It is a fundamental property of the Chow groups of algebraic schemes that they are contra-functorial with respect to flat morphisms between schemes. While the pullback homomorphism is easy to define at the level of algebraic cycles, the crucial step is to show that the pullback of cycles preserves rational equivalence, so that it descends to the Chow groups. The purpose of this note is to give a natural sheaf theoretic proof of the preservation of rational equivalence under flat pullback on cycles.
Motivated by the study of rationally connected fibrations (and the MRC quotient) we study different notions of birationally simple fibrations. We say a fibration of smooth projective varieties is Chow constant if pushforward induces an isomorphism on the Chow group of 0-cycles. Likewise we say a fibration is cohomologically constant if pullback induces an isomorphism on holomorphic p-forms for all p. Our main result is the construction of maximal Chow constant and cohomologically constant fibrations. The paper is largely self contained and we prove a number of basic properties of these fibrati…
Let X be a smooth projective variety. Starting with a finite set of cycles on powers X^m of X, we consider the Q-vector subspaces of the Q-linear Chow groups of the X^m obtained by iterating the algebraic operations and pullback and push forward along those morphisms X^l -> X^m for which each component X^l -> X is a projection. It is shown that these Q-vector subspaces are all finite-dimensional, provided that the Q-linear Chow motive of X is a direct summand of that of an abelian variety.
Let X be a smooth projective variety of dimension n. If $p+q=n+1$ then Bloch has defined a ${\bf G}_m$-biextension E over the product of the Chow groups $CH^p_0(X)$ and $CH^q_0(X)$ of homologically trivial cycles. We prove that E is the pullback of the Poincare biextension over the product of intermediate Jacobians in characteristic zero. This is used to study various equivalence relations for algebraic cycles. In particular we reprove Murres result that Griffiths conjecture holds for codimension two cycles, i.e. every codim. two cycle algebraically and incidence equivalent to zero has torsion…
We describe a refined Chow theory for log schemes extending the theory of b-Chow suggested Holmes Pixton and Schmidt based off of a definition of Shokurov. This produces a dimension graded family of Abelian groups supporting a push-forward and pull-back along proper and log flat morphisms respectively, together with a bivariant theory satisfying Poincare Duality. In the final section we relate this construction to the construction of the log normal cone by Leo Herr.
Let $f : X \rightarrow B$ be a proper flat dominant morphism between two smooth quasi-projective complex varieties $X$ and $B$. Assume that there exists an integer $l$ such that all closed fibres $X_b$ of $f$ satisfy $CH_j(X_b) = \Q$ for all $j \leq l$. Then we prove an analogue of the projective bundle formula for $CH_i(X)$ for $i \leq l$. When $B$ is a surface, $X$ is projective and $l = \lfloor \frac{\dim X - 3}{2} \rfloor$, this makes it possible to construct a Chow-Künneth decomposition for $X$ that satisfies Murre's conjectures. For instance we prove Murre's conjectures for complex smoot…
We present a relation between the classical Chow group of relative $0$-cycles on a regular scheme $\mathcal{X}$, projective and flat over an excellent Henselian discrete valuation ring, and the Levine-Weibel Chow group of 0-cycles on the special fiber. We show that these two Chow groups are isomorphic with finite coefficients under extra assumptions. This generalizes a result of Esnault, Kerz and Wittenberg.
The classical cycle class map for a smooth complex variety sends cycles in the Chow ring to cycles in the singular cohomology ring. We study two cycle class maps for smooth real varieties: the map from the I-cohomology ring to singular cohomology induced by the signature, and a new cycle class map defined on the Chow-Witt ring. For both maps, we establish basic compatibility results like compatibility with pullbacks, pushforwards and cup products. As a first application of these general results, we show that both cycle class maps are isomorphisms for cellular varieties.
We show that under some assumptions on the monodromy group some combinations of higher Chern classes of flat vector bundles are torsion in the Chow group. Similar results hold for flat vector bundles that deform to such flat vector bundles (also in case of quasi-projective varieties). The results are motivated by Bloch's conjecture on Chern classes of flat vector bundles on smooth complex projective varities but in some cases they give a more precise information. We also study Higgs version of Bloch's conjecture and analogous problems in the positive characteristic case.
We consider the moduli space $\mathscr{N}$ of stable vector bundles of degree $0$ over a compact Riemann surface and the affine bundle $\mathscr{A}\to\mathscr{N}$ of flat connections. Following the similarity between the Teichmüller spaces and the moduli of bundles, we introduce the analogue of of the quasi-Fuchsian projective connections - local holomorphic sections of $\mathscr{A}$ - that allow to pull back the Liouville symplectic form on $T^{*}\mathscr{N}$ to $\mathscr{A}$. We prove that the pullback of the Goldman form to $\mathscr{A}$ by the Riemann-Hilbert correspondence coincides with …
Let $f : X -> B$ be a projective surjective morphism between quasi-projective varieties. The goal of this paper is the study of the Chow groups of $X$ in terms of the Chow groups of $B$ and of the fibers of $f$. One of the applications concerns quadric bundles. When $X$ and $B$ are smooth projective and when $f$ is a flat quadric fibration, we show that the motive of $X$ is "built" from the motives of varieties of dimension less than the dimension of $B$.
We propose an algebraic Riemann-Roch formula for moving flat bundles on contant families in characteristic zero with values in the ring of algebraic differential characters. This formula lifts Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch formula in the Chow groups and Bismut-Lott formula in the odd dimensional Betti cohomology with $\C/\Z$ coefficients over the field of complex numbers.
An asymptotic formula for the Tian-Paul CM-line of a flat family blown-up at a flat closed sub-scheme is given. As an application we prove that the blow-up of a polarized manifold along a (relatively) Chow-unstable submanifold admits no (extremal) constant scalar curvature Kahler metrics in classes making the exceptional divisors sufficiently small. Moreover a geometric characterization of relatively Chow-unstable configuration of points in the projective space is given. From this we get new examples of classes admitting no extremal Kahler metric also in the case of the projective plane blown-…
We study singular real-analytic Levi-flat hypersurfaces in complex projective space. We define the rank of an algebraic Levi-flat hypersurface and study the connections between rank, degree, and the type and size of the singularity. In particular, we study degenerate singularities of algebraic Levi-flat hypersurfaces. We then give necessary and sufficient conditions for a Levi-flat hypersurface to be a pullback of a real-analytic curve in $\mathbb{C}$ via a meromorphic function. Among other examples, we construct a nonalgebraic semianalytic Levi-flat hypersurface with compact leaves that is a …
We recall P. Balmer's definition of tensor triangular Chow group for a tensor triangulated category $\mathcal{K}$ and explore some of its properties. We give a proof that for a suitably nice scheme $X$ it recovers the usual notion of Chow group from algebraic geometry when we put $\mathcal{K} = \mathrm{D^{perf}}(X)$. Furthermore, we identify a class of functors for which tensor triangular Chow groups behave functorially and show that (for suitably nice schemes) proper push-forward and flat pull-back of algebraic cycles can be interpreted as being induced by the derived inverse and direct image…
Let $X$ be a surface with geometric genus and irregularity zero which is defined over a number field $K$. Let $\mathscr{X}$ denote a smooth spread of $X$ over the spectrum of a Zariski open subset in the spectrum of the ring of integers and $A^2$ stands for the group of algebraically trivial cycles on schemes modulo rational equivalence. If $j^*: A^2(\mathscr{X})\to A^2(X)$ be the flat pull-back corresponding to the embedding $j:X\hookrightarrow \mathscr{X}$ then we prove that $\im(j^*)(K)/A^2(\mathscr{X})(K)$ is a torsion group. Here $\im(j^*)(K)$, $A^2(\mathscr{X})(K)$ stand for the cycles f…
We study truncated point schemes of connected graded algebras as families over the parameter space of varying relations for the algebras, proving that the families are flat over the open dense locus where the point schemes achieve the expected (i.e. minimal) dimension. When the truncated point scheme is zero-dimensional we obtain its number of points counted with multiplicity via a Chow ring computation. This latter application in particular confirms a conjecture of Brazfield to the effect that a generic two-generator, two-relator 4-dimensional Artin-Schelter regular algebra has seventeen trun…
In this article, we define the l-adic homology for a morphism of schemes satisfying certain finiteness conditions. This homology has these functors similar to the Chow groups: proper push-forward, flat pull-back, base change, cap-product, etc. In particular on singular varieties, this kind of l-adic homology behaves much better that the classical l-adic cohomology. As an application, we give an much easier approach to construct the cycle maps for arbitrary algebraic schemes over fields of finite cohomology dimension. And we prove these cycle maps kill the algebraic equivalences and commute wit…
We show that every scheme/algebraic space/stack that is quasi-compact with quasi-finite diagonal can be approximated by a noetherian scheme/algebraic space/stack. More generally, we show that any stack which is etale-locally a global quotient stack can be approximated. Examples of applications are generalizations of Chevalley's, Serre's and Zariski's theorems and Chow's lemma to the non-noetherian setting. We also show that every quasi-compact algebraic stack with quasi-finite diagonal has a finite generically flat cover by a scheme.
Let $H \subset {\mathbb P}^n$ be a real-analytic subvariety of codimension one induced by a real-analytic curve in the Grassmannian $G(n+1,n)$. Assuming $H$ has a global defining function, we prove $H$ is Levi-flat, the closure of its smooth points of top dimension is a union of complex hyperplanes, and its singular set is either of dimension $2n-2$ or dimension $2n-4$. If the singular set is of dimension $2n-4$, then we show the hypersurface is algebraic and the Levi-foliation extends to a singular holomorphic foliation of ${\mathbb P}^n$ with a meromorphic (rational of degree 1) first integr…
