We characterize universally generalizing morphisms which satisfy descent of algebraic cycles integrally as those universally generalizing morphisms which are surjective with generically reduced fibres. In doing so, we introduce a naive pull-back of cycles for arbitrary morphisms between noetherian schemes, which generalizes the classical pull-back for flat morphisms, and then prove basic properties of this naive pull-back.
We prove the exactness of a descent sequence relating the algebraic cobordism groups of a scheme and its envelopes. Analogous sequences for Chow groups and K-theory were previously proved by Gillet.
In this note we apply Guillen-Navarro descent theorem, \cite{GN02}, to define a descent variant of the algebraic $K$-theory of varieties over a field of characteristic zero, $\mathcal{KD}(X)$, which coincides with $\mathcal{K}(X)$ for smooth varieties. After a result of Haesemeyer, this new theory is equivalent to the homotopy algebraic $K$-theory introduced by Weibel. We also prove that there is a natural weight filtration on the groups $KH_\ast(X)$.
We prove that algebraic K-theory satisfies `pro-descent' for abstract blow-up squares of noetherian schemes. As an application we derive Weibel's conjecture on the vanishing of negative K-groups.
This note was prepared after the workshop on cdh descent and algebraic $K$-theory in Hara-mura, Japan (1 - 5 Sept. 2016), to complement the author's talk on the history and applications of pro cdh descent. In the final section pro cdh descent is used to define $K$-groups of rigid analytic varieties. This note was revised and released in light of Kerz, Strunk, and Tamme establishing pro cdh descent in general (arXiv:1611.08466).
We construct an infinitesimal invariant for cycles in a family with cohomology class in the total space lying in a given level of the Leray filtration. This infinitesimal invariant detects cycles modulo algebraic equivalence in the fibers. We apply this construction to the Ikeda family, which gives optimal results for the Beauville decomposition of the 1-cycle of a very general plane curve in its Jacobian.
For families of smooth complex projective varieties we show that normal functions arising from algebraically trivial cycle classes are algebraic, and defined over the field of definition of the family. In particular, the zero loci of those functions are algebraic and defined over such a field of definition. This proves a conjecture of Charles.
It is shown that to every Q-linear cycle \barαmodulo numerical equivalence on an abelian variety A there is canonically associated a Q-linear cycle αmodulo rational equivalence on A lying above \barα. The assignment \barα-> αrespects the algebraic operations and pullback and push forward along homomorphisms of abelian varieties.
Following an idea of Totaro, we prove that the classical integral cycle class map from algebraic cycles to étale cohomology factors through a quotient of $\ell$-adic étale cobordism over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic. This shows that there is a strong topological obstruction for cohomology classes to be algebraic and that examples of Atiyah, Hirzebruch and Totaro also work in positive characteristic.
We study a formal deformation problem for rational algebraic cycle classes motivated by Grothendieck's variational Hodge conjecture. We argue that there is a close connection between the existence of a Chow-Künneth decomposition and the existence of expected deformations of cycles. This observation applies in particular to abelian schemes.
In this note we are going to consider a smooth projective surface equipped with an involution and study the action of the involution at the level of Chow group of zero cycles.
We construct a semi-orthogonal decomposition on the category of perfect complexes on the blow-up of a derived Artin stack in a quasi-smooth centre. This gives a generalization of Thomason's blow-up formula in algebraic K-theory to derived stacks. We also provide a new criterion for descent in Voevodsky's cdh topology, which we use to give a direct proof of Cisinski's theorem that Weibel's homotopy invariant K-theory satisfies cdh descent.
For every even number $n$, and every $n$-dimensional smooth hypersurface of $\mathbb{P}^{n+1}$ of degree $d$, we compute the periods of all its $\frac{n}{2}$-dimensional complete intersection algebraic cycles. Furthermore, we determine the image of the given algebraic cycle under the cycle class map inside the De Rham cohomology group of the corresponding hypersurface in terms of its Griffiths basis and the polarization. As an application, we use this information to address variational Hodge conjecture for a non complete intersection algebraic cycle. We prove that the locus of general hypersur…
Voevodsky has conjectured that numerical equivalence and smash-equivalence coincide for algebraic cycles on any smooth projective variety. Building on work of Vial and Kahn-Sebastian, we give some new examples of varieties where Voevodsky's conjecture is verified.
Motivated by the local flavor of several well-known semi-orthogonal decompositions in algebraic geometry, we introduce a technique called conservative descent, which shows that it is enough to establish these decompositions locally. The decompositions we have in mind are those for projectivized vector bundles and blow-ups, due to Orlov, and root stacks, due to Ishii and Ueda. Our technique simplifies the proofs of these decompositions and establishes them in greater generality for arbitrary algebraic stacks.
Using fundamental results of Deligne, we prove a nilpotence theorem for algebraic cycles and use this to prove a torsion nilpotence result for correspondences on surfaces.
We study families of faces for convex semi-algebraic sets via the normal cycle which is a semi-algebraic set similar to the conormal variety in projective duality theory. We propose a convex algebraic notion of a "patch" -- a term recently coined by Ciripoi, Kaihnsa, Löhne, and Sturmfels as a tool for approximating the convex hull of a semi-algebraic set. We discuss geometric consequences, both for the semi-algebraic and convex geometry of the families of faces, as well as variations of our definition and their consequences.
We give a theorem of Leray-Hirsch type for Chow groups and use it to study the Hogde and Grothendieck's standard conjectures for algebraic fiber bundles of Leray-Hirsch type. Morevoer, the Hodge conjecture for product varieties will also be considered.
This article proposes a generalization of tautological rings introduced by Beauville and Moonen for Jacobians. The main result is that, under certain hypotheses, the special subvarieties of Prym varieties are algebraically equivalent and their classes belong to the tautological ring.
We study the p-adic deformation properties of algebraic cycle classes modulo rational equivalence. We show that the crystalline Chern character of a vector bundle lies in a certain part of the Hodge filtration if and only if, rationally, the class of the vector bundle lifts to a formal pro-class in K-theory on the p-adic scheme.
This note is about an old conjecture of Voisin, which concerns zero--cycles on the self-product of surfaces of geometric genus one. We prove this conjecture for surfaces with $p_g=1$ and $q=2$.
We present relations between cycles with rational coefficients modulo algebraic equivalence on the Jacobian of a curve. These relations depend on the linear systems the curve admits. They are obtained in the tautological ring, the smallest subspace containing (an embedding of) the curve and closed under the basic operations of intersection, Pontryagin product and the pullback and pushdown induced by homotheties.
This second part of the paper strengthens the descent theory described in the first part to rational maps, arbitrary base fields, and dynamics given by correspondences. We obtain in particular a decomposition of any difference field extension into a tower of finite, field-internal and one-based difference field extensions. This is needed in order to obtain the "dynamical Northcott" Theorem 1.11 of Part I in sharp form.
We present a collection of algebraic equivalences between tautological cycles on the Jacobian $J$ of a curve, i.e., cycles in the subring of the Chow ring of $J$ generated by the classes of certain standard subvarieties of $J$. These equivalences are universal in the sense that they hold for all curves of given genus. We show also that they are compatible with the action of the Fourier transform on tautological cycles and compute this action explicitly.
The goal of this paper is to introduce Hodge 1-motives of algebraic varieties and to state a corresponding cohomological Grothendieck-Hodge conjecture, generalizing the classical Hodge conjecture to arbitrarily singular proper schemes.
We show that algebraic equivalence of images of stable maps of curves lifts to deformation equivalence of the stable maps. The main applications concern $A_1(X)$, the group of 1-cycles modulo algebraic equivalence, for smooth, separably rationally connected varieties. If $K/k$ is an algebraic extension, then the kernel of $A_1(X_k)\to A_1(X_K)$ is at most ${\mathbb Z}/2{\mathbb Z}$. If $k$ is finite, then the image equals the subgroup of Galois invariant cycles. This paper replaces Sections~2--3 of 2211.15915.v.1 and Sections~2--3 of 2211.15911.v.1. The other Sections are retained in the revis…
Let ${\mathcal L}/{\mathcal K}$ be a finite Galois extension and let $X$ be an affine algebraic variety defined over ${\mathcal L}$. Weil's Galois descent theorem provides necessary and sufficient conditions for $X$ to be definable over ${\mathcal K}$, that is, for the existence of an algebraic variety $Y$ defined over ${\mathcal K}$ together with a birational isomorphism $R:X \to Y$ defined over ${\mathcal L}$. Weil's proof does not provide a method to construct the birational isomorphism $R.$ The aim of this paper is to give an explicit construction of $R$.
This note is about cycle-theoretic properties of the Fano variety of lines on a smooth cubic fivefold. The arguments are based on the fact that this Fano variety has finite-dimensional motive. We also present some results concerning Chow groups of Fano varieties of lines on certain cubics in other dimensions.
We study some conjectures about Chow groups of varieties of geometric genus one. Some examples are given of Calabi-Yau threefolds where these conjectures can be verified, using the theory of finite-dimensional motives.
We study links between algebraic cycles on threefolds and finite-dimensionality of their motives with coefficients in Q. We decompose the motive of a non-singular projective threefold X with representable algebraic part of CH_0(X) into Lefschetz motives and the Picard motive of a certain abelian variety, isogenous to the corresponding intermediate Jacobian J^2(X) when the ground field is C. In particular, it implies motivic finite-dimensionality of Fano threefolds over a field. We also prove representability of zero-cycles on several classes of threefolds fibered by surfaces with algebraic H^2…
This note is about the Chow ring of Verra fourfolds. For a general Verra fourfold, we show that the Chow group of homologically trivial $1$-cycles is generated by conics. We also show that Verra fourfolds admit a multiplicative Chow-Künneth decomposition, and draw some consequences for the intersection product in the Chow ring of Verra fourfolds.
This paper is for the proceedings of the Chen-Chow Conference held in Tianjin, China in October 2000. The goal of the paper is to produce and survey evidence for a connection between Chen's work on iterated integrals on the one hand, and algebraic cycles and motives on the other. The paper is expository, and begins with an introduction to Chen's work. Topics covered include loop space de Rham theorems; iterated integrals of currents; the works of Carlson-Clemmens-Morgan and Bruno Harris on periods of mixed Hodge structures on homotopy groups and algebraic cycles; the cobar construction, algebr…
We draw a connection between the model-theoretic notions of modularity (or one-basedness), orthogonality and internality, as applied to difference fields, and questions of descent in in algebraic dynamics. In particular we prove in any dimension a strong dynamical version of Northcott's theorem for function fields, answering a question of Szpiro and Tucker and generalizing a theorem of Baker's for the projective line. The paper comes in three parts. This first part contains an exposition some of the main results of the model theory of difference fields, and their immediate connection to questi…
In this paper, we prove that the statement: ``The (Generalized) Hodge Conjecture holds for codimension-two cycles on a smooth projective variety $X$" is a birationally invariant statement, that is, if the statement is true for $X$, it is also true for all smooth varieties $X'$ which are birationally equivalent to $X$. We also prove the analogous result for 1-cycles. As direct corollaries, the Hodge Conjecture holds for smooth rational projective manifolds with dimension less than or equal to five, and, the Generalized Hodge Conjecture holds for smooth rational projective manifolds with dimensi…
Algebraic $K$-theory is a homology theory that behaves very well on sufficiently nice objects such as stable $C^*$-algebras or smooth algebraic varieties, and very badly in singular situations. This survey explains how to exploit this to detect singularity phenomena using $K$-theory and cyclic homology.
We focus on Voisin's conjecture on 0-cycles on the self-product of surfaces of geometric genus one, which arises in the context of the Bloch-Beilinson filtration conjecture. We verify this conjecture for the family of Todorov surfaces of type $(2,12)$, giving an explicit description of this family as quotient surfaces of the complete intersection of four quadrics in $\mathbb{P}^{6}$. We give some motivic applications.
We show that Gushel-Mukai fivefolds admit a multiplicative Chow-Künneth decomposition, in the sense of Shen-Vial. As a consequence, a certain tautological subring of the Chow ring of powers of these varieties injects into cohomology.
Informed by the Bloch-Beilinson conjectures, Voisin has made a conjecture about $0$-cycles on self-products of Calabi-Yau varieties. In this note, we consider variant versions of Voisin's conjecture for cubic fourfolds, and for hyperkähler varieties. We present examples for which these conjectures are verified, by considering certain very special cubic fourfolds and their Fano varieties of lines.
We consider surfaces of geometric genus $3$ with the property that their transcendental cohomology splits into $3$ pieces, each piece coming from a $K3$ surface. For certain families of surfaces with this property, we can show there is a similar splitting on the level of Chow groups (and Chow motives).
In this text we prove that if a smooth cubic in $\PR^5$ has its Fano variety of lines birational to the Hilbert scheme of two points on a K3 surface, then there exists a smooth projective curve or a smooth projective surface embedded in the Fano variety, such that the kernel of the push-forward (at the level of zero cycles ) induced by the closed embedding is torsion.
Making use of the recent theory of noncommutative motives, we prove that every additive invariant satisfies Galois descent. Examples include mixed complexes, Hochschild homology, cyclic homology, periodic cyclic homology, negative cyclic homology, connective algebraic K-theory, mod-l algebraic K-theory, nonconnective algebraic K-theory, homotopy K-theory, topological Hochschild homology, and topological cyclic homology.
Let X be a smooth projective variety. Starting with a finite set of cycles on powers X^m of X, we consider the Q-vector subspaces of the Q-linear Chow groups of the X^m obtained by iterating the algebraic operations and pullback and push forward along those morphisms X^l -> X^m for which each component X^l -> X is a projection. It is shown that these Q-vector subspaces are all finite-dimensional, provided that the Q-linear Chow motive of X is a direct summand of that of an abelian variety.
Motivated by the Bloch-Beilinson conjectures, Voisin has formulated a conjecture about 0-cycles on self-products of surfaces of geometric genus one. We verify Voisin's conjecture for the family of Todorov surfaces with $K^2=2$ and fundamental group $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$. As a by-product, we prove that certain Todorov surfaces have finite-dimensional motive.
We compare various groups of 0-cycles on quasi-projective varieties over a field. As applications, we show that for certain singular projective varieties, the Levine-Weibel Chow group of 0-cycles coincides with the corresponding Friedlander-Voevodsky motivic cohomology. We also show that over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic, the Chow group of 0-cycles with modulus on a smooth projective variety with respect to a reduced divisor coincides with the Suslin homology of the complement of the divisor. We prove several generalizations of the finiteness theorem of Saito and Sa…
Thomason's étale descent theorem for Bott periodic algebraic $K$-theory \cite{aktec} is generalized to any $MGL$ module over a regular Noetherian scheme of finite dimension. Over arbitrary Noetherian schemes of finite dimension, this generalizes the analog of Thomason's theorem for Weibel's homotopy $K$-theory. This is achieved by amplifying the effects from the case of motivic cohomology, using the slice spectral sequence in the case of the universal example of algebraic cobordism. We also obtain integral versions of these statements: Bousfield localization at étale motivic cohomology is the …
Let $X$ be a projective algebraic manifold and let $CH^r(X)$ be the Chow group of algebraic cycles of codimension $r$ on $X$, modulo rational equivalence. Working with a candidate Bloch-Beilinson filtration $\{F^ν\}_{ν\geq 0}$ on $CH^r(X)\otimes {\Bbb Q}$ due to the second author, we construct a space of arithmetic Hodge theoretic invariants $\nabla J^{r,ν}(X)$ and corresponding map $ϕ_{X}^{r,ν} : Gr_{F}^νCH^r(X)\otimes {\Bbb Q} \to \nabla J^{r,ν}(X)$, and determine conditions on $X$ for which the kernel and image of $ϕ_{X}^{r,ν}$ are ``uncountably large''.
