute eigenvalues of different hypergraphs. We derive the characteristics polynomial of a complete $m$-uniform $m$-partite hypergraph $K^m_{n_1,n_2,\dots,n_m}$. Studying edge corona of hypergraphs we find the complete spectrum of $s$-loose cycles $C^m_{L(s;n)}$ for $m \geq 2s+1$ and the characteristics polynomial of a $s$-loose paths $P^{(m)}_{L(s;n)}$. Some of the eigenvalues of $P^{(m)}_{L(s;n)}$ are also derived…
Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a connected $k$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices and $m$ hyperedges. In [A.~Banerjee, On the spectrum of hypergraph, Linear Algebra and its Application, 614(2021), 82--110], Anirban Banerjee introduced a new adjacency matrix for hypergraphs. In this article we consider the corresponding signless Laplacian matrix $Q(\mathcal{H})$ and discuss about its spectrum.
The notion of spectrum of first-order properties introduced by J. Spencer for Erdos-Renyi random graph is considered in relation to random uniform hypergraphs. We study properties of spectrum for first-order formulae with bounded quantifier depth and estimate the values of minimum and maximum points of this spectrum. We also consider the set of limit points of the spectrum and give a bound for its minimum value.
In this paper, we give a reduced formula of the characteristic polynomial of $k$-uniform hypergraphs with a pendant edge. And the explicit characteristic polynomial and all distinct eigenvalues of $k$-uniform hyperpath are given.
A mixed hypergraph is a triple $H=(V,\mathcal{C},\mathcal{D})$, where $V$ is a set of vertices, $\mathcal{C}$ and $\mathcal{D}$ are sets of hyperedges. A vertex-coloring of $H$ is proper if $C$-edges are not totally multicolored and $D$-edges are not monochromatic. The feasible set $S(H)$ of $H$ is the set of all integers, $s$, such that $H$ has a proper coloring with $s$ colors. Bujtás and Tuza [Graphs and Combinatorics 24 (2008), 1--12] gave a characterization of feasible sets for mixed hypergraphs with all $C$- and $D$-edges of the same size $r$, $r\geq 3$. In this note, we give a short pro…
Fractional graph isomorphism is the linear relaxation of an integer programming formulation of graph isomorphism. It preserves some invariants of graphs, like degree sequences and equitable partitions, but it does not preserve others like connectivity, clique and independence numbers, chromatic number, vertex and edge cover numbers, matching number, domination and total domination numbers. In this work, we extend the concept of fractional graph isomorphism to hypergraphs, and give an alternative characterization, analogous to one of those that are known for graphs. With this new concept we pro…
Let $S=\{n_1,n_2,...,n_t\}$ be a finite set of positive integers with $\min(S)\geq 3$ and $t\geq 2$. For any positive integers $s_1,s_2,...,s_t$, we construct a family of 3-uniform bi-hypergraphs ${\cal H}$ with the feasible set $S$ and $r_{n_i}=s_i, i=1,2,...,t$, where each $r_{n_i}$ is the $n_i$th component of the chromatic spectrum of ${\cal H}$. As a result, we solve one open problem for 3-uniform bi-hypergraphs proposed by Bujtás and Tuza in 2008. Moreover, we find a family of sub-hypergraphs with the same feasible set and the same chromatic spectrum as it's own. In particular, we obtain …
In this paper, we present an equitable partition theorem of tensors, which gives the relations between $H$-eigenvalues of a tensor and its quotient equitable tensor and extends the equitable partitions of graphs to hypergraphs. Furthermore, with the aid of it, some properties and $H$-eigenvalues of the generalized power hypergraphs are obtained, which extends some known results, including some results of Yuan, Qi and Shao.
For a hypergraph $H$, define its intersection spectrum $I(H)$ as the set of all intersection sizes $|E\cap F|$ of distinct edges $E,F\in E(H)$. In their seminal paper from 1973 which introduced the local lemma, Erdős and Lovász asked: how large must the intersection spectrum of a $k$-uniform $3$-chromatic intersecting hypergraph be? They showed that such a hypergraph must have at least three intersection sizes, and conjectured that the size of the intersection spectrum tends to infinity with $k$. Despite the problem being reiterated several times over the years by Erdős and other researchers, …
Here we study the spectral properties of an underlying weighted graph of a non-uniform hypergraph by introducing different connectivity matrices, such as adjacency, Laplacian and normalized Laplacian matrices. We show that different structural properties of a hypergrpah, can be well studied using spectral properties of these matrices. Connectivity of a hypergraph is also investigated by the eigenvalues of these operators. Spectral radii of the same are bounded by the degrees of a hypergraph. The diameter of a hypergraph is also bounded by the eigenvalues of its connectivity matrices. We charac…
It is well known that a graph is bipartite if and only if the spectrum of its adjacency matrix is symmetric. In the present paper, this assertion is dissected into three separate matrix results of wider scope, which are extended also to hypermatrices. To this end the concept of bipartiteness is generalized by a new monotone property of cubical hypermatrices, called odd-colorable matrices. It is shown that a nonnegative symmetric $r$-matrix $A$ has a symmetric spectrum if and only if $r$ is even and $A$ is odd-colorable. This result also solves a problem of Pearson and Zhang about hypergraphs w…
The spectral theory of the normalized Laplacian for chemical hypergraphs is further investigated. The signless normalized Laplacian is introduced and it is shown that its spectrum for classical hypergraphs coincides with the spectrum of the normalized Laplacian for bipartite chemical hypergraphs. Furthermore, the spectra of special families of hypergraphs are established.
A generalized power hypergraph $\mathcal{H}^k_s$ is obtained from a base hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ by means of some simple edge-expansion operations. Kang, Liu, Qi and Yuan [8] proved that the nonzero eigenvalues of $\mathcal{H}$ give rise to nonzero eigenvalues of $\mathcal{H}^k_s$. In this paper we show that all nonzero eigenvalues of $\mathcal{H}^k_s$ may be computed from the eigenvalues of its base hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ and of its subgraphs. To prove this, we derive spectral results about edge-expansion operations that may be interesting on their own sake.
We consider vertex colourings of $r$-uniform hypergraphs $H$ in the classical sense, that is such that no edge has all its vertices given the same colour, and $(2,2)$-colourings of $H$ in which the vertices in any edge are given exactly two colours. This is a special case of constrained colourings introduced by Bujtas and Tuza which, in turn, is a generalisation of Voloshin's colourings of mixed hypergraphs. We study, $χ(H)$, the classical chromatic number, and the $(2,2)$-spectrum of $H$, that is, the set of integers $k$ for which $H$ has a $(2,2)$-colouring using exactly $k$ colours. We pres…
We look at colourings of $r$-uniform hypergraphs, focusing our attention on unique colourability and gaps in the chromatic spectrum. The pattern of an edge $E$ in an $r$-uniform hypergraph $H$ whose vertices are coloured is the partition of $r$ induced by the colour classes of the vertices in $E$. Let $Q$ be a set of partitions of $r$. A $Q$-colouring of $H$ is a colouring of its vertices such that only patterns appearing in $Q$ are allowed. We first show that many known hypergraph colouring problems, including Ramsey theory, can be stated in the language of $Q$-colourings. Then, using as our …
Two $k$-uniform hypergraphs are said to be cospectral (E-cospectral), if their adjacency tensors have the same characteristic polynomial (E-characteristic polynomial). A $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$ is said to be determined by its spectrum, if there is no other non-isomorphic $k$-uniform hypergraph cospectral with $H$. In this note, we give a method for constructing E-cospectral hypergraphs, which is similar with Godsil-McKay switching. Some hypergraphs are shown to be determined by their spectra.
The generalized power of a simple graph $G$, denoted by $G^{k,s}$, is obtained from $G$ by blowing up each vertex into an $s$-set and each edge into a $k$-set, where $1 \le s \le \frac{k}{2}$. When $s < \frac{k}{2}$, $G^{k,s}$ is always odd-bipartite. It is known that $G^{k,{k \over 2}}$ is non-odd-bipartite if and only if $G$ is non-bipartite, and $G^{k,{k \over 2}}$ has the same adjacency (respectively, signless Laplacian) spectral radius as $G$. In this paper, we prove that, regardless of multiplicities, the $H$-spectrum of $\A(G^{k,\frac{k}{2}})$ (respectively, $\Q(G^{k,\frac{k}{2}})$) con…
Let $r\geq2$ and $r$ be even. An $r$-hypergraph $G$ on $n$ vertices is called odd-colorable if there exists a map $φ:[n]\rightarrow\lbrack r]$ such that for any edge $\{j_{1},j_{2},\cdots,j_{r}\}$ of $G$, we have $φ(j_{1})+φ(j_{2})+\cdot\cdot\cdot+φ(j_{r})\equiv r/2(\operatorname{mod}r).$ In this paper, we first determine that, if $r=2^{q}(2t+1)$ and $n\ge 2^{q}(2^{q}-1)r$, then the maximum chromatic number in the class of the odd-colorable $r$-hypergraphs on $n$ vertices is $2^q$, which answers a question raised by V. Nikiforov recently in [V. Nikiforov, Hypergraphs and hypermatrices with sym…
A $k$-uniform hypergraph $G=(V,E)$ is called odd-bipartite ([5]), if $k$ is even and there exists some proper subset $V_1$ of $V$ such that each edge of $G$ contains odd number of vertices in $V_1$. Odd-bipartite hypergraphs are generalizations of the ordinary bipartite graphs. We study the spectral properties of the connected odd-bipartite hypergraphs. We prove that the Laplacian H-spectrum and signless Laplacian H-spectrum of a connected $k$-uniform hypergraph $G$ are equal if and only if $k$ is even and $G$ is odd-bipartite. We further give several spectral characterizations of the connecte…
Among all uniform hypergraphs with even uniformity, the odd-transversal or odd-bipartite hypergraphs are more close to bipartite simple graphs from the viewpoint of both structure and spectrum. A hypergraph is called minimal non-odd-transversal if it is non-odd-transversal but deleting any edge results in an odd-transversal hypergraph. In this paper we give an equivalent characterization of the minimal non-odd-transversal hypergraphs by the degrees and the rank of its incidence matrix over $\mathbb{Z}_2$. If a minimal non-odd-transversal hypergraph is uniform, then it has even uniformity, and …
For any set $S$ of positive integers, a mixed hypergraph ${\cal H}$ is a one-realization of $S$ if its feasible set is $S$ and each entry of its chromatic spectrum is either 0 or 1. In this paper, we determine the minimum size of 3-uniform bi-hypergraphs which are one-realizations of a given set $S$. As a result, we partially solve an open problem proposed by Bujt$\acute{\rm a}$s and Tuza in 2008.
We present progress on the problem of asymptotically describing the adjacency eigenvalues of random and complete uniform hypergraphs. There is a natural conjecture arising from analogy with random matrix theory that connects these spectra to that of the all-ones hypermatrix. Several of the ingredients along a possible path to this conjecture are established, and may be of independent interest in spectral hypergraph/hypermatrix theory. In particular, we provide a bound on the spectral radius of the symmetric Bernoulli hyperensemble, and show that the spectrum of the complete \(k\)-uniform hyper…

For a $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$, we obtain some trace formulas for the Laplacian tensor of $H$, which imply that $\sum_{i=1}^nd_i^s$ ($s=1,\ldots,k$) is determined by the Laplacian spectrum of $H$, where $d_1,\ldots,d_n$ is the degree sequence of $H$. Using trace formulas for the Laplacian tensor, we obtain expressions for some coefficients of the Laplacian polynomial of a regular hypergraph. We give some spectral characterizations of odd-bipartite hypergraphs, and give a partial answer to a question posed by Shao et al \cite{ShaoShanWu}. We also give some spectral properties of power hypergr…
A constrained colouring or, more specifically, an $(α,β)$-colouring of a hypergraph $H$, is an assignment of colours to its vertices such that no edge of $H$ contains less than $α$ or more than $β$ vertices with different colours. This notion, introduced by B{ú}jtas and Tuza, generalises both classical hypergraph colourings and the more general Voloshin colourings of hypergraphs. In fact, for $r$-uniform hypergraphs, classical colourings correspond to $(2,r)$-colourings while an important instance of Voloshin colourings of $r$-uniform hypergraphs gives $(2, r-1)$-colourings. One intriguing asp…
Hypergraphs are a generalization of graphs in which edges can connect any number of vertices. They allow the modeling of complex networks with higher-order interactions, and their spectral theory studies the qualitative properties that can be inferred from the spectrum, i.e. the multiset of the eigenvalues, of an operator associated to a hypergraph. It is expected that a small perturbation of a hypergraph, such as the removal of a few vertices or edges, does not lead to a major change of the eigenvalues. In particular, it is expected that the eigenvalues of the original hypergraph interlace th…
A $t$-dimensional orthogonal representation of a hypergraph is an assignment of nonzero vectors in $\mathbb{R}^t$ to its vertices, such that every hyperedge contains two vertices whose vectors are orthogonal. The orthogonality dimension of a hypergraph $H$, denoted by $\overlineξ(H)$, is the smallest integer $t$ for which there exists a $t$-dimensional orthogonal representation of $H$. In this paper we study computational aspects of the orthogonality dimension of graphs and hypergraphs. We prove that for every $k \geq 4$, it is $\mathsf{NP}$-hard (resp. quasi-$\mathsf{NP}$-hard) to distinguish…
The independence number, coloring number and related parameters are investigated in the setting of oriented hypergraphs using the spectrum of the normalized Laplace operator. For the independence number, both an inertia--like bound and a ratio--like bound are shown. A Sandwich Theorem involving the clique number, the vector chromatic number and the coloring number is proved, as well as a lower bound for the vector chromatic number in terms of the smallest and the largest eigenvalue of the normalized Laplacian. In addition, spectral partition numbers are studied in relation to the coloring numb…
The Harary-Sachs theorem for $k$-uniform hypergraphs equates the codegree-$d$ coefficient of the adjacency characteristic polynomial of a uniform hypergraph with a weighted sum of subgraph counts over certain multi-hypergraphs with $d$ edges. We begin by showing that the classical Harary-Sachs theorem for graphs is indeed a special case of this general theorem. To this end we apply the generalized Harary-Sachs theorem to the leading coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of various hypergraphs. In particular, we provide explicit and asymptotic formulas for the contribution of the $k$-un…
Several new spectral properties of the normalized Laplacian defined for oriented hypergraphs are shown. The eigenvalue $1$ and the case of duplicate vertices are discussed; two Courant nodal domain theorems are established; new quantities that bound the eigenvalues are introduced. In particular, the Cheeger constant is generalized and it is shown that the classical Cheeger bounds can be generalized for some classes of hypergraphs; it is shown that a geometric quantity used to study zonotopes bounds the largest eigenvalue from below, and that the notion of coloring number can be generalized and…
In this paper we introduce a new operation for Linear Programming (LP), called LP complementation, which resembles many properties of LP duality. Given a maximisation (resp.~minimisation) LP $P$, we define its complement $Q$ as a specific minimisation (resp.~maximisation) LP with the same objective function as $P$. Our central result is the LP complementation theorem, that establishes the following relationship between the optimal value $\text{Opt}(P)$ of $P$ and the optimal value $\text{Opt}(Q)$ of its complement: $\frac{1}{\text{Opt}(P)}+\frac{1}{\text{Opt}(Q)}=1$. The LP complementation ope…
The hypergraph Moore bound is an elegant statement that characterizes the extremal trade-off between the girth - the number of hyperedges in the smallest cycle or even cover (a subhypergraph with all degrees even) and size - the number of hyperedges in a hypergraph. For graphs (i.e., $2$-uniform hypergraphs), a bound tight up to the leading constant was proven in a classical work of Alon, Hoory and Linial [AHL02]. For hypergraphs of uniformity $k>2$, an appropriate generalization was conjectured by Feige [Fei08]. The conjecture was settled up to an additional $\log^{4k+1} n$ factor in the size…
Let $S$ be a finite set of positive integers. A mixed hypergraph ${\cal H}$ is a one-realization of $S$ if its feasible set is $S$ and each entry of its chromatic spectrum is either 0 or 1. In [P. Zhao, K. Diao, Y. Chang and K. Wang, The smallest one-realization of a given set \uppercase\expandafter{\romannumeral2}, Discrete Math. 312 (2012) 2946--2951], we determined the minimum number of vertices of a 3-uniform bi-hypergraph which is a one-realization of $S$. In this paper, we generalize this result to $r$-uniform bi-hypergraphs.
Finding exact Ramsey numbers is a problem typically restricted to relatively small graphs. The flag algebra method was developed to find asymptotic results for very large graphs, so it seems that the method is not suitable for finding small Ramsey numbers. But this intuition is wrong, and we will develop a technique to do just that in this paper. We find new upper bounds for many small graph and hypergraph Ramsey numbers. As a result, we prove the exact values $R(K_4^-,K_4^-,K_4^-)=28$, $R(K_8,C_5)= 29$, $R(K_9,C_6)= 41$, $R(Q_3,Q_3)=13$, $R(K_{3,5},K_{1,6})=17$, $R(C_3, C_5, C_5)= 17$, and $R…
The $k$-power hypergraph $G^{(k)}$ is the $k$-uniform hypergraph that is obtained by adding $k-2$ new vertices to each edge of a graph $G$, for $k \geq 3$. A parity-closed walk in $G$ is a closed walk that uses each edge an even number of times. In an earlier paper, we determined the eigenvalues of the adjacency tensor of $G^{(k)}$ using the eigenvalues of signed subgraphs of $G$. Here, we express the entire spectrum (that is, we determine all multiplicities and the characteristic polynomial) of $G^{(k)}$ in terms of parity-closed walks of $G$. Moreover, we give an explicit expression for the …
Let $G$ be a simple graph or hypergraph, and let $A(G),L(G),Q(G)$ be the adjacency, Laplacian and signless Laplacian tensors of $G$ respectively. The largest $H$-eigenvalues (resp., the spectral radii) of $L(G),Q(G)$ are denoted respectively by $λ_{\max}^L(G), λ_{\max}^Q(G)$ (resp., $ρ^L(G), ρ^Q(G)$). For a connected non-bipartite simple graph $G$, $λ_{\max}^L(G)=ρ^L(G) < ρ^Q(G)$. But this does not hold for non-odd-bipartite hypergraphs. We will investigate this problem by considering a class of generalized power hypergraphs $G^{k,\frac{k}{2}}$, which are constructed from simple connected grap…
The spectrum of the $k$-power hypergraph of a graph $G$ is called the $k$-ordered spectrum of $G$.If graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$ have same $k$-ordered spectrum for all positive integer $k\geq2$, $G_1$ and $G_2$ are said to be high-ordered cospectral. If all graphs who are high-ordered cospectral with the graph $G$ are isomorphic to $G$, we say that $G$ is determined by the high-ordered spectrum. In this paper, we use the high-ordered spectrum of graphs to study graph isomorphism and show that all Smith's graphs are determined by the high-ordered spectrum. And we give infinitely many pairs of trees wi…
