Let X be a smooth projective variety. Starting with a finite set of cycles on powers X^m of X, we consider the Q-vector subspaces of the Q-linear Chow groups of the X^m obtained by iterating the algebraic operations and pullback and push forward along those morphisms X^l -> X^m for which each component X^l -> X is a projection. It is shown that these Q-vector subspaces are all finite-dimensional, provided that the Q-linear Chow motive of X is a direct summand of that of an abelian variety.
We show that the algebraic local fundamental group of any klt singularity as well as the algebraic fundamental group of the smooth locus of any log Fano variety are finite.
We prove that under a certain mild hypothesis, the DG category of D-modules on a quasi-compact algebraic stack is compactly generated. We also show that under the same hypothesis, the functor of global sections on the DG category of quasi-coherent sheaves is continuous.
In this paper we introduce the notion of Blow-semialgebraic triviality consistent with a compatible filtration for an algebraic family of algebraic sets, as an equisingularity for real algebraic singularities. Given an algebraic family of 3-dimensional algebraic sets defined over a nonsingular algebraic variety, we show that there is a finite subdivision of the parameter algebraic set into connected Nash manifolds over which the family admits a Blow-semialgebraic trivialisation consistent with a compatible filtration. We show a similar result on finiteness also for a Nash family of 3-dimension…
We prove some finiteness theorems for the Picard functor of an algebraic stack, in the spirit of SGA 6, exp. XII and XIII. In particular, we give a stacky version of Raynaud's relative representability theorem, we give sufficient conditions for the existence of the torsion component of the Picard functor, and for the finite generation of the Neron-Severi groups or of the Picard group itself. We give some examples and applications. In an appendix, we prove the semicontinuity theorem for a (non necessarily tame) algebraic stack.
In this note we prove that every finite collection of connected algebraic subgroups of the group of triangular automorphisms of the affine space generates a connected solvable algebraic subgroup.
We obtain finiteness theorems for algebraic cycles of small codimension on quadric fibrations X over curves over perfect fields k. For example, if k is finitely generated over Q and the fibration has odd relative dimension at least 11, then CH^{i}(X) is finitely generated for i<=4.
We show that for n $\ge$ 2 the space of closed n-cycles in a strongly (n -- 2)-concave complex space has a natural structure of reduced complex space locally of finite dimension and represents the functor "analytic family of n-cycles" parametrized by Banach analytic sets.
In this paper we prove a finiteness result concerning the Chow group of zero-cycles for varieties over $p$-adic local fields. In this final version, there are several corrections concerning mathematical symbols and reference to related known results.
In this paper, we present a characterization for the Hausdorff distance between two given algebraic curves in the $n$-dimensional space (parametrically or implicitly defined) to be finite. The characterization is related with the asymptotic behavior of the two curves and it can be easily checked. More precisely, the Hausdorff distance between two curves $\cal C$ and $\overline{\cal C}$ is finite if and only if for each infinity branch of $\cal C$ there exists an infinity branch of $\overline{\cal C}$ such that the terms with positive exponent in the corresponding series are the same, and recip…
We formulate and analyze several finiteness conjectures for linear algebraic groups over higher-dimensional fields. In fact, we prove all of these conjectures for algebraic tori as well as in some other situations. This work relies in an essential way on several finiteness results for unramified cohomology.
We construct an explicit filtration of the ring of algebraic power series by finite dimensional constructible sets, measuring the complexity of these series. As an application, we give a bound on the dimension of the set of algebraic power series of bounded complexity lying on an algebraic variety defined over the field of power series.
This is a survey article on some recent developments in the arithmetic theory of linear algebraic groups over higher-dimensional fields, written for the Notices of the AMS.
We give a simplified and more algebraic proof of the finiteness of the families of Calabi-Yau n-folds with non-vanishing of Yukawa-coupling over a fixed base curve and with fixed degeneration locus. We also give a generalization of this result. Our method is variation of Hodge structure and poly-stability of Higgs bundles.
In this paper we present new proofs using real spectra of the finiteness theorem on Nash trivial simultaneous resolution and the finiteness theorem on Blow-Nash triviality for isolated real algebraic singularities. That is, we prove that a family of Nash sets in a Nash manifold indexed by a semialgebraic set always admits a Nash trivial simultaneous resolution after a partition of the parameter space into finitely many semialgebraic pieces and in the case of isolated singularities it admits a finite Blow-Nash trivialization. We also complement the finiteness results with recursive bounds.
We prove a finiteness theorem and a comparison theorem in the theory of étale cohomology of rigid analytic varieties. By a result of Huber, for a quasi-compact separated morphism of rigid analytic varieties with target being of dimension $\le1$, the compactly supported higher direct image preserves quasi-constructibility. Though the analogous statement for morphisms with higher dimensional target fails in general, we prove that, in the algebraizable case, it holds after replacing the target with a modification. We deduce it from a known finiteness result in the theory of nearby cycles over gen…
Let $G$ be a group and let $V$ be an algebraic group over an algebraically closed field. We introduce algebraic group subshifts $Σ\subset V^G$ which generalize both the class of algebraic sofic subshifts of $V^G$ and the class of closed group subshifts over finite group alphabets. When $G$ is a polycyclic-by-finite group, we show that $V^G$ satisfies the descending chain condition and that the notion of algebraic group subshifts, the notion of algebraic group sofic subshifts, and that of algebraic group subshifts of finite type are all equivalent. Thus, we obtain extensions of well-known resul…
On a complex symplectic manifold we prove a finiteness result for the global sections of solutions of holonomic DQ-modules in two cases: (a) by assuming that there exists a Poisson compactification (b) in the algebraic case. This extends our previous results in which the symplectic manifold was compact. The main tool is a finiteness theorem for R-constructible sheaves on a real analytic manifold in a non proper situation.
Over an algebraically closed field, various finiteness results are known regarding the automorphism group of a K3 surface and the action of the automorphisms on the Picard lattice. We formulate and prove versions of these results over arbitrary base fields, and give examples illustrating how behaviour can differ from the algebraically closed case.

We establish several finiteness properties of groups defined by algebraic difference equations. One of our main results is that a subgroup of the general linear group defined by possibly infinitely many algebraic difference equations in the matrix entries can indeed be defined by finitely many such equations. As an application, we show that the difference ideal of all difference algebraic relations among the solutions of a linear differential equation is finitely generated.
We prove that the genus of a finite-dimensional division algebra is finite whenever the center is a finitely generated field of any characteristic. We also discuss potential applications of our method to other problems, including the finiteness of the genus of simple algebraic groups of type $\textsf{G}_2$. These applications involve the double cosets of adele groups of algebraic groups over arbitrary finitely generated fields: while over number fields these double cosets are associated with the class numbers of algebraic groups and hence have been actively analyzed, similar question over more…
We study abelian varieties and K3 surfaces with complex multiplication defined over number fields of fixed degree. We show that these varieties fall into finitely many isomorphism classes over an algebraic closure of the field of rational numbers. As an application we confirm finiteness conjectures of Shafarevich and Coleman in the CM case. In addition we prove the uniform boundedness of the Galois invariant subgroup of the geometric Brauer group for forms of a smooth projective variety satisfying the integral Mumford--Tate conjecture. When applied to K3 surfaces, this affirms a conjecture of …
Hrushovski's generalization and application of [Jouanolou, "Hypersurfaces solutions d'une équation de Pfaff analytique", Mathematische Annalen, 232 (3):239--245, 1978] is here refined and extended to the partial differential setting with possibly nonconstant coefficient fields. In particular, it is shown that if $X$ is a differential-algebraic variety over a partial differential field F that is finitely generated over its constant field F_0, then there exists a dominant differential-rational map from X to the constant points of an algebraic variety V over F_0, such that all but finitely many c…
Given a finite field k of characteristic at least 5, we show that the Tate conjecture holds for K3 surfaces defined over the algebraic closure of k if and only if there are only finitely many K3 surfaces over each finite extension of k.
We construct an infinitesimal invariant for cycles in a family with cohomology class in the total space lying in a given level of the Leray filtration. This infinitesimal invariant detects cycles modulo algebraic equivalence in the fibers. We apply this construction to the Ikeda family, which gives optimal results for the Beauville decomposition of the 1-cycle of a very general plane curve in its Jacobian.
For families of smooth complex projective varieties we show that normal functions arising from algebraically trivial cycle classes are algebraic, and defined over the field of definition of the family. In particular, the zero loci of those functions are algebraic and defined over such a field of definition. This proves a conjecture of Charles.
We show that Colliot-Thélène's conjecture on 0-cycles of degree 1 implies finiteness for the u-invariant of the function field of a curve over a totally imaginary number field and period-index bounds for the Brauer groups of arbitrary fields of transcendence degree 1 over the rational numbers.
It is shown that to every Q-linear cycle \barαmodulo numerical equivalence on an abelian variety A there is canonically associated a Q-linear cycle αmodulo rational equivalence on A lying above \barα. The assignment \barα-> αrespects the algebraic operations and pullback and push forward along homomorphisms of abelian varieties.
Following an idea of Totaro, we prove that the classical integral cycle class map from algebraic cycles to étale cohomology factors through a quotient of $\ell$-adic étale cobordism over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic. This shows that there is a strong topological obstruction for cohomology classes to be algebraic and that examples of Atiyah, Hirzebruch and Totaro also work in positive characteristic.
We characterize universally generalizing morphisms which satisfy descent of algebraic cycles integrally as those universally generalizing morphisms which are surjective with generically reduced fibres. In doing so, we introduce a naive pull-back of cycles for arbitrary morphisms between noetherian schemes, which generalizes the classical pull-back for flat morphisms, and then prove basic properties of this naive pull-back.
We study a formal deformation problem for rational algebraic cycle classes motivated by Grothendieck's variational Hodge conjecture. We argue that there is a close connection between the existence of a Chow-Künneth decomposition and the existence of expected deformations of cycles. This observation applies in particular to abelian schemes.
In this note we are going to consider a smooth projective surface equipped with an involution and study the action of the involution at the level of Chow group of zero cycles.
For every even number $n$, and every $n$-dimensional smooth hypersurface of $\mathbb{P}^{n+1}$ of degree $d$, we compute the periods of all its $\frac{n}{2}$-dimensional complete intersection algebraic cycles. Furthermore, we determine the image of the given algebraic cycle under the cycle class map inside the De Rham cohomology group of the corresponding hypersurface in terms of its Griffiths basis and the polarization. As an application, we use this information to address variational Hodge conjecture for a non complete intersection algebraic cycle. We prove that the locus of general hypersur…
In this article, we define the l-adic homology for a morphism of schemes satisfying certain finiteness conditions. This homology has these functors similar to the Chow groups: proper push-forward, flat pull-back, base change, cap-product, etc. In particular on singular varieties, this kind of l-adic homology behaves much better that the classical l-adic cohomology. As an application, we give an much easier approach to construct the cycle maps for arbitrary algebraic schemes over fields of finite cohomology dimension. And we prove these cycle maps kill the algebraic equivalences and commute wit…
Voevodsky has conjectured that numerical equivalence and smash-equivalence coincide for algebraic cycles on any smooth projective variety. Building on work of Vial and Kahn-Sebastian, we give some new examples of varieties where Voevodsky's conjecture is verified.
We develop some methods for studying the Fourier-Mukai partners of an algebraic variety. As applications we prove that abelian varieties have finitely many Fourier-Mukai partners and that they are uniquely determined by their derived category of coherent $D$-modules. We also generalize a famous theorem due to A. Bondal and D. Orlov.
Using fundamental results of Deligne, we prove a nilpotence theorem for algebraic cycles and use this to prove a torsion nilpotence result for correspondences on surfaces.
We study families of faces for convex semi-algebraic sets via the normal cycle which is a semi-algebraic set similar to the conormal variety in projective duality theory. We propose a convex algebraic notion of a "patch" -- a term recently coined by Ciripoi, Kaihnsa, Löhne, and Sturmfels as a tool for approximating the convex hull of a semi-algebraic set. We discuss geometric consequences, both for the semi-algebraic and convex geometry of the families of faces, as well as variations of our definition and their consequences.
We give a theorem of Leray-Hirsch type for Chow groups and use it to study the Hogde and Grothendieck's standard conjectures for algebraic fiber bundles of Leray-Hirsch type. Morevoer, the Hodge conjecture for product varieties will also be considered.
We prove that the cohomology groups of an etale Q_p-local system on a smooth proper rigid analytic space are finite-dimensional Q_p-vector spaces, provided that the base field is either a finite extension of Q_p or an algebraically closed nonarchimedean field containing Q_p. This result manifests as a special case of a more general finiteness result for the higher direct images of a relative (phi, Gamma)-module along a smooth proper morphism of rigid analytic spaces over a mixed-characterstic nonarchimedean field.
This article proposes a generalization of tautological rings introduced by Beauville and Moonen for Jacobians. The main result is that, under certain hypotheses, the special subvarieties of Prym varieties are algebraically equivalent and their classes belong to the tautological ring.
We study the p-adic deformation properties of algebraic cycle classes modulo rational equivalence. We show that the crystalline Chern character of a vector bundle lies in a certain part of the Hodge filtration if and only if, rationally, the class of the vector bundle lifts to a formal pro-class in K-theory on the p-adic scheme.
This note is about an old conjecture of Voisin, which concerns zero--cycles on the self-product of surfaces of geometric genus one. We prove this conjecture for surfaces with $p_g=1$ and $q=2$.
