In this note we prove that every finite collection of connected algebraic subgroups of the group of triangular automorphisms of the affine space generates a connected solvable algebraic subgroup.
One central problem in real algebraic geometry is to classify the real structures of a given complex manifold. We address this problem for compact hyperkähler manifolds by showing that any such manifold admits only finitely many real structures up to equivalence. We actually prove more generally that there are only finitely many, up to conjugacy, faithful finite group actions by holomorphic or anti-holomorphic automorphisms (the so-called Klein actions). In other words, the automorphism group and the Klein automorphism group of a compact hyperkähler manifold contain only finitely many conjugac…
We study criteria for deciding when the normal subgroup generated by a single polynomial automorphism of $\mathbb{A}^n$ is as large as possible, namely equal to the normal closure of the special linear group in the special automorphism group. In particular, we investigate $m$-triangular automorphisms, i.e. those that can be expressed as a product of affine automorphisms and $m$ triangular automorphisms. Over a field of characteristic zero, we show that every nontrivial $4$-triangular special automorphism generates the entire normal closure of the special linear group in the special tame subgro…

Over an algebraically closed field, various finiteness results are known regarding the automorphism group of a K3 surface and the action of the automorphisms on the Picard lattice. We formulate and prove versions of these results over arbitrary base fields, and give examples illustrating how behaviour can differ from the algebraically closed case.
We study the possible dynamical degrees of automorphisms of the affine space $\mathbb{A}^n$. In dimension $n=3$, we determine all dynamical degrees arising from the composition of an affine automorphism with a triangular one. This generalises the easier case of shift-like automorphisms which can be studied in any dimension. We also prove that each weak Perron number is the dynamical degree of an affine-triangular automorphism of the affine space $\mathbb{A}^n$ for some $n$, and we give the best possible $n$ for quadratic integers, which is either $3$ or $4$.
A polynomial automorphism of $\mathbb{A}^n$ over a field of characteristic zero is called co-tame if, together with the affine subgroup, it generates the entire tame subgroup. We prove some new classes of automorphisms, including $3$-triangular automorphisms, are co-tame. Of particular interest, if $n=3$, we show that the statement "Every $m$-triangular automorphism is either affine or co-tame" is true if and only if $m \leq 3$; this improves upon positive results of Bodnarchuk (for $m \leq 2$, in any dimension $n$) and negative results of the authors (for $m \geq 6$, $n=3$). The main technica…
We prove that the subgroup of triangular automorphisms of the complex affine $n$-space is maximal among all solvable subgroups of $\mathrm{Aut}(\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{C}}^n)$ for every $n$. In particular, it is a Borel subgroup of $\mathrm{Aut}(\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{C}}^n)$, when the latter is viewed as an ind-group. In dimension two, we prove that the triangular subgroup is a maximal closed subgroup. Nevertheless, it is not maximal among all subgroups of $\mathrm{Aut}(\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{C}}^2)$. Given an automorphism $f$ of $\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{C}}^2$, we study the question whether the group gene…
Motivated by the finiteness of the set of automorphisms Aut(X) of a projective manifold X, and by Kobayashi-Ochiai's conjecture that a projective manifold dim(X)-analytically hyperbolic (also known as strongly measure hyperbolic) should be of general type, we investigate the finiteness properties of Aut(X) for a complex manifold satisfying a (pseudo-) intermediate hyperbolicity property. We first show that a complex manifold X which is (dim(X) -- 1)-analytically hyperbolic has indeed finite automorphisms group. We then obtain a similar statement for a pseudo-(dim(X) -- 1)-analytically hyperbol…
We prove that the closure (for the Zariski topology) of the set of polynomial automorphisms of the complex affine plane whose polydegree is (cd-1,b,a) contains all triangular automorphisms of degree cd+a, where a,b >1 and c>0 are integers and d=ab-1. When b=2, this result gives a family of counterexamples to a conjecture of Furter.
We show that if the automorphism group of a projective variety is torsion, then it is finite. Motivated by Lang's conjecture on rational points of hyperbolic varieties, we use this to prove that a projective variety with only finitely many rational points has only finitely many automorphisms. Moreover, we investigate to what extent finiteness of $S$-integral points on a variety over a number field persists over finitely generated fields. To this end, we introduce the class of mildly bounded varieties and prove a general criterion for proving this persistence.
The present paper deals with permutations induced by tame automorphisms over finite fields. The first main result is a formula for determining the sign of the permutation induced by a given elementary automorphism over a finite field. The second main result is a formula for determining the sign of the permutation induced by a given affine automorphism over a finite field. We also give a combining method of the above two formulae to determine the sign of the permutation induced by a given triangular automorphism over a finite field. As a result, for a given tame automorphism over a finite field…
This paper came to existence out of the desire to understand iterations of strictly triangular polynomial maps over finite fields. This resulted in two connected results: First, we give a generalization of $\F_p$-actions on $\F_p^n$ and their description by "locally iterative higher derivations", namely $\Z$-actions on $\F_p^n$ and show how to describe them by what we call "$\Z$-flows". We prove equivalence between locally finite polynomial automorphisms (LFPEs) over finite fields and $\Z$-flows over finite fields. We elaborate on $\Z$-flows of strictly triangular polynomial maps. Second, we d…
We show that if $ϕ: X \to X$ is an automorphism of a smooth projective variety and $D \subset X$ is an irreducible divisor for which the set of $d$ in $D$ with $ϕ^n(d)$ in $D$ for some nonzero $n$ is not Zariski dense, then $(X, ϕ)$ admits an equivariant rational fibration to a curve. As a consequence, we show that certain blowups (e.g. blowups in high codimension) do not alter the finiteness of $\textrm{Aut}(X)$, extending results of Bayraktar-Cantat. We also generalize results of Arnol'd on the growth of multiplicities of the intersection of a variety with the iterates of some other variety …
We consider polynomial maps described by so-called "(multivariate) linearized polynomials". These polynomials are defined using a fixed prime power, say q. Linearized polynomials have no mixed terms. Considering invertible polynomial maps without mixed terms over a characteristic zero field, we will only obtain (up to a linear transformation of the variables) triangular maps, which are the most basic examples of polynomial automorphisms. However, over the finite field F_q automorphisms defined by linearized polynomials have (in general) an entirely different structure. Namely, we will show tha…
We extend Lang's conjectures to the setting of intermediate hyperbolicity and prove two new results motivated by these conjectures. More precisely, we first extend the notion of algebraic hyperbolicity (originally introduced by Demailly) to the setting of intermediate hyperbolicity and show that this property holds if the appropriate exterior power of the cotangent bundle is ample. Then, we prove that this intermediate algebraic hyperbolicity implies the finiteness of the group of birational automorphisms and of the set of surjective maps from a given projective variety. Our work answers the a…
