We express the kernel of Griffiths' Abel-Jacobi map by using the inductive limit of Deligne cohomology in the generalized sense (i.e. the absolute Hodge cohomology of A. Beilinson). This generalizes a result of L. Barbieri-Viale and V. Srinivas in the surface case. We then show that the Abel-Jacobi map for codimension 2 cycles and the Albanese map are bijective if a general hyperplane section is a surface for which Bloch's conjecture is proved. In certain cases we verify Nori's conjecture on the Griffiths group. We also prove a weak Lefschetz-type theorem for (higher) Chow groups, generalize a formula for the Abel-Jacobi map of higher cycles due to Beilinson and Levine to the smooth non proper case, and give a sufficient condition for the nonvanishing of the transcendental part of the image by the Abel-Jacobi map of a higher cycle on an elliptic surface, together with some examples.
In this paper we study the integral Chow ring of toric Deligne-Mumford stacks. We prove that the integral Chow ring of a semi-projective toric Deligne-Mumford stack is isomorphic to the Stanley-Reisner ring of the associated stacky fan. The integral orbifold Chow ring is also computed. Our results are illustrated with several examples.
Generalizing toric varieties, we introduce toric Deligne-Mumford stacks which correspond to combinatorial data. The main result in this paper is an explicit calculation of the orbifold Chow ring of a toric Deligne-Mumford stack. As an application, we prove that the orbifold Chow ring of the toric Deligne-Mumford stack associated to a simplicial toric variety is a flat deformation of (but is not necessarily isomorphic to) the Chow ring of a crepant resolution.
Hypertoric varieties are determined by hyperplane arrangements. In this paper, we use stacky hyperplane arrangements to define the notion of hypertoric Deligne-Mumford stacks. Their orbifold Chow rings are computed. As an application, some examples related to crepant resolutions are discussed.
We prove a formula for the orbifold Chow ring of semi-projective toric DM stacks, generalizing the orbifold Chow ring formula of projective toric DM stacks by Borisov-Chen-Smith. We also consider a special kind of semi-projective toric DM stacks, the Lawrence toric DM stacks. We prove that the orbifold Chow ring of a Lawrence toric DM stack is isomorphic to the orbifold Chow ring of its associated hypertoric DM stack studied in \cite{JT}.
Using Bloch-Ogus theorem and Chern character from K-theory to cyclic homology, we answer a question of Green and Griffiths on extending Bloch formula. Moreover, we construct a map from local Hilbert functor to local cohomology. With suitable assumptions, we use this map to answer a question of Bloch on constructing a natural transformation from local Hilbert functor to cohomological Chow groups.
This is a supplement to the paper "Goncharov's Relations in Bloch's higher Chow Group CH^3(F,5)" submitted as math.AG/0105084. We check the admissiblility of all the cycles appearing in the main article.
In this paper we define the formal and tempered Deligne cohomology groups, that are obtained by applying the Deligne complex functor to the complexes of formal differential forms and tempered currents respectively. We then prove the existence of a duality between them, a vanishing theorem for the former and a semipurity property for the latter. The motivation of these results comes from the study of covariant arithmetic Chow groups. The semi-purity property of tempered Deligne cohomology implies, in particular, that several definitions of covariant arithmetic Chow groups agree for projective a…
Let X be a complex surface with no nontrivial 2-forms. Then we show that Bloch's conjecture is true (i.e. the Albanese map in this case is injective) if and only if any homologically trivial idempotent in the ring of correspondences vanishes. Furthermore the cube of the ideal of homologically trivial correspondences is zero if these equivalent conditions are satisfied (e.g. if X is not of general type).
Using Totaro-Bloch-Kriz's linear fractional cycles Gangl and Muller-Stach recently prove the 5-term relations for the dilogarithm in Bloch's higher Chow group CH^2(F,3) and the Kummer-Spence relations in some group G(F) over an arbitrary field F where G(F) is isomorphic to CH^3(F,5) up to torsions under the Beilinson-Soule vanishing conjecture that CH^2(F,n)=0 for n>3. In this paper we show that Goncharov's 22-term relations for the trilogarithm also hold in G(F).
We introduce extended toric Deligne-Mumford stacks. We use an extended toric Deligne-Mumford stack to get the toric stack bundle and compute its orbifold Chow ring. Finally we generalize one result of Borisov, Chen and Smith so that the orbifold Chow ring of the toric stack bundle and the Chow ring of its crepant resolution are fibres of a flat family.
Consider the Fano surface of a conic bundle embedded in $\mathbb P^5$. Let $i$ denote the natural involution acting on this surface. In this note we provide an obstruction to the identity action of the involution on the group of algebraically trivial zero cycles modulo rational equivalence on the surface.
Let X be a smooth quasi-projective variety over the algebraic closure of the rational number field. We show that the cycle map of the higher Chow group to Deligne cohomology is injective and the higher Hodge cycles are generated by the image of the cycle map as conjectured by Beilinson and Jannsen, if the cycle map to Deligne cohomology is injective and the Hodge conjecture is true for certain smooth projective varieties over the algebraic closure of the rational number field. We also verify the conjecture on the surjectivity in the case of the complement of a union of general hypersurfaces in…
The arithmetic Chow groups and their product structure are extended from the category of regular arithmetic varieties to regular Deligne-Mumford stacks over the ring of integers in a number field.
We use Burgos theory of arithmetic Chow groups to exhibit a realization of the degree zero part of the polylogarithm on abelian schemes in Deligne-Beilinson cohomology.
In this paper, we prove that the conductor formula of Bloch implies the conjecture of Deligne on Milnor numbers of isolated singularities. In particular, thanks to the work of Bloch on his conjecture, our result implies that this so-called Deligne-Milnor's conjecture is equally true in the unequal characteristic case.
We construct a map between Bloch's higher Chow groups and Deligne homology for smooth, complex quasiprojective varieties on the level of complexes. For complex projective varieties this results in a formula which generalizes at the same time the classical Griffiths Abel-Jacobi map and the Borel/Beilinson/Goncharov regulator type maps.
Based on Balmer's tensor triangular Chow group [2], we propose (Milnor)K-theoretic Chow groups of derived categories of schemes. These Milnor K-theoretic Chow groups recover the classical ones [6] for smooth projective varieties and can detect nilpotent, while the classical ones can't do. As an application, we extend Soulé's variant of Bloch-Quilled identification from smooth projective varieties to their trivial infinitesimal thickenings. This answers affirmatively a question by Green-Griffiths for trivial deformations, see Question 1.1 below.
We define and compare two different definitions of Chow motives for Deligne-Mumford stacks, associated with two definitions of Chow rings. The main result we prove is that both categories of motives are equivalent to the usual category of motives of algebraic varieties, but the motives of a given stack associated with both theories are not isomorphic. We will also give some examples of motives associated with some alegbraic stacks.
Enriques varieties have been defined as higher-dimensional generalizations of Enriques surfaces. Bloch's conjecture implies that Enriques varieties should have trivial Chow group of zero-cycles. We prove this is the case for all known examples of irreducible Enriques varieties of index larger than $2$. The proof is based on results concerning the Chow motive of generalized Kummer varieties.
We prove an Atiyah-Segal isomorphism for the higher $K$-theory of coherent sheaves on quotient Deligne-Mumford stacks over $\C$. As an application, we prove the Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem for such stacks. This theorem establishes an isomorphism between the higher $K$-theory of coherent sheaves on a Deligne-Mumford stack and the higher Chow groups of its inertia stack. Furthermore, this isomorphism is covariant for proper maps between Deligne-Mumford stacks.
In this paper we show that the regulator defined by Goncharov from higher algebraic Chow groups to Deligne-Beilinson cohomology agrees with Beilinson's regulator. We give a direct comparison of Goncharov's regulator to the construction given by Burgos and Feliu. As a consequence, we show that the higher arithmetic Chow groups defined by Goncharov agree, for all projective arithmetic varieties over an arithmetic field, with the ones defined by Burgos and Feliu.
The hypothetical existence of a good theory of mixed motives predicts many deep phenomena related to algebraic cycles. One of these, a generalization of Bloch's conjecture says that "small Hodge diamonds" go with "small Chow groups". Voisin's method (which produces examples with small Chow groups) is analyzed carefully to widen its applicability. A threefold of general type without 1- and 2-forms is exhibited for which this extension yields Bloch's generalized conjecture.
For any vector bundle $V$ on a toric Deligne-Mumford stack $\ix$ the formalism of \cite{EJK:16} defines two intertial products $\star_{V^{+}}$ and $\star_{V^{-}}$ on the Chow group of the inertia stack. We give an explicit presentation for the integral $\star_{V^+}$ and $\star_{V^-}$ Chow rings, extending earlier work of Boris-Chen-Smith \cite{BCS:05} and Jiang-Tsen \cite{JiTs:10} in the orbifold Chow ring case, which corresponds to $V = 0$. We also describe an {\em asymptotic} product on the rational Chow group of the inertia stack obtained by letting the rank of the bundle $V$ go to infinity…
Motivated by the generalized Bloch conjecture, we formulate a conjecture about the Chow groups of Plücker hypersurfaces in Grassmannians. We prove weak versions of this conjecture.
Using determinant functor, we describe a natural transformation from local Hilbert functor to K-theoretic cycle groups of codimension one, which were variants of Balmer's tensor triangular Chow groups. This enables us to answers a question of Bloch on infinitesimal deformation of Chow groups of divisors.
Let $X$ be a smooth complex projective variety with trivial Chow groups. (By trivial, we mean that the cycle class is injective.) We show (assuming the Lefschetz standard conjecture) that if the vanishing cohomology of a general complete intersection $Y$ of ample hypersurfaces in $X$ has geometric coniveau $\geq c$, then the Chow groups of cycles of dimension $\leq c-1$ of $Y$ are trivial. The generalized Bloch conjecture for $Y$ is this statement with "geometric coniveau" replaced by "Hodge coniveau".
We show how to use equidimensional algebraic correspondences between complex algebraic varieties to construct pull-backs and transforms of certain classes of geometric currents. Using this construction we produce explicit formulas at the level of complexes for a regulator map from the Higher Chow groups of smooth complex quasi-projective algebraic varieties to Deligne-Beilinson cohomology with integral coefficients. A distinct aspect of our approach is the use of Suslin's complex of equidimensional cycles over $ Δ^n $ to compute Bloch's higher Chow groups. We calculate explicit examples involv…
Motivated by the Bloch-Beilinson conjectures, we formulate a certain covariant weak Lefschetz property for Chow groups. We prove this property in some special cases, using Kimura's nilpotence theorem.
We propose a "Bloch type" conjecture for surfaces: if the cup product map in coherent cohomology is zero, then all intersections of homologically trivial divisors should be zero in the Chow group of zero-cycles. We prove this conjecture for Sicilian surfaces.
We define an `enriched' notion of Chow groups for algebraic varieties, agreeing with the conventional notion for complete varieties, but enjoying a functorial push-forward for arbitrary maps. This tool allows us to glue intersection-theoretic information across elements of a stratification of a variety; we illustrate this operation by giving a direct construction of Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes of singular varieties, providing a new proof of an old (and long since settled) conjecture of Deligne and Grothendieck.
A theorem of Esnault, Srinivas and Viehweg asserts that if the Chow group of 0-cycles of a smooth complete complex variety decomposes, then the top-degree coherent cohomology group decomposes similarly. In this note, we prove that (a weak version of) the converse holds for varieties of dimension at most 5 that have finite-dimensional motive and satisfy the Lefschetz standard conjecture. The proof is based on Vial's construction of a refined Chow-Kunneth decomposition for these varieties.
We prove an unconditional (but slightly weakened) version of the main result of our earlier paper with the same title, which was, starting from dimension $4$, conditional to the Lefschetz standard conjecture. Let $X$ be a variety with trivial Chow groups, (i.e. the cycle class map to cohomology is injective on $CH(X)_\mathbb{Q}$). We prove that if the cohomology of a general very ample hypersurface $Y$ in $X$ is ``parameterized by cycles of dimension $c$'', then the Chow groups $CH_{i}(Y)_\mathbb{Q}$ are trivial for $i\leq c-1$.
In 1986, Spencer Bloch gave an abstract definition of a (regulator) map from higher Chow groups to Deligne-Beilinson cohomology. This map can be defined on the underlying complexes, and Kerr, Lewis and Müller-Stach gave an explicit description of this map in terms of currents. Using a multiplicative version of the Deligne complex, we give a commutative version of this map.
In this note we are going to consider a smooth projective surface equipped with an involution and study the action of the involution at the level of Chow group of zero cycles.
We give a new construction of higher arithmetic Chow groups for quasi-projective arithmetic varieties over a field. Our definition agrees with the higher arithmetic Chow groups defined by Goncharov for projective arithmetic varieties over a field. These groups are the analogue, in the Arakelov context, of the higher algebraic Chow groups defined by Bloch. The degree zero group agrees with the arithmetic Chow groups of Burgos. Our new construction is shown to be a contravariant functor and is endowed with a product structure, which is commutative and associative.
This note concerns hyperkähler fourfolds $X$ having a non-symplectic involution $ι$. The Bloch-Beilinson conjectures predict the way $ι$ should act on certain pieces of the Chow groups of $X$. The main result is a verification of this prediction for Fano varieties of lines on certain cubic fourfolds. This has consequences for the Chow ring of the quotient $X/ι$.
The Chow groups of codimension-p algebraic cycles modulo rational equivalence on a smooth algebraic variety X have steadfastly resisted the efforts of algebraic geometers to fathom their structure. This book explores a "linearization" approach to this problem, focusing on the infinitesimal structure of the Chow groups near their identity elements. This method was adumbrated in recent work of Mark Green and Phillip Griffiths. Similar topics have been explored by Bloch, Stienstra, Hesselholt, Van der Kallen, and others. A famous formula of Bloch expresses the Chow groups as Zariski sheaf cohomol…
For a generalized Kummer variety X of dimension 2n, we will construct for each 0 < i < n some co-isotropic subvarieties in X foliated by i-dimensional constant cycle subvarieties. These subvarieties serve to prove that the rational orbit filtration introduced by Voisin on the Chow group of zero-cycles of a generalized Kummer variety coincides with the induced Beauville decomposition from the Chow ring of abelian varieties. As a consequence, the rational orbit filtration is opposite to the conjectural Bloch-Beilinson filtration for generalized Kummer varieties.
Consider an external product of a higher cycle and a usual cycle which is algebraically equivalent to zero. Assume there exists an algebraically closed subfield k such that the higher cycle and its ambient variety are defined over k, but the image of the usual cycle by the Abel-Jacobi map is not. Then we prove that the external product is nonzero if the image of the higher cycle by the cycle map to the reduced Deligne cohomology does not vanish. We also give examples of indecomposable higher cycles on even dimensional hypersurfaces of degree at least four in a projective space such that the la…
This note is about the Hilbert square $X=S^{[2]}$, where $S$ is a general $K3$ surface of degree $10$, and the anti-symplectic birational involution $ι$ of $X$ constructed by O'Grady. The main result is that the action of $ι$ on certain pieces of the Chow groups of $X$ is as expected by Bloch's conjecture. Since $X$ is birational to a double EPW sextic $X^\prime$, this has consequences for the Chow ring of the EPW sextic $Y\subset{\mathbb{P}}^5$ associated to $X^\prime$.
In this paper we consider Deligne-Lusztig varieties and their analogues when the Frobenius endomorphism is replaced with conjugation by an element in a group, especially a regular semisimple or regular unipotent one. We calculate their classes in the Chow group of the flag variety in terms of Schubert classes. Also we give some sufficient criteria when different elements in the Weyl group result in the same class.
We study the deformations of the Chow group of zero-cycles of the special fibre of a smooth scheme over a henselian discrete valuation ring. Our main tools are Bloch's formula and differential forms. As a corollary we get an algebraization theorem for thickened zero-cycles previously obtained using idelic techniques. In the course of the proof we develop moving lemmata and Lefschetz theorems for cohomology groups with coefficients in differential forms.
We show how the notion of the transcendence degree of a zero-cycle on a smooth projective variety X is related to the structure of the motive M(X). This can be of particular interest in the context of Bloch's conjecture, especially for Godeaux surfaces, when the surface is given as a finite quotient of a suitable quintic in P^3.
According to the Bloch-Beilinson conjectures, an automorphism of a K3 surface X that acts as the identity on the transcendental lattice should act trivially on CH^2(X). We discuss this conjecture for symplectic involutions and prove it in one third of all cases. The main point is to use special elliptic K3 surfaces and stable maps to produce covering families of elliptic curves on the generic K3 surface that are invariant under the involution.
This article is about hyperkähler fourfolds $X$ admitting a non-symplectic involution $ι$. The Bloch-Beilinson conjectures predict the way $ι$ should act on certain pieces of the Chow groups of $X$. The main result is a verification of this prediction for Fano varieties of lines on certain cubic fourfolds. This has some interesting consequences for the Chow ring of the quotient $X/ι$.
Let $X$ be a hyperkähler variety, and let $G$ be a group of finite order non-symplectic automorphisms of $X$. Beauville's conjectural splitting property predicts that each Chow group of $X$ should split in a finite number of pieces. The Bloch-Beilinson conjectures predict how $G$ should act on these pieces of the Chow groups: certain pieces should be invariant under $G$, while certain other pieces should not contain any non-trivial $G$-invariant cycle. We can prove this for two pieces of the Chow groups when $X$ is the Hilbert scheme of a $K3$ surface and $G$ consists of natural automorphisms.…
In this short note we prove that an involution on certain examples of surfaces of general type with $p_g=0$, acts as identity on the Chow group of zero cycles of the relevant surface. In particular we consider examples of such surfaces when the quotient is an Enriques surface and show that the Bloch's conjecture holds for such surfaces.
We prove a conjecture of A. Goncharov concerning strong Suslin reciprocity law. The main idea of the proof is the construction of the norm map on so-called lifted reciprocity maps. This construction is similar to the construction of the norm map on Milnor $K$-theory. As an application, we express Chow dilogarithm in terms of Bloch-Wigner dilogarithm. Also, we obtain a new reciprocity law for four rational functions on an arbitrary algebraic surface with values in the pre-Bloch group.
We prove Bloch's formula for the Chow group of 0-cycles with modulus on a smooth quasi-projective surface over a field. We use this formula to give a simple proof of the rank one case of a conjecture of Deligne and Drinfeld on lisse $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}_{\ell}$-sheaves. This was originally solved by Kerz and Saito in characteristic $\neq 2$.
The higher Chow group with modulus was introduced by Binda-Saito as a common generalization of Bloch's higher Chow group and the additive higher Chow group. In this paper, we study invariance properties of the higher Chow group with modulus. First, we formulate and prove "cube invariance," which generalizes $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopy invariance of Bloch's higher Chow group. Next, we introduce the nilpotent higher Chow group with modulus, as an analogue of the nilpotent algebraic $K$-group, and define a module structure on it over the big Witt ring of the base field. We deduce from the module stru…
The main goal of this paper is to break up motivic cohomology into smaller pieces as suggested by the conjectural Bloch-Beilinson filtrations for the Chow groups.
Let $X$ be a smooth complex cubic fourfold and let $F$ be the variety of lines of $X$. The variety $F$ is known to be a smooth projective hyperkaehler fourfold, which is moreover endowed with a self rational map $ϕ: F -\rightarrow F$ first constructed by C. Voisin. Here we define a filtration of Bloch--Beilinson type on the Chow group of zero-cycles $CH_0(F)$ which canonically splits under the action of $ϕ$, thereby answering in this case a question of A. Beauville. Moreover, we show that this filtration is of motivic origin, in the sense that it arises from a Chow--Kuenneth decomposition of t…
We relate the notion of finite dimensionality of the Chow motive M(X) of a smooth projective variety X (as defined by S. Kimura) with the Conjectures of Beilinson, Bloch and Murre on the existence of a filtration on the Chow ring CH(X). We show (Theorem 14) that finite dimensionality of M(X) implies uniqueness, up to isomorphism, of Murre's decomposition of M(X). Conversely (Theorem 17), Murre's Conjecture for a suitable m-fold product of X by itself implies finite dimensionality of M(X). We also show (Theorem 27) that, for a surface X with trivial geometrical genus, the motive M(X) is finite …
Let X be a separated scheme of finite type over a field k and D a non-reduced effective Cartier divisor on it. We attach to the pair (X, D) a cycle complex with modulus, whose homotopy groups - called higher Chow groups with modulus - generalize additive higher Chow groups of Bloch-Esnault, Rülling, Park and Krishna-Levine, and that sheafified on $X_{Zar}$ gives a candidate definition for a relative motivic complex of the pair, that we compute in weight 1. When X is smooth over k and D is such that $D_{red}$ is a normal crossing divisor, we construct a fundamental class in the cohomology of re…
