Motivated by the Bloch-Beilinson conjectures, we formulate a certain covariant weak Lefschetz property for Chow groups. We prove this property in some special cases, using Kimura's nilpotence theorem.
We propose two conjectures of Hard Lefschetz type on Chow groups and prove them for some special cases. For abelian varieties, we shall show they are equivalent to well-known conjectures of Beauville and Murre.
The main result of this note is a hard Lefschetz theorem for the Chow groups of generalized Kummer varieties. The same argument also proves hard Lefschetz for Chow groups of Hilbert schemes of abelian surfaces. As a consequence, we obtain new information about certain pieces of the Chow groups of generalized Kummer varieties, and Hilbert schemes of abelian surfaces. The proofs are based on work of Shen-Vial and Fu-Tian-Vial on multiplicative Chow-Künneth decompositions.
We formulate a conjectural hard Lefschetz property for Chow groups, and prove this in some special cases: roughly speaking, for varieties with finite-dimensional motive, and for varieties whose self-product has vanishing middle-dimensional Griffiths group. An appendix includes related statements that follow from results of Vial.
We propose an explicit conjectural lift of the Neron-Severi Lie algebra of a hyperkähler variety $X$ of $K3^{[2]}$-type to the Chow ring of correspondences ${\rm CH}^\ast(X \times X)$ in terms of a canonical lift of the Beauville-Bogomolov class obtained by Markman. We give evidence for this conjecture in the case of the Hilbert scheme of two points of a $K3$ surface and in the case of the Fano variety of lines of a very general cubic fourfold. Moreover, we show that the Fourier decomposition of the Chow ring of $X$ of Shen and Vial agrees with the eigenspace decomposition of a canonical lift …
Let X be the quotient of a smooth projective variety over a field by a finite group action (in which case we say X is pseudo-smooth), such that the singularities of X are isolated k-rational points. Let Y be obtained by blowing up these points on X. Assume further that Y is pseudo-smooth, and that the components of the exceptional divisor are projective spaces. Then, without invoking the theory of finite-dimensional motives or assuming any of the standard conjectures, we show that a Chow-Kunneth decomposition on either X or Y gives rise, by means of an explicit construction, to a Chow-Kunneth …
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety over a field of characteristic $0$ and $L$ an ample divisor. In this paper we study the Weak Lefschetz conjecture for Chow groups using the technique employed by Grothendieck in his study of the problem for Picard groups, and using Bloch's formula to interpret Chow groups in terms of Milnor $K$- theory we prove the infinitesimal part of the conjecture.
Let X be an abelian scheme over a base variety S with endomorphism algebra D. We prove that the relative Chow motive R(X/S) has a canonical decomposition as a direct sum of motives R^(ξ)$ where ξruns over an explicitly determined finite set of irreducible representations of the group D^{opp,*}, such that R^(ξ), seen as a functor from Chow motives to D^{\opp,*}-representations, is ξ-isotypic. Our decomposition refines the motivic decomposition of Deninger and Murre, as well as Beauville's decomposition of the Chow group. The second main result is that we construct a canonical generalized motivi…
Let $k$ be a field and let $Ω$ be a universal domain over $k$. Let $f:X \r S$ be a dominant morphism defined over $k$ from a smooth projective variety $X$ to a smooth projective variety $S$ of dimension $\leq 2$ such that the general fibre of $f_Ω$ has trivial Chow group of zero-cycles. For example, $X$ could be the total space of a two-dimensional family of varieties whose general member is rationally connected. Suppose that $X$ has dimension $\leq 4$. Then we prove that $X$ has a self-dual Murre decomposition, i.e. that $X$ has a self-dual Chow--Kuenneth decomposition which satisfies Murre's…
We introduce a homological Lefschetz conjecture on (rational) Chow groups, which can be deduced from some well known conjectures, and illustrate it by a series of key examples. We then prove the injectivity of the push-forward morphism on Chow groups, induced by the closed embedding of the Theta divisor in it's Jacobian $J(C)$. Here $C$ is a smooth irreducible complex projective curve.
Let $X$ be a complex smooth projective variety of dimension $d$. Under some assumption on the cohomology of $X$, we construct mutually orthogonal idempotents in $CH_d(X \times X) \otimes \Q$ whose action on algebraically trivial cycles coincides with the Abel-Jacobi map. Such a construction generalizes Murre's construction of the Albanese and Picard idempotents and makes it possible to give new examples of varieties admitting a self-dual Chow-Künneth decomposition satisfying the motivic Lefschetz conjecture as well as new examples of varieties having a Kimura finite dimensional Chow motive. Fo…
We study the deformations of the Chow group of zero-cycles of the special fibre of a smooth scheme over a henselian discrete valuation ring. Our main tools are Bloch's formula and differential forms. As a corollary we get an algebraization theorem for thickened zero-cycles previously obtained using idelic techniques. In the course of the proof we develop moving lemmata and Lefschetz theorems for cohomology groups with coefficients in differential forms.
We give a counterexample to the proof in the literature [K-Theory 25 (2002), 215-231] of the existence of linear representatives of higher Chow groups of number fields.
Let $S$ be a smooth projective complex algebraic surface and $f\, :\, S\, \longrightarrow\, {\mathbb C}{\mathbb P}^2$ a finite map. Consider a pencil of hyperplane sections on ${\mathbb C}{\mathbb P}^2$ and pull it back to $S$. We address the question whether such a pencil is a Lefschetz pencil on $S$.
In this paper, we investigate Murre's conjectures on the structure of rational Chow groups and exhibit explicit Chow--Kuenneth projectors for some examples. More precisely, the examples we study are the varieties which have a nef tangent bundle. For surfaces and threefolds which have a nef tangent bundle explicit Chow--Kuenneth projectors are obtained which satisfy Murre's conjectures and the motivic Hard Lefschetz theorem is verified.
In this note we relate the notions of Lefschetz type, decomposability, and isomorphism, on Chow motives with the notions of unit type, decomposability, and isomorphism, on noncommutative motives. Examples, counter-examples, and applications are also described.
We consider zeta functions with values in the Grothendieck ring of Chow motives. Investigating the lambda-structure of this ring, we deduce a functional equation for the zeta function of abelian varieties. Furthermore, we show that the property of having a rational zeta function satisfying a functional equation is preserved under products.
A theorem of Esnault, Srinivas and Viehweg asserts that if the Chow group of 0-cycles of a smooth complete complex variety decomposes, then the top-degree coherent cohomology group decomposes similarly. In this note, we prove a similar statement for Chow groups of arbitrary codimension, provided the variety satisfies the Lefschetz standard conjecture.
We prove a formula for the orbifold Chow ring of semi-projective toric DM stacks, generalizing the orbifold Chow ring formula of projective toric DM stacks by Borisov-Chen-Smith. We also consider a special kind of semi-projective toric DM stacks, the Lawrence toric DM stacks. We prove that the orbifold Chow ring of a Lawrence toric DM stack is isomorphic to the orbifold Chow ring of its associated hypertoric DM stack studied in \cite{JT}.
In this note we are going to understand two questions. One is the fiber of the natural map from a projective algebraic group $G$ to $G/Γ$, where $Γ$ denotes the $Γ$-equivalence on $G$. The other one is to define a natural map from Hilbert scheme of the generic fiber of a fibration $X\to S$ to the Chow group of relative zero cycles on $X\to S$ and to understand the fibers of this map.
Let $X$ be a complete intersection inside a variety $M$ with finite dimensional motive and for which the Lefschetz-type conjecture $B(M)$ holds. We show how conditions on the niveau filtration on the homology of $X$ influence directly the niveau on the level of Chow groups. This leads to a generalization of Voisin's result. The latter states that if $M$ has trivial Chow groups and if $X$ has non-trivial variable cohomology parametrized by $c$-dimensional algebraic cycles, then the cycle class maps $A_k(X) \to H_{2k}(X)$ are injective for $k<c$. We give variants involving group actions which le…
Let $X$ be a smooth complex projective variety with trivial Chow groups. (By trivial, we mean that the cycle class is injective.) We show (assuming the Lefschetz standard conjecture) that if the vanishing cohomology of a general complete intersection $Y$ of ample hypersurfaces in $X$ has geometric coniveau $\geq c$, then the Chow groups of cycles of dimension $\leq c-1$ of $Y$ are trivial. The generalized Bloch conjecture for $Y$ is this statement with "geometric coniveau" replaced by "Hodge coniveau".
We express the kernel of Griffiths' Abel-Jacobi map by using the inductive limit of Deligne cohomology in the generalized sense (i.e. the absolute Hodge cohomology of A. Beilinson). This generalizes a result of L. Barbieri-Viale and V. Srinivas in the surface case. We then show that the Abel-Jacobi map for codimension 2 cycles and the Albanese map are bijective if a general hyperplane section is a surface for which Bloch's conjecture is proved. In certain cases we verify Nori's conjecture on the Griffiths group. We also prove a weak Lefschetz-type theorem for (higher) Chow groups, generalize a…
In this short note, we study the asymptotic Chow polystability of toric Del Pezzo surfaces appear in the moduli space of Kähler-Einstein Fano varieties constructed in [OSS16].
A theorem of Esnault, Srinivas and Viehweg asserts that if the Chow group of 0-cycles of a smooth complete complex variety decomposes, then the top-degree coherent cohomology group decomposes similarly. In this note, we prove that (a weak version of) the converse holds for varieties of dimension at most 5 that have finite-dimensional motive and satisfy the Lefschetz standard conjecture. The proof is based on Vial's construction of a refined Chow-Kunneth decomposition for these varieties.
Let X be a smooth projective variety of dimension n on which rational and homological equivalence coincide for algebraic p-cycles in the range 0\leq p\leq s. We show that the homologically trivial sector of rational Lawson homology L_pH_k(X,Q)_{hom} vanishes for 0\leq n-p\leq s+2. This is an analogue of a theorem of C. Peters in "dual dimensions". Together with Peters' theorem we get that the natural transformation L_pH_k(X,Q)--> H_k(X,Q) is injective for all p and k when X is a smooth projective variety of dimension 4 and Ch_0(X) =Z.
We prove an unconditional (but slightly weakened) version of the main result of our earlier paper with the same title, which was, starting from dimension $4$, conditional to the Lefschetz standard conjecture. Let $X$ be a variety with trivial Chow groups, (i.e. the cycle class map to cohomology is injective on $CH(X)_\mathbb{Q}$). We prove that if the cohomology of a general very ample hypersurface $Y$ in $X$ is ``parameterized by cycles of dimension $c$'', then the Chow groups $CH_{i}(Y)_\mathbb{Q}$ are trivial for $i\leq c-1$.
In this short note, we prove a comparision theorem between Levine-Serpé's equivariant higher Chow groups of an algebraic variety equipped with an action of a finite group and ordinary higher Chow groups of its fixed points. As a consequence, we show that the equivariant motivic spectral sequence degenerates rationally. This yields a Riemann-Roch Theorem for equivariant algebraic $K$-theory.
Loi-Piergallini and Akbulut-Ozbagci showed that every compact Stein surface admits a Lefschetz fibration over the 2-disk with bounded fibers. In this note we give a more intrinsic alternative proof of this result.
This small note is about Plücker hyperplane sections $X$ of the Grassmannian $\operatorname{Gr}(3,V_{10})$. Inspired by the analogy with cubic fourfolds, we prove that the only non-trivial Chow group of $X$ is generated by Grassmannians of type $\operatorname{Gr}(3,W_{6})$ contained in $X$. We also prove that a certain subring of the Chow ring of $X$ (containing all intersections of positive-codimensional subvarieties) injects into cohomology.
This note concerns hyperkähler fourfolds $X$ having a non-symplectic involution $ι$. The Bloch-Beilinson conjectures predict the way $ι$ should act on certain pieces of the Chow groups of $X$. The main result is a verification of this prediction for Fano varieties of lines on certain cubic fourfolds. This has consequences for the Chow ring of the quotient $X/ι$.
The paper discusses four approaches to the biextension of Chow groups and their equivalences. These are the following: an explicit construction given by S.Bloch, a construction in terms of the Poincare biextension of dual intermediate Jacobians, a construction in terms of K-cohomology, and a construction in terms of determinant of cohomology of coherent sheaves. A new approach to J.Franke's Chow categories is given. An explicit formula for the Weil pairing of algebraic cycles is obtained.
In this note we prove that the kernel of the push-forward homomorphism on $d$-cycles modulo rational equivalence, induced by the closed embedding of an ample divisor linearly equivalent to some multiple of the theta divisor inside the Jacobian variety $J(C)$ is trivial. Here $C$ is a smooth projective curve of genus $g$.
This note is about the Chow ring of Verra fourfolds. For a general Verra fourfold, we show that the Chow group of homologically trivial $1$-cycles is generated by conics. We also show that Verra fourfolds admit a multiplicative Chow-Künneth decomposition, and draw some consequences for the intersection product in the Chow ring of Verra fourfolds.
We investigate Chow stability of projective bundles P(E) where E is a strictly Gieseker stable bundle over a base manifold that has constant scalar curvature. We show that, for suitable polarisations L, the pair (P(E),L) is Chow stable and give examples for which it is not asymptotically Chow stable.
This note is about the Hilbert square $X=S^{[2]}$, where $S$ is a general $K3$ surface of degree $10$, and the anti-symplectic birational involution $ι$ of $X$ constructed by O'Grady. The main result is that the action of $ι$ on certain pieces of the Chow groups of $X$ is as expected by Bloch's conjecture. Since $X$ is birational to a double EPW sextic $X^\prime$, this has consequences for the Chow ring of the EPW sextic $Y\subset{\mathbb{P}}^5$ associated to $X^\prime$.
Consider the Fano surface of a conic bundle embedded in $\mathbb P^5$. Let $i$ denote the natural involution acting on this surface. In this note we provide an obstruction to the identity action of the involution on the group of algebraically trivial zero cycles modulo rational equivalence on the surface.
It is a fundamental property of the Chow groups of algebraic schemes that they are contra-functorial with respect to flat morphisms between schemes. While the pullback homomorphism is easy to define at the level of algebraic cycles, the crucial step is to show that the pullback of cycles preserves rational equivalence, so that it descends to the Chow groups. The purpose of this note is to give a natural sheaf theoretic proof of the preservation of rational equivalence under flat pullback on cycles.
This note is about the Chow groups of a certain family of smooth cubic fourfolds. This family is characterized by the property that each cubic fourfold $X$ in the family has an involution such that the induced involution on the Fano variety $F$ of lines in $X$ is symplectic and has a $K3$ surface $S$ in the fixed locus. The main result establishes a relation between $X$ and $S$ on the level of Chow motives. As a consequence, we can prove finite-dimensionality of the motive of certain members of the family.
These notes were written to serve as an easy reference for \cite{Wang-AF}. All the results in this presentation are well-known (or quasi-well-known) theorems in Hodge theory. Our main purpose was to give a unified approach based on a variation formula of the Lefschetz star operator, following \cite{Wang-k}. It fits quite well with Timorin's $T$-Hodge theory, i.e. the Hodge theory on the space of differential forms divided by $T$ (i.e. forms like $T\wedge u$), where $T$ is a finite wedge product of Kähler forms.
Let $\Sym^m X$ denote the $m$-th symmetric power of a smooth projective curve $X$. Let $\wt{\Sym^m X}$ be the blow up of $\Sym^m X$ along some non-singular subvariety. In this note we are going to discuss when the pushforward homomorphism induced by the natural morphism from $\wt{\Sym^m X}$ to $\Sym^n X$ is injective at the level of Chow groups for $m\leq n$. Also we are going to prove that base changes of embeddings of one symmetric power into another, with respect to closed embeddings induces an injection at the level of Chow groups.
Let K be an algebraically closed field of characteristic p > 0. We apply a theorem of C. Han to give an explicit description for the weak Lefschetz property of the monomial Artinian complete intersection A = K[X,Y,Z]/(X^d,Y^d,Z^d) in terms of d and p. This answers a question of J. Migliore, R. M. Miro-Roig and U. Nagel and, equivalently, characterizes for which characteristics the rank-2 syzygy bundle Syz(X^d,Y^d,Z^d) on PP^2 satisfies the Grauert-Muelich theorem. As a corollary we obtain that for p=2 the algebra A has the weak Lefschetz property if and only if d=(2^t+1)/3 or d=(2^t-1)/3 for s…
The Beilinson-Bloch type conjectures predict that the low degree rational Chow groups of intersections of quadrics are one dimensional. This conjecture was proved by Otwinowska. Making use of homological projective duality and the recent theory of (Jacobians of) noncommutative Chow motives, we give an alternative proof of this conjecture in the case of a complete intersection of either two quadrics or three odd-dimensional quadrics. Moreover, without the use of the powerful Lefschetz theorem, we prove that in these cases the unique non-trivial algebraic Jacobian is the middle one. As an applic…
Garbagnati has constructed certain surfaces of general type that are bidouble planes as well as double covers of K3 surfaces. In this note, we study the Chow groups (and Chow motive) of these surfaces.
Traditionally, Hodge structures are associated with complex projective varieties. In my expository lectures I discussed a non-commutative generalization of Hodge structures in deformation quantization and in derived algebraic geometry.
In this note, we obtain a number of results related to the hard Lefschetz theorem for pseudoeffective line bundles, due to Demailly, Peternell and Schneider. Our first result states that the holomorphic sections produced by the theorem are in fact parallel, when viewed as currents with respect to the singular Chern connection associated with the metric. Our proof is based on a control of the covariant derivative in the approximation process used in the construction of the section. Then we show that we have an isomorphsim between such parallel sections and higher degree cohomology. As an applic…
The cosimplicial scheme $$Delta^bullet = Δ^0 smallmatrix \to smallmatrix Δ^1 smallmatrix to smallmatrix ...;\quad Δ^n :=\Spec\Big(k[t_0,...c,t_n]/(\sum t_i -t)\Big)$$ was used in B to define higher Chow groups. In this note, we let t tend to 0 and replace Δ^\bullet by a degenerate version $$Q^\bullet = Q^0 smallmatrix to smallmatrix Q^1 smallmatrix to smallmatrix ...;\quad Q^n := \Spec\Big(k[t_0,...c,t_n]/(\sum t_i)\Big) $$ to define an additive version of the higher Chow groups. For a field k, we show the Chow group of 0-cycles on $Q^n$ in this theory is isomorphic to the absolute $(n-1)$-Käh…
The aim of this note is to announce some results on the GIT problem for the Hilbert and Chow scheme of curves of degree d and genus g in P^{d-g}, whose full details will appear in a subsequent paper. In particular, we extend the previous results of L. Caporaso up to d>4(2g-2) and we observe that this is sharp. In the range 2(2g-2)<d<7/2(2g-2), we get a complete new description of the GIT quotient. As a corollary, we get a new compactification of the universal Jacobian over the moduli space of pseudo-stable curves.
The purpose of this note is to prove that the Chow motive of the Fano surface of lines on the smooth cubic threefold is finite-dimensional in the sense of Kimura. This gives an example of a smooth projective variety that is not dominated by a product of curves but whose Chow motive is of Abelian type.
In this note, we verify that the complex Kodaira dimension $κ^h$ equals the symplectic Kodaira dimension $κ^s$ for smooth 4-manifolds with complex and symplectic structures. We also calculate the Kodaira dimension for many Lefschetz fibrations.
For a curve C, viewed as a cycle in its Jacobian, we study its image n_*C under multiplication by n on JC. We prove that the subgroup generated by these cycles, in the Chow group modulo algebraic equivalence, has rank at most d-1, where d is the gonality of C. We also discuss some general facts on the action of n_* on the Chow groups.
The aim of this note is to give a simplified proof of the surjectivity of the natural Milnor-Chow homomorphism $ρ: K^M_n(A) \to CH^n(A,n)$ between Milnor $K$-theory and higher Chow groups for essentially smooth (semi-)local $k$-algebras $A$ with $k$ infinite. It implies the exactness of the Gersten resolution for Milnor $K$-theory at the generic point. Our method uses the Bloch-Levine moving technique and some properties of the Milnor $K$-theory norm for fields.
