We study criteria for deciding when the normal subgroup generated by a single polynomial automorphism of $\mathbb{A}^n$ is as large as possible, namely equal to the normal closure of the special linear group in the special automorphism group. In particular, we investigate $m$-triangular automorphisms, i.e. those that can be expressed as a product of affine automorphisms and $m$ triangular automorphisms. Over a field of characteristic zero, we show that every nontrivial $4$-triangular special automorphism generates the entire normal closure of the special linear group in the special tame subgroup, for any dimension $n \geq 2$. This generalizes a result of Furter and Lamy in dimension 2.
We call a group $G$ nilpotently Jordan of class at most $c$ $(c\in\mathbb{N})$ if there exists a constant $J\in\mathbb{Z}^+$ such that every finite subgroup $H\leqq G$ contains a nilpotent subgroup $K\leqq H$ of class at most $c$ and index at most $J$. We show that the birational automorphism group of a $d$ dimensional variety over a field of characteristic zero is nilpotently Jordan of class at most $d$.

We give a complete classification of finite subgroups of automorphisms of K3 surfaces up to deformation. The classification is in terms of Hodge theoretic data associated to certain conjugacy classes of finite subgroups of the orthogonal group of the K3 lattice. The moduli theory of K3 surfaces, in particular the surjectivity of the period map and the strong Torelli theorem allow us to interpret this datum geometrically. Our approach is computer aided and involves hermitian lattices over number fields.
Let X be an irreducible symplectic manifold and L a nef line bundle on X which is isotropic with respect to the Beauville-Bogomolov quadratic form. It is known that a subgroup Aut(X,L) of an automorphism group of X which fix L is almost abelian. We give a formula of the rank of Aut(X,L) in terms of MBM divisors. We also prove that the nef cone of X cut out MBM classes, which is a generalization of Kovac's structure theorem of nef cones of K3 surfaces
In this note we prove that every finite collection of connected algebraic subgroups of the group of triangular automorphisms of the affine space generates a connected solvable algebraic subgroup.
In the paper, we first study the subgroup of $ K$-automorphisms of $K[x_1,\allowbreak \ldots,x_n]$ which commutes with a simple derivation of $K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$. We show that the subgroup of $ K$-automorphisms of $K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ which commutes with a simple derivation of $K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ consists of translations under certain hypothesis. We also prove that the subgroup of $K$-automorphisms of $K[x_1,x_2]$ which commutes with a simple derivation is trivial under the same hypothesis, and the subgroup of $ K$-automorphisms of $K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ which commutes with simple Shamsuddin deriv…
In this paper, we discuss subgroups of the automorphism group of the polynomial ring in n variables over a field of characteristic zero. An automorphism F is said to be co-tame if the subgroup generated by F and affine automorphisms contains the tame subgroup. In 2017, Edo-Lewis gave a sufficient condition for co-tameness of automorphisms. Let EL(n) be the set of all automorphisms satisfying Edo-Lewis's condition. Then, for a certain topology on the automorphism group of the polynomial ring, any element of the closure of EL(n) is co-tame. Moreover, all the co-tame automorphisms previously know…
We give conceptual proofs of some results on the automorphism group of an Enriques surface X, for which only computational proofs have been available. Namely, there is an obvious upper bound on the image of Aut(X) in the isometry group of X's numerical lattice, and we establish a lower bound for the image that is quite close to this upper bound. These results apply over any algebraically closed field, provided that X lacks nodal curves, or that all its nodal curves are (numerically) congruent to each other mod 2. In this generality these results were originally proven by Looijenga and Cossec-D…
We study finite $p$-subgroups of birational automorphism groups. By virtue of boundedness theorem of Fano varieties, we prove that there exists a constant $R(n)$ such that a rationally connected variety of dimension $n$ over an algebraically closed field is rational if its birational automorphism group contains a $p$-subgroups of maximal rank for $p > R(n)$. Some related applications on Jordan property are discussed.
We show that every reductive subgroup of the automorphism group of a quasi-smooth well formed weighted complete intersection is a restriction of a subgroup in the automorphism group in the ambient weighted projective space. Also, we provide examples demonstrating that an automorphism group of a quasi-smooth well formed Fano weighted complete intersection may be infinite and even non-reductive.
We consider 3-subgroups in groups of birational automorphisms of rationally connected threefolds and show that any 3-subgroup can be generated by at most five elements. Moreover, we study groups of regular automorphisms of terminal Fano threefolds and prove that in all cases which are not among several explicitly described exceptions any 3-subgroup of such group can be generated by at most four elements.
Consider a normal projective variety $X$, a linear algebraic subgroup $G$ of Aut($X$), and the field $K$ of $G$-invariant rational functions on $X$. We show that the subgroup of Aut($X$) that fixes $K$ pointwise is linear algebraic. If $K$ has transcendence degree $1$ over $k$, then Aut($X$) is an algebraic group.
Let $\Bbbk$ be a perfect field with algebraic closure $\overline{\Bbbk}$. If $H$ is a subgroup of plane automorphisms over $\Bbbk$ and $p\in\overline{\Bbbk}^2$ is a point, we describe the subgroup consisting of plane automorphisms which stabilize the orbit of $p$ under $H$, when this orbit has irreducible closure in $\overline{\Bbbk}^2$. As an application, we treat the case where $H$ is cyclic and the closure of the orbit of $p$ is an arbitrary (non-necessarily irreducible) curve.
Let $G$ be a simple algebraic group of adjoint type over the field $\mathbb{C}$ of complex numbers, $B$ be a Borel subgroup of $G$ containing a maximal torus $T$ of $G.$ In this article, we show that $α$ is a co-minuscule root if and only if for any parabolic subgroup $Q$ containing $B$ properly, there is no Schubert variety $X_{Q}(w)$ in $G/Q$ such that the minimal parabolic subgroup $P_α$ of $G$ is the connected component, containing the identity automorphism of the group of all algebraic automorphisms of $X_{Q}(w).$
Let $G$ be a simple simply-laced algebraic group of adjoint type over the field $\mathbb{C}$ of complex numbers, $B$ be a Borel subgroup of $G$ containing a maximal torus $T$ of $G.$ In this article, we show that $ω_α$ is a minuscule fundamental weight if and only if for any parabolic subgroup $Q$ containing $B$ properly, there is no Schubert variety $X_{Q}(w)$ in $G/Q$ such that the minimal parabolic subgroup $P_α$ of $G$ is the connected component, containing the identity automorphism of the group of all algebraic automorphisms of $X_{Q}(w).$
We study the normal subgroup <f> generated by a non trivial element f in the group G of complex plane polynomial automorphisms having Jacobian determinant 1. On one hand if f has length at most 8 relatively to the classical amalgamated product structure of G, we prove that <f> = G. On the other hand if f is a sufficiently generic element of even length at least 14, we prove that <f> is a proper subgroup of G.
For a geometrically rational surface X over an arbitrary field of characteristic different from 2 and 3 that contains all roots of 1, we show that either X is birational to a product of a projective line and a conic, or the group of birational automorphisms of X has bounded finite subgroups. As a key step in the proof, we show boundedness of finite subgroups in any anisotropic reductive algebraic group over a perfect field that contains all roots of 1. Also, we provide applications to Jordan property for groups of birational automorphisms.
It follows from an observation of A. Coble in 1919 that the automorphism group of an unnodal Enriques surface contains the $2$-congruence subgroup of the Weyl group of the $E_{10}$-lattice. In this article, we determine how much bigger the automorphism group of an unnodal Enriques surface can be. Furthermore, we show that the automorphism group is in fact equal to the $2$-congruence subgroup for generic Enriques surfaces in arbitrary characteristic (under the additional assumption that the Enriques surface is ordinary if the characteristic is $2$), improving the corresponding result of W. Bart…
Let $G$ be a subgroup of the three dimensional projective group $\mathrm{PGL}(3,q)$ defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ of order $q$, viewed as a subgroup of $\mathrm{PGL}(3,K)$ where $K$ is an algebraic closure of $\mathbb{F}_q$. For the seven nonsporadic, maximal subgroups $G$ of $\mathrm{PGL}(3,q)$, we investigate the (projective, irreducible) plane curves defined over $K$ that are left invariant by $G$. For each, we compute the minimum degree $d(G)$ of $G$-invariant curves, provide a classification of all $G$-invariant curves of degree $d(G)$, and determine the first gap $\varepsilo…
Let $G$ be a simple algebraic group of adjoint type over the field $\mathbb{C}$ of complex numbers, $B$ be a Borel subgroup of $G$ containing a maximal torus $T$ of $G.$ Let $w$ be an element of the Weyl group $W$ and $X(w)$ be the Schubert variety in $G/B$ corresponding to $w$. In this article we show that given any parabolic subgroup $P$ of $G$ containing $B$ properly, there is an element $w\in W$ such that $P$ is the connected component, containing the identity element of the group of all algebraic automorphisms of $X(w).$
We classify compact complex surfaces whose groups of bimeromorphic selfmaps have bounded finite subgroups. We also prove that the stabilizer of a point in the automorphism group of a compact complex surface of zero Kodaira dimension, as well as the stabilizer of a point in the automorphism group of an arbitrary compact Kaehler manifold of non-negative Kodaira dimension, always has bounded finite subgroups.
An automorphism $F$ of the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field of characteristic zero is said to be {\it co-tame} if the subgroup of the automorphism group of the polynomial ring generated by $F$ and affine automorphisms contains the tame subgroup. There exist many examples of such an $F$, and several sufficient conditions for co-tameness are already known. In 2015, Edo-Lewis gave the first example of a non-cotame automorphism, which is a tame automorphism of the polynomial ring in three variables. In this paper, we give the first example of a non-cotame automorphism which is not tam…
