Elements generating a proper normal subgroup of the Cremona group

Consider an algebraically closed field k and the Cremona group of all birational transformations of the projective plane over k. We characterize infinite order elements of this group having a non-zero power generating a proper normal subgroup of the Cremona group.

Normal subgroups of the algebraic fundamental group of affine curves in positive characteristic

Let $π_1(C)$ be the algebraic fundamental group of a smooth connected affine curve, defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$ of countable cardinality. Let $N$ be a normal (resp. characteristic) subgroup of $π_1(C)$. Under the hypothesis that the quotient $π_1(C)/N$ admits an infinitely generated Sylow $p$-subgroup, we prove that $N$ is indeed isomorphic to a normal (resp. characteristic) subgroup of a free profinite group of countable cardinality. As a consequence, every proper open subgroup of $N$ is a free profinite group of countable cardinality.

Normal subgroup generated by a plane polynomial automorphism

We study the normal subgroup <f> generated by a non trivial element f in the group G of complex plane polynomial automorphisms having Jacobian determinant 1. On one hand if f has length at most 8 relatively to the classical amalgamated product structure of G, we prove that <f> = G. On the other hand if f is a sufficiently generic element of even length at least 14, we prove that <f> is a proper subgroup of G.

Normal subgroups of fundamental groups of affine curves in positive characteristic II

Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$ and let $C/k$ be a smooth connected affine curve. Denote by $π_1(C)$ its algebraic fundamental group. The goal of this paper is to characterize a certain subset of closed normal subgroups $N$ of $π_1(C)$. In "Normal subgroups of fundamental groups of affine curves in positive characteristic" we proved the same result under the additional hypothesis that $k$ had countable cardinality.

Normal subgroups in the Cremona group (long version)

Let k be an algebraically closed field. We show that the Cremona group of all birational transformations of the projective plane P^2 over k is not a simple group. The strategy makes use of hyperbolic geometry, geometric group theory, and algebraic geometry to produce elements in the Cremona group that generate non trivial normal subgroups.

On finitely generated normal subgroups of Kähler groups

We prove that if a surface group embeds as a normal subgroup in a Kähler group and the conjugation action of the Kähler group on the surface group preserves the conjugacy class of a non-trivial element, then the Kähler group is virtually given by a direct product, where one factor is a surface group. Moreover we prove that if a one-ended hyperbolic group with infinite outer automorphism group embeds as a normal subgroup in a Kähler group then it is virtually a surface group. Normal subgroups generated by a single polynomial automorphism

We study criteria for deciding when the normal subgroup generated by a single polynomial automorphism of $\mathbb{A}^n$ is as large as possible, namely equal to the normal closure of the special linear group in the special automorphism group.
